and in the gulf, stranded by fog, the carnival "triumph" unable to dock, closing the port since yesterday. that was the ship known for losing power for five days in the gulf last year now stuck at sea again until that fog lifts. not fog but dust in denver. an imposing haboob racing across the land engulfing parts of the mile high city after temperatures dropped almost 40 degrees in just two hours. the shift to spring in virginia forcing a dramatic rescue. police using a helicopter to reach a man and two dogs after their canoe flooded on icy waters. and in detroit, roads like rinks. some cars slipping and sliding. others frozen in place that seems like a never-ending winter. >> i had to call aaa to get me out of my spot. >> reporter: in illinois and indiana, the weather threat? ice jams forcing flooding along rivers threatening homes.

and now that mudslide alert out west. we finally have a rainy pattern which is great news. but a lot of it is going to fall and fall very quickly. look at that bull's-eye north of los angeles, 4 to 6 inches could fall in the next four or five days so really important to be watching the next five days in l.a. and, of course, san diego in line for it, too. >> a whole lot more coming. all right, ginger, thanks very much. today's other top stories from josh. >> all right, george. we begin with a new warning. how your family budget will be affected. the average grocery bill could go up by as much as 10% to 15%. the lack of water means that farmers can't plant their fields and that impacts everything from the price of fruits and vegetables, of course, to meat. also money could soon be pouring in from the u.s. to help stabilize ukraine. today ukraine's president delayed plans to form a new government. their ousted president remains on the run accused of mass murder. russia has called the interim leaders illegitimate.

new opposition this morning to an arizona law that allows business owners with strong religious beliefs to refuse service to gays and lesbians. hundreds of protesters marched on the state capitol. now three republican lawmakers who voted for the bill are urging the governor to veto it. and some stunning new video to show you. a deck collapse in indiana that sent, as you can see, two dozen people plummeting to the ground during a family get-together. many suffered serious injuries. family member jeremy wilt says they are now suing the companies that made and maintained that deck. but the birlds say by law, they are not liable because the deck is more than ten years old. and more than two dozen new arrests expected this morning in connection with a massive disability scam tied to the attacks of september 11th in which police and firefighters were allegedly coached to claim injuries they didn't have. defrauding taxpayers of some $400 million.

and a bizarre and failed bank robbery attempt here caught on camera. a man walks up to a teller as you can see here, carrying a meat cleaver. but the teller laughs it off because the material is protected by glass partition that is meat-cleaver-free. seconds later that was the end of that. everybody was okay. speaking of finally three cleveland women, you remember them, survived a decade of captivity at the hands of kidnapper ariel castro being honored for their strength and their spirit. ohio's governor awarded amanda berry and gina dejesus and michelle knight medals of courage. calling them extraordinary victors, not victims. >> they rescued themselves, first by staying strong and by sticking together. [ applause ] >> let 'em clap. the women got a two-minute standing ovation. this, of course, their first public appearance together since

they escaped. and, again, we wish all three the very best as they return to lives. >> talk about resiliency. we continue to think of them. thanks for that, josh. now to those mysterious new cases in california. children exhibiting rare polio-like symptoms. investigators racing to figure out what it is. abc's cecilia vega has the story. >> reporter: this morning a medical mystery is making headlines in california. neurologists are investigating as many as 25 cases of children who show symptoms of a polio-like syndrome. 4-year-old sophia jarvis is one of the five confirmed cases of children living with this illness in california. two years ago her parents took her to the hospital when she started wheezing. doctors thought it was asthma but something wasn't right. >> she went to grab a toy and her hand stopped midway. >> reporter: within days sophia was paralyzed. >> let's hope this doesn't

happen and continue to happen. but if it were that we can figure out what to do. >> so far no cases have we seen great recoveries in any of the kids. >> reporter: the average age of the affected children is 12 years old. their symptoms set on fast within days. some of the kids first showing signs of a common cold. all of them are unable to move some or all of their limbs. and each of them had the polio vaccine. doctors do not know the cause, but they say this may mean a polio-like virus found in asia and australia could now be in the u.s. the cdc is monitoring the situation. while neurologists say paralysis is extremely rare, they want doctors and parents to be on the lookout. >> if you think you have a patient with sudden onset of weakness in one or more limbs, we recommend prompt evaluation with a medical and neurologic specialist.

>> reporter: today like most 4-year-olds sophia likes princesses and twirling. and even though she may never gain full use of her arm she still manages to pick on her big brothers just fine. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> oh, such a sweet little girl. with more on that and the latest on a new study raising concerns about taking acetaminophen during pregnancy, researchers say the popular painkiller in tylenol may increase their child's risk of having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or adhd. we'll bring in our chief medical editor dr. richard besser with more on all this beginning with the children with polio-like symptoms. >> i mean whenever you see something like this, it's very worrisome. and they're going to be looking to see, sit just in california, or are there any of these cases around the country? usually what we'll find it's a common virus that most people have no problem with and for some reason a small group of people react this way. >> how concerned should we be? >> i think they need to jump all over it and figure out what's going on and see whether it's something common or rare. >> this new study, this other study that really raised a lot of eyebrows about women, pregnant women taking over-the-counter drugs like tylenol and adhd.

>> large study done in denmark, more than 60,000 women. they followed them for seven years. over half of the women took tylenol during pregnancy, acetaminophen and 30% were more likely to have a child on adhd medication during those seven years. and so that raised the concern, was that the cause? >> it wasn't a controlled trial so how can you link -- >> they say it wasn't controlled and i think that's valid. they weren't able to see why did they take the drug? maybe it was the illness itself that caused that link. and they didn't look at any other medications that people were taking. >> so what should pregnant women do? >> you know, whenever you're pregnant and you're reaching for a medication you need to ask do i really need this? but fever is dangerous during pregnancy. and the other drugs for fever, aspirin and ibuprofen, are quite dangerous. so this is definitely the safest

drug to take. but check with your doctor. >> thank you. we'll have you back later for something else. the latest on the kerry kennedy trial. the 54-year-old daughter of bobby kennedy is accused of sleep driving under the influence of ambien and her family, including mother ethel, turned out in support of her in the courtroom. linsey davis is tracking it. >> reporter: kerry kennedy is expected back in court to fight her misdemeanor charge. at her side on monday her mother ethel and two of her brothers, bobby and doug. >> we're not going to comment until after things are done. >> reporter: part of the defense's opening argument, the bio of the 54-year-old's famous family with mentions of her father, rfk, and that she is the niece of our former president, john f. kennedy. the judge quickly interrupted, advising kennedy's attorney to stick to the evidence. part of that evidence introduced by the prosecutor was an hour-long police dash cam video from when the officer approached kennedy shortly after she sideswiped a tractor trailer back in july of 2012. a groggy kennedy can be seen failing a field sobriety test and later falling asleep in the back of her suv.

kennedy, who is expected to testify this week, says the morning of the accident she may have mistakenly taken ambien after confusing it with a thyroid pill. she's pleaded not guilty. >> under the law if you're charged with a crime, you have to have intent. if you do something accidentally then you're not punished by the criminal law. >> reporter: witnesses testified after the accident they saw kennedy slumped over her steering wheel. >> we don't have a comment. trial is going well. >> reporter: the kennedys, no strangers to public legal battles, as usual, standing by each other's side. the defense was quick to say kennedy is not seeking any advantages here because of her famous family. and that she also should not be penalized for it. defense attorneys that we've talked to say for the average person, a case like this would have never made it to trial. but once again, kerry kennedy expected to take the stand in her own defense sometime this week. george? >> okay, linsey, thanks. more from our chief legal

affairs anchor dan abrams. we heard linsey say the defense attorney say an average person would never have been brought to trial. >> it's true. even if she's convicted of this misdemeanor, she likely won't face any jail time. these cases don't go to trial. you resolve these cases with a violation. you don't end up bothering with a jury trial on something like this. remember, they agree on most of the facts here. they agree that she seems to have accidentally taken this drug. the legal question is, should she then have gotten off the road? meaning did she have the wherewithal to know i need to get off the road now because i'm a danger. there's no question she was a danger. the question is should she be held legally responsible for that in a misdemeanor trial? >> it seems like the lawyers are trying to hammer home this idea of celebrity justice in the trial. they keep bringing up the kennedy name. >> i think the defense attorneys want the jury to say, what are we doing here? why are we here? the reason we're here is because

the prosecutors don't want to cut a deal, in effect, with someone who is well known and someone who is famous. look, you have to believe that's the case. the prosecutors, the last thing they want is for people in the public to say she's being treated differently. she's getting better treatment because she's kerry kennedy. >> any risk for kerry kennedy in testifying? >> in a case like this, i don't think so, again, because most of the facts aren't in dispute. >> okay, dan abrams, thanks very much. >> okay, george. to the urgent manhunt for a mysterious mass shooter. the search is on for a gunman who shot man in broad daylight at this palatial mansion on long island. gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: this morning, florida's posh oheka castle, home to fairy tale weddings -- >> i melissa, take you -- >> reporter: -- is the scene of a whodunit, sparking an intense manhunt. a gunman wearing a black mask ambushing the castle's owner in broad daylight monday afternoon shooting 69-year-old gary melius in the face as he walked to his

the victim didn't die as a result of the fight alone but also because of a blood-thinning medication he was taking. take a close look at this surveillance video showing two motorists driven to violence in a parking lot in fairfax, virginia. this morning, 58-year-old lee cena is in court facing misdemeanor assault and battery charges after getting into this fistfight with 63-year-old william o'brien last april. all because cena said o'brien honked at him too many times. prosecutors say the fight resulted in o'brien's death. >> i wanted to yell at him, okay, and vent. and he attacked me. >> reporter: the fight lasted less than one minute and both parties walked away, but hours later o'brien called 911 telling the dispatcher, quote, i have a headache that is about to make my head blow off. then ten days later o'brien, a father of two, died from a brain injury made worse by a

blood-thinning medication he had been taking. cena was arrested after o'brien died. >> he was brought back to the station, interviewed and subsequently charged. >> reporter: this recently released video of his interrogation is shedding new light on the confrontation, showing the moment cena, a former sunday school teacher, first learns o'brien has been hospitalized because of the fight. >> from me hitting him? >> yes. >> you're kidding me. >> reporter: cena admits following o'brien into the parking lot but says it was only to confront him verbally. >> i am backing up the whole time. the whole time. he was the one who was aggressive. i only struck him after he hit me. after he hit me. have police look at the tapes. please. you're using them to condemn me. at least look at them to see if i'm telling the truth. >> reporter: prosecutors say it's not the truth and cena threw the first punch. >> jurors are going to need to sort out who was the initial aggressor? was it the deft who went up to the victim and said some things

verbally? or was it the victim, who an eyewitness claims was the physical aggressor coming at the defendant? >> now, he did initially face more serious charges but prosecutors dropped them saying they didn't fit the circumstances. the maximum penalty for those misdemeanor charges is 12 months in jail. he has pleaded not guilty but he has admitted he should not have followed that man in the parking lot. >> a lot of eyes on this case. the next story began as a traffic incident. some dash cam video, police misconduct cleared a new jersey man facing years in prison and turned the tables on the officers who accused him. sara wallace from wabc brings us this exclusive report. >> get out the car! get out! >> reporter: this is the bloomfield police department's dash cam video that prosecutors say they never saw when they pursued criminal charges against 30-year-old marcus jeter. notice his hands in the air. he was charged with eluding police, resisting arrest and

assault. and also notice who throws repeated punches. wabc obtained the dash cam video exclusively. the incident began when cops were called to the bloomfield home jeter shares with his girlfriend. no charges were filed and jeter says he left after briefly talking to officers. >> when they were behind me with the lights on, i pulled right over. i wasn't trying to escape. >> reporter: in a video from the first police car prosecutors did see jeter stops on the side of the garden state parkway. the cops pull out guns. why didn't you just get out of the car? >> because i was -- i was afraid. there was a cop on my left with a gun pointed at me and one on my right side with a shotgun pointed. >> reporter: the tape not initially turned over is on the dash of a second police car that comes from the opposite direction, crosses the median into ongoing traffic and then strikes jeter's car. there is no mention of that in any police report. >> the next thing i know, the glass gets busted. >> get out the car! >> my hands are up. as soon as he opened the door one of the officers reached in

investigation into the founder of bikram yoga. one of the most famous yoga gurus in the world. he's facing multiple civil suits from former students and for the first time his accusers are speaking out in a television interview. abc's david wright has the story. >> reporter: bikram choudhury may well be the most successful yoga guru in the world. his brand of hot yoga has millions of followers. but bikram now faces a serious legal threat, five of his former students suing him for sexual assault. >> nobody has the right to my body. >> reporter: sarah baughn alleges bikram first accosted her when she was attending his teacher training program. >> and he put his hands on my leg and my arm and pulled them apart. he then started whispering things in my ear, don't you love me? he's a sick man.
