making news in america this morning -- winter's comeback. from shorts and t-shirts to another arctic blast. more bitter cold is on the way after a small taste of spring. not before a major thaw causes some big problems. >> kingpin captured. we go inside the hunt for the world's most wanted drug lord. his transformed image. and what led investigators to his hideout. midair mishap. a flurry of feathers through the plane's windshield. >> a few seconds later, all of a sudden, the windshield just exploded. stuff was flying everywhere. >> this morning, the pilot is talking about his airborne emergency. and full circle. a stuntman's wild trick. the amazing speed he had to run to make this happen.

good monday morning, i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. >> and i'm john muller. we begin with another polar blast poised to hammer much of the country not once, but twice this week. by friday, temperatures will be 30 degrees below where they were this weekend. take a look at boston. temperatures in the 50s. runners hit the streets wearing shorts. but by sunrise, they'll be waking up shivering, with highs only in the 30s. the weather did little to help dozens of ice fishermen stranded for three days in upper red lake in minnesota. high winds blew the snow four to seven feet high against the ice houses where they were staying. >> we had drifts from 4 to 7 1/2 feet tall. our house was almost underneath a drift. the wind was blowing so bad. >> reporter: in pennsylvania, the sunshine barely made a dent in the huge ice boulders near pittsburgh that jammed up the once they do finally break up,

there is concern now about the possibility of widespread flooding hitting the area. in florida, heavy rain shut down the daytona 500 after 38 laps. fans were told to evacuate the grandstands, huddling indoors, tweeting photos. the drivers had to sit around for 6 hours and 22 minutes until they were automobile to resume, finishing up under the lights. one more note about the weather. in the coming week, two pacific storms could drop as much as 2 inches of rain on california and several feet of snow in the mountains. it's a welcome forecast after the state's driest year, but still not enough to end the drought. our other big story this morning, the arrest of a cartel leader said to be responsible for 25% of the drugs coming into the united states. >> this morning, u.s. prosecutors are working to get joaquin "el chapo" guzman tried in the united states. these pictures show why he remained so elusive for 13 years. his image today looking so much

different after report ed plastc surgeries. kristin fisher has the details of his arrest. >> reporter: the search for mexico's most wanted fugitive may be over. but the fight over which country will get justice first is only beginning. >> he's sometimes called the osama bin laden of drug trafficking. mostly because of the impact he's had in the united states. >> reporter: el chapo, as he's called, is the kingpin of a cartel responsible for 25% of all drugs entering the u.s. and 80% of the drugs in chicago. federal prosecutors there and in california, new york, and texas all want him tried in their jurisdiction. the question now, whether or not mexican officials will be willing to release him. >> i would ask that the mexicans consider extraditing him to the united states where he will be put in a supermax prison under tight security where he cannot escape. >> reporter: he's being held in this maximum security prison in mexico. but 13 years ago, he escaped from a mexican prison in a laundry basket. just last week, he eluded capture by sneaking out of his hideout through this underground tunnel. >> people are not feeling safe.

and people -- just because of this, they're not going to sleep better. they're not going to sleep better just because el chapo guzman was arrested. >> reporter: mexican authorities released this video of the hotel room where el chapo was caught on saturday morning. a kingpin caught. many experts think business will continue as usual. >> the organizations just don't crumble. they still work. >> reporter: the extradition of such a high-profile suspect before he was tried in mexico would be unusual. but many u.s. officials believe this case is the exception. kristin fisher, abc news, washington. now to the power struggle in the ukraine. a top opponent of the president has been given the reins of power for the time being. and a warrant is out for the old president's arrest. >> in his absence, the citizens are getting a look inside the opulent presidential estate where they found a private zoo, fancy cars, a personal golf course, and a gold-plated toilet. the president still has his supporters, as abc's alex marquardt explains.

>> reporter: ukraine is a country more divided than ever. risking being torn apart. the capital and western part of the country eager to follow the u.s. and europe. here in the eastern part, they're mostly pro-russia, pro-putin. >> we're very angry about what happened in kiev. we want our government. >> reporter: demonstrators in the east clashed. out here, the battle may be just beginning. alex marquardt, abc news. karkiev, in eastern ukraine. there is political unrest in venezuela. a country where inflation is sky-high and shelves are often bare. a retired venezuelan general has become the rallying cry. for those who oppose the president. the general sported a flak jacket and a rifle as he addressed dozens of neighbors from the balcony of his home. it looks like the u.s. army is about to get much smarter. defense secretary chuck hagel is reportedly planning to shrink the army to pre-world war ii levels.

despite the cuts, "the new york times" says the proposal coming out today promises that the military will remain the most capable in the world. it would no longer be able to maintain prolonged foreign occupations. boat traffic stacked up this morning after a 65-mile stretch of the mississippi river was closed over the weekend. it happened after an oil barge hit a tow boat. they don't know how much oil was spilled. some sports history from the nba. last night, jason collins became the first openly gay player to play in any of the four major u.s. sports. >> he signed a ten-day contract with the brooklyn nets yesterday and a few hours later, he was on the floor facing the l.a. lakers. after the game, collins said getting back on the floor was fun. >> i'm usually, like, the background, one of the background players. it's weird, obviously, this, but at the same time, it is what it is. and, it's part of life.

welcome back. apple is issuing a software update for the iphone, ipad, and ipod touch. that comes after it was revealed that ios 7 operating system has a serious security flaw. the update keeps people from viewing encrypted data on apple mobile devices. it is intended for those with the iphone 4 or later, the ipod touch, or the ipad 2 or later. netflix and comcast have announced a new deal. that they say is already giving customers better service. the companies have established a more direct connection so movies and tv shows can be streamed more smoothly. they say that connection will also allow for future growth in

netflix traffic. mozilla is showing off a prototype for a new smartphone that will cost just 25 bucks. it won't be as powerful as more expensive models, but it will provide internet access and will be able to run apps. it will be marketed mostly to the developing world. facebook's new acquisition whatsapp is back up and running this morning after an embarrassing crash over the weekend. the free messaging service was down on saturday for about three hours. that was due to server problems. not a great kickoff after spending $19 billion on whatsapp. facebook insists the problem has been solved. "the lego movie" still stacking up high against the competition. the top draw at the box office for the third straight week raking in $31 million. the kevin costner movie "three days to kill" trailed with $12 million. the gladiator flick, "pompei" opened at number three. very good news for ice cream lovers. ben and jerry's are set to

the plane and he did. stark reminders about the dangers of carbon monoxide. the manager of a legal seafoods in new york died after he passed out in the restaurant basement. more than two dozen people were overcome by the fumes. investigators believe a faulty water heater was to blame. a carbon monoxide leak affected people at a hotel in maine. the levels were ten times higher than normal levels. the hotel was evacuated and shut down pending further investigation and repairs. neither the hotel nor the new york restaurant had carbon monoxide detectors. a new study is raising safety concerns about a common artificial dye. a bright yellow coloring band back in the '70s. researchers at rutgers university say the chemical pcb-11 is leaking potentially harmful toxins. it's found in yellow dyes found

in paint, clothing, and toys. there's not enough science to show the effects on human. they say it may lead to cancer and birth defects. a scary incident for a utah highway patrol officer. he was in the emergency lane yesterday morning when his cruiser was sideswiped by a semi. he pulled the driver over. the driver had started to run. the cop had a different cruiser totalled a couple of weeks ago. cue the dynamite. there goes another big section of what's left of the old metrodome in minneapolis. demolition work was halted last week when part of the demolition came doubt out of sequence. they decided to bring in more explosives and destroy part of the upper concourse all in one shot. it seems to have worked. the nfl is closer to instituting a new rule that would penalize teams if players use a certain word on the field.

derailment on friday. amy? >> the tracks are still damaged. they are repaired. trains will be running. you should not feel a thing. look at pictures of what happened. this was friday. four cars derailed on friday night around 6:30. the train was empty. there were no passengers. it happened between pleasant hill and concord. crews moved the train off the tracks on saturday and sunday. they are lying to figure out why this happened. >> there is nothing we have seen so far that would lead us to believe acralment would occur. it will take investigation. we will investigate two, three, possibly four weeks for an answer. >> trains ran yesterday at 8:00 in the morning. one
