you'd think that given the drought, that all this rain would be a welcome sight, but not here in glendora. because a wildfire scorched the foothills a month ago, so here those torrential rains mean mud, lots of it. a state that has been so parched suddenly seems overwhelmed with mother nature. rare funnel clouds in the skies, boulders hijacking highways. the sudden onslaught of rain brought hillsides into homes and transformed streets here in glendora into streams forcing many to evacuate. >> i don't see why i should have to evacuate. >> take their word for it and get out of dodge. >> reporter: four-legged friends had to be cared for too. animal control offered a crate service. evacuation had its challenges as did ordinary commuting. the rains caused traffic snarls and pileups across the state. posted on facebook, this car stuck in the mud after attempting to pass. >> the saturation effect is

starting to take over. the rivers that started with water that turned to mud now are actually coming from out of the streets. we have some severe mudflows. >> reporter: in the past 48 hours, california got more rain than it's had in the past year. normally the l.a. river resembles a glorified storm drain. today it looks like the mighty mississippi. much of the bay area are struggling too. >> limited service through the tube. >> reporter: with rain wiping through public transit computer systems, creeks crashing into backyards. some fled their homes in a hurry leaving prized possessions behind. >> i didn't know all this debris was going to be coming down. >> reporter: the rain is set to continue through tonight, and cleanup is many days ahead. the forecast does call for intermittent showers today but the good news, the heavy stuff, well, it should be gone tomorrow and otherwise at the big event out on that red carpet the accessories of choice may

be an umbrella and a good set of galoshes, dan. >> galoshes on the red carpet. i like the way that sounds. david, thank you for your reporting this morning. this thing is moving east and turning into a major snow and ice event. look at this. three people caught in an avalanche in montana. it buried their house. now the system is barreling towards some major american cities, and abc's alex perez is in chicago with the latest. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning, dan. relentless. this will go down as the third coldest and third snowiest winter chicago has ever seen. the shivering doesn't seem to stop. snow and ice wreaking havoc across the midwest this morning. >> it's terrible. it's terrible. it's not fit for man or beast. >> reporter: in missoula, montana, a massive avalanche damaged several homes friday prompting a townwide search and rescue that dug out three people from the wreckage. >> he just said there's an 8-year-old buried underneath some snow. there was an avalanche. grab a shovel.

>> reporter: all three found alive rushed to local hospitals. those remaining behind now left to dig out their town. in michigan, firefighters battled the elements. >> guys are getting froze up and they have to sit in the trucks to thaw out again. >> reporter: this winter has been treacherous for driving. the icy conditions are making cars lose control and causing accidents on the highways. one in minnesota yesterday taking the lives of three college students. for commuters and residents parking conditions are quickly becoming a nightmare giving us all a hard start to what should be the last month of winter. and the chicago area has seen more than two months this season of temperatures below freezing and there is more cold and more snow headed for parts of the midwest in the next few days. bianna. >> what should be the last month of winter is the operative word there that he chose. >> exactly. >> and those dreaming of warmer weather on the first day of march, well, it looks like we're going to have a long way to go.

let's see our spring countdown clock. it says 18 days. we can only hope. >> we need to cue some sort of pastoral music. >> yeah, the birds flying. sort of cinderella. >> i would be so excited not to be here right now. >> especially in new york. we're not going to see any butterflies in new york today, but we will see somebody we're happy to see. shay ryan from our tampa affiliate, yet another floridian we've dragged up here to the cold. our affiliate wfts joining us this morning. shay, i'm so sorry, but we love having you here. >> thank you and i'm glad to be here. i just wish i could have brought the warm air with me. unfortunately, there's more cold air, more winter weather to come, and it's all starting with this system we've been talking about in california. take a look at this area of low pressure, and it is again winding down, yet it's still packing a punch this morning with tornado warnings in effect in the los angeles area. and as you can see, it's going to continue to bring more rain today, some gusty winds, as well. we're still looking at anywhere from about 1 to 2 inches of additional rainfall from san francisco on south into san

diego, and as we take a look at how this system, once it winds down, then it turns into our winter storm, so, again, it picks up with this cold front, and this is where it continues to move across kansas city bringing heavy snow into new york, as well. we're talking widespread, 4 to 8 inches of snow. i'll have more on that bitter cold that is going to continue to sink in with this next system. dan and bianna. >> thank you very much for that. we appreciate it. a lot of other news overnight. so let's check the top stories with mr. ron claiborne. >> hi there. dan and bianna, sara, good morning, everyone. the faa is investigating another incident involving a green laser being pointed directly into the cockpit of an airplane. the pilot of a charter plane was taking off from hanscom field at 7:00 last night when he reported the incident. listen to this recording of the air traffic controllers as they received the call. >> unauthorized laser illumination event three miles west, altitude unknown. >> and the faa is investigating several laser incidents across

the northeast that occurred in just the past week. and in another airplane incident, this time involving birds, the pilot of an american airlines flight bound for washington, d.c. from dallas had to make a quick return to dallas/ft. worth airport friday night. according to the faa, a flock of birds apparently hit the aircraft or vice versa during takeoff causing the pilot to declare an emergency. the plane landed safely with no reported injuries. and we're getting now an inside look at just how the notorious mexican drug lord, joaquin "el chapo" guzman, managed to elude authorities for 13 years. mexican investigators searched seven homes that he owned, and in each one of them, he had a movable bathtub leading to escape tunnels. they also found security cameras in every room. guzman was arrested last saturday in a mexican resort town. he's being held at a maximum security prison. and oscar-winning actor philip seymour hoffman died of a

toxic mixture of drugs and prescription medication. according to the new york city medical examiner, hoffman died from a mix of heroin, cocaine and amphetamines. he was found dead inside his manhattan apartment with a needle in his arm. investigators found 50 packets of heroin inside his home. well, finally there is dancing in the streets of brazil, and that can only mean one thing, the world's biggest party, carnival. it's kicked off. millions of people from across the globe flocking to the south american nation to watch samba parades filled with dancing and vibrant costumes. the five-day celebration goes on until fat tuesday. i have a feeling some of those millions are doing more than watching samba parades. what do you think? >> what do you think they're doing exactly? >> imbibing among other things, a little dancing, a little partying, the kind of things we would do if we were there. >> too bad we didn't get that assignment. >> ron's imagination running wild. >> yeah. >> thank you, ron. now to the crisis overseas, one that some fear could pull in the united states. there are fast-moving and mysterious developments on the ground in ukraine.

who are the armed men taking up position in the crimea? that's a region close to russia, and is this the beginning of a russian invasion? abc's alex marquardt is in crimea with the latest. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. indeed, fast-moving and dramatic developments here this morning. you can see some of the pro-russia fervor right here behind me. the pro-russian prime minister here has said he is in control of the police and the army. he has asked russian president vladimir putin to intervene in crimea, a request the kremlin says it will not ignore stoking fears of a major escalation. they are unmistakable, russian military vehicles, a convoy of russian marines now operating on the roads of ukraine's crimea. a blatant show of force by russia fueling fears they plan to invade as ukraine accuses russia of bringing in thousands of troops. highly professional pro-russia armed units have taken control of crimea's parliament and

airports. these guys are patrolling quietly all around the airport. they're not being aggressive. we don't know who they are. in fact, they're not saying anything, and they have no identifying patches. what is clear is that they are on the side of russia and are rejecting the new ukrainian government. crimea may technically be a part of ukraine, but culturally and ethnically it is mostly russian. crimea did not support the uprising in the capital kiev, and many here would like to see it become part of russia. russia is already in crimea with bases for its black sea fleet and around 15,000 troops. but president obama on friday issued a harsh warning against any further military action. >> the united states will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in ukraine. >> reporter: russia's actions echoed the buildup to the 2008 war with its southern neighbor georgia. now moscow is vowing to defend its facilities and its people in crimea, but has told u.s.

officials it would respect the sovereignty of ukraine. even if the russian military doesn't deploy its own forces, it's clear that its allies already have and are quickly taking control of crimea. so the big question now is how will ukraine and the rest of the world respond? bianna. >> that's right. a lot of analysts calling this a global chess match between the two presidents. our thanks to you, alex. well, we're going to turn now to medical news and concern about a new painkiller that is ten times more potent than vicodin and is said that it could kill with just two pills. zohydro is set to hit the market early this month, but drug experts, addiction experts are worried that it could trigger a huge jump in overdoses and death. they're urging the fda to reconsider its approval. let's bring in chief health and medical editor dr. richard besser in. can you tell us more about this drug? is it really as potent as these experts are warning? >> this is strong. zohydro is straight hydrocodone which is a very strong narcotic and what we're seeing playing out here is a real battle within

the medical community between those doctors who take care of people with chronic pain and those who are concerned about addiction. there are millions of people with chronic pain and the fda says this gives them another tool for people who weren't being well handled by the existing drugs. the addiction community is very concerned because prescription pain medications are the gateway to heroin. they're the gateway to opiod addiction, and they're very concerned not about whether this will work for the pain patients but that it's going to get diverted to people who are going to use it for recreational purposes and lead to death. >> a gateway of sorts. >> that's right. that's right. >> one of these experts said this drug will kill as soon as it is released. can you talk about how easily accessible it is and the different ways people can use it and abuse it? >> yeah, i mean, the drug we always talked about was oxycontin which was diverted very regularly. that's now been reformulated so it's hard to crush and if you snort it, it's unpleasant. this drug is not in that preparation. so the concern is it's going to get diverted, it's going to go into the market and be used.

four out of five people who use heroin started with prescription pain meds. >> as we heard from philip seymour hoffman's death, as it'll be interesting to see what the fda does decide. they're usually very conservative about these issues. >> their own committee voted 12-1 that this should not be available to the community. they said it's safe and effective for pain people, but they're very concerned about the diversion. >> something i know you'll be following. rich, thanks so much for coming in. >> thanks, rich. a big debate this morning. and now to new images surfacing of oscar pistorius just days before we head into what may be one of the most watched murder trials on earth. the olympic star, sometimes phone as the blade runner, accused of killing his model girlfriend, and now we're seeing pictures of the two of them just days before the shooting, and abc's lama hasan is on the story in london this morning. lama, good morning to you. >> reporter: and good morning to you, dan. well, with one female judge and no jury, this is arguably the most anticipated murder trial in south africa, and as it's set to begin on monday, we are learning new details about the man who is at the center of it all, oscar

pistorius. south africa is calling it the trial of the century. the superstar sporting hero stands accused of murdering his model girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, on valentine's day last year. new exclusive images obtained by sky news show oscar pistorius at a gun range months before the killing took place reportedly using the same gun on that fateful night and this picture showing the couple in a supermarket seemingly in love. nicknamed the blade runner because of his prosthetic legs, pistorius has already admitted to shooting steenkamp at his home saying he mistook her for an intruder firing his weapon four times through a locked toilet door and killing her. the issue, was it murder? did he intend to kill her? >> his defense is it was a mistake and a reasonable person could have made the same mistake. fair enough, but that's a tough defense.

>> reporter: pistorius says he's kept a gun under his bed for security. he's always maintained it was all a tragic accident. the prosecution argues the shooting was deliberate. >> considering that oscar pistorius shot his own girlfriend in his own home multiple times, you would think it might be a victory for them if the judge only convicts him of the lesser crime of culpable homicide meaning it was a negligent shooting. >> reporter: well, his defense team is leaving no stone unturned hiring u.s. firm evidence room which specializes in producing animations of crime scenes and also turning to forensic scientist henry lee who as you'll recall gave evidence during the o.j. simpson trial. now, the oscar pistorius trial is expected to last up to six weeks. most of it will be televised. dan and bianna. >> of course, the world will be watching. lama, thank you. well, on a lighter note,

we're going to turn to our countdown to oscar sunday, just one day away from hollywood's biggest night, and the excitement is building, i would say, very fast. >> yeah, they're in the middle of furious rehearsals right now, presenters working out their preshow jitters and we're told that some of the vocal performances are so powerful, that they're bringing people to tears. abc's chris connelly got inside access, and he joins us live from hollywood. chris, did you cry? >> you know, i was verklempt. i was verklempt. good morning, guys. from outside the dolby theatre and on what will eventually be the red carpet once the rains pass and we get to clear away some of the stuff that's protecting the carpet, and you're right, oscar's producers lifting the veil for us on the big show giving us news you can use about all kinds of things including the evening's big theme and a host who gets it. ♪ can't keep up >> reporter: oscar producers neal marin and craig zadan say along with entertaining viewers at home, host ellen degeneres has a comedic game plan designed

to soothe those stressed out nominees. >> she said we need to understand that these people are scared to death. that's why we're not going to do all the comedy up front and as people are more and more nervous as the night goes on, she can relax them. >> reporter: ellen herself told robin roberts she'd be getting off the stage and getting into the mix. >> because i'll be in the audience a lot. there's going to be a lot of playing with people in the audience all throughout the show. >> we're bringing her into the audience so that you're going to her home for a dinner party and you're getting to hang out with ellen and these movie stars. >> reporter: the producing pair offered more tasty teases about what viewers can look forward to. ♪ come clean >> reporter: including news of one powerhouse pop star. ♪ just a little bit >> reporter: what can we expect to see pink do? >> here's the big reveal. pink is going to sing. ♪ where there is -- >> we're able to utilize pink in the oscar show in a way that the audience is not expecting to see her.

average. so we are talking extreme cold, and as we look further across into the midwest and beyond into the plains states, you can see that we've got windchills this morning at 50 below in minot, so, again, extreme cold, and this is all going to be spreading south and also to the east. you can see single-digit temperatures now. now we're talking about overnight lows, not even the windchill, so this is going to be lasting at least into tuesday, possibly beyond, so there's no significant warm-up in sight and not to, you know, insult, give you insult to injury, but take a look at beautiful florida. we're looking at temperatures near average and dry, so we've got more on the cold and the oscars' forecast coming up

>> reporter: the 41-year-old mother known by fans for her lavish spending habits and opulent new jersey mansion presumed to plead guilty to 4 of 38 charges against her including, abc news has learned, at least one count of fraud potentially serving two years in prison. joe, who is up against 41 counts still faces deportation to his home country, italy. federal prosecutors allege joe and teresa, quote, engaged in mail and wire fraud, bank fraud and bankruptcy fraud from 2001 to 2011. >> you want me to do anything? >> reporter: just earlier this month, the reality star told abc news' amy robach about her fears. >> i just can't be upset and crawl up in a ball and just go in a room and lock the door. i can't. i'm a mom. i have four daughters. >> but when the door is shut and they are in bed, do you get to do that? >> yes, and i do do that. i mean, i would be lying to say that's not happening. >> reporter: fears that may become the couple's new reality. >> you say you got to be strong

for the wife and kids. how do you do that with so much uncertainty? >> you have to. you really have to. i mean you got to be strong-minded, number one. if you're weak, you're not going to make it. >> reporter: abc news reached out to the attorneys for both teresa and joe. teresa's attorney declined to comment, and joe's haven't responded to our calls. in the end if this deal is struck, this will all still play out in court. a judge must approve the final details. bianna, dan. >> big question for that couple heading forward. ryan, thank you. let's get another look at the morning's top stories and back over to ron. >> hey, ron. >> hi again, dan and bianna. good morning, everyone. in the news we begin with the escalating tension in ukraine where pro-russian military, militia group, that is, are reportedly in control of the three main civilian airports in the strategic region of crimea. this comes after president barack obama warned moscow there would be costs if it intervenes militarily in ukraine. back at home,

four were shot at a tax preparer's business in detroit. police say that a 19-year-old girl became upset that the preparer did not have her refund th opened fire. four employees were wounded. one of them critically. the man and woman are in custody. and 28 people from five states that were arrested in a $21 million insurance fraud scheme allegedly involving former new york city police and firefighters, that is in addition to 106 people arrested last month. the suspects are accused of fraudulently collecting years' worth of disability benefits for posttraumatic stress that they claimed was caused by the september 11th attacks in new york city. and finally, take a look at this new video of bao bao, the panda cub that everyone seems to have fallen in love with including sara here. bao bao is seen target training. that is what it's called, teaching her to follow a target. in this case a purple ball and touch it with her nose. this type of training will allow keepers to safely position her in order to take care of and examine her when they are no longer able to be in the same enclosure with the panda. they get a lot larger than that
