california patrol members uniformed and nonuniformed have been suffering a severe loss today. >> the chp is mourning the loss of two officers after the squad car smashed into a guardrail while racing to a crash scene near fresno. both have bay area connections. good afternoon, everybody, i'm larry beil. >> the accident happened around 6:00 this morning just before sierra avenue in kings park. the officers heading to check out a crash reported on northbound 99 but turns out that crash was in

the southbound lanes where officers were traveling. we're live from fresno with the story. laura? >> i'm standing right next to highway 99. investigators are still piecing this together and tell us these officers were responding to an accident first reported on the northbound lanes and traveling on southbound lanes at a high rate of speed to turn around and go back another way. it turned out the accident was here on the southbound side, but the time they realized it, it was too late. >> california patrol members uniform and nonuniform have been suffering a severe loss today. >> reporter: fresno area patrol lost two of its own, killed while responding to a 911 call

on highway 99. they drove right into. >> the officers took he vase waive action to avoid striking parties, lost control, struck the guardrail and crashed. >> the officers are 34-year-old brian law and juan gonzales. chp confirms gonzales was at the wheel when it hit the guardrail. no one else was hurt in the crash gonzales leaves behind a girlfriend and family in tulare. law, married with three small >> chp officer brian law leaves behind a wife and three children. he grew up in clovis and started in oakland just a year ago. law has many friends and colleagues say he was into fitness and helping mentor younger officers.

drive. today, the victim's family made a plea for witnesses to come forward. >> everybody is hiding. if you didn't do anything, why do you have to hide? she's innocent and didn't have anything to do with this. they took my sister away. the family says she was not involved in gangs but she started to hang out with the wrong crowd, they don't understand why anyone wanted to harm her >> today a march to protest a shooting of 13-year-old andy lopez in october. joins us live now with the story. wayne? >> reporter: the march is still going on. moments ago they were behind me. and have moved on

again. last fall, sheriff deputy eric gelhaus shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez when he mistook a pellet gun for the real thing the death continues to anger the community. hence, the march we saw to the santa rosa police department. a little more than 100 people met downtown for a rally, they took to the streets and say this is not just about andy lopez but 56 police-related shootings since year 2000. in every case, the district attorney ruled them justifiable this, group wants the d.a.to charge gel rs -- geghaus about the shooting. she says she's being objective in this case. >> we believe she feels it's more important to look and

and nationwide. today a salute to barack obama. a san francisco program launching last week has a lot of people getting on board this, is a new way for bicyclists to try to detour thieves. >> you know we hear about cell phone thefts but bicycle thefts are a bigger problem, now, the city and bicycling enthusists are helping a program will help. four people are riding bikes in san francisco. 75,000 per day. that meant a rise in rippoffs 4,000 stolen in 2012. according to a city report, that is a 70% increase from 2006. >> i've had two bicycles stolen
