live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> what are you doing? what are you doing? >> hours after a violent clash on city college campus students are taking angry protests to city hall. >> good morning. >> there was push and shoving and person spray as students clashed with police. today, students are armed with a list of demands as they try to get the attention of supervisors at city hall. nick is at city college with more. >> students have cleared the hall but they ahead it clear their fight is far from over. they are headed to city hall to take it to the next level.

>> students at the lobby of the hall claimed victory for the demonstration that lasted through the night. they are calling for reversal of a payment plan that forced students, they believe, out of school because of out-of-state tuition requiring them to pay thousands in fees upfront. >> the policy was you had the whole semester to pay off the tuition. now you have to pay upfront before you regular step. >> the students are not only speaking out about hikes but at the special trustee hired to take over the direction of city college saying there has been a lack of transparency that has put students in the background. >> officials say the information students are working from is outdated or straight up wrong. they believe the guerilla like tactics of the demonstration steal focus from a desire to be heard. it got ugly yesterday.

this video was posted showing students at city college trying to occupy the common hall. two students were arrested. one was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. >> no one said they cannot talk but there is business going on and it is taught on their time schedule. >> officials say signs can only go so far. they want to work with students and are committed to making sure their voices are heard if they follow the rules. the administration is their allies, not the enemy. >> look for fiscal accountability and transparency and open and honest dialogue. >> students are planning a demonstration this afternoon at city hall but the man they want to speak to most will not be there. he is out of town on school business. >> the rally comes right before the board of supervisors committee hearing at 1:00

o'clock p.m. and the supervisor submitted a resolution calling for the reinstatement of city college board of trustees. >> there has been another earthquake in northern california. the 4.1 earthquake hit around 9:30 this morning at 40 miles off the eureka coast with no reports of damage or injuries. sunday night a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the same area followed by half a dozen aftershocks. >> this is a victorian home in oakland that collapsed last night while being renovated. part of the house landed on the home next door. no one was hurt. the structure cannot be saved and will have to be torn down. the cause is under investigation. virgin airline made a lot of noise when it moved into san jose but they will be permanently departing from the heart of silicon valley.

our news reporter joins us from the airport with why. matt? >> this was a blockbuster move by virgin america but you need the passengers a service that never really took off. >> virgin america is not the biggest airline at san jose international airport but it is popular. eight flights to and from los angeles, go away permanently on may 14. this morning, i break the news to loyal passenger, casey, and asked what he will do. >> i didn't know that until right now. so...i am not sure. but...it is depressing. i did like virgin america. >> they started the service to los angeles last may with a lot of fanfare and the celebrity c.e.o. was all smiles at san jose. in a statement released this morning they said that "despite

improving performance at san jose international airport demand in the market hasn't met expectations and we made the decision to focus on more lucrative opportunities." the route to los angeles is competitive and there are many options. >> probably half or three-quarters full so i can understand if it is like that all the time. >> passenger have to decide if they will head to sfo or switch airlines to use san jose. >> i would go with a different airline and fly in here because of the convenience. >> something we have enough options to offer people they didn't have to drive a long way to go to los angeles. >> if you purchased a ticket after may 14, virgin america will book you an alternate find at sfo or refund your money.

well, cooler temperatures today. what about the st. patrick's weekend? >> thank you, eric. on the roof we have the high clouds taking over the low clouds. that, along with the sea breeze, will keep our temperatures cooler than yesterday. nine degree coolers in oakland. seven in san francisco. through the weekend, the winds will change direction. most of us are in the low-to-mid 60's. our records are the low-to-upper 80's. we could set a few records. that is an idea of the ball park of the temperatures with specific numbers in the forecast. katie marzullo? tough new water restrictions in effect in alameda county. the board declares a water shortage emergency in fremont, newark and union city applying to landscaping with lawns only watered once during the weeks

twice a week in the summer. there are some exceptions for parks and schools. first time violators are issued a warning and continued violations could result in termination of water service. in hayward police found 500 pot plants inside a home at stonewall avenue and nevada road. the grow was discovered when a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report a small fire before midnight. investigators believe the fire was started by a blown circuit. it appears someone was living at the house and they are trying to figure who this person is. >> the oakland police department is considering getting rid of shotspotter, the gunshot detection system, according to the chronicle, they proposed doing away with the $264,000 program because it is too expensive and the money could be used on other things such as a police helicopter but residents oppose this. >> this is a picture of a man holding up people at a.t.m.'s

in the bay area this is from 8:00 yesterday morning at an a.t.m. in daly city. the man told a woman he was armed and forced her to withdraw $900 from the account. investigators say he has committed similar robberies in fremont and newark and this past wednesday in pleasant hill. life is not back to normal in san francisco's mission bay neighborhoods. the streets are closed and the crime seen tape is up around the site of the biggest fire in san francisco history with three fire engines putting out the hotspots. the apartment building has been reduced to three story pile of rubble. on the peninsula, pg&e is finishing emergency repair work on a gas line on highway 101. pg&e says you may smell natural gas. you could hear a jet engine at federal and old county road. they started the work at 7:00

>> a santa cruz police officer responding to a noise complain was injured when the suspect attacked him. jamie smith set up an illegal camp site and an officer asked him to come out from behind a tree he charged the officer. police say the suspect was carrying a braided rope with four, 8" metal spikes that hit the officer's arms and back. smith was arrested. the officer was treated and released from the hospital. >> officials are seriously examining the possibility that the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370 may have been an act of piracy. two sources tell abc that the two communication systems were shut gown adding fuel to the theory this may have been a deliberate act. officials also tell abc that the plane may have flown up to four hours beyond the last sighting on radar because the radar was pinging a satellite and they are exploring the possibility it landed someplace.

>> also, the number of deaths tried to a serious general motors recall could be much higher than first thought. a study by the center for auto safety says 303 deaths can be tied to accidents in g.m. cars where airbags did not deploy. the findings are based on a review of federal crash debt. g.m. said it was aware of 12 deaths. they recalled 1.6 million cars last month although it knew of the issue for a decade. a faulty ignition switch can suddenly turn off the car and disable the airbags at high speed. the first confirmed case of a woman contracting h.i.v. from another woman. the centers for disease control reports that the two texas women were in a monogamy relationship for six months and one was hi positive and the other was not the they had unprotected sex frequently and centers for disease control transmission from one woman to another is rare, and usually those cases are traced to drug use or heterosexual sex. the san diego zoo is

welcoming a new baby gorilla delivered through a c-section. the gorilla is two days old and is dealing with complications but the condition improved overnight. the baby gorilla was born on wednesday and weighed 4.5 pounds. she new is in intensive care. her mother is recovering from surgery, as well, and the 18-year-old gore really went into labor on wednesday but showed no signs of progress she was taken to the vet hospital. this is her first baby. >> dannon will take something out of the most popular yogurt products. they say they will cut back the amount of sugar and fat in all of the yogurts for children in two years and they say they plan on besting other nutrients like vitamin did in their yogurt and hopes to make 75 percent of the products low fat or fast free --

east bay hills, there haze throughout the east bay hills and valleys headed over to mount diabolo with record high possible tomorrow and sunday and cooler starting on st. patrick's day on monday but the transition is going to remain dry. storm track to the north is close enough we are getting high clouds from the cold front and it is going to pass weekly to our north and it will steer the breezes along with the area of high pressure into us with the high pressure building behind the front and that will bring us the warmer weather tomorrow. today, upper 50's and low 60's along the coast. palo alto and south into santa clara valley, low 70's and low-to-mid 70's in the north bay and east bay valley. for the nighttime hours we are in the upper 40's around most of the bay shore and a lot of low-to-mid 40's inland and san francisco is the mild spot at 50 and the manner layer of clouds is nearly nonexistent tomorrow morning as we head into the afternoon, there is the off short wind developing and that will bring us the warmer-than-average temperatures
