francisco's mission bay neighborhood. you are looking live 23r* sky 7hd. the building is still smoldering tonight. they are making sure there are no flare ups. >> and this is what it looked like earlier. a raging inferno and flames shooting 50 feet or more from the building under construction as the building collapses. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson.roke outt fourth and china basin streets a few blocks from at&t park a block from the ucsf mission bay campus. >> alan wang is live with our coverage. alan? >> dan and carolyn, the battle 1* taperin seeie are seeing fewer hoses on the fire, and we are seeing a few engines starting to pull out. from the beginning these firefighters were on the defensive. they were trying to keep the massive blaze from spreading. by night fall firefighters were snuffing out a fire that

could be see around the bay. >> it was insane how big it got. i was worried it would spread to this building. >> linda gruben came home when she noticed several frantic firefighters. >> they followed me in. they pulled the fire alarm and said everybody needs to evacuate. >> about 30 tenants raced out anded immediately felt the heat even though the windows were too hot to touch. >> you couldn't see them crash, but you could hear them cracking from the heat. >> the plan is to put every ak it down.ose on the fire a do. that meant calling the water department and diverting more esh prer to the hydrants -- more pressure to the hydrants. it is almost half of the entire san francisco fire department. it is an apartment under construction in a new residential area of mission bay with few people living here. the construction workers had gone home by 4:00, one hour before the 9-1-1 call came in. >> whatever was burning had an

hour to smolder. when we got on scene there were no visible flames was the initial report. and then we saw smoke and then it took off. >> firefighters won't know what caused it or where it started until this scene cools down and inspectors can come in. this fire was so intense they had to put up what they call a water curtainthe radiantsprayint to keep it from igniting the buildings and cracking thewindot windows across the street. tonight they are allowing some evacuees into the buildings to retrieve personal belongings. no one will be spending the night in the apartments directly across from where the fire was. live in san francisco, alan wang, abc7 news. >> certainly a major inconvenience for them. >> the flames tore through the building. we want to show you the veer ross tee of the fire. these images were taken at 5:45 at the worst of it and video taken an hour and a half

later. the fire crews made quick work of the flames, but there was no stoping the destruction. it could not be stopped. viewers are sending spectacular video. this is from adam f. thank you, adam. >> smoke could be seen all the way in the north bay. this view from san rafael and you can see the smoke in the dance. in the distance. you could see the plume of smoke in the city's skyline. and preschoolers looked on as the fire rages on the other side of the window. e-mail your photos and videos to you report at kgo-tv.com. now, at the height of the fire, flaming debris was literally raining down on the entire area. leslie brinkley is live with what witnesses saw and experienced tonight. leslie? >> here on the ucsf campus there is a strong smell of smoke tonight.

you can see the winds whipping around and there is plenty of the charred debris blowing around on the street that just rained down on the sidewalks here. that's why they had to evacuate several buildings. >> several buildings were evacuated as flaming debris blew in from the inferno just two blocks up the street. >> i can see all of the embers on the street. >> that's why we went inside. it started raining ash and choppings of fire. chunks of fire. we can see the research center from our building. i saw that the balcony started smoking. >> a fire ignited in a rooftop garden area on the cardiovascular research area. the ucsf engineer saved the day. >> the grass was burning and the officer and myself grabbed the signatures and put the fire out. >> it had to be frightening to

have another fire starting and you think you have to get people out. >> i was doing my job. >> when you look out the window there was a little ledge on the window. you can see the little fire embers landing on top. they had a little fire in them. >> so raining fire. >> pretty much. >> ash covered cars and sidewalks. they snapped the cell phone photos as they waited to get back in and grab the belongings. back. -- computer back. two were reopened, but the one behind me, that one remains closed and will remain open in the morning. leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> leslie, thank you. the winds were calm a when the fire was really raging.

here is a live look from our roof camera and you can see that the flags are moving with the wind. meteorologist sandhya patel is on the roof of the kgo broadcast center. >> it is getting pretty windy. the flags are going and the winds are gusting about 24 miles an hour. at the higher elevations we are seeing the stronger winds. oakland hills are gusting to 53 miles an hour, 37 hawk eye. hang on tight. near the fire right now, this is what we are looking at. 65 degrees also getting gusty to about 10 miles an hour. of course i am hoping that the firefighters don't have to deal with embers that are tossed around and reigniting the fire there. let's keep our fingers crossed. wind advisory is up for most of the bay area until tomorrow morning. gusts 45 to 50 miles an hour

could knockdown trees. here is a time lapse from our camera of the smoke plume that can be seen for miles. as you look at the satellite imagery you can see how intense the fire was in san francisco's a mission bay and showing up as a hotspot. if you didn't hear the wind howling in the microphone right now, my hair tells the story. i will be back with a look at the forecast that will include very warm weather as we hit the weekend. carolyn, dan? >> thank you. the massive fireread to theot spread to the surrounding buildings, but it did cause major problems including apa apartment complex. a hundreds are not being allowed back in their homes. wayne freedman is live with that part of the story for us. >> the number we are getting is as many as 300 people are not being allowed back in the apartment complex. it was directly across the street from the fire here in the downtown section and around mission bay.

the streets were filled tonight with people who have no place to go. >> when your neighborhood is an inferno it happens without much warning and then it comes tumbling down like this. in san francisco's mission bay it is -- hundreds and thousands of people were >> the doors had been all opened because they went in to rescue the animals they were able to find. and so it is a little bit of a mess in there. >> a mess with collateral damage mostly in the form of gross inconvenience thank goodness. >> dinner was away from home tonight in a restaurant with his roommate and with a dog on the leash. the three lived directly across from the fire. >> it has been so windy.

it is probably windy at your house. in berkeley a come thousand people are without power after a tree came crashing down. here it is live from our sue trough camera. we will show you that picture in a moment if we can. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is live in berkeley with the story. lisa? >> dan, heavy winds in berkeley. it was strong enough to knockdown part of the tree. you can see behind me on pan or ram mick way it happened an hour and a half ago and it has been block the road since. this is not the only problem in the area. more than 2,000 customers are without power and in berkeley in parts of el cerrito and retch moneyed, they are -- and richmond they are working to restore the power. according to the national weather service in the berkeley hills. the wind gusts have been as strong as 59 miles an hour and it is only expected to get worse. lyanne lyannelisa amin gulezian, back

news. the massive building fire in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood. you are looking live from sky 7hd. you can see the fire is not out yet. the rubble there is steel smoldering. is still smoldering. >> look how huge the fire was at 5:30 this afternoon. part of the building ultimately collapsed. most of it did at the end of us chief told us minutes ago one firefighter suffered minor burns from the radiant heat. and there were construction workers inside when the fire broke out. the fire department did get them out safely. the structure that caught fire was going to be a 360-unit apartment complex. the fire crews are going to remain there all night on scene to make sure there were no flare ups especially with the wind picking up. >> more now on that apartment building. half of the 360 units burned today. the entire project cost a quarter of a billion dollars. construction began and it was

expected to be completed in the complex was being built by a company called bre. representatives for breunavailar unavailable for comment tonight. today's fire is certainly reminiscent of the santana row fire in 2002. remember that? the fire destroyed a number of yet to be opened shops that were under construction. wind and flying embers were a big problem. they ignited rooftops half a mile away destroying 30 apartments and homes. all of that fire caused $100 million in damage. >> a san jose police officer is out on bail tonight facing a rape charge. officer jeffrey graves is accused of attacking a woman. he has been on on administrative leave. she wanted to go to a hotel and police took her there. she claims graves later returned to that hotel and raped her. san jose's police chief says it is an isolated incident and

actually went up at 11:00 p.m. that's because of the offshore flow. it is a down sloping wind, so very warm. 63 oakland and 62 redwood city and half moon bay is 64 degrees. giving you a shaky view of the city by the bay. 58 in santa rosa. it is currently 63 in napa. temperatures dropped in the 50s and livermore 63 degrees. from our emeryville camera, it is clear. it is gusty and looking at further warming 80s with the 80s showing up. a look at the satellite and the radar giving you a glimpse of what has been providing us with the warmth today. the warmer weather ahead with the winds. it is a strong ridge of high pressure. we are basically looking at the offshore breeze with a warming trend. the temperatures will go up even more. in case are you wondering, when will i use my umbrella? it is winter. we do see signs of rain around march 20th, 21st.
