pittsburg this morning. >> good morning, we have coverage on the flooding and problems the storm has dropped on the bay area. amy hollyfield is covering the trouble spots in the east bay and our reporter is in the south bay both areas seeing a flood of problems. >> mike nicco has a look at live doppler 7 hd. mike? >> good morning, everyone, a lull right now in san francisco but here is the rainfall totals in last night's storm. we knew it would be hot and heavy and we went from .5" to three-quarters to 1" elsewhere and 2" in this area. the radar returns from novato and napa, they are rotating due north so watch out north of 101 and rohnert park. you will get wet. it is raining in sfo. to my south, as well, you can see a heavy storm off the shore that will move on soon into half

moon bay and pacifica the next 20 minutes and the south bay is getting light-to-moderate rain. here is the concern going forward: the next batch is developing to the south and rotate north with locally heavy storms possibly thunderstorms as long as the low is churning off the coast and that is what it is going to do for the bet we part of the day. that is why we have the flood advisory to the south. there will be heavy surf, also, overnight from 8:00 this evening to 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. i will show you how much rain we will get and a timetable coming up. >> the storm made for a messy commute, from crashes that jammed the freeways to bart delays, no one was going anywhere fast. amy hollyfield is at the walnut creek bart station with that story. bart has two separate problems that caused delays. both were blamed on the weather and the roads remain not much better. >> you did not have any good

options this morning if you commuted in the east bay. the heavy rain caused all keeps of problems on the roads including a fatal accident that blocked westbound highway 24 in oakland at 5:45 this morning. a male driver was taken to a hospital. the female driver in the other car was killed. >> she was not the passenger. she was the driver. >> c.h.p. said they responded to 70 calls for services this morning ranging from flooded roadways to this fatal crash. the bart had problems, too, with rains seeping through the ventilation system into the computer system. train operators had to manually drives trains through the tube which means the trains go much slower. >> limited service law -- through the tube. >> commuters tried to figure out whether getting on was worth the gamble. this woman decided to go home rather than try to get to the

city. >> it is hard to tell. i looked on the web site and i saw all the trains are running normal intervals but it doesn't say...whether it will be 32-minute ride or 52-minute ride or longer than that. i thought i would take my chance and come down here but i will go home. >> the sign it would be tough came early: there was is much rain, so fast, this pittsburg neighborhood flooded before 5:00 a.m. driving through it, the windshield wipers had trouble keeping up and she knew that it was bart or nothing. why not drive? >> i am not stupid. >> bart got the computer problems cleared up by 8:00, and then they had another round of problems that caused another set of delays. a spokesman said the components "act up" wren they get wet. certainly there was a lot of

rain this morning. thanks, amy. this storm hit the south by first and hit it hard. nick joins us from san jose with a look at the problems. nick? >> the rain has alternated between heavy downpour and the light drizzle that you see right now all day long and it is the rain that is creating the hazard on the roadways. >> traffic in san jose started with challenges. the continued pounding of the rain pushed road debris in the direction of overwhelmed and clogged drains. this stretch of highway 87 near the taylor street bridge was such a hazard c.h.p. has to close two lanes of traffic. the water was as deep as 1.5' deep creating a huge wave as the cars trophy through. the driver of this sedan was not lucky. the driver and a small child were trapped in the car with nowhere to go until c.h.p. called the wrecker to haul the

driver and the car to safety. our cameras were in santa cruz where the front hit hard. huge amounts of run coming down in a steady stream covering this stretch lick a wet blanket. >> roads are slippery and wet. >> the pooling of waters is not unique. drivers were avoiding the pockets on julian. this has kept highway patrol busy. >> officers respond to solo spinouts and minor accidents and some moderate accidents including minor pain. >> danger isn't over. c.h.p. says as long as the rain continues history shows they will find themselves assisting drivers that find themselves in trouble. >> this the kind of debris we are talking about: trash that liters the highway we don't notice on normal days but in the rain it is a problem because it washes into the drain clogging the drapes and creating pooling.

thank you. the driver of this red car also had to be rescued after they tried to drive through deep water in san jose this remain. crews pulled them to safety after the car was struck. the photo tweeted by slow's fire department and the driver was not injured. >> that is amazing picture. look at this, urban search-and-rescue team rescued a stranded man at 5:30 this morning. officials think the man was living in a homeless encampment and ended up in that waist high water. we do not have any word on his condition. >> the stormy weather toppled a tree in san francisco's sunset district closing lanes at 37th. an s.u.v. crashed into a building at princeton. that driver escaped unharmed.

in the north bay pg&e removed a tree that fell on power lines. it happened an stony point road at 2:00 this morning. no one was hurt. officials say tree branches it will started smoldering while crews were cutting it up. according to pg&e power for people in that area was not affected. >> the rain means plenty of delays and cancellations for flights at san francisco international airport. so far, airlines have canceled 87 total flights at sfo. here is a look at the airport with the clouds looming over the airport. so far, oakland airport is reporting three canceled flights and san jose international airport is reporting nothing. officials at all three local airports urge you to check with the airline about flight status. >> this has been a miserable commute for caltrain passengers after a train broke down south of redwood city at 8:00 this morning. right now delays are running at least half an hour and i will show you at look at passengers trying to crowd on the platform in belmont.

the bad news is they still don't know what the substance was that caused this problem in the first place. it did concern the medical staff enough that they shut down the treatment area of the e.r. and called in a haz-mat team. the victim was brought in by ambulance at 5:00 this morning and he was exposed to some chemical, an unknown chemical. the hospital will not say what the symptoms were but doctors were worried enough to call in haz-mat team at 7:00 and then go black which means that paints before patients and ambulances were sent to other hospitals. >> they decontaminated the patient and out of caution the hospital goes "black," meaning no ambulances and no patients can go into the treatment areas. >> people who were already here were allowed to stay but people who were trying to come in for treatment, emergency treatment,

were sent to other hospitals. the victim is in the hospital right new in an isolate room while they continue to work on whatever it was that caused the situation. no evacuations were needed. the hospital says that all of this could have been avoided if the victim had been decontaminated before he was brought in to the e.r. by the ambulance crew. >> still to come, san francisco police officers accused of being on the wrong side of the law are in court right now. i thought it was...just to duck. >> a bay area man survives a freeway shooting on 580. it was a clothe brush with death. >> emergency crews braved the water to save two men and their best friend who got in over

five san francisco police officers are in federal court to answer charges they violated civil rights of people involved if drug cases. the investigation started when public defender released these surveillance videos in 2011 showing the officers going into residential hotels locking for people dealing drugs. the prosecution believe that the officers then illegally seized drugs, valuables and other possesses from people living inside the hotels. a former officer also faces charges. the officers have all been disarmed and suspended without pay. >> this morning, a bay area

driver is back home now counting his blessings after somebody shot at him on interstate 580 in castro valley during the commute yesterday. jake spoke with us after bullets barely missed him. c.h.p. is looking for the gunman the he was driving home from work at 4:00 when the silver four-door car pulled up alongside the older black chevrolet place he was driving and he saw four people in the car and the man in the front passenger seat point add gun at him, a handgun, and opened fire. >> he pulled the gun and i heard the "pop." the gunshots. the guy behind me said that there were at least ten shots. there were search on the truck. and holes. >> he said a bullet went through his cowboy hat and now it is his lucky hat. mike nicco has the forecast. mike? >> good morning, again, from the top of the broadcast center.

looking to my north, it is raining over angel island with a beautiful rainbow over fisherman 's wharf. you can see how scattered the showers are going to be the rest of the afternoon but they are going to be with us the rest of the afternoon through tomorrow. i will have an update on 50/50 weekend forecast with more rage possible next week. >> you could call it a rough rescue, firefighters saved stranded storm survivors through racing water.

in southern california you have to look at this: two men and two dogs were rescued from the los angeles river in cypress park. you can seat dogs stuck in a tree. they were caught in rising waters from a powerful rainstorm. the water was moving swiftly. crewed loaded both dogs into a raft in order to get them safely back to land. that river is usually so quiet, barely a trickle, a little creek. look at that: raging waters. >> the little dogs looked exhausted. they could barely walk. they must have been stuck for a long-term. >> almost not i saw a smile. >> in southern california, it is dicey from the storm. mike? >> i will take you down there with live doppler 7 hd after i show you the interesting happenings down there. they have a better chance severe weather than we do. some of the sprinkles are falling right now, another bit

of rain chance coming over downtown san francisco and right now, through rohnert park and petaluma toward sonoma and pulling out of napa that is where we have the best radar return across the not bay and burlingame and sfo headed up toward treasure island, that is where we will see the one cell and right there on the san mateo bridge, wow, heavy rain coming from the east or if you are headed to the west you will run right through it in foster city. there is the latest update, up to fremont and newark and milpitas and 880 and 680 you will run into light-to-moderate rain. look at more is developing to the south, and that is the waves of showers. do not let your guard down at any time today. in the south you can see the lines of storms rolling across, one headed to palm springs and san diego and another around santa barbara and under that, the red area, from santa barbara to san diego, that is a risk of

waterspouts that could come ashore down south. that is where some of the severe weather will head today. we will talk about winds that are coming right out of the south and they are going anywhere from eight to 22 miles per hour and our threat for the most part is widespread, it has dissipated and from the storms that are coming we will have locally heavy rains and the rain, when it comes down, creates its own wind and pulls wind from the middle of the atmosphere which is faster so we could have locally heavy winds also. showers taper tomorrow morning and inan settled pattern sunday through thursday but nothing like right now. a very mature system with a common shape of that, and the front is through there is still more moisture. if the sun comes out it adds to the instability in the atmosphere. through noon to about, say, 3:00, we get a break for maybe 3 to 6 and hopefully we get the evening commute and this evening, more showers through

8:00 tomorrow morning and continue they will be very scattered, if at all, during the saturday afternoon timeframe through sunday afternoon and well have another slight chance on sunday afternoon. rainfall amount, when all is said and done and we are close to the higher limits, 1" to 2" in the north bay and 2" to 4" in the south bay mountains. headed to the sierra, winter weather advisory until 10:00. the three day trust shows a lot of snow falling, today through tomorrow and a stray shower on sunday. sunday is a lot easier getting home than getting up there today. the seven-day forecast shows sunday is dry in the morning. early afternoon we have a spray shower. then a couple of slight chances of rain monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. the next telephone to 18 hours are the best bet of widespread heavy rain that could cause localized flooding and ponding. probably not flooding like this
