are you in? . >> new break in the serial murder of 5 bay area women. tonight the new evidence that may link the crimes to yet a sixth killing. good evening. carolyn is off tonight. nearly 40 years after those murders the fbi has new information. and amma is here with the stor story. after all of this time. >> yes. dan. all these years later the families and friends of the 5 bay area victims have been left wondering who murdered their loved ones. cases very similar in nature went cold years ago. but tonight the search for the killer is very much back on. there's a new twist in some very old bay area murder cases. leading the fbi to launch a task force to reinvestigate the so-called gypsy hill murder from his 1976. these 6 young

women were murdered between january and april of that year. 5 victims lived on the peninsula. 18-year-old veronica castillo, 14-year-old tanya blackwell, 17-year-old paula baxter, 26-year-old carol booth, and 19-year-old denise lamp. now nearly 4 decades later the fbi has new evidence suggesting the killer killed a reno nursing student, too. >> the reno murder occurred in between the time frim of our 5 murders and recent evidence that has been uncovered lead to us believe the reno murder linked to several of our murder. >> but in reno in 1979 this woman katie wood confessed to mitchell murder convicted and serving a life sentence. law enforcement sores tells us dna evidence led to the conviction but believe she had a male accomplice who may have committed other murder.

detectives who worked one of the local murder are glad the cases are being re-examine inked. >> love it. it's going to be if anything is going to solve it, this will. >> gypsy task force consist of federal agents and police from san mateo oshtion daly city, south san francisco and knocking on doors to jog people memory and get new information that could lead them to the killer. >> which would be terrific. after all these years. thanks very much. >> happening right now, 2 pedestrians accidents in san francisco under investigation. the first happened around 9 tonight at folsom and 5th street this car windshield shows the force of the impact. officer at the scene told us that the pedestrians suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. and then just minutes later yet another pedestrians was hit by a car while walking on van ness at turk in the city. that person was transported to the hospita hospital. no word yet on the condition. just today the city announced would it spend 17 million dollars to improve

>>reporter: 11-year-old blake of walnut creek remembers november 25 of last year quite well. it was the day sparks flew above his head instead of from his video game. >> spark an explosion of spark but like a little explosion of sparks and then we saw it and then we are like oh, this is good. >>reporter: turns out the sparks were come from the led light bulb on the ceiling. flames about an inch long shot out. until his dad quickly put out the fire. >> up there is where it happened. that also light. could you see like black mark from the sparks in the fire. >>reporter: john is with the underwriter laboratory and independent third party that test product for safety. >> many led bulb have power supply and the power supply consist of many different kinds of components and if something goes wrong with the component you could have a fire. >>reporter: since 2012 there have been 9 voluntary recall of

led lights that compares to no recalls during the same period for incandescent bulb and none related to fluorescent light. both consumer product safety commission and ul believe led lights are safe. >> led fires are rather rare. the fact is led light bulb are really very low energy and they don't get as hot as incandescent lamp. >> at the home depot sales in the bay area of led lights have surpassed both fluorescent and incandescent lights. led are more expensive but with the 18 year life span save in energy cost. >> that will save you 138 dollars in energy savings for the life time of this light bulb. >>reporter: because they are so new no statistics are available for led related fire fires. from 2000 7 through 2011 there were an average of 4 deaths and 24 injuries annually relateed to fires from

incandescent light fixtures nationwide. during the same time period there were 4 death and 20 injuries annually blamed on fires from fluorescent bulb bulbs. janet olson of saratoga was on her stair master two years ago when she recalls seeing sparks inside the glass bowl on her led lights. you can see from these pictures we obtained from the consumer product safety commission how charred the small fire left the socket. jane worries about her children and switched back to fluorescent flight have had their own problem. >> in that room i think we have out right now. they don't last as long. >> my recommendation would be to go with the led more option have come out. >>reporter: that seems to be the general consensus among energy experts. this family purchased its bulb from lowe that said it looked into the fire and concluded it was an isolated incident. the olson
