the storm off shore, you can see it's pushing wave after wave of showers in our direction producing thunderstorms as well. nice, soaking rains. over an inch in san francisco. over 9-tenths in san jose. and this is a look live overnight. so intense elements passed us now but there is more stormy weather on the way. >> spencer, thank you very much. now we have live team coverage of the by area storms with abc7 news reporter david louie.

we're going to start with jonathan bloom. it appears copper thieves made this problem worse jonathan? >> these criminals weren't rying to shut down a freeway, which they did. all they're trying to do was make a buck, ripping thousands of feet worth of wiring out of the pumps to suck rain water over the gully workers drained the lake of rain water that closed down highway 87. it wasn't mother nature to blame, but common criminals looking to make a buck. >> the copper wire thieves stole about 4,000 feet worth of water. >> the pumps are in windowless buildings acop a ridge down a private road with a locked gate.

>> the price increased 350%. it's become valuable. and that is why thieves goring to any and all lengths to steal it. there is a lot of money to be made >> and lost. caltrans estimates it spent 50 million taxpayer dollars repairing damage. >> metering lights. irrigation systems it's going to be vulnerable. >> caltrans says it's working with police and fortifying infrastructure. >> working with dealers to make sure if anything is stolen or if suspect it might be stolen that they take that motive away from the thieves. >> caltrans will have to the pumps ready. >> urban search and rescue team

had to go into the chilly water of coyote creek this morning around 5:30 this morning. >> and now, to the east bay checking on problem there's including a downed tree causing trouble. >> check out the creek here, residents say this rain runoff is very much welcome. pg&e crews dispatched across the east bay to repair lines pulled down by trees this, crew cleared out a large oak that fell during hard rain and wind here this morning. this crew made quick work of a

tree, that fell acrossleading t the road, unpassable all morning. >> unfortunately had a group rescheduling because the tree came down when they would have been at the house. so... we won't have been able to bring them back down. >> the house is a national historic site. this plastic bag factory got a serious soaking from sky seven hd. you can see the section of roof collapsed the owner says heavy rains may have caused it. it gave way and snapped a pipe for their fire control system spraying more water on the factory floor. some equipment was damaged and factory off line as crews worked to patch up the hole. in santa rosa, crews removed a tree that fell ask caught fire on lud wichlt g avenue this morning.

officials say tree branchs started smoldering. power for people in the area was not affected. now, santa cruz mountain communities were also hit hard by the storm. abc7 news reporter david louie is wlif that part of the storm watch coverage. >> agencies have been stnding by to handle emergencies because of the storm. one problem has been trees falling. >> when it rains, county provides sand for the sandbags but the job made tougher on gisela because she didn't have a shovel. . >> i have to come back. i'm just going to take one. putting in the worst place is coming into the storm. >> the stoefrm brought trees. crews moved in and tree services were out in force to, trim branchs that might bring down

power lines pg&e deployed teams to restore service. for all of the rain, local volunteer firefighters surprised there weren't any mudslides . >> i cleared rocks this morning. stof, so good. there is more still to come. >> residents said they experienced a strong gust forecast. >> the wind was naturally. it was blowing like you crazy. iet was like up the hill and lovely. exciting and fun. yeah. >> if the storm causes inconvenience, they shrug their shoulders. >> usually you have to zig zag down the hill. not today

stcoming. >> stay tuned. >> yes. stay tuned. >> in scots valley, abc7 news. >> well, rain and wind caused problems in san francisco. the great highway flooded and then, sand over the road as it does. waits closed much of the day but since reopened. >> and still going for drivers near interstate 280. the boulevard full of water. there was a sign warning drivers of what is head, several went ahead and took the plunge. >> as you can imagine it's been a hectic 24 hours for crews around the bay area. now, more than 1600 people around the bay area without power down from 13,000 about five hours ago. the latest numbers from pg&e show biggest cluster is in the south bay. nearly 900 homes and businesses are affected. 463 people are still in the dark in the north bay. 143 and 111 customers without electricity in the east bay and san francisco respectively.

at san ay's rain and wind francisco international airport. right now, delays averaging between 60 and 90 minutes. oakland international airport reported three cancellations. if you're head together airport you're urged to clek flight status online, first. >> now, we know the storms caused one serious injury. a man in fresno county hit by lightning. the 36-year-old found unconscious in a field just after 11:00 this morning. officials say his wounds were consistent with lightning strikes. the we don't have word yet on the condition. >> this is a good weekend for heading up to the sierra for the ski resorts. here is a look at new snow falling in heavenly mountain resort. up to 15 inches of new snow fell in some parts of the sierra. state water officials say snow pack remains just 24% of normal.

so a long way toechlth now, you can track rain back here in the bay area on our abc7 news weather app making it easier to share photos of how you're dealing with the rain. >> we have new details emerging tonight about the man killed in an officer-involved shooting on friday just off san jose state campus. his partner talked with abc7 news reporter vic lee. vick joins us live with the story you'll see only on abc7 news. vic? >> none of the agencies will talk. the partner event has plenty of questions, first, police say an officer fired a taser, well, did he miss? did the taser malfunction? more importantly, she asks why did they use lethal force?

>> nudging is going to bring back his father or pain he's going to go through and have to live with for the rest of his life. you know? that is what hurts. >> laurie valdez grieves not only because her partner is gone, but for the son they had together. valdez says the 4-year-old asks when his father will come home valdez says guzman lopez was a caring father. not only with her son but her daughter from a previous relationship. lopez was shot and killed friday. investigators say he opened fire when lopez who is carrying a dry wall cutting saw charged at another officer. police got a 911 call earlier in the day saying there was a man with a knife on campus. they found lopez blocks away. the coroner determined that the 38-year-old man died from two gunshots wounds to the back. >> how is that? they were afraid for their live? he was walking away. i don't understand. shooting him in the back?

there is a slight chance of showers sunday afternoon. so we have an active weather pattern for sure. here is a look the cold front that plowed through today. it pushed inland. that low pressure system is still out to sea. ace risk of thunderstorms, you aran flooding is still a possibility. high surf advise very in effect. taking a look at conditions south of us from southern monterey bay south ward. several more inches of rain expected. we, hear have a high surf advisory in effect from 8:00

this evening where you can see rip currents as well. going to be rough surf out there. aabout an inch from another tenth of an inch to half an inch into lower elevations talking about additional rainfall now. winter weather advisory in effect until 10:00 this evening. that includes 12 inches of day so far. in fact the bay area tonight areas of showers locally heavy, maybe a thunderstorm or two. low temperatures low 50s tonight. tomorrow, high temperatures will be on the mild side, mainly mid to upper 60s by afternoon. showers tapering off showing a period of active weather throughout the week with chances of rain 3, 4 out of the five days next week. more beneficial rain is on the way. >> spencer, thank you.
