one he picked. >> no matter what, you know he'll answer it honestly. all right, all right, all right. also a lot of heads turning on the red carpet. dramatic dresses really standing out. cate blanchett, angelina jolie. both just shined so bright on that red carpet. >> all kinds of highlights ahead. first we want to get to the latest on this massive storm back east. our extreme weather team tracking the latest on the winter blast affecting tens of millions right now. ginger, what do you got? >> this storm started here. it started as record rains in parts of los angeles, other parts of california, too. but it's on the move. all that energy has its target on washington, d.c., parts of west virginia, kentucky. this thing is not just snow, it's sleet and a whole lot of mess. let's get to gio. he'll bring us the rest of the story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, ginger, good morning to you from the famous "rocky" steps. you can see these plows working here in philadelphia.

we're seeing a mix of snow and sleet here in philly. and all across the nation, an icy mess. take a look. this morning, blinding snow. and pounding sleet. >> talk about sleet coming down. >> reporter: attacking half the nation. from texas to oklahoma -- [ thunder claps ] ground-shaking thunder snow. and this rare sight in norman, oklahoma. thunder sleet lightning. in southern illinois, car windshields transforming into blinding sheets of solid ice. in wichita, kansas, an ice road nightmare. hundreds of weather-related accidents leading to at least eight deaths. in arkansas, this suv losing control and plunging right off a bridge injuring two and killing one. this semi in oklahoma city, overturning and ripping open. the irony, it was hauling cat litter, often used for melting

ice. on that same highway, countless vehicles crippled by unbearably slick conditions. >> this car was sliding. they asked if i could reverse. i couldn't even reverse. if i reversed and hit this car in front of me. >> reporter: it's part of the same system that caused this 100-car black ice pileup in denver on saturday, killing one person. you have to be careful out there. all of us out in this know it has been an incredibly snowy winter. but just here in philadelphia we've seen more than five feet of snow so far this winter. ginger, back to you. >> so far above average, it feels like the winter that will never end. it will. by tonight, this storm moves on. but before it does so, here is what you can expect additional, on top of what you already have. say you have two, three inches of sleet, yeah, you could get some snow on top and then really record colds this morning, robin that are coming right in everywhere from kansas city, sub zero. we're missing that.

>> as you know, ginger, some parts of the country bracing for the snow. others are getting covered in ice. alex perez is in louisville, kentucky, with more on that. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. ice is the problem in many parts of the south. there's concerns that ice buildup on power lines could lead to massive power outages. of course in this kind of weather, ice can form just about anywhere. i want you to look behind me here. on this pedestrian bridge. those are isocals all along that bridge created by this storm. there is ice on the roadways. many people are waking up to find their cars are coated in ice just like this. just another problem that people are dealing with. now, authorities have closed schools in the area and they're asking anyone who does not have to leave their home to do them a favor and stay inside their houses. robin? >> good advice. thank you, alex. ice and snow means a lot of flight cancellations. david kerley has the latest from reagan national airport there in

washington. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin, to you. here is the good news. they've been able to keep the runways clear here. it's starting to snow harder. here's the bad news here at reagan national. look at the gates. all through this airport, there are no aircraft. so nobody is going anywhere. already this morning we have seen 2,000 cancellations. expect that number to rise as we get through the day. here's what we're seeing around airports across the country. they're deicing planes in all these areas that are cold that you have heard from. philadelphia, up the east coast, in the ohio valley as well. does this seem like it's been happening a lot? well, it has. here are the latest stats. this year alone we have had more cancellations in the first six months of last year and nine months of 2012. and robin, i don't know about people in los angeles who may want to fly east, might be little bit difficult later today. >> you're looking at five people that are going to face that.

but that's okay, david. >> my point exactly. >> okay. we appreciate that very much. >> boy, he looks so cold out there. we're going to move to the latest on the crisis in ukraine. russian troops are settling in after taking control of crimea over the weekend. as president obama and the west face growing pressure to act it's become the most serious confrontation with russia since the cold war. financial markets dropping all over the world. terry moran is on the ground in ukraine right now. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. russian forces are in complete control of this part of the ukraine, the crimean peninsula. and they are giving every sign that they are here to stay. it's all like a bad dream from the soviet past. russian forces in the thousands seizing territories. armored vehicles lining the roads. the russian navy pouring in more forces. and ukraine's outgunned, outnumbered troops imprisoned on their own bases. by stone, silent russian soldiers. the big question now, can vladimir putin get away with it?

secretary of state kerry told george stephanopoulos there will be a tough response from u.s. and allies. >> russia may be able to invade crimea. but in the end, russia will isolate itself. >> reporter: already, the markets are punishing putin with the ruble, russia's currency, plunging to all-time lows. but the deed is done. here in crimea, most people have welcomed the russian troops rejecting the pro-western revolution in the other half of their country last week. it's calm on the surface. but as we spoke with a woman holding a ukrainian flag a tiny gesture of defiance against russia, we saw the fierce passions just below the surface. civil war is now a real possibility in ukraine. diplomacy with the russians in control here is where the action is. president obama struggling to come up with some kind of approach that is creative enough to diffuse the tensions and strong enough to get russia to back down. there is no sign of that,

"gravity" got the awards it should have. and "12 years a slave" their's. and the two stars of "dallas buyers club" just perfect on and off screen. among the winners, matthew mcconaughey and jared leto. you could see that same type of chemistry last night. i spoke with -- i was speaking with jared and then look who shows up back stage. >> and the oscar goes to -- >> reporter: if there was one win to bet on -- >> jared leto. >> reporter: jared leto had everyone buying in. the 42-year-old taking home the first award of the night for his supporting role as rayon, a hiv-positive transgendered woman in "dallas buyers club."

>> in 1971 louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. she -- uh -- was a high school dropout. and a single mom. that girl is my mother. i love you, mom, thank you for teaching me to dream. >> reporter: that's a big shoutout to your mom. >> she did. she had really challenging circumstances, and she made a better life for herself and in turn for me and my bro. she's everything. >> reporter: leto's shocking transformation began before he got the role. is this a true story, you auditioned via skype? >> i did. it wasn't really an audition, it was a meeting with the director. someone grabbed me lipstick. i reached and put it on right after i said hello. i took off my jacket. i had a pink sweater on pulled over my shoulder. i proceeded to flirt with him a little bit like rayon probably would have. and i woke up the next morning with the part. so i guess it worked.

>> and a couple hours later, the guy who gave him his shot got the oscar himself. you spoke with him backstage. just so full of -- i love those unscripted moments backstage when they can be together like that. >> to see the connection they had on the screen, to see it endure especially on the the biggest night of their lives. it was great. >> how about some other news? what is being called a major step in the fight against diabetes, a disease that affects nearly 30 million americans. scientists have identified a rare gene that can lower your risk of getting type ii diabetes by as much as 65%. even protecting high-risk obese people from the disease. drug companies such as pfizer are now racing to develop a medication that will act like that gene. though they admit the process could take at least a decade. in new york today, osama bin laden's son-in-law, abu ghaith, goes on trial, becoming the highest ranking member of al qaeda to be tried on u.s. soil.

abu ghaith was the terror network spokesman after the 9/11 attacks. an anonymous jury will be selected for security purposes. abu ghaith has pleaded not guilty to terrorism and conspiracy charges. also happening today. president obama sits down with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu at the white house. one day after warning that time is running out for a peace deal with the palestinians. the president warned that if peace talks fail, the u.s. will have limited ability to protect israel from the international fallout. a chaotic scene at the white house sunday. hundreds of demonstrators chained themselves to the fence and spread across pennsylvania avenue refusing to move. they were protesting the prosupposed keystone oil pipeline. claiming it would damage the environment. nearly 400 people were arrested in the protest. and finally, one of the great golf shots you will ever see. it came on the 18th hole in a playoff round in a women's

driver involved is cooperating with police. earlier this morning an hour away there was a head-on collision. the drivers of both vehicles are suspected of drunk driving. a 33-year-old woman was in one vehicle with her four-year-old daughter. they suffered serious injuries and they were taken to a hospital in critical condition. the rest of the commute, here is sue hall. >> that was pretty much both of those were the big commute stories of the morning. so fortunately as you mentioned, the accident has been opened. washington at oliver remains close pd. highway 1 shut down at highway 84 due to a head-on collision.

>> we'll get into it. >> we do begin with the trial of oscar pistorius. he is facing charges in south africa for killing his girlfriend last year. it has become the trial of the century in that country. cameras in the courtroom and hamish macdonald has the latest from pretoria. >> reporter: facing the cameras on his journey to facing justice. oscar pistorius is guided into court past the family of the woman he killed, reeva steenkamp's mother said she wants to look him in the eye and see the truth. but this morning, there's no eye contact. misser to yaus faces four charges and a possible life sentence. >> how do you plead? >> not, my lady. >> his fate is in the hands of this judge who has the job of ignoring the frenzy. >> this is probably the biggest trial of the century. certainly so far it is. >> reporter: the defense claims it was a tragic mistake. pistorius thought steenkamp was an intruder in the home. he acted in self defense. prosecutors allege it was

deliberate. he opened fire during an argument in early hours of valenti valentine's day last year. the prosecution will claim he was reckless and gun happy. new images show pistorius on a gun range,i shooting the pistol that killed steenkamp. there is evidence of a flirtatious and loving couple. >> we're looking at a double tragedy, really. because no matter what happens, his life will never be the same again. >> reporter: the trial is due to last three weeks, but a long list of witnesses mean it could last much longer. spending the last few hours inside that courtroom, i can tell you it is truly incredible in there. reeva steenkamp's family is sat shoulder to should we are oscar's family. george, none of them are even looking at each other. >> thank you, hamish. get back to the oscars now. josh what an interview with cate blanche

pump. wholesale gas prices are up nearly four cents per gallon today. the other big story this morning, the weather. a snow emergency declared in the nation's capital. most federal offices in washington, d.c. closed. the mid-atlantic region braces for up to a foot of snow. thousands of flights, meanwhile, are canceled or delayed. ginger's complete forecast in a moment. the suspect in a brazen gold heist in florida is being sent back to the u.s. to face charges. authorities say they found him hiding in bushes, trying to sneak across the border from belize to guatemala. valdez stands accused of stealing nearly $3 million in gold from a courier back in miami in 2012. the largest gold heist in florida's history. that gold has not yet been recovered. important news for parents. the popular machines many parents use to help their babies fall asleep at night? they may be damaging their children's hearing.
