degrees below average when we're talking lows or highs, it still adds on to this epic and savage winter. look at the number. it sticks around for this week, too. the next four mornings, you're waking up early at 4 below in minneapolis. boston in the teens. so we'll have much more in the nation's weather, including fog in houston that could hurt your travel this morning. george? >> winter not over yet. the latest on this weekend's takedown of the world's most wanted man. the mexican drug kingpin and billionaire known as el chapo was arrested without a fight early saturday. and now the u.s. wants him extradited to face charges here. abc's chief justice corespondent pierre thomas is tracking every detail. he joins us now from washington. good morning, pierre. >> good morning, george. today, a real-life villain more like a character in an action movie is in mexico under maximum security. the mexicans have el chapo. the united states government wants him, too. there's no doubt that the u.s. will seek to extradite el chapo because he's caused so much

devastation across this country. he's the leader of a cartel responsible for 25% of all drugs flowing into the u.s. cocaine, heroin, marijuana, the country's top supplier. 80% of the drugs in chicago come from his cartel. there he's public enemy number one. >> he's sometimes called the osama bin laden of drug trafficking. >> reporter: sources tell us that el chapo is responsible for more deaths in the u.s. than bin laden himself. he faces indictment in chicago, san diego, brooklyn and texas. it all ended here in room 401 as el chapo was surrounded by mexican paramilitary. this grainy video shows how they captured him in a messy hotel room without firing a single shot. he was snatched. broken door, breakfast still on the stove. an indication of an abrupt departure. reports of a woman in the room with him, possibly a girlfriend or his wife, a legendary beauty queen. and with that, a legendary villain who escaped prison 13 years earlier in a laundry basket was back in custody.

he narrowly escaped a week earlier in a town 130 miles away from the hotel where he was captured. he slipped out of a bathroom trap door, down these stairs into the underground tunnels. as mexican authorities tried to break down a steel door. fitting for the houdini mastermind drug dealer who had been a step ahead of police for more than a decade. >> el chapo is one of the most creative and business-minded drug traffickers the world has ever seen. catapults, tunnels, airplanes, i mean, you name it he thought of it, and he tried it. >> reporter: there's a long line of u.s. prosecutors who want el chapo. the question is whether mexican officials will release a man tied to 80,000 murders in their country. robin? >> many are waiting to see. thank you. now to the fast-moving events in the ukraine just across the border from the olympics. the manhunt for the ousted president. an arrest warrant was just issued for the man supported by russian president putin. the ukrainian president now on

the run. his vast luxury retreat handed back to the people. the wealth inside, well, staggering. hamish macdonald is there at the presidential compound. >> reporter: welcome to ukraine's hottest new tourist attraction. the gates open in a few hours. there's already a few hundred people waiting here. this place only opened two days ago. already, there's a bike rental. here, security camera footage captured the moment that president yanukovych fled the capital. his empire crumbled. so guards decided to let us in early before the crowds. let's go. it's never that simple when you're in the middle of a revolution. >> i suppose that's what happens when you don't know who is in control. right? president yanukovych was known to be rich. but the wealth on display here is blowing people's minds. inside, gold-plated toilets. outside, the president's own archeological site. it even has roman ruins.

unbelievable. a zoo with pigs and peacocks and this pretty ostrich. these guys were the president's pets. a vintage car collection worth millions, including this 1963 chevy impala. on the water, a replica sailing ship sits waiting. i wasn't sure this could get any more bizarre, but it has. we're now in a cart. this retreat is vast. it's said to have cost some $500 million to build. that seems a lot to the average person here. they earn less than $15 a day. now, with the ex-president effectively a fugitive, the leaders of the revolution want to sell off the estate, auction off everything inside it and give the proceeds to the families of victims killed in the bloodshed over the last few weeks. george? >> that is some sight. hamish, thanks very much. lets get more now from martha raddatz.

u.s. officials actively engaged on all of this right now. the main goal is to keep ukraine together and keep russia out? >> exactly right, george. the u.s. has made it clear that it would be a big mistake for russia to send in troops. if the protests start up again in a significant way, or if the country seems to be out of control or yanukovych tries to stir up trouble in supporters, it's not out of the question that russia would try to take some kind of action no matter what the u.s. says. and meanwhile, a big announcement coming from the pentagon. chuck hagel about to announce his new budget. it projects the smallest united states army since world war ii. >> he will submit a recommendation as part of a budget preview today that would shrink the army to about 450,000 soldiers from a high of about 570,000. there were already scheduled cuts. this goes further than the scheduled cuts. it also is reported to stop the

use of an ailing attack jet. this is the reality of the post 9/11 era. the pentagon does not see feature wars involving massive invading armies. the focus will be on special operations and drones. nevertheless, george, you can expect a big fight on capitol hill. >> no question about that. p thank you very much. let's get the other top stories from josh. we begin in northern minnesota. dozens of ice fishermen have been stranded for three days on a lake after a massive snow drift there trapped them in their ice houses. the snow piled up to seven feet high in some places, buried as many as 100 people in their shelters until the weather finally cleared the way for rescuers to reach them thankfully everyone involved is now home safe. a medical mystery in california. doctors there are reporting more than a dozen cases of a polio- like sickness that can paralyze a child's arms or legs. one mother said her 4-year-old daughter went to reach for a toy and suddenly couldn't move her arm.

doctors have ruled out polio since the affected children have been vaccinated. they say the illness may be linked to a virus there. and crews working now around the clock to clean up an oil spill that's closed a 65-mile stretch of the mississippi river near new orleans. a barge sprang a leak after striking a tug boat. officials are not sure how much oil has spilled. and you might want to get ready to pay more to fill up the car. gas prices have increased some 12 cents a gallon in just the last two weeks, thanks in part to volatility in the global oil market. a major deal that could change the rules of the internet. netflix has agreed to pay comcast for faster streaming of movies and tv shows. this deal reportedly worth millions of dollars comes just as comcast tries to buy its rival, time warner cable. and a sports landmark is no more. 84 charges of dynamite brought

down the venerable outer ring of the minneapolis metrodome. work has halted recently after a beam collapsed there. adios to you. and finally olympic athletes heading home from sochi this morning. after a closing ceremony where performers poked fun at the rather epic fail in the opening ceremony. that fifth olympic ring that wasn't. it paused before it finally sprung open. there was, however, no epic fail for the home country. as we mentioned, they took the overall medal count, 33. the u.s. finishing with 28. russia took the only number that matters to some, the gold medal count. they led the way with 13 as well. but again, as we said, congratulations to the country for putting on a good and safe olympic games. congratulations to the american athletes who made us proud. what a fortnight it was. >> yes. [ applause ] >> yes, all the athletes.

>> you got that right, josh. thanks. now to a mass carbon monoxide poisoning at a restaurant on new york's long island. one person killed. dozens getting sick. this morning we're learning the restaurant wasn't required to have carbon monoxide detectors. mara schiavocampo. has the story. >> reporter: overnight, officials confirming what caused a deadly leak at a new york restaurant saturday evening. >> defective heating equipment in the building. specifically a flue pipe on one of the water heaters failed. >> reporter: it all started with reports that a woman has fainted at the legal sea foods restaurant in an upscale mall on long island. when first responders arrived, they started feeling sick, too. they evacuated that restaurant and two others. >> they were trying to get everybody out as fast as they could. >> reporter: 27 employees and first responders were hospitalized. 55-year-old manager steve nelson, a father of two, was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> he sort of epitomized sort of the family spirit that we have. >> reporter: it's a tragedy all

too common in winter months. >> fire, going to the falls. report of a carbon monoxide alarm. >> reporter: a day later, a similar scare on sunday at this main hotel. seven people showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning were evacuated and sent to the hospital. while carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless poison, it's effects are quickly felt. including headaches, nausea and dizziness. >> the treatment for people who suspect or know that they have carbon monoxide poisoning are to get themselves out of that environment. get into fresh, open air. >> reporter: despites incidents like the two this weekend, only 25 states require carbon monoxide detectors in certain residential buildings. and most states, including new york, do not require them in restaurants or malls. now as mentioned, this legal sea foods was not required to have a monitor. it didn't have one. the restaurant's owner says detectors will be placed in all

of their restaurants. now speaking of those detectors, experts say it's key they be placed outside bedrooms. it's very important they're able to provide a vital warning to anyone sleeping. robin? >> thank you so much. >> we'll switch gears now to a history-making moment in the nba. jason collins broke through a big barrier last night when he suited up for the brooklyn nets against the lakers becoming the first openly gay player in any of the four major pro leagues. abc's john muller has the story. >> reporter: he played for just ten minutes. there's no doubt jason colin's performance will go down no history. >> an historic moment at staples center as jason collins becomes the first openly gay athlete. >> reporter: the 35-year-old center hitting the floor sunday night as the first openly gay player in any of the nation's four major professional sports leagues. signing a ten-day contract with the brooklyn nets just hours before the game. >> i don't have time to think

>> never happier to see the lakers lose than last night. congratulations to you. >> wow, that's saying a lot. >> yes, we'll turn to some other drama last night. the daytona 500, delayed for hours and hours by rain. when all the drivers got back on the track late in the eve, it was dale earnhardt jr. who emerged victorious. taking the checkers for a second time at daytona. a very emotional win. daytona's longest day ended in victory for dale earnhardt jr. it was the end of a two-year, 55-race losing streak for nascar's most beloved driver. as he crossed the finish line, he told his crew, this is better than the first one. what did it feel like yesterday to win your second? >> you know, it's -- winning the daytona 500 is the greatest feeling you can have as a nascar

driver. >> reporter: earnhardt's second daytona win, the last one coming a decade ago, capped the longest day in daytona race history. thanks to a rain delay that lasted nearly 6 1/2 hours. a tornado warning sent fans fleeing from the stands. drivers waited for the restart. playing basketball, tweeting with fans, going out for pizza. on the air, rain delay caused confusion for viewers. >> throughout the whole six-hour delay, i was totally comfortable. just waiting it out. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of people across the country thought they were watching nascar great jimmie johnson win the 500. friends and family texted johnson with messages of congratulations. the problem? he was nowhere near victory lane at the time. turns out fox was airing a replay of last year's race, which johnson did win. johnson's rep tells us he was waiting for the race to resume

sudden disappearance op heather elvis. reena ninan has the details. >> reporter: this morning, a south carolina couple believed to be linked to the mysterious disappearance of student heather elvis has been charged with kidnaps. >> i believe they were involved. if they didn't do something to her, they know who did. >> reporter: her father checked her cell phone records. one number appeared multiple times, belonging to sidney mo moorer. >> according to coworkers, she had a relationship with this gentleman. i didn't foe anything about it. >> reporter: heather vanished. police believe she trove there willingly, but have no idea why. >> her car was parked where it shouldn't be. she was nowhere to be found. it was locked. no one was answering her phone. >> reporter: moorer and his wife were charged on sunday.

police haven't said why. >> they're parents. they have children. i think it would do them good to think about how we feel. >> reporter: the attorney said sidney has no connection to or knowledge of facts surrounding the disappearance of heather elvis. >> to the best of my knowledge, tammy does not know heather elvis at all. i don't think they have ever met. >> reporter: the new kidnapping charge is a small victory for the elvis family. they say it's not enough. >> if heather's safe, if she's unharm, i don't care what they do with them. they can turn them loose. >> reporter: for "good morning america," reena ninan, abc news, new york. >> boy, we hope they find out where she is. >> we do. now to the miracle rescue many of us have been talking about. the woman giving cpr on the highway to her infant nephew.

we're going to talk to her, see the baby, meet the mama. first, here's their story. these are the photos that have the internet buzzing. the hero aunt, pamela ra urk seo, trying desperately to save her unconscious nephew's wife. she was stuck in traffic when she noticed 5-month-old sebastian, born premature with respiratory issues, had stopped breathing and was turning blue. she began cpr as fellow drivers raced in to help. one of them al diaz, "the miami herald" paragrapher. sflit was pretty traumatic. >> reporter: the cpr worked at first. but then the baby stopped breathing again. rauseo started cpr again. joining us now, the hero auntie,

pamela rauseo, baby sebastian and his mother. mom, how is your baby boy doing this morning? chlt he's doing good. he was sleeping before we left. >> that's a good sign. we're grateful that you're a nurse in that very hospital where your son is. have doctors been able to determine what's going on here? >> no, not yet. today, we'll start some testing that they want to perform on him. so hopefully, today, we'll have some answers. >> all right, pamela, take us back. what happened? and how did you know something wasn't right? >> we were in the car. i was driving, and when he stopped crying, i just -- i really had a strong feeling that something was off. and that's when i went back to check up on him and i saw him sleeping. but he looked peal. when i touched him, he was limp. his body, his hands.

i was so nervous. my fingers coulden dial 911. so i got out of the car, i started screaming for help, asking someone, anyone to see if they can do cpr on him. i got on my knees and i started performing cpr. luckily, after a while, he responded. >> the reason so many people know about this story, of course, the pictures. when you both saw those pictures, pam larks what was your reaction when you sea them? >> once i got to see those images, it -- it showed me how terrifying it really seemed. it is one thing to tell someone. it's another thing to actually see it. >> and for you, paola, when you saw the pictures? >> it was very scary. i get very emotional just thinking about it because -- he was purple. you know, and me knowing, like, what that means is harder. it's very hard on me.

>> oh, hon, we -- it's totally understandable. we're grateful he's doing well. i know that your sister, you have a special relationship. she's always had a special relationship with your son. talk about that. it's inspired her in some way. >> when i first found out i was pregnant, the first person i called was her. she was so excited that her kids were going have another cousin. and she started designing his room because that's what she does, and she just wanted every detail to be so perfect. and special for him. >> and, speaking of babies, uh, is there something you want to share with us? >> yes, i recently found out before i rourn ereturned back t

helping everyday people and lebts with their problems. this morning, dr. drew is facing issues closer to home. as his 21-year-old daughter, paulina pinsky opens up with what she says is her seven-year battle. speaking out for the first time while hosting the school's body positivity week. she says the disorder started as she was training as an ice skater in her teens. she said she felt pressure from others, including her mother. she needed me to be perfect. i was the pretty blonde girl who was a cheerleader and an ice skater. when paulina told he she had been throwing up since the seventh grade, she says her mother responded, well, get your teeth chaeked.

>> many parents don't realize how much weight their words have on their daughter's body image. when the parent scowls at something hay see, they reinforce the message that girls must be thin to be valuable. >> this is what you have to work on. it's not black and white. >> reporter: she says she needed help about two years ago. writing i had hit rock bottom. purging eight times in one day had finally scared me enough to take action. she says her disclosure to her mother brought them closer. she said she finally understands. it wasn't just i who had been affected by society's demands for my body. it was my mother, and her mother before her. in a statement late last night, trchlt drew said we're so proud of paulina and her outreach to help others and empower women. it sounds like the ice skating

in it. >> reporter: pcbs were banned 35 years ago. pcb-11 is an unintentional by-product of pigment manufacturing. it's not regulated if the concentrations are not too high. in the study, all yellow clothing tested had pcb-11. almost all paper with it had it, too. >> it's from the class of compounds caused pcbs. we know they're toxic. >> reporter: pcb-11 is among the large number of pcbs being evaluated. in the meantime, what do you do to avoid those products? the researcher washes the clothes a few times in hot water before they wear it for the first time. >> yellow pigment is the worst offender.

there are pcbs in other pigments as well. >> reporter: when it comes to yellow, don't let the colorful brightness fool you. >> goodness. this has raised a lot of eyebrows. chief health and medical expert, dr. richard besser weighs in. what is going on? >> this is -- this is a scary situation. because we don't know whether there's risk here. other researchers have looked at other colors. it's not just a situation with yellow. they're finding it in many different colors of dye. >> we know this has nothing to do with food dye. >> it doesn't. these are not allowed in foods. these dyes are getting into our water supply. they get into the food supply because of that route. they're able to detect them in people's bodies because of what they eat. >> how dangerous can can it be for human ifs consumed? >> i think if there were a really big health risk, we would

have detected something. but at the doesn't mean there's not a small risk from long-term exposure. not enough studies about low-dose kem cams in our environment and long-term exposure. i'm not changing anything time doing auz of this. the researcher is. she's washing some of the clothes. that will reduce the exposure. >> it makes sense any way. >> all kinds of fabric softener in there. >> thanks. we're going to turn now to that new trend, hi, in finding, of course, that perfect dress for your walk down the aisle. shopping for a wedding gown as i well know can be stressful. a new service removes some of that anxiety and lets you do it in the comfort of your own home. abc's rachel smith has the story. >> reporter: it's a magical

>> it was even featured on "gma." >> when we first saw the video, we had no idea it was this big. >> five six. >> reporter: now, a second chance for the cavalier band to perfect their performance in the spot light. the great "gma" do-over to the rescue. we teamed up with the brains behind ohio state university's best damn band in the land, including director, john waters, known for plotting elaborate formations with his band mates. he used an ipad app called drillbook next to design a a crowd-pleasing pattern for the cavalier band. all weekend long, the band prepped for the big moment to shine. >> i walked into the stadium tonight and without seeing a step or hearing them play a note, i know they'll do this. >> reporter: and for the tuba players who proudly wear their claim to fame on custom t-shirts --

>> we have what it takes to redeem ourselves. >> reporter: they say they're more than ready to show america. >> everyone is pumped and ready. >> reporter: -- their fighting team spirit. >> all: one, two, three, never look back. >> mulligans are us. we are all fired up for this. before we show them do it right, one more look. a tuba pileup to end all tuba pileups. they brought in the folks that dot the "i." and now, sara haines is there live on the scene at lake travis high school in austin for some tex-mex and some history remade. sara? >> that's right, josh. now the crucial part in this routine happens in the first ten seconds. they're going to attempt to do that backward walking thing that tripped them up last fall, and a new formation they have never done before. i brought in the cheerleaders to help me get them started. ready, guys? >> all: let's do it over! matter how much practice you have. and i remember in my first rehearsal with michael, he was like, how are you doing? and i said, i'm really nervous. he said to me, so am i. and that was so good to hear. >> reporter: when did you first realize that your performance, your character, patsy, really connected with people? >> very early on. there was a couple. an older couple that had just come from the film. the older gentleman, he could barely speak. but all he said was thank you. and he -- reached out for an embrace, and i held him. and he was just -- broken. and that was the first time i realized, wow, this is bigger than all of us. >> reporter: she is enjoying this time in her life. she has an impressive collection of selfies posted on instagram. oh, i made a selfie with lupita. we have some of your selfies
