officials now say they know what happened to missing malaysia air flight 370. th is a live look from a news conference about to get underway. >> any minute now, malaysian officials are expected to announce definitive evidence the plane carrying 239 people was hijacked and then taken off course deliberately. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. ama dates is in the newsroom with the latest for us. ama? >> dan and carolyn, we are waiting for this news conference to begin. we are told the prime minister is going to be making an announcement. here is what what we learned so far in the last couple hours. a government official said it is conclusive that one of the pilots highjacked the malaysia

airline jet missing since last saturday. the official said nomo tiff was established and it is not yet clear where the plane was taken. now here is some of the evidence that lead them to this conclusion. the boeing 777 commune cation with the -- communication was severed. abc news learned there were several turns that took the jet toward the indian ocean leading to the conclusion a rogue pilot or hijacker was controlling the plane. >> if somebody is making a major heading changing it would impact the controls. >> they believe two key tracking devices were intentionally turned off in the cockpit. after disappearing from radar, sources say the jet was pinging a satellite every hour for four hours to a data health system which means the plane could have flown 2400

additional miles in any direction. now, the last known satellite data could narrow down the position of the jet. however, if the plane did crash into the indian ocean, it could be difficult to find with depths reaching 15,000 feet. i have learned that indian navy ships supported by surveillance planes and helicopters have been scouring the areas without any success in finding any sign of this missing plane. the indian coast guard official says they have expanded farther west into the bay of b nee gal. they are looking it the bay of bengal and the coast searching for the missing plane. we are monitoring the news conference and we will send it back to you and let you know if we will get any new word. >> a 27-year-old usc graduate may be among the 239 people missing.

they confirmed that the description published in the chinese newspaper is a match. the birthday found in the flight man manifest is a match. he was working for shell oil in beijing. we are waiting any moment for a news conference with this official announcement for the malaysian officials that the plane was hijacked. that's what we expect him to say. we will bring that to you as soon as it happens, but our reporting continues on twitter on abc7 news bay area. >> investigators are in castro valley where a woman was found dead in her house. her daughter discovered the body around 4:00 this afternoon at the home on stanton avenue. abc7 news reporter alan wang has been speaking with neighbors tonight. alan? >> reporter: alameda county's crime scene center is parked out front and crime scene detectives is moving in and out. the woman's body is still in the home partly because police

campbel back road. a woman fell about 20 feet down a steep hill. crews had to use a rope and a basket to pull her back up. no word on her condition. daly city leaders want to ban e cigarettes. there are three in daly city and at least one is located near a church in the school. they are worried the e cigarettes will end up in the hands of young people. the mayor wants them banned entirely. san francisco is considering a ban on e cigarettes. >> a palo alto man made a wise choice and that's when he saw hems plastered on on northern california's website. he was being sought for firing a gun during a fight at a party in san leandro last year. as the police chief put it, he didn't use good judgment at that party, but he did last week. he turned himself in after seeing his picture on the website. >> mandatory water restrictions are in effect for

300,000 people in alameda county. they cannot refill their pools without a shut off nozzle and lawns can be watered twice in the spring. once in the fall. it may result in termination of water service. the district declared a water shortage last month. the east bay mud is taking a new hands on approach to save water. the utility sent out technicians to search for interior and exterior water leaks at the homes of three customers. they estimate one in four houses has a leak either from a sprinkler or a dripping faucet or a running toilet. >> toilets are the number one water wasters. they don't make a sound at times and you can't see the leak. and that's why their water bill or their water consumption has gone up so high. >> technicians say dripping faucets are also a big water waster. they can leak up to 45 gallons of water a day.

they plan to open a pipe leak repair site on monday. this effort is in association with the environmental protection agency. information posted on-line may lure thieves to empty vacation homes in sonoma county. property managers reported 52 burglaries since september. they suspect on-line booking information gives thieves a tip and a pathway to those vacant homes. sheriff detectives believe the crimes are linked because of the way crooks break in and the things they steal like big screen tv's. a dog on the job tracked down 50 pounds of marijuana hidden in a driver's car. here is 2-year-old dickey posing with the huge find. he alerted his human partner to the drunk. the officer found the drugs sealed inside with $14,000 cash. a man from brooke dale was arrested. he has been on-the-job for eight months.

still awaiting word from the malaysian prime minister. a news conference is about to get under way. we have a live look there to show you, but we have learned tonight that a government official in malaysia says it is conclusive that one of the pilots that someone else with flying experience hijacked the airline jet. sky news said the conference was delayed because the prime minister may be speaking with the families of the passengers on board. a government official is saying it is conclusive the plane was hijacked either by someone with flying experience or one of the pilots. we will keep you updated and let you know if anything changes throughout the newscast.

say with a high degree of certainty that the aircraft communications addressing and reporting systems was disabled before the aircraft reached h the east coast of the peninsula. shortly afterwards near the border between malaysia and vietnamese, air traffic control, the aircraft from this point onward the

step closer to finding the plane. >> all right, that is malaysian prime minister outlining the state of the investigation today. he stopped short of using the word hijacking. what he did describe was a transponder being turned off and some of the communications equipment turned off as part of a deliberate act. he did not say that the plane was hijacked at this point. >> he did talk about the search area expanding. he talked about the direction this plane could have gone in when it changed course. he mentioned kazakstan as a possibility and another search of the indian ocean or a further search of the indian ocean because that area has been searched at this point as well jie. this plane carrying 239 people vanished with absolutely no trace seven days

ago on its way to beijing. there has been rampant speculation and a massive search effort. the f.a.a. and ntsb joined this investigation to help malaysian authorities try to figure out what happened to this plane. >> that has been a bit tricky because they were not allowed to take part in the veges -- the investigation into recently. when they did, they reported that the systems were disabled. that was the first clue when abc news broke that story a day or two ago now. they lead us to believe that, wait a minute, this appeared to be a deliberate action. >> one of the things we found interesting that we heard today was up until at least earlier today, don't know about the last few hours, but malaysian authorities had not looked at the apartments of the two pilots to see if there were clues or information in their apartments about what may have happened to this plane. >> the on going investigation
