good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm john muller. >> and i'm marci gonzalez. the mystery of flight 370 is now well into its fifth day with still no sign of the plane, passengers or crew. new video this morning shows japanese soldiers preparing to join the multicountry search crew. they will join the international effort to find the missing plane today as the flight's potential path is causing more confusion. abc's tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: the mystery deepens. authorities now say the malaysian airlines jet veered far off course after turning off its transponder tracking signal. >> it would certainly appear that either the flight crew or there's someone else in the cockpit that is making some decisions that don't really compute. >> reporter: the malaysian military says flight 370 banked hard to the left and then flew for an hour over hundreds of miles of land, never sounding an alarm and cruising into the

strait of malacca, a busy shipping lane, near a tiny rocky island called pulau perak. no one reported a plane down. authorities again searched land and a new stretch of ocean, but still no sign of the missing plane. criticism of the investigation is mounting. >> it's haphazard. it's scatter shot. >> reporter: this morning new questions about the cockpit crew. the airline say it' investigating the co-pilot, 27-year-old fariq abdul hamid for possible violations of safety standards. according to an australian news report, these two young women were invited by hamid to ride with him in the cockpit during a 2011 flight. >> i once sensed they were pretty much turned around in their seats talking to us and so engaged in conversation. >> reporter: investigators searched the homes of both the co-pilot and the captain, 53-year-old zaharie ahmad shah seen in this youtube video, but so far there's nothing about the background of the two men that suggests foul play.

the head of the cia says the agency has not heard any chatter suggesting terrorism, but the u.s. is still not ruling it out. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> thanks, tahman. and abc's gloria riviera is at a military base in kuala lumpur this morning where she spoke to the chief of malaysia's air force who is leading the search for the missing plane. >> he insists he's been misquoted about a change of direction the jetliner may have taken, and when gloria asked him why after five days there's still no radar data or even a time line, his response was a firm "no comment." stay with abc news for all the new developments on the mystery of flight 370. we have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." well, new this morning, what one passenger is calling the miracle on us airways flight 678. it left tampa bound for phoenix but was forced to make an emergency landing in houston. that's because a baby on board had stopped breathing. two passengers with medical training saved the child. >> ran up, the baby and had the baby held in his hand upside down. the baby was purple. >> there are people that

assisted, and they were told there would be an emergency landing, and everything went very smoothly. everybody was just invested in -- and when we heard the baby cry, it was just -- it was a teary moment for everybody. >> all right. wonderful. the flight continued to phoenix where it landed just an hour late. an apartment building under construction in san francisco is not much more than a pile of smoldering scrap iron this morning. the fire broke out at around 5:00 last evening, and within minutes, dense, black smoke shot into the air. flames ate through the structure quickly producing waves of blistering heat. >> i was standing pretty close, and the heat was intense. the fire was just insane, how big it got, and i was really worried was it going to spread to these buildings and also this building over here. >> more than 150 firefighters and 90 trucks will be battling this fire until daybreak at least, but the chief says they are getting it under control. amazingly, only one firefighter

suffered minor injuries. it will be a day of weather extremes for millions of us in the west. there are flooding concerns. the melting snow pushing waterways in montana and wyoming beyond their limits making roads impassable and isolating hundreds of people. some towns still evacuated. other residents taking precautions to prevent flooding. in the eastern part of the country, the taste of spring is now ending. it is time to put away those skateboards and retrieve the coats and gloves because winter is going to make a comeback. we're going to get the very latest now from accuweather's jim dickey. >> good morning, john and marci. tracking a powerful winter storm here this morning. it's moving its way out of the midwest tracking across the ohio valley and will strengthen through the day, move its way to the eastern seaboard. the heaviest of the snow, that will stretch from the cleveland area and north and eastward into new england. overnight this really gets going. we could be talking about blizzard conditions in the state of maine. and at times by the time it's

said and done, feets of snow in new england. behind this set of fresh arctic air, our spring preview is over. many spots 20 to 30 degrees colder than tuesday. meanwhile, santa ana winds ramping up in southern california as high pressure has built into the salt lake city area and the north and east, gusts up to 60 miles per hour. that could cause power outages and high fire danger. john and marci, back to you. >> thanks, jim. an experienced skier has died in an avalanche in montana. investigators say the 27-year-old was skiing in the back country when he was buried by the snow. he died before other skiers could dig him out. he is the fourth skier to die in an avalanche in the area in less than three months. experts say there is more danger right now because of heavy, wet snow and rain. well, in florida the gop is the victor in a bellwether special election. voters elected david jolly despite the democratic candidate alex sink being better known and better funded and supported by the party's biggest names. it was the first midterm election of 2014. it was seen as a test of each party's message. one of those top campaign

issues, of course, obamacare. a new tally shows the number of enrollments is going up slowly, 4.2 million people have purchased health care since the program launched in october. 943,000 last month and 1.1 million in january. but with the march 31st deadline nearing, the affordable care program is unlikely to reach its original goal of 7 million enrollees. president obama welcomes the ukrainian prime minister to the white house today. his visit comes as armed russian militia in plain clothes have taken control of the main airport in crimea. that's the part of ukraine that will vote on sunday on whether to become part of russia. president obama is considering economic sanctions against moscow for its military advances in crimea. and the cia is denying accusations that it spied on senate investigators who were looking into the agency's enhanced interrogation techniques. senator dianne feinstein took to the senate floor yesterday to express her concerns about the cia interfering with a year's long investigation into post-9/11 agency activities. that investigation produced a controversial report that is

still unreleased. feinstein claimed the cia removed documents that senate investigators were supposed to have access to. cia director john brennan says nothing like that happened. president obama managed to escape washington politics for a day for a fund-raising visit to new york city, and he made sure that he went home with some presents in hand. >> he did. the president stopped by a gap store where he picked up a few things for the ladies in his life. but he also worked in a little support for raising the minimum wage praising the chain's voluntary decision to increase wages. all right. well, there's a big stink over parmesan cheese. why some of your favorite cheeses could be changing names. plus, photoshop fail. a major retailer is apologizing for this image on its website. so can you spot the problem? and a tiny pill with big results is helping people lose weight so fast, they're going to another country to get it.

welcome back. the justice department is the latest to investigate gm's handling of a known defect. the automaker knew for years that the ignition switches on some compact cars could suddenly turn off the motors and the air bags. it only issued a recall last month. repairs won't begin until next month. 13 deaths and 31 accidents are blamed on the defect. cvs is the target of an investigation over missing pain pills. pharmacists at four california branches are alleged to have lost track of some 37,000 hydrocodone tablets. cvs could be charged $29 million

on highways in the upper midwest before moving into the northeast. highways will also be wet across the southeast. now, if you're flying, airport delays possible in chicago, detroit, atlanta, charlotte, washington, philadelphia, new york and boston. back to the news now, since being hit by a devastating data breach, target has been trying to restore its reputation. but now the retailer is facing a new embarrassment. an epic photoshopping failure. take a look. in an effort to slim down a junior bathing suit model the editor cropped out chunks around her thigh area but clearly didn't finish the job. the unfinished nature of the photo flop is bad enough, but it also triggered outrage over the bad message it sends about body image. target has issued a statement saying, "this was an unfortunate error on our part, and we apologize. we have removed the image from our website." all right, one of the most promising weight loss devices is made in san diego, but americans have to travel to mexico to get

say they would be willing to buy one. nine children taken to a hospital after a chemical leak at a swim center in suburban houston. more than 40 people were evacuated. it appears the chlorine system malfunctioned sending up a cloud of gas that triggered coughing, nausea and watery eyes. no one was seriously injured, by the children were taken to the hospital as a precaution. also in houston pastor joel osteen's megachurch suffering a megatheft. lakewood church officials say that nearly $600,000 in cash, checks and credit card donations disappeared from the safe. they sent an e-mail to members advising them to monitor their accounts for any suspicious activities. more than 43,000 people attend services at lakewood each week. some amazing video here caught on surveillance cameras at a barbershop in texas. several people were inside when a white suv barreled through the front window. just one customer's leg was hurt. now, the woman behind the wheel said she lost control when she swerved to avoid another vehicle. she and her two small children

in the vehicle were not hurt. a mountain lion has been caught on camera prowling around the hollywood hills casually strolling between parked cars in a neighborhood not far from griffith park. live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> develop news in san francisco where streets in the mission bay area remain closed and firefighters are still putting water on a high-rise building under construction. a huge fire broke out forcing evacuation of homes. this morning, there are winds to worry about. meteorologist, mike nicco, gets us started. in that area right now, the temperatures have cooled off. look at humidity: bone dry at only 22 percent of the winds from the northeast at nine and gusting to ten miles per hour. 65 degrees so far this morning. the advisory continues not 8:00 with gusts up to 60 miles per hour in the east bay hills so 45

to 50 through 8:00. here is a picture from the east bay hills with the camera bouncing. above-average temperatures and near 70 at the coast and low-to-mid 70's for the rest of us. there are not going to be delays with bart. but in san mateo southbound 280 at high 92 that is where we have a car that hit a deer with a lane blocked. the gusts are affecting the benicia bridge where c.h.p. issued a high wind advisory and cartinez is lookingear. i-80 is clear westbound through berkeley. back to the top story. the san francisco firefighters are still putting water on what is left of the inferno at a high-rise under construction at

the giants ballpark near mission bay. you can see how massive the flame were at the height yesterday evening. katie marzullo is on scene. i can speak to the winds mike was talking about and they are gusting. right now firefighters are very much working on the building and you can see down the road there were three ladder trucks in place. they are down to two but they are still blasting water on the building trying to soak it down and keep the embers from flying. if you look at the video, a gas truck had to drive around and refuel the diesel because some are in such precarious spots and they are not moving. the fire was reported 5:00 last night. the building is under construction.
