making news in america this morning, winter whiteout. another storm streaking across the country complete with thunder snow and highway pileups. rough ride. severe turbulence sends passengers and crew to the hospital. we are hearing from the people who experienced the terrifying flight. path of destruction. an out-of-control bus packed with people slams into streetlights and a building. dramatic video from inside the bus. sugar free. a puppy ends up three feet underground. his rescue playing out in front of an entire neighborhood and tv cameras.

good morning. i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> and i'm john muller. we begin with the winter blast version nine. >> eight major storms since the holidays, and the next one in line is already slamming the midwest. the latest radar image showing a wall of snow stretching from canada to the carolina coast. abc's tahman bradley starts our coverage from washington. >> reporter: overnight another winter storm unleashed its fury across the midwest, howling winds, ice and snow. some areas got 1 to 3 inches per hour. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think we should have spring already coming around. i hate this weather. >> reporter: whiteout conditions in parts of iowa and wisconsin. 15 semis and 40 cars were involved in this wreck on i-94 in michigan. in illinois, thundersnow. in chicago, there's so much snow on the ground, the snowbanks are now taller than cars.

>> i'm getting tired of it because it's been going on forever. >> reporter: across new england, crews are racing to get salt to towns desperately in need. >> we probably added about 200,000 or 300,000 tons into our normal shipment. >> the price is on and you have to get the ships out. >> reporter: some cities have brought in bulldozers and trucks to remove heaps of snow that the plows can't get, and all this is creating another problem for homeowners, ice dams. >> the neighbors from the gutter and we're trying to get the ice up. >> reporter: heat from inside homes melts snow and it pools in gutters and refreezes solid. >> and then it actually seeps underneath the shingles into the tar paper and into people's homes. >> reporter: it can ruin walls, ceilings and electrical wiring causes tens of thousands in damage. the storm moves into the northeast this morning where philly, new york and boston could see several inches of snow. the winter weather advisories run from wisconsin to maine. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> all right, so where exactly

is this latest storm and where is it headed? >> accuweather's jim dickey is tracking the system minute by minute and joins us now. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and marci. yet another round of snow expected here for the snow weary northeast and new england. quit-hitting system out of the great lakes moving eastward through the morning hours. watch out especially along i-80 here. roadways will be dangerous in some locations near whiteout conditions and the question, now, as this thing moves to the coast it's going to strengthen as has been the case for many storms. the past couple of storms. three to six inches expected to spread out in the lakes again all the way into new england as we head on through the night. john and marci, back to you. >> jim, thank you. our extreme weather team will continue tracking this storm. live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." and we're learning new details about a scare and some injuries after a united airlines plane hit severe turbulence. the packed 737 dropped without warning and then began to bounce around yesterday. it left denver bound for

billings, montana, and one passenger said he saw a baby fly out of his parents' arms and land in a seat nearby. this man describes what it was like. >> it started shaking and then it dropped. i don't know how far it dropped, but a lot of people, they were screaming and having issues and, you know, there was a lot of people that were scared. >> other passengers described papers going everywhere, even seeing someone leave a footprint on the ceiling, it was so violent. several passengers and flight attendants were taken to the hospital. one is still in the icu. well, an indiana family was among those terrified passengers on board ethiopian airlines flight 707 when the plane was hijacked to geneva yesterday. jolene and darren shrock and their 5-year-old daughter clair were on that flight headed from ethiopia's capital to rome. they had no idea it was being hijacked but knew something was wrong. >> we were just about like an hour and a half into our flight

and it felt like there was like some commotion up front, and all of a sudden the plane dropped quickly in altitude. >> the co-pilot had hijacked the plane. the pilot was locked out of the cockpit when he left to use the restroom. the co-pilot then took control. he asked for asylum in switzerland. it is likely he will get prison instead. north korea is denying scathing allegations by the united nations against its young dictator. a u.n. panel looking into crimes against humanity by kim jong-un's regime is reporting some of the worst abuses the world has ever seen. the north is accused of terrorizing citizens and killing those who resist the government. in the infamous prison camps, allegations of rampant torture, rape, forced abortion and execution. violent clashes in thailand this morning between protesters and riot police. at least one person was killed and dozens injured as officers in bangkok tried to disperse the

crowd calling for the outster of the prime minister. demonstrators have been occupying parts of the city and blocking access to government offices. they cemented the gates of the building where the prime minister works to keep her from returning. firefighters in the los angeles area battled a two-alarm fire for about 20 minutes before they brought that under control. flames shooting high in the air as that fire quickly spread from one building to another. nobody hurt. now to the olympics. busy day in sochi because of yesterday's event cancellations due to the fog. >> already this morning american snowboarder alex diebold on the right in the green vest won a bronze in the snowboard cross event. that followed some historic performances by americans on monday. abc's kirit radia has the details. >> reporter: what a night for figure skating pair meryl davis and charlie white. they became the first americans to win the ice dancing gold medal thanks to a spectacular and nearly flawless performance. the pair from the suburbs of detroit have been skating

together for 17 years since they were in the fourth grade. their friends, training partners and rivals with the silver medalists from canada. >> it's incredible. i can't imagine being up here with anyone else. >> we felt like we had that opportunity to be the complete team and go out there and be able to go out there and just prove to the world that, you know, beyond a doubt that we were the best. >> reporter: thick fog in the mountains above sochi canceled some events on monday, but it didn't affect the two-man bobsled. for the first time in 62 years the u.s. won a medal in the event. steven holcomb and steve langton held their positions in the last two runs and won the bronze. today 18-year-old mikaela shiffrin is among the women's to compete in the women's giant slalom and julia mancuso who has a bronze in sochi failed to finish her first run in the event. lolo jones makes her winter olympic debut riding in the third american two-woman bobsled, and there will be some daredevil stunts

stock markets re-open today in positive territory as we learn that wall street's historic gains last year raised americans' retirement accounts to record highs. fidelity investments says the average balance in its accounts is now over $89,000. that is nearly double the amount during the recession. however, only about half of working americans have a retirement account. well, just about everyone is affected by the rising cost of gasoline. the extremely cold winter combined with more expensive crude has pushed average gas prices to more than $3 per gallon in all 50 states, and analysts expect a price spike in the coming weeks as refineries dial back production to switch to summer fuels. and we have a consumer alert for anyone who may have hot pockets in the freezer. grocers are pulling the philly steak and cheese variety from store shelves as a result of a meat recall.

that meat wasn't adequately inspected. it's just a precaution. no illnesses have been reported. all right, "house of cards" season two was an instant hit. netflix released all 13 episodes on friday and one cable operator reports that 16% of subscribers have seen at least one episode in the first ten hours. when season one came out just 2% watched an episode the entire first weekend. chipotle makes some of the most popular mexican food in america, and now it is making tv. "farmed and dangerous" is a four-part comedy series streaming on hulu about factory farming to raise awareness about the food we eat. it's a radical new direction in marketing. okay, when we come back, history is made with the first professional female football player. plus, upside down in the snow. how did a plane end up like this? and frantic rescue. a three-hour operation all to save a four-legged friend. to release steady energy all morning long. belvita. ♪ morning win now, for a look at the morning road conditions, the east coast, of course, getting socked with more ice and snow. rain-slicked roads in the south from texas to the carolina coast. torrential and in western washington and oregon and 2 to 3 feet of snow in the cascades and northern rockies will make roads impassable. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in d.c., new york, philly and boston. back to the news now, and new jailhouse recordings from the man convicted in that florida shooting which started as an argument over loud music. >> prosecutors released phone calls between michael dunn and his fiancee who later testified against him. it was a side of dunn that jurors never saw. >> i'm the [ bleep ] victim hire. i was the one who was victimized like they attacked me. i'm the victim. i'm the victor, but i was the victim too. >> in hours of calls with his

fiancee and his parents, dunn repeatedly claims that the state had no case against him, but the jury found otherwise and now dunn will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. well, the pilot of a small plane is earning praise this morning after he brought the failing aircraft down on a winter ice of lake huron. the six passengers on board were not hurt. the plane was not damaged during that landing. police, fire crews and good samaritans on snowmobiles rushed to the aircraft and helped bring everyone safely to shore. a small plane in new jersey did not have such a smooth landing. the cessna apparently ran off the runway and got stuck in a snowbank and flipped over. the pilot was able to walk away. a dashboard camera captured dramatic video of a bus in boise, idaho, running off the road and crashing. nine passengers were on board as it mowed down trees and light poles, plowed through two parking lots and then slammed into a building. the driver suffered minor injuries. police charged him with driving drowsy. saying other cameras on the bus

caught him with his eyes closed. planet earth dodged another galactic bullet. a huge asteroid, you see the bright dot right there, came within 2 million miles which is a close call by space standards. the asteroid was as big as three football fields, and it was traveling 27,000 miles an hour. all right. well, a massive rescue effort for a tiny family pet in south florida. >> a 2-month-old puppy got trapped underground after falling down a sewage pipe just six inches wide. rescuers could hear sugarman, the pomeranian, barking, but they had to excavate the yard and then send down a camera to find him. >> after four hours, they pulled sugarman out safely. he was shivering, soaking wet but otherwise okay. lucky little fellow. >> uh-huh. all right, now to sports not taking place in sochi, anyway. the nba getting back to business tonight after the all-star break. >> and that has left it all to the college guys now. we get the hoops highlights from

our guys at espn. >> so you fell asleep on the couch again, did you? well, this is the sports report. >> we got some college basketball to tell you about. roy williams and north carolina taking on florida state, 299 wins for north carolina's head coach. nate britt reversing it. 53 apiece. halfway through the second half north carolina down by 3. britt passes to j.p. tokoto. carolina up by five. under three minutes left in regulation. marcus paige double-teamed finds bryce johnson, bobbled by britt but tokoto will finish. tokoto, 10 points. meeks with three. >> oklahoma state and baylor. brown in ok state. there they go. 3.5 seconds in the game already. baylor up 3. uh-oh. bang. leyton hammonds tied the game. seemed like he missed like 14 in a row until that.

there will be more traffic this morning. we will talk about what is happening over the altamont pass. the traffic is flowing. it is smooth. 4:29. it is early. 63 miles per hour from tracy. the speeds jump up close to vasco road. drive time traffic westbound along 580 westbound from tracy to castro valley, 32 minutes, 101 northbound from highway 85 to the san jose airport is 11 minutes and through san francisco under ten minutes. back to the shot from emeryville you can see flashing lights in the distance with a couple of lanes blocked off for construction until 5:00. there is a crash at the toll plaza. >> from the east bay, alameda sheriff deputies have sealed off a home following a shooting involving one of their own. amy hollyfield is near the scene. amy? >> officers confirm they shot

and killed a man in san lorenzo. he was armed and attacked the officers. they did not say what he was armed with. it was not a gun. the public information officer is working to confirm what the weapon was. he will get that to us when it is confirmed. the sheriff was called to the unable at 11:00 last night. the house needed the fire department and paramedics. a spokesman said it is a long story. he will explain to us why they were called. in the meantime, the neighborhood is proposed off. it look like investigators will be here for a while. this is a big crime scene with the technician van arriving. they are settling in for a long investigation. we expecting a briefing very soon. we will get it to you as soon as
