good morning, america. breaking now, yet another snowy, messy commute from philadelphia to boston. the storm battering chicago with thunder snow. more massive pileups on midwest interstates. ginger zee is standing by with a new headline, the big thaw on the way. and new overnight, severe turbulence on a united airlines 737 causes chaos in the cabin over montana. a flight attendant hitting and cracking the ceiling of the plane. multiple injuries. the aircraft forced to make an emergency landing. i'm the victor, but i was the victim, too. >> stunning jailhouse tapes just released of the man convicted of attempted murder in that loud music shooting. the shocking calls by michael dunn to his fiancee from behind bars. davis and white lit up the ice!

with the caption, i should be asleep right now, but instead, i'm like whaaa? perfect image for how he was feeling. >> so great and derek hough really rooting them on. he played a large part in choreographing their routine and we will talk to him today about those moves. >> mm-hmm. >> what doesn't he do? how does he find the time? and more medals this morning for team usa. 27-year-old alex deibold just took home his first olympic medal. it's a bronze in snowboard cross. the u.s. right now looking down from the top of the table. but it's a big day. >> so a lot to get to from sochi. now, though, that snowstorm blasting the northeast right now. let's take a look in new york city. look, just shrouded in snow this morning. it's going to be another brutal commute for some big cities here in the northeast. ginger tracking it all. good morning, ginger, out there in times square. >> oh, i'm right here and i have that same feeling, that whaaa, that the olympian had. i have to show you video from not just here but east of philadelphia where some of the snow was coming down really heavy at times. we've seen anywhere from 1 to 3

inches. and i want to show you the radar right now. this is how you'll get an idea of when it's going to end. in the next couple of hours for a lot of folks. but stretching from western pennsylvania all the way to connecticut this morning. you can expect another 1 to 3 inches on top of what you already had especially in parts of northern new england. doesn't matter, though, even a little bit can create chaos on the roads as we saw overnight. it's another slip-and-slide morning commute across the northeast. [ thunder claps ] and thunder snow. that wild, explosive snow dropping 1 to 2 inches per hour in parts of illinois monday. and in michigan, a huge pileup along snowy i-94. around 40 vehicles colliding. and while this latest storm is mostly misery, the months of harsh cold potentially saving seven people that were on that plane. their engine failing. their emergency landing smooth on the thick ice of lake huron.

>> the one passenger stated it was actually softer than landing on the runway. >> reporter: and a survival story in ohio. this lucky kitten rescued after someone found him outside frozen. first mistaking him for a dark piece of ice. >> thankfully, this guy seemed to have a good spirit. he wanted to live. >> reporter: that kitten aptly named frosty, now on the mend with the local humane society. hoping for the best for frosty. we are all going to become less frosty. let me show you. as the storm pulls away we have that milder air right behind. the timing of it all gone for us by late tonight. but how mild will we get? it's a brief mild air. the february thaw only lasts a couple of days. but look at some of those numbers. indianapolis close to 60 friday, though, they drop down again. you know what that means between the two, we've got severe weather to talk about. all of that coming up in your nation's weather but for now back in to robin. >> all right, ginger. we have a few takers for frosty.

would love to adopt that little one. thanks, ginger. to a rough ride in the sky. a number of passengers and crew members hurt when their flight from denver to billings, montana, ran into severe turbulence just before landing. and abc's david kerley has the story. >> reporter: just as the 737 from denver was starting to descend for a landing in billings, montana, a violent sudden drop. >> felt like something came up from the bottom and hit the bottom of the plane. >> and then stuff and people were flying all over the place. >> reporter: united airlines described it as severe turbulence. >> the man in front of me flew up out of his seat and hit the ceiling. >> reporter: one passenger quoted as saying a flight attendant also hit the ceiling. one of those two people hit so violently the roof lining cracked. the drop so forceful an infant flew from a mother's arms and landed in another seat nearby, unharmed, but scared. with three crew members hurt as well as a number of passengers, the captain declared a medical emergency. >> bleeding pretty badly, and they can't get it to stop, so they're requesting medical attention at the gate.

>> white-knuckle flying. for 20 minutes after. >> reporter: once on the ground among the 114 passengers and 5 crew members, 3 flight attendants and 2 passengers were taken to the hospital. one taken to intensive care. turbulence is not uncommon and often hits without warning hurting crew members the most. every year turbulence injures on average 32 people in aircraft and more than two-thirds of those hurt are crew members. now, of the five people taken to the hospital, four have been treated and released. only that flight attendant is still hospitalized this morning. and it's a tragic reminder when they tell you, whether you're landing or taking off, but during flight, keep your seat belt buckled so you stay in your seat in case there's turbulence like we saw yesterday. george? >> okay, david, thanks. another flight story right now. we are learning much more today about that hijacking of a passenger jet by its co-pilot. at first we were told that the passengers were unaware of the threat. but now they are telling a much different story about their terrifying ordeal. abc's terry moran has the latest from london. >> reporter: it is every

passenger's worst nightmare come true. your co-pilot hijacks your plane from inside the cockpit. and that's what happened to the shrock family of goshen, indiana. on an ethiopian airlines jet. >> there was yelling over the intercom like put your masks on. >> reporter: the plane rocking, hurtling about, plunging. >> we just knew there was a lot of turbulence. we had lost a lot of altitude. >> reporter: the co-pilot threatening to crash the plane as the pilot, who was locked out by the co-pilot after he left to go to the bathroom, battled to get back inside. >> the lock on the door since 9/11, somebody can lock themselves in and you can't get anybody else back in the cockpit. >> reporter: then silence, no answers to their questions about the drama unfolding inside the cockpit. >> it was about three hours. we didn't hear anything after all of the yelling. >> reporter: air traffic controllers were wrestling with what to do. italian and french fighter jets were scrambled. >> fuel remaining is now 20 minutes. >> reporter: finally the police stormed the plane.

>> your attention, please. this is a police operation. >> reporter: the pilot exiting the cockpit down a rope. he was arrested immediately. and he is in a world of trouble looking at a 20-year prison sentence if convicted. now, u.s. airlines have a general rule. if the co-pilot or pilot leave the cockpit to use the facilities, a flight attendant always, always steps in the cockpit. no one is allowed to be alone in the cockpit on u.s. flights. airlines around the world will undoubtedly be looking at these protocols. george? >> makes sense. okay, terry, thanks very much. how does this sound, the americans keep medaling? the americans keep medaling. nice ring to it, doesn't it? yes, shining bright on the ice last night and on the slopes this morning. abc's amy robach tracking it all at our "gma" headquarters right there in our olympics desk in sochi. good morning to you, amy. >> hey, good morning, robin. it is an action-packed day here in sochi and rain soaked. we can hear it pounding on our

roof here. it's pouring in the village and in the mountains. but guess what? no rain could dampen the excitement of a thrilling night on the ice. a magical gold medal performance unlike any other. >> davis and white lit up the ice! >> reporter: figure skating phenoms meryl davis and charlie white unbeatable. lifting and twizzling their way to america's first ever ice dance gold, capturing the highest free dance score ever recorded. >> to be able to go out on the ice and skate how you dream about at night was ridiculous. >> it's incredible. i can't imagine being up here with anyone else. >> reporter: afterwards white summing up their 17 years together in three simple words -- >> i just told meryl that i loved her. it was, you know, just the perfect moment to really express, you know, how grateful i am to have had her by my side. >> reporter: from regal style to adrenaline-pumping speed, team usa's steve holcomb and steve langton powering down the chute

and into the history books. >> he's got it! holcomb medals for the united states! >> reporter: their bronze medal run marking america's first two-man bobsled medal in more than 60 years. >> carpenter scores! >> reporter: in the semifinals of women's hockey team usa crushing the swedes, 6-1. their eyes now fixed on a gold medal clash with rival canada this thursday. >> down to a one-game tournament. that's all we have left. >> reporter: up in the mountains, races postponed by the thick fog monday. >> we are not racing because you can't see anything. >> reporter: finally getting under way this morning, american alex deibold crushing the competition in men's snowboard cross hours ago into the bronze medal spot. and just missing the podium, 18-year-old colorado native mikaela shiffrin who had three incredible runs, but landed in fifth place with only half a second between her and gold. now let's get to the latest news flying down the track this morning. lolo jones, the olympic track

and field star, now giving the winter games a go. her selection to the bobsled team caused a bit of an uproar, some suggesting she was included more for her looks than talent. jones says this olympics is all about underdogs citing shaun white and shani davis, big names who didn't medal. so if the underdogs end up on the podium, jones could find here's with something new to wear around her neck. and a great chance for gold when halfpipe skier david weiss hits the slopes today. he is the reigning world champion in this event and put all the other competitors on notice. he says he has a new trick he's been saving just for the finals. the u.s. team is deep in ski halfpipe. hopefully we will be able to add to our medal counts. robin, can't wait to see what that new move is. >> we're right there with you, amy, as always. thank you. speaking of the medal count -- >> yes. >> take a stroll. >> come with me. >> i wish.

>> to the sochi scoreboard. so much action in sochi this morning. take a look at the top. the u.s. now even with the host nation russia. at the top of your medal board. each with 19 total medals and fi5 golds apiece. the americans pulling even thanks to alex deibold. rounding out the top five, norway, with 18 total. a thrilling finnish the biathlon. just nosing out a french skier at the very end. netherlands and canada, bringing up the rear. 17 and 16 respectively. don't sleep on the germans with eight gold medals overall. >> looking good there, team usa. thank you, josh. >> thank you, josh. and that camera caught sasha cohen coming around. olympic silver medalist. our special contributor. hard to imagine a better performance than what we saw

last night. >> meryl and charlie are literally the best dancers that we've ever seen in dance history and to take home a bronze, a gold, and then a silver from a previous olympics, it's icon toik be part -- iconic to be pae team event. and be so consistent for so long, never make a mistake, and to -- they train with tessa and scott and basically flipped medal spots in the last games. >> i was going to ask you about that. what a small world. they train together right outside of detroit. >> these two couples have been together since they were children and they've matured into the sport and become such amazing, amazing role models and amazing athletes through it. when you watch their tapes to what they present now they've made dance more athletic and the twizzles that they do are really unrivaled. >> you tour with them and you have toured with them as well. you think they've got it to come back for another olympics. >> i toured with meryl and charlie on "stars on ice" and we would always discuss that.

and they have ambitions to go to law school and things. and being an olympic athlete consumes your entire life, but, you know, if anyone could do it, they could. sticking four more years to be at the games just required so much of them. and you know, they pulled it off so well. >> it did pay off. back for our "gma" games. thank you very much. today's other top stories from josh. we begin with a new plan to rescue a u.s. soldier held captive by the taliban for more than four years. u.s. officials believe that bowe bergdahl is being held somewhere in pakistan. and now, according to "the washington post," the obama administration is considering a new kind of prisoner swap. simultaneously releasing five taliban prisoners from guantanamo bay in exchange for bergdahl's release. they hope to negotiate his release before u.s. forces withdraw from afghanistan. and a very lucky escape for a woman in oregon. take a look at this. a tree came crashing through her house during a fierce wind storm, while she was asleep in

her bed. that is where the tree came through the roof of the house into her bedroom. she survived the near-miss, though, somehow got free and drove herself to the hospital. thankfully, she's okay this morning. and some new and very concerning news this morning for parents whose children play football. a new study finds that helmets may not be as effective at preventing concussions as you might have thought. researchers tested ten of the most widely used helmets and found on average they reduced the risk of brain injury only by some 20% compared to wearing no helmet at all. and one researcher actually admitted that all ten of the helmets tested were, and i do quote, terrible, end quote. meanwhile, dashboard camera captured this. video of a bus veering off the road in boise, idaho. as you can see, plowing through trees, light poles, crashing through not one but two parking lots before slamming into a

building. the driver of the bus suffered only minor injuries but police say he had been dozing off at the time the bus left the road. a shocking scene at a new art museum in miami. a local artist there picked up as you can see an ancient chinese vase worth $1 million and then threw it to the ground, shattered it. he says he was protesting the museum's decision to show only international art. he stands now charged with criminal mischief. and there's a reason they call pope francis the people's pope. insisting -- insisting on getting fingerprinted and paying the $50 fee to renew his passport in his native argentina, still using his stul name, jorge mario bergoglio. and just like everyone else, he'll have to wait a few days for the bureaucracy to get that through the system. >> just like us. >> it seems like almost every week there's something else that

and i shot him. >> reporter: the jury heard from him for four hours but even they heard nothing like this. >> i'm the [ bleep ] victim here. i was the one who was victimized. it's like they attacked me. i'm the victim. i'm the victor, but i was the victim, too. >> reporter: the state's attorney's office just released jailhouse calls between the software developer and his fiance, who later testified against him. >> what did the defendant say? >> oh, i hate that thug music. >> reporter: dunn also suggests the young men he shot at must be criminals. >> it's when the police said that these guys didn't have a record, i was like, yeah, i wonder if they were just flying under the radar. >> right. >> because they were bad. >> reporter: some of the calls are quite intimate. >> i miss you terribly. >> yeah? >> yeah. >> i knew what i had, but you don't know what you got till it's gone. >> reporter: in hours of calls

to his fiance and to his parents, dunn repeatedly claims the state has no case against him. >> i'm just, you know, superconfident that if they take this to trial, it's going to be a short deliberation. >> reporter: that's not how it worked out. jurors deliberated for more than 30 hours before finding dunn guilty of three counts of attempted second-degree murder for firing into an suv full of teens at this jacksonville gas station. [ gunfire ] >> oh, my god, somebody is shooting. >> reporter: the jury deadlocked on whether dunn murdered 17-year-old jordan davis or if he shot him in self-defense. even with a mistrial on the murder count, dunn will spend the next 60 years in prison. on the tapes he talks a lot about life behind bars. >> so i was in a room with three black guys. >> oh, no. >> well, they're -- two were kids and one was an old man and they asked what i was in for and i told them. and i gave them some of the

details, and they were like, yep, straight up, that's what they get. >> reporter: the jury didn't agree. and now michael dunn will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, jacksonville, florida. >> our thanks to ryan. now the story that josh was telling us about. an incredible survival story. members of two families whose suv got stuck in a snowbank on a remote mountain road. trekking almost 20 miles through treacherous conditions to find help. abc's alex perez has more. >> reporter: it's the hug two shaken families feared they'd never again share. will murkle, his daughter megun and john julian and his kids, samantha and isaac, survived the unthinkable. >> it was freezing. >> reporter: a bone-chilling night in the idaho mountains, stranded after a field trip went terribly wrong. >> the car just slid kind of off the road into the side of the mountain. >> reporter: their suv stuck in

the snow. no gas, no supplies, and no cell phone service. the group sang songs and told stories to distract themselves fearing what they might encounter. >> the scariest thing was when we came across fresh wolf tracks. >> reporter: after a long, cold night, sunday sunrise. they walked 19 miles. the dads encouraging their hungry kids along the way. >> well, we told them that they would get a cheeseburger, hot chocolate, fries and a soda. >> reporter: they finally found a cabin and phoned their families. >> my big concern not knowing if they were injured. >> reporter: amazingly everyone is okay. these dads promising next time they'll speak up before they leave. >> i think the most important thing is that we'd have made more clear where we were going exactly. >> reporter: even the kids picking up tips they'll share with classmates this morning. >> i'm going to bring extra blankets, sleeping bags, food and more water and pillows.

i'm getting to you any way. because all-time olympic great bode miller, becoming the all-time skiing medalist in history with the bronze medal win over the weekend. he still has two events to go and robin has a terrific interview but first abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: when bode miller flung himself down the hill on the super-g on sunday he didn't ski like the u.s. team's old man winter. more like a daredevil teenager. the 36-year-old nearly crashing but holding on to tie for the bronze. with an olympic career spanning 16 years, he would become the oldest alpine skier to medal in the olympics. he wasn't thinking about that. >> you know, my brother passing away, i really wanted to come back here and race, you know, the way he sends it. >> reporter: on the soft snow came the hard memories of his brother known as chilly, an olympic hopeful in snowboarding who died suddenly last april of a seizure.

whole season because of an injury. how have you been able to come back as you have, bode? >> there was a real question mark i think for myself and everyone else especially coaches and staff and that surgery that i had, the micro fracture is really pretty fickle. especially at my age and with the abuse i've had on my body and knees, so coming back out of that and i did have -- i had a good amount of time which makes a huge difference, i didn't have to rush things a little bit and i think that really made a huge difference for me to come into the olympics ready. it was really kind of a focused goal for about two years and that, you know, that allowed me to be patient and take things slow enough to avoid the real risk of injury. >> right. and you have two more events to go. two more to go. how are you preparing and how are the conditions? >> i don't know if you can see right now, it's not very good. it's pouring rain. we were up skiing this morning and it was -- it was pouring rain on the bottom. and then freezing rain in the middle. and then snowing really hard at

the top with just the bottom lip. so, you know, we have a tough sport. outdoor sports are a little different and, you know, it's really about how you adjust to those conditions and that's one of the things i was pretty prepared for coming in here is i felt like i was ready to use my experience to make those adjustments and, you know, tomorrow will be a real test. >> yeah, it's odd to see all those umbrellas behind you right now instead of seeing snow falling. to see the rain falling like that. hey, bode, you know there's been a lot of focus on the emotion that you have shown going through what you have this past year. how comfortable are you with the focus being on how emotional you have been, some of the focus? >> i've kind of been used to having things picked apart and, you know, i feel -- i feel really lucky that people got the right -- you know, got the right idea that i wasn't sad about my medal, i was just overwhelmed with emotion about everything. and those moments kind of -- they sneak up on you sometimes. i really -- i don't think it was kristen cooper's fault and don't

about that severe turbulence on a united airlines flight, the flight from denver preparing to land in billings, montana, when it shook violently, and the plane, in fact, dropped with such force, a passenger flew out of the seat and hit the ceiling cracking the plastic above him. an infant was also tossed out of a woman's arms and into another seat. all the passengers including that infant are okay, but one flight attendant remains in the hospital this morning. and a terrifying finish to this flight here in the uk. look this. the pilot trying to land in fierce crosswinds. the landing gear of that boeing 767 hit the tarmac so violently, the whole plane bounced before finally, in fact, coming to a stop. and near chicago, a crash on the tracks delayed the evening commute for thousands of people. the driver of the car you see, well, you saw there was stuck in the snow. it got stuck right in the middle of a railroad crossing.
