and after. we're live at the scene. after 11 straight victories, the "jeopardy" mastermind who made waves with polarizing strategies finally stumped and off the show, but he's here live. ♪ >> good morning, america. and good morning, america. robin off today. this malaysian flight mystery continues to deepen. most of us went to bed with these images in mind right here. that's a satellite photo from china said to be debris from the flight. the malaysian officials say this morning there is nothing there at all. now, a new theory emerging overnight about where the plane could be. possibility that it could have flown for hours, several hours. officials now knocking that down, too. every lead that comes up seems to evaporate. >> so many theories.

and now u.s. investigators are on the scene. they're focussing on those missing nine minutes after the transponder was turned off but the plane kept on flying. >> so let's get right to it. officials wrapped up the latest press conference a short time ago. and abc's bob woodruff is on the scene in kuala lumpur again right now. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, george. there have been so many theories about this story. today a very interesting one came out. a report maybe there was data shared indicating that the engines were still operating for four hours more than when it disappeared. in fact, it may even flew 2,000 miles away, but that story today, the malaysian officials absolutely deny it. this morning malaysian officials knocked down reports that malaysia air flight 370 could have flown for more than four hours after it vanished from the radar insisting the last it heard from the plane was a transmission at 1:07 this morning just before it disappeared. >> those reports are inaccurate. >> reporter: not only that but the one seeming glimmer of hope dashed overnight. these three chinese satellite

images, which appear to show large pieces of floating debris, just 140 miles east from where the plane disappeared, and about 240 miles from where an oil rig worker said he saw a plane on fire in the sky, no debris was found in either place. >> we deployed our assets but found nothing. we have contacted the chinese embassy who notified us this afternoon that images were released by mistake and did not show any debris from mh370. >> reporter: officials say their focus remains the south china sea. no word if they'll expand it which covers an area of 27,000 nautical square miles, the size of indiana and spanning a distance greater than chicago to atlanta. all of this highlighting how difficult this search is. for abc news, gloria riviera this morning joined a search party desperate for any clue. >> we just banked hard right. i thought the wind would touch the ocean surface because the captain wanted to check out

something they saw. it was that big. turned out to be a fisherman's box. >> reporter: those search and rescue teams are saying not only are they just looking for debris, they also have this great hope that maybe hopefully they'll be able to find some of those people still alive. george? >> much more work to be done. >> indeed. all right. as bhengsed, there are new questions about flight 370's final moments in those key nine minutes of no communication, but the plane still showing up on the radar. abc's david kerley is live in washington with the latest on this, good morning to you, david. >> reporter: lara, we learned this morning that u.s. aviation investigators have now seen all the radar data the malaysians have. but there's still this mystery that led to a discussion of possible theories because of these missing nine minutes. something happened to this 777's ability to report to the ground. was that because of a massive electrical failure? was the crew incapacitated because of a lack of oxygen or did the crew actually turn off the equipment? all questions raised by the missing nine minutes.

we know the plane took off from kuala lumpur at 12:41 a.m. 40 minutes later, the 777's jet liner's transponder, its signaling device sent its last bit of information, location and altitude of 35,000 feet. then the transponder goes silent but for another nine minutes, radar continues to see the plane moving until 1:30 a.m. when it disappears. the malaysian military says 45 minutes later, its radar tapes show something way over here on the other side of the malaysian peninsula. but they admit they have no idea what it is. as the general said it's very difficult for us to say for sure that it is the aircraft. among the u.s. investigators, part of the team from the ntsb, the faa and boeing is a radar expert who got a first look at that radar data. there have been plenty of questions about the split search on both sides of the malaysian peninsula. the malaysians say today they were told by the u.s. investigators who now looked at

this radar data that were grounds to search on both sides, including the malacca straits, george. >> okay, david. let's analyze this all with our aviation consultant, stephen ganyard. bottom line six days in, no progress. >> no progress, george. we know absolutely nothing since 49 minutes after the aircraft took off. everything else is a guess, it's supposition. they're false leads. >> our reporter raising the question, what if it didn't crash? how serious do you take that possibility? this plane could have flown for hours and actually landed somewhere safely. >> it's possible. at this point anything is possible. we have to continue to look at anything. so we know that it was going to go to beijing. we know it had at least seven hours of fuel on board. took a string on a map and went to beijing and drew that arc out there, that's where that airplane could be. seven hours, it could be in somalia, in yemen, it could be in india. >> and it would be able to land undetected? >> it's possible. remember that part of the world is very remote. there's not radars in every place. we know the radar transponder

which threw out all this data was turned off or perhaps electrical failure but no longer any data coming from this airplane. >> you have to take hijacking seriously. what's the single most important thing for investigators to do right now? >> right now we need to get facts. and i think the most encouraging thing that we heard today was that the faa and the ntsb are finally being brought into the investigation. we finally have professionals involved in this mishap investigation and they did not dissuade the malaysians from thinking that perhaps that airplane did take that turn west. >> what can they do that the malaysians can't? >> they're true professionals they'll be able to analyze in scientific ways that the malaysians don't have the capability of doing. they've done so many investigates that they can look at, bring in and new capabilities and new techniques. the air france 447, they brought in new technologies there, a search pattern, all sorts of science that can be applied here that has yet to be applied. >> you've been doing this a long time. have you ever seen a mystery like this? >> this is baffling. five days in and i can tell you

if we were having a drink in a bar i could not give you an idea what had might have happened. everything is on the table at this point. >> thanks very much. to josh -- we're going to go to lara right now. >> thank you so much, george. we want to bring you breaking news on the fatal crash overnight at south by southwest, it's a festival in austin, texas, a man and a woman killed. 23 others injured when a suspected drunk driver fleeing arrest crashed through barricades and abc's john muller has the latest. john, this is so senseless. >> senseless, tragic, it was horrible. the carnage was over in less than a minute. the alleged drunk driver plowing the wrong way down a one-way street filled with people leaving a concert. a man and a woman killed instantly. and this morning, some of those critically injured are still fighting for their lives. >> just came straight through the crowd. people went everywhere. it was really, really terrible. >> i know i saw at least a dozen people lying injured in the street. >> unfortunate. very sad. >> reporter: this morning, the normally bustling south by southwest scene in downtown

austin turned deadly when a suspected drunk driver fleeing cops crashed through the barricades into a crowd of people killing two, injuring at least 23 others. five of them critically. >> people went up in the air. the guy nearest to me went sort of face down into the ground and people gathered around him very quickly and he was clearly hurt and he was bleeding on his face. >> reporter: according to police, a man in a small toyota evaded a police stop at a nearby gas station. then drove the wrong way down the street. plowing through the barricade hitting pedestrians striking a taxi, a van and then attempted to run from the scene. but police caught up to him and shocked him with a stun gun. >> he was the sole male occupant driver. and he has been taken into custody and he will be charged. we will direct file. >> reporter: the aftermath, painful. victims laying on the street, some receiving cpr from strangers who rushed to their aid.

police have not released the name of the driver but say they will charge him with capital murder. and it could have been even worse, the street was packed full of concertgoers just a few minutes earlier. officials had managed to thin out that foot traffic that was actually in the street because it was a fire lane. george? >> that festival is so packed, as you said. could have been so much worse. thank you, john. >> thank you, guys. we turn now to the latest on that horrific explosion that took down two apartment buildings here in manhattan. rescuers combing through the rubble found more bodies overnight. the death toll at least seven. more than 60 injured. and abc's ryan smith is on the scene. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. as you can see over my shoulder the scene still very much active in east harlem. smoke continuing to billow from the buildings as crews pouring water clearing massive amounts of debris from the scene in hopes of finding those still missing. this morning, dozens of manhattan residents are waking up without a home. a devastating explosion leveling these two five-story buildings on wednesday.

>> get back. get back. >> reporter: killing at least seven, including a public safety officer and a dental hygienist and injuring 64 people, among them, two fbi agents. >> we have two five-story buildings totally collapse. >> reporter: dozens remain in hospitals or shelters while a handful are still missing. >> there will be a thorough search to try to find or locate each individual. >> reporter: residents say they remember smelling what they call unbearable gas tuesday night. alerting energy company con edison the next morning, 9:13 a.m. 15 minutes later, the large blast erupted. >> oh, oh. get off the sidewalk. >> pulling people out of the [ bleep ] building. >> reporter: the wall started coming down. i was so scared. i didn't know what to do. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: two construction workers running to the scene to help. rescuing a young boy from the rubble. >> he was just saying help. we just grabbed him and brought him down to the cops and we just ran back. >> reporter: the blast so

strong, flying debris held up the commuter train service for hours. overnight, the red cross setting up in this nearby elementary school. helping the displaced with food, emotional support and finding a place to stay. >> no one thinks disaster will happen to them and when it does, there is a sense of shock. >> reporter: while heavy equipment trucks move in to clear debris, many residents left wondering when, if ever, they can go home. and search efforts remain all the more difficult last night by whipping wind, dropping temperatures, even a sinkhole that opened up right in front of the building temporarily. that halted efforts for just a little bit of time last night but as of now, speaking of the displaced, the red cross just telling us that at least 60 residents are being housed in a temporary shelter nearby. george. >> okay, ryan, thanks. what a scary day it was here in new york. now to josh. >> all right, george. we begin here with some dramatic new video overnight. a tanker truck carrying gasoline crashed and exploded on a busy highway in newark, new jersey.

police say the driver may have been cut off by another vehicle just before the crash. you can see it shut down the highway. even disrupted, in fact, nearby amtrak and commuter rail service. no word yet on the extent of the driver's injuries. also new information overnight about that massive recall by general motors which is now the subject of a federal criminal investigation. gm has revealed it may have known about faulty ignition switches in compact cars as far back as 2001. that's three years earlier than first thought. those faulty switches are blamed now for causing crashes that killed at least 12 people. and a new push this morning to change the prison sentences handed down to drug offenders. today attorney general eric holder will endorse a plan to shorten sentences for most low-level drug offenders by an average of 11 months. holder says it will reduce prison overcrowding and create a more fair justice system. some 70% of drug traffickers would be affected by the new guidelines. some tough questions are expected on capitol hill today

as lawmakers investigate the rising number of severe head injuries in professional and especially youth sports from soccer to professional football. the nfl is sending a top executive to answer questions today. the commissioner of the nhl will also attend the hearing. speaking of hard hits, take a look at this. a sky driver in florida admits he is lucky to be alive after wind blew him into those power lines. he somehow cut his way out of his gear, dropped to the ground. walked away with just minor burns inspiring the question once again why jump out of a perfectly good airplane. >> agreed. also this morning amazon is being sued accused of cheating customers on free shipping. at issue the company's prime membership program that provides free two-day shipping. now two lawsuits claim that amazon inflated prices to cover the cost of that shipping so it wasn't really free in the end. amazon has yet to respond to the claims. and finally, and of great interest to my producer.

>> now we will be pouring it back and forth in bars. >> no, we won't. >> thank you, josh. so many questions about this next story. a new investigation into the popular health company herbalife. the company announced it is under investigation by the federal trade commission. in the aftermath of one hedge fund investor calling it a pyramid scheme and abc's rebecca jarvis is here to explain it all. rebecca. >> reporter: hi, lara. there are billions of dollars at stake here. a lot of ego. investors bet huge amounts of money on the success and failure of herbalife and now this morning after over a year of bitter public battles between top wall street titans, regulators are investigating herbalife. questioning how the nutrition company runs its business. herbalife known to many for its total control weight loss supplements making headlines this morning after announcing it's under investigation by the federal trade commission. >> is the company operating as a pyramid scheme and making more money through recruitment or selling the product legitimately.

>> reporter: it markets various energy snack, vitamin supplements and skin care products made $4.8 billion in sales last year with 3 million distributors in more than 90 countries. now it's up to investigators to determine whether any of that was earned through unfair or deceptive acts or practices. herbalife says it welcomes the inquiry and is confident that herbalife is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. but not everyone agrees. a hot topic for epic billionaire battles on cable news between hedge fund titans bill ackman and carl icahn. >> let's move on. >> ackman calling herbalife a pyramid scheme and lobbying regulators and members of congress to investigate and placing a $1 billion short sale bet that herbalife's stock will drop and the company will fail. and drop, it did, after news of the investigation hit wall street. shares of herbalife stock

plunging yesterday after the stock was briefly halted at one point down as much as 16%. they ended lower by more than 7%. so what happens next? you can bet the stock will be volatile. experts say the investigation could last as long as a year and typically in cases like this if the ftc finds anything wrong at the company, it recovers money that was lost by the affected consumers, lara. >> all right. rebecca. thank you. we want to get right to ginger zee for the latest on the weather. ginger. >> the cleveland, ohio, area is where i wanted to start. it represents so many people and what we went through the last couple of days. this is just 24 hours. so you're in the 50s. and drop 50 degrees. actually 60s here in cleveland. it's snowing and also this is what happened on the ohio turnpike. at least three dead. just huge accidents both sides closed for really hours yesterday. it was a complete mess and this is still going on. i want to bring you now to maine, farmington, maine, it is north of portland and seeing some of that blowing snow so it's not just the snow,

don't worry. >> we've got to come back later. thank you, ginger. right now the latest from the oscar pistorius trial. another gruesome day in the courtroom and abc's matt gutman is on the scene in pretoria, south africa. good morning, matt. >> reporter: that's right. for the first time in court we saw those gut-churning crime scene photos. from where i was sitting a few benches behind oscar pistorius i saw him writhing in his seat then when pictures of his girlfriend's bloody face flashed by on a screen a few feet from his face he became physically ill. this morning for the first time those grisly crime scene photos. his blood smeared prosthetic legs and blood pooled on the bathroom floor where he shot his lover saying he shoot she was an intruder facing murder charges for killing reeva steenkamp, and covering his eyes when the pictures were shown. when a picture of steenkamp's

bloody face passed by he started heaving and covering his face with those papers. a mock-up still in court. pistorius says he smashed through that door with a cricket bat once he realized his mistake. and that bat so closely scrutinized that even the judge wanted a closer look. on wednesday a prosecution witness dropped what seemed a bombshell. >> marks on the door is actually consistent with him not having his legs on and i suspect similar to the location he was when he fired the shot. >> seeming to have caught pistorius in a bold lie. but the defense put the police colonel under a witt othering assault. >> he must have had his legs on when he used the cricket bat. >> that's your version. >> that's your version. >> my findings. >> would that follow? >> no. >> reporter: alleged key evidence including that door was mishandled. at times pistorius passed notes to his lawyer and craned his neck to see that door.

that's the door that the prosecution presented today in which oscar pistorius used that cricket bat to smash through it. but if you look closely you can see the four bullet holes. teen camp was hit by three of those four bullets. pathologists say the 29-year-old model died nearly instantly. the only person that knows exactly what happened that night is in the courtroom oscar pistorius. we're told he will testify in the trial. it's very likely he will be the first defense witness called. sources tell us they want him to set the tone for the rest of the trial. george. >> okay, matt gutman, thanks. let's talk to dan abrams right now about this. we heard from matt likely to testify. but oscar pistorius, is he in any shape to testify? >> he better be. when you're talking about a defense that focuses not on did he do it, but why did he do it? what was going on in his head? he becomes an absolutely critical witness and the devil is going to be in the details. remember, he's already provided an account in connection with

his bail application of what he says happened. so he's got to stay consistent with that. my point being this is not going to be easy testimony for him and as a result he better be ready. >> he's barely able to hold it together in the courtroom. some suggest he may have some posttraumatic stress syndrome. >> his lawyers are certainly going to take him through everything. they'll take him through a mock direct examination, cross-examination, make sure he's ready but to some degree they don't have a choice in a case like this. yes, they could present -- leave the case to the judge. he doesn't have to testify. but because of the facts, because of the type of defense you're talking about here, they've got to figure out a way to get him in shape to testify. >> is the decision affected by the fact it is a judge, not a jury? >> it could be. i don't know that in this case it makes that much of a difference because of the defense but judge versus jury definitely will impact almost every decision being made by the defense and prosecution. but i think in this case they have to. >> so far has the defense made

any headway. >> the best thick they've gotten the fact his ex-girlfriend testified he was often concerned about possibly intruders, that he would jump up sometimes worried that someone was coming into the house. that's exactly what he is saying happened here. so having someone who is now testified, this is the type of behavior he's exhibited before. i think it's very helpful to him. i think this whole attack on the police is helpful to them, but isn't going to make or break the case. >> okay, dan abrams, thanks very much. george, let's get to the carjacking and high-speed chase in colorado. a denver area mom horrified as a man races off in her suv with her 4-year-old son in the backseat. the video you're about to see is from our station in denver, kmgh. you can hear the reaction from the anchors as they watch it unfold. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> he just passed moo he. >> reporter: the race to stop this stolen suv crisscrossing denver kicks into overdrive when

police realize the suspect has a passenger. >> we do believe that the 4-year-old is still in the vehicle. >> reporter: 4-year-old allen was in his mom's car. she ran inside for coffee leaving the engine running. "when i came back out the car wasn't there anymore." she says. little allen still in the backseat as the suspect, 28-year-old ryan stone, makes his next move. all on live tv. >> uh-oh. he's stopping. he'stoing. looks like he's carjacking that person right there. putting that person out of the -- >> oh, my god. >> reporter: stone leaves the boy behind but speeds on sometimes going the wrong way. >> he is now coming up to a busy area right here. >> reporter: here he clips and seriously injures a state trooper who was trying to puncture the car's tires. the trooper was lucky. he's expected to fully recover. >> he just ran into somebody. you saw him right there. >> in danger unknowingly.

his daughter when she was born and being able to bond with her. >> reporter: the judge went one step further ruling in favor of the mom's right to privacy in the delivery room. noting the mom is not required to tell the father she's going into labor, not required to allow him into the delivery room. >> in this case clearly applies to unmarried couples. how it extends to married couples, i don't know. >> reporter: for "good morning america," reena ninan, abc news, new york. >> okay, we wanted you to weigh in. we asked in our flash poll whether moms should be allowed to ban dads from the delivery room? here are the results. 55% say yes and 45% say no. let's get some perspective. dan abrams back. our chief legal affairs anchor along with dr. jennifer ashton. the legal side. >> banning them from the delivery room is the easy call here. it's her call as to what she wants to do in the delivery room. the harder -- >> even if they're married. >> even if they were married i think you could make an argument.

you could be totally estranged and not in the best interest of the child to have a problem in the delivery room. so that seems to me to be the easier call. the tougher call and the reason i was troubled by this decision is the judge didn't seem to need to get that child into the hands of the dad quickly. meaning he's basically say, yes, he'll be able to visit at the hospital, et cetera, with a dad who wants to be part of the process who's saying i want to know when the labor is, i want to be there, i think the judge should have created the situation the minute that child is born dad is going to have a right to bond with that child, to be with the child and i think there's an argument to be made dad should have been informed -- there should have been an effort to say she should use any reasonable means to inform the father that she's have the baby so i think the judge here went a little too far and also i think extended some of the constitutional principles into a case that's really just a family law case. >> let's get dr. jennifer ashton's take. doc, what do you think?

>> most stories have medical and legal angles and, boy, this one is definitely a doozy. in this country, we tend to deliver babies in a medical environment. so my perspective here is purely medical. the concern is the pregnant woman and her fetus, those are my two patients and my concern will always be first and foremost about their safety and i've definitely been involved in deliveries where the dad's behavior has compromised patient care. either they faint or they make a scene and then it takes the eyes off of two patients. it happens. >> good point. i don't think we want to ban dads for fainting. good point. thank you both. all right, guys. yeah, it's a good point. we turn now to -- ? surprise i made a good point. >> i didn't realize the jury was out. the "jeopardy" champion who won close to $300,000 of course, the answer is, who is arthur

justin lansford and his girlfriend love doting on their golden retriever but there's much more to this four-legged friend. what does he mean to you. >> the less i use my chair, my wheelchair, the more i need his help in small tasks and the more he's there, it's been very comforting to know that. >> reporter: can you tell me about your injury? how it happened? >> i was a paratrooper in the 82nd airborne and we were in eastern afghanistan and 2012 we struck an ied and it ripped my truck completely. i had to have my right leg amputated. >> reporter: he was introduced to the warrior canine connection. what are some things you couldn't do before gabe. >> there were things more significantly different. i have a prosthetic lubricant.

he'll run and grab my spray so i can put my leg on. >> what a good boy. from there it just kind of snowballed helping me with one thing to the next. he can help me to and from the ground. i can use him as kind of a brace and i can lean on him to get on to and off of the ground. >> reporter: gabe is always at the ready and it begins from the minute justin comes home. how does he help you get in and out? >> well, he can open the door. come here, gabe. here. get the door. good boy. good boy. >> good boy, gabe. every day. >> good boy. >> anything you need. >> everything i need. >> reporter: at 2 years old he's been working with him as a service dog for five months. he isn't the first life he has touched. >> dismount patrol in afghanistan/pakistan border i see a kid, 15 years old. suicide bomber.

knew what it was. >> reporter: what do you remember from that moment? >> i just remember a big, you know, loud noise, you know, big flash and i remember landing. >> to help with his posttraumatic disorder his doctors suggest he work with a puppy named gabe a candidate for the warrior canine connection. >> it was hard to go back into public without being on edge that it made others uncomfortable. >> in training gabe, it really helped heal you. >> i ended up going with gabe on the metro. >> could you have done that without gabe? >> not a chance. and, you know, it's funny so we went on the metro, we went to a grocery store, by the time i got done with the grocery store i remember sitting there and talking to a couple people that i was with and myself more or less myself like i just did that. >> we're involving the service members in the process of training the dogs and through that process, they're teaching the dog that the world is a safe

place to incorporate that same notion that the world truly is a safe place in the civilian world. >> reporter: spencer hasn't seen gabe since he finished training and become gabe's service dog but this day he traveled from maryland to colorado. the two met who had never met sharing such a special bond. >> look at you. look at you. so handsome. >> reporter: it's pretty remarkable to think that one dog could have such an impact on two lives. >> i owe everything to gabe. i mean, i would jump in front of a bus for gabe in a heartbeat, you know, and i know he would do the same for me. i know he would do the same for justin so that's the kind of connection you have. >> i never had a chance to say thank you to spencer for working with gabe and getting gabe to a point where he could work and help me and being able to see spencer face to face has been awesome.

again, all these stunts live. not a lot of cgi. >> not a lot of cgi and, you know, coming from new york city born and raised i was on the train a lot, you know, riding mta so i did get to have cool stunt driving training and learned to manipulate some cars and stunts, 360s and reverse 180s and spent some time with the beast. >> you were driving the big truck. >> i got to drive the big truck, it was the beast and got to do some stunts in it which was pretty exciting. >> refueling scene. >> a big scene where i have to drive 70 miles an hour. aaron has to pull up in the mustang and maintain 70 miles an hour while my buddy climbs out of the car. >> seeing it right now. >> exactly. there it is. >> and literally we're performing -- we're doing this driving on the freeway at 70 miles an hour. very dramatic. >> to assure people -- everybody is safe. filming it all but aaron said yesterday don't do this at home.

clooney in there whether you kissed him or not. >> well, you have. we're not worthy. >> in the eisenhower administration it was so long ago but, yeah. >> it's a great read and i know very busy with the "housewives" in the next episode you have an episode. >> i scream and i think the audience will see a different side of me. one women maybes a ridiculous accusation, a kind of scandalous about my career and colleague -- >> who is that? >> that i respect. have deep respect for and, yeah, sometimes you got to hit crazy with crazy and, you know, you grin and bear it and you rely on the audience to figure out, you know, why she's saying exactly what she does and i think she maybes it pretty easy. >> because you don't use your voice at that level very often it's very effective. we know you're not kidding around. >> no, no, i think it was very real emotion, probably the most real emotion you'll see on reality. it was like, you know, it was like taking a bullet so i was not -- i was not happy.
