good monday morning. i'm john muller. >> i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. we begin with the desperate search for that malaysia boeing 777 gone for more than two days now without a trace. >> an american destroyer has joined more than two dozen other ships in the china sea but still nothing to report. >> abc's tahman bradley joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning, john and marci. teams have searched more than 50 nautical miles from where the aircraft was last spotted. u.s. technical experts are en route to asia to assist. search and rescue teams continued scouring the maritime border between malaysia and vietnam lacking for wreckage. a plane spotted a rectangular object originally thought to be the boeing 777s door, but ships could not find it. >> we have not found anything that appeared to be object from the aircraft, let alone the

aircraft. >> reporter: authorities are waiting for the result of samples from oil slicks in the south china sea. malaysia airlines told the families of the 239 people onboard to prepare for the worst. american passenger philip wood's mother is still very shocked. >> if you want to know how it feels to lose a son at the age of 50, it's devastating. um -- but i know in my heart that philip's with god. >> reporter: military radar suggests the plane may have been turning around before it vanished. but there was no mayday or any communication. and the plane was flying at cruising altitude. >> that is a really, really safe place to be. which makes this mystery all that much deeper. >> reporter: an urgent investigation is under way to identify two individuals who boarded the flight using passports stolen in thailand. the tickets of the two imposters

appear to have been bought around the same time, suggesting they perhaps coordinated. malaysian authorities could not answer why the men were able to board the flight using passports that were reported stolen. sources say without the black boxes or debris from the plane, it's impossible to know what happened, whether it was pilot error, mechanical error or terrorism. >> tahman, only a handful of countries check interpol's travel database. there's video of the people using the stolen passports. have authorities figured out who the people are? >> reporter: that's a problem, countries not checking that list. u.s. intelligence agencies hope to get their hands on that video you mentioned, to see the two individuals' faces. to compare it to known terrorists or criminals. the stolen passports may have been tied to drug smuggling, unrelated to the plane's disappearance. >> tahman bradley, live in washington, thank you. and that malaysia airlines flight was bound for beijing. anguished families of passengers

are still waiting near the airport there for news. >> bob woodruff filed this report moments ago. >> reporter: families of the passengers are living together here at the hotel. in beijing, where i have been for the last couple of days. they are certainly anxious. at times, they're angry that the disappearance of the plane really remains a mystery. they just want to know where their loved ones are. for the past few days, the families have been trying to get visas to go to malaysia, where the malaysian airline is. today many of them told us they changed their mind. they want to wait. they don't want to go back there until the bodies are found. they're certainly, certainly starting to lose hope. bob woodruff, abc news, beijing. >> our thanks to bob for that. stay with abc news for the continuing coverage of the disappearance of flight 370. the latest coming up on "good morning america." breaking news from overnight. from northern california. a powerful earthquake off the coast.

that night resumes testimony today. he called pistorius after hearing about gunshots from neighbors, he called pistorius, who said everything was fine. new this morning, the father of the sandy hook gunman is breaking his silence. peter lanza talked to "the new yorker magazine" for an article titled reckoning. peter lanza says every hour he thinks about the massacre that happened 15 months ago when his son adam shot and killed 20 school children and 6 staffers. he said in a recent nightmare, he saw man in a doorway with quote, the worst possible evilness. he said he grew scared and realized he was seeing the shooting from the perspective of the victims. peter lanza says he doesn't know what he could have done to prevent the tragedy but he wishes his son had never been born. he's taken down all the family photos in his house and even thought about changing his name. one family said they forgave adam. peter says he didn't know how to respond to that. he said if he could change places with the victims' families, he would. a top scientist is

the good news if you're flying, no major airport delays are expected. back to the news. a lot of questions about the collapse of a high school theater stage. >> amateur video caught the terrifying moments. the students were nearing the end of their performance when, without warning, the stage collapsed. >> if you look at how high the students were, the stage is about six feet built off the ground. with them standing, a fall of anywhere from eight to ten feet. it's a significant fall. >> everyone was crying. we were all, like, freaking out because we didn't know like if someone was seriously hurt or what was happening. >> investigators suspect the likely cause was too many students and too much weight on the stage. 24 were hospitalized with minor injuries. from tampa, an extraordinary view of a collision between a skydiver and a small plane pilot bade world war ii veteran. >> despite the heart-stopping acrobatics, both of them escaped with just minor injuries.

linzie janis has the story. >> reporter: a sky diver and a pilot have a miraculous survival story to share after they collided in midair. all of it caught on camera. >> as the shutter is clicking away, i -- i realized that i'm seeing something that, uh, uh, is certainly spectacular. >> reporter: right before impact, a small cessna plane flying straight toward a skydiver's parachute. as both come in for a landing. then, just above the ground, the nose of the plane slices right through the stringings of the chute, sending 49-year-old john frost flying through the air before slamming him into the ground. at the same time, the pilot loses control, crashing into the ground at a 90-degree angle. the nose crunching right up to the cockpit. >> when you see an airplane crash into the ground, your first thought is oh, my gosh, what happened? >> reporter: for both men, the ordeal was far from over. as is single-engine cessna

>> firefighters have been busy overnight possibly affecting children. we are at an elementary school. matt? >> i am on the campus of the elementary school. this is one scene that came in early this morning, the ymca day carest on the elementary school campus. the fire started on the bottom exterior causing enough damage that firefighters will block it off. crew will call the principal to get another building for the day care this is from the first report of a fire on the little league field at warm springs elementary school starting at 2:40. it was damaged. the third and final fire
