perez. >> and i'm john muller. we begin with a fourth day and still no sign of a missing malaysian passenger jet. exhausted families waiting for news in fear and disbelief about how little is known about this plane's disappearance. >> many have gathered at a hotel near the airport in beijing for updates that are few and far between. their anger is beginning to grow as the search for the plane intensifies. our team coverage begins with abc's tahman bradley. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: marci and john, good morning. the search began in the area where the plane went off the radar. now it is expanded into areas this plane could have reached given the amount of fuel it was carrying. malaysian police say this man, a 19-year-old iranian is one of two men who boarded malaysia flight 370 using stolen passports. they believe he was trying to seek asylum in germany and has no ties to terrorism. authorities continue to run background checks on all the passengers.

>> we are looking into four areas. one is hijacking, two, sabotage, three, psychological problem of the passengers and crew and, four, personal problem among the passengers and the crew. >> reporter: there's still no sign of the boeing 777. the search now in its fourth day has expanded beyond the plane's flight path. aircraft, ships and even a submarine are scouring the waters off the southern coast of malaysia and a land search is under way in vietnam. >> we need to keep an open mind, continue the search, find the wreckage, find those black boxes and begin to solve this mystery. >> reporter: special ships and the submarine need to be within five to ten miles to hear the pinging noise from the black boxes. finding them in the wreckage will be crucial to figuring out what happened. >> nothing causes an airplane to come down from 35,000 feet other than things that can be catastrophic. >> reporter: on land for the families of the 239 people on

board, agony. they're bracing for the worst and are angry about the lack of information. organizers are following up on every ream lead. >> that includes word that mh 370 might have tried to head to another airport. bob woodruff with this report. >> reporter: the search is intensifying. 34 helicopters, about 40 ships, even submarines are now looking around to see. malaysian authorities are saying the radar suggests that maybe the boeing carrying these 239 people en route from kuala lumpur to beijing may have done a turnaround, that it maybe have gone out over the sea and then flipped the other direction. so this is how they're now looking. why would it turn around? it was perfect weather. it was flying about 35,000 feet. that's the safest part of the flight. so why is it that it would have disappeared? the plane was also tracked by radar as it soared out into the

ocean, but that commercial radar only reaches about 250 miles into the sea, so that too has not found anything. we also learned that the chinese have deployed another ten satellites to look out over the seas so anybody -- that they can find someone or some evidence, some debris that will show where this plane may have gone, but right now it remains very much a mystery. bob woodruff, abc news, beijing. a private satellite company in colorado is launching a unique effort in the search for the missing malaysia airlines jet. >> digital globe is focusing cameras from five of its orbiting satellites on the gulf of thailand region producing ultra high-resolution images. anyone can examine those images if they want. they can go to the website. it's called tomnod.com, and you can tag anything that looks suspicious. >> and stay with abc news for the latest developments on malaysia lines flight 370. live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." well, another day of testimony under way at the murder trial of oscar pistorius. it follows his breakdown in court yesterday. the pathologist who conducted

the autopsy on reeva steenkamp's body continued testifying this morning about the gunshot wound she suffered. during the doctor's graphic testimony yesterday, pistorius became physically ill while sitting in that courtroom. today japan is marking the third anniversary of a triple disaster. the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown. prayers began at dawn in the now deserted town at the center of the catastrophe where at least 16,000 people were killed. tens of thousands of residents who lost their homes on what the japanese call 3/11 are still living in temporary housing. negotiations between the u.s. and russia on how to solve the ukraine crisis have stalled, so now the u.s. is working to convince china to abandon its neutral stance and support u.s. attempts to isolate russia. russian president vladimir putin says russia is putting together its own plan for a negotiated solution. controversial author joe mcginniss died monday of prostate cancer. at 26 mcginniss wrote "the selling of the president" in 1968, which chronicled the marketing of candidate richard nixon.

in his 1983 book, "fatal vision," it focused on the murder trial of army doctor jeffrey macdonald. more recently mcginniss had made headlines moving in next door to sarah palin while writing his unauthorized biography of the former alaska governor. mcginniss was 71. a rare unanimous agreement on capitol hill. the senate passed a bill giving more protection to military sexual assault victims by making big changes to the military justice system. the vote was 97-0, but it faces an uncertain fate in the house. meanwhile, this morning at ft. bragg the court-martial of an army general on sexual assault charges is on hold. the judge ruled that jeffrey sinclair should have been allowed to offer a plea bargain. the judge said criticism about how the military handles sexual assault cases may have influenced that decision. sinclair must decide by this morning whether to make a plea offer. the lights are actually still on in the senate with some

senators pulling an all-nighter. more than two dozen democrats are up at this hour hoping to wake up congress about climate change. there's no specific legislation. these are live pictures. earlier massachusetts senator ed markey read from what he called a great environmental classic, "the lorax" by dr. seuss. he read the part that says, "unless someone cares an awful lot, nothing will get better." >> and some say climate change is responsible for this winter's extreme weather. hundreds of people in montana are cut off by swollen rivers and impassable roads. more than half of the state is under some type of high water warning. warm weather this week after record snowfall is pushing many rivers and streams over their banks, and there is more rain and snow in the forecast. a happier side to the break in the weather from chicago now. it was so nice out yesterday, people were wearing shorts and skirts, even out washing the windows. there's been snow on the ground in chicago for 70 straight days. as much as 2 inches may have melted yesterday, but there is more on the way today.

all right. let's take a look at the weather from across the nation. snow in the forecast for the upper plains states and a mix of snow and rain south of the great lakes. there will be just rain in denver and the south. >> high temperatures in the southwest will be in the 70s and lower 80s today. only in the 30s for the northern plains and upper midwest. 10 to 20 degrees warmer than usual in the northeast. american astronaut mike hopkins along with two russian cosmonauts landed safely in kazakhstan this morning after almost six months on the international space station. >> hopkins on his first space mission logged over 70 million miles orbiting earth more than 2,600 times. hopkins also posted 106 tweets from space to his 52,000 followers. >> that's a lot of green. the numbers are in showing the staggering amount of money colorado is making in marijuana sales tax. shocking admission. two teens seen acting suspicious in the woods stunned police officers when the officers asked what they were up to. plus, pet problems.

welcome back. sales of recreational mar juan 2345 added over $2 million to colorado's coffers and just for the month of january and from only 59 stores that filed returns. the state now has 167 stores that are licensed to sell pot. retailers pay a tax of nearly 28% on marijuana sales. the pizza sane sbarro is filing for bankruptcy again. the second time in three years. just last month sbarro announced plans to close more than 150 locations. the company blames a big decrease in customers at malls.

apple is releasing an update to ios 7 that includes carplay that allows them to access several iphone features on the car's dashboard and makes improvements to siri and the iphone camera. cost conscious brides are looking forward to the end of the month. that's when h&m debuts its $99 wedding gown. it is hoping to attract buyers not swayed by those tv wedding dress shop shows that seem to send the message you have to pay a lot to get something good. billboard's top earners list is out. when it comes to touring and sales, pop country star taylor swift is way out in front. the 23-year-old seven-time grammy winner took in over $39.5 million last year. >> next country artist kenny chesney who made nearly $33 million. >> in third, justin timberlake with 31 million bucks. >> not too shabby. the ski pa told on a mountain purposely triggered an avalanche but things did not go

this controlled avalanche was supposed to prevent problems, not cause them. but instead it took out the ski resort's highest elevation chair lift. then the avalanche messed up the beginner's slope. the ski resort was closed at the time. no one was hurt and it'll take at least a week to clean up the beginner's slope. the chair lift won't be repaired until this summer. take a look at the morning road conditions. no avalanches, but you might want to watch out for rain and snow along interstate 80 and other highways in the upper midwest. roads slippery from the gulf coast up to the great lakes. >> flying, airport delays possible in denver, kansas city, chicago and new orleans. and back to the news.

two texas teens shocked police when they ran out of a wooded area and told approaching officers they were there to bury a body. >> the two junior high students, juniors in high school have been charged now with murdering a 17-year-old senior because the girl -- one of them was dating the girl. now police believe it was planned for over a week and took place at the high school. all three attended. we will have much more on the story coming up on "good morning america." north carolina television viewers saw a dramatic rescue live. authorities called in the national guard, helicopter there to rescue a man who had fallen while mountain climbing. he was stuck on that cliff for hours. no one else could get to him. the rescuers had a dangerous mission there. the black hawk crew had a long climb down and close approach to the face of that cliff. a ferocious house cat in oregon forced its owners to call 911. the cat's name is lux and its owners said it attacked their baby sunday night and was hissing and acting up so much that they had to lock themselves

in a bedroom for their own anti-inflammatory. the baby's mother said given the choices they had calling for help was their only option. >> only funny when it's not happening to you. when this happens to you, i assure you you will do the same thing. >> the incident started when the baby pulled the cat's tail then after the cat scratched the baby his father kicked the cat which set off lux's attack. the couple is considering what to do with the cat next. boston university is investigating charges that its woman basketball coach has been bullying her players. four players have quit the team walking away from their scholarships. one player said coach kelly greenberg's bullying even made her consider suicide. greenberg faced similar accusations and a university review back in 2008 when two other scholarship players quit the team. so what's more important making sure you retrieve an overthe fence baseball or keeping a close eye on your child. >> all right. well, the answer for one mets fan retrieving the ball, of course.

game he collapsed on the stars bench. doctors treated him in the tunnel for what they called a card event and regained consciousness later taken to a hospital. he is in stable condition. but will remain there for observation. peverley is in his eighth season, first with the stars and came over in an off-season trade with the bruins and helped boston win a stanley cup three seasons ago. last september he had that procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat a condition discovered in his preseason physical. stars are scheduled to play at st. louis later tonight. now back to you. >> our best to him and his family. now we'll lighten it up with our "play of the day." it happened at the weekend's pga event in puerto rico >> that's where an iguana got up and close real personal with a pro's ball and pokes it a couple of types. maybe he thinks it's an egg. couldn't fit it in his mouth so eventually left it alone in his player took his next stroke from there.
