live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. the investigation begins today to uncover what sparked this raging inferno at a massive apartment complex under construction in san francisco. >> firefighters spent night on the mission bay side looking for hotspots like this, that kicked up in the wind. thanks for joining us. we will give you a side-by-side video showing the fire at the height last night. that is on the left. versus a stark contrast from the charred structure this morning on the right. >> we are over the scene and you can see they are still pouring water on a number of places

because the wind kicked up and there are a lot of smoldering hotspots. katie marzullo kicks off team coverage. >> we can see that from our angle on the background and there are 50 firefighters, five ladder trucks on the scene and the ladder trucks are doubting the fire from every angle with water hoses and the firefight could last into tonight. they are not taking any chances with hotspots and the wind we have seen. the fire chief said the collapse is not a possibility but a probability. >> the fire is under control but not contained. the danger is far from over. >> it will likely collapse. given the amount of fire damage and water being applied, it weakens the structure. >> massive fire erupted at 5:00 with flaming racing through the apartment building under construction. >> this is the biggest volume fire i have seen, just the size

of it. >> investigators have not been inside the structure the fire chief says that they are already looking at a possible cause. >> there was torch work being done, welding work being done and they got off around 3:30 or 4:00 so that is something we are looking at. it is preliminary. >> there were a few workers on site when the fire broke out but it is not clear if they were welding. san francisco mayor came to see the damage this morning and he says as bad as it is it could have been worse. >> this is part of mission bay. we focused on building an infrastructure and part of the infrastructure was the auxiliary high pressure water system. >> chief agrees the water supply made a difference but it was a hard fought victory and a firefighter was hurt. >> he was on the ladder and sustained some buns and i saw him continuing to battle the fire and not until later, then, he indicated that he had some minor injuries.

>> that firefighter and the chief would hurt her ankle dug the overnight watch have been treated and are back home. >> the chief says when they are done spray the water on the fire and there is no estimate when that could happen, she says that is when the structural engineers will talk about dismantling whatever is left of the structure. the massive fire affected a last people living and working in the area and they are trying to move failure. matt keller joins us from san francisco with more. matt? >> 25 percent of the 147 units at the venue apartments are rented and it was evacuated during the fire. people are waiting to see when they can come back home for good. >> the water came after the flames were controlled from the sprinklers and the firemen. 350-400 people live in the

nearby apartments and they were evacuated last night. some apartments are uninhabitable. firefighters are concerned about a collapse with a couple of residents came back to see how their homes were doing. >> i am relieved there is not much damage to our apartment. it looks the inside just has minor water damage and smoke the hallways so i am not too worried. >> it wasn't just the water but the heat that damaged cars, parking meters and windows. the property manager says all residents are required to have rental insurance which includes money for hotels. >> very thankful. all the resolution tenths of safe. their pets are safe. that is our main focus. >> the salvation army jumped in right away with emergency workers. >> we served how meals

>> there was no timetable when the units, especially the ones here on the west side, would be ready for the residents. more now of the building destroyed in the fire, a real estate development company called b.r.e. properties was building the complex called mb160 and were to run $630,000 each when finished this year. the company has insurance and believes the lawsuit will be covered. >> b.r.e. said and i quote, "thankfully the project was safely evacuated and sorries and contractors have been accounted for. we extend our thanks and

gratitude to the fire and emergency services personnel for their rapid response." these artist renderings from the company showed what mb350 would look like when done. the community was being praised for the easy access to the ballpark, restaurants, retail and mass transit, and estimate cost of the project was a quarter billion dollars. we were fortunate that the wind did not kick up million this morning so hours after the fire at the peak, ors massive fire could have been worth. mike nicco will have the latest conditions and a time-lapse look >> we hit 20 and i have been here 10 or 15 minutes holding this up and down the road at the ferry building they had gusts up to 32 miles per hour so breezy in san francisco and this is how it looks from space, yesterday, satellite showing the hotspot

right over san francisco. can you imagine how warm the fire was bunking to show up like that on the satellite. now, the current conditions at 62, humidity is bone dry, and i woulds are from the east at 13 but gusting to 28 so we still have issues with that through the daylight hours and our winds will not decouple until the sunsets so we will have 20 to 30-miles-per-hour gusts across the expire area throughout the afternoon hours. that is below the threshold for the wind advisory with gusts up to 59 miles per hour in the east bay and 49 at half moon bay the fastest we had. in you can see the time-lapse from mount tamalpais yesterday of the smoke quality issues. warm weather is coming up.

at least two dozen injured. >> the mayor called the explosion "a tragedy of worst kind." he says it was caused by a gas leak. the reporter is at the scene with the latest. >> right new we are a block west of where this building collapsed. this is looking east to park avenue, those are members of the firefighter out here all morning. there is a heavy smoke condition and now, hours after the collapse, they are dumping water on to the building. we have seen windows shattered. this is a church. we are a block from the building. this is a church at mount zion. the windows are shattered and the store fronts have been shattered and glass all over the sidewalk here. we have witnessed a courtyard behind this and there is a playground that is covered in shattered glass, screens blown out of windows and, also, the

explosion at shackle. >> santa cruz police arrested an 18-year-old accuses of sexually assaulting a woman on the screen corner. on thursday, the man grabbed and fondled a 20-year-old woman at corner of bay and seaside while she was talking on her cell phone. the victim was able to fight off her attacker and gave police the details to make this sketch. a probation officer identified that suspect and say he confessed to the attack and two others last april. he currently is held on multiple charges. >> the high stakes chase that started with a carjacking and endangered the life of a little boy in the process as well as the lives of other drivers who encountered the situation.

. in colorado a wild case involving a carjacking system. want the red s.u.v. as the driver gets out and carjacks this other van. police say the suspect was running from police after he stole the red s.u.v. at a gas station with a little boy inside. the boy is fine. the woman driving this van ran out, the suspect takes off going

the wrong way and this went on for two hours and kept going on before ramming a third car and pulling that driver out and took that vehicle. he crashed but was not ready to give up and he ran for police. officers arrested him after he tried to jump a fence and failed. >> my goodness. incredible video. i am glad everything is okay. at least, physically. we have new details on the search for missing malaysian jetliner, with the last message sent by a pilot on plight 370 before it vanished was all right, good night. authorities say that message suggests everything was normal. the jetliner vanished five days ago with 239 people on board and 12 nations are involved in the search if the missing jetliner with 42 ships and 39 aircraft searching 27,000 were nautical

miles. the consumer products safety commission will issued a recall for high-tech activity tracking wristband because of an issue reported by "7 on your side" saying that 9,900 people using this have reported skin irritation. another 250 people suffered blistering. the company believes it is allergic reaction to the casing or the material use in the strap or the assembling of 9 product and announced a refund program last month. they have issued an official recall involving a million of the devices. consumers should contact for a full refund with more details on abc7news.com. this morning, target is apologizing for what it called unfortunate error after going a little too far with photoshop in an ad for game -- girl's baby suits but photoshop showed young
