good morning, everyone. it's 8:00 a.m. on saturday. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's lisa argen. >> check out this shot. it is nice and clear, but we do have patchy fog at the coast where visibility reduced to 2 miles. half moon bay, that's going to change, though. livermore is at 47, it's 41 in

napa, and the view from san jose this morning, nice and clear with 50 degrees there, 46 in los gatos. we were in the 70s yesterday, but upper 70s today from our east bay valleys, even, perhaps, around gilroy, morgan hill, couple of temperatures approaching 80 degrees. and these 60s will be more like upper 60s along the coast with sunny skies and a very weak onshore flow. i'll explain in further detail and have a look at the first day of spring in a couple of minutes. developing news on the malaysian airlines jet. initially, there was word that the plane had been in the air for four hours, but now officials say the plane may have been airborne for eight hours. >> reporter: it's now clear, say investigators, communication gears switched off, changing direction of flight 370 appear to all be done on purpose by someone at the controls.

>> these movement are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. >> reporter: this is the latest. at 12:41 departure to beijing. but just past 26 minutes in, a data signaling system is shut off. then 40 minutes in at 1:21 in the morning, the 777's location transmitter also shut off. and now confirmed, the plane does turn around heading back across malaysia and is last seen on radar at 2:15 a.m. but this morning, we know because the jet was signaling a satellite each hour, it turned again, either north or south and flew for another six hours at least. 3,600 miles. a source and experts tell abc news, the southern route is the most likely uncovered by radar, putting the malaysian jet somewhere off australia. why and who did this? one unnamed malaysian official

is quoted as saying it's inconclusive, it's a hijacking. >> despite knee-jerk reports that the plane was hijacked, i wish to be very clear. we are still investigating all possibilities as to what caused flight 370 to deviate from its original flight path. >> and that includes the possibility that one or both of the pilots went rogue turning off that communication gear and turning around. we only know how far this plane flew because of the satellite pings. and we and the world's pilots only learned a couple of days ago that that system cannot be shut off by a pilot. so the search of the south china sea has been called off. a new search will undoubtedly begin off australia. but even though we know when the jet last pinged the satellite, it could have flown on for another hour. abc news, washington.

a 27-year-old u.s. sea graduate may be among those missing. confirmed the description published in a chinese newspaper is a match. the birth date found on the flight manifest is also a match. joy was working for shell oil in beijing. our reporting continues right now on twitter at abc7newsbayarea. investigators trying to figure out what happened after a woman found dead inside her house. her daughter discovered the body around 4:00 yesterday afternoon at the home on stanton avenue. >> well, this is very unusual. >> reporter: the neighbors agree. there was shock when they saw a teenage girl leaving her castro valley home in tears. she had just found her mother's body in the house around 4:00 p.m. >> we are sure this is a homicide. we're investigating it as such. >> i'm shocked and scared at the same time. >> reporter: she and her husband

lived next door. they say the family also has a third grade daughter who attends the elementary school across the street. ricardo says the victim's husband is a quiet man. >> one time i saw him. >> working? >> yes, working. >> reporter: outside of that, the neighbors know very little about those who live here. tom lives two doors down. >> a long time ago, people were more friendly and more close. but nowadays, people change all the time. it's kind of hard to be friends with people because they stay themselves. >> usually an adult family member will give police access to search it. but in this case, they had to obtain a search warrant which tells us one of two things. the husband either denied police access or they can't find him. at last check, police told us they were still trying to locate the husband. reporting in castro valley, abc 7 news. new this morning, police in

pacifica are investigating after a woman's body washed ashore at the beach. the body was discovered around 4:30 yesterday. she was pulled from the surf at the north end of the beach and taken to the san mateo county coroner's office. no word yet on the cause of death. this morning, authorities in shellville are investigating after two thieves made off with a gas station atm. this happened around 3:45 at the 76 gas station on arnold drive. the gas station's owner's son says surveillance footage shows the suspect wrapping straps around the machine, hooking it up to a stolen van and ripped it from the wall. they then loaded it into the van and took off. more than a dozen students at multiple east bay middle schools have been disciplined for sharing sexually explicit photos. one student is accused of coercing another into sex. a parent contacted the district monday after hearing a rumor about the photos being shared. the police found 16 students

involved at four different middle schools in brentwood and byron. >> we're lucky to live in a community where the police department has taken a proactive approach. they've hosted classes for the families in this community to come out and talk about online safety. we do that in our schools, as well. but obviously, there's more to continue to do to support the families and the kids. >> the contra costa county d.a. is reviewing the case to determine if criminal charges should be filed. investigators are still looking for the cause of the massive fire in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood. hovered above when part of the structure collapsed during tuesday's inferno. arson investigators have focused their search. looking for a cause and still too dangerous to enter the building. so far, they've been checking it out from a safe vantage point on an aerial ladder. daily city leaders want to ban the sale of ecigarettes, currently three stores in daly city. at least one of them located near a church and school.

worried they'll end up in the hands of young people and not just adults looking for a way to quit smoking. the mayor wants them banned entirely. san francisco is also considering a ban on ecigarettes. a palo alto manmade a wise choice after googling himself last week. when he did that, he found himself on northern california's most wanted website. 27-year-old christopher was being sought for firing a gun during a fight at a party in san leandro last year. as the police chief puts it, he did not use good judgment at the party, but he did last week when he turned himself in. new this morning, despite being declared brain dead three months ago, the family says the teenager is showing signs of life. according to the san francisco chronicle, his uncle says while the 13-year-old remains unconscious, she looks healthy and moves her body regularly. says the girl even turns in the direction of visitors when they enter her room indicating she understands her surroundings. she was declared brain dead in

december following complications from tonsil surgery. information posted online might lure thieves to empty vacation homes in sonoma county. property managers have reported 52 burglaries since september. they suspect online booking information gives thieves a pathway to vacant homes. believe they're linked due to the way the crooks break in and the items they steal, like big screen tvs. well, plan to allow people in the bay area to run with the bulls is facing fierce opposition from animal rights activists. the event is modeled after the running of the bulls in pamplona spain. abc 7 news reporter has this story. >> reporter: this video provided by to abc 7 news by the animal legal defense fund shows a great bull run in florida. the company called the great bull run is selling tickets for another event at the alameda county fairgrounds on july 26th. but peta have filed a lawsuit

against the company and the provider of the bulls. >> california law makes it illegal to force a bull to fight with a human being. it also makes it illegal to cause unjustifiable suffering to an animal. and finally, it makes it unlawful to host a bloodless bullfight or similar event. >> we reached out but didn't get a response. its website states we don't kill the bulls in a bullfight, nor do we abuse them in any way. we don't hit them, shock them or deprive them of food, water, light or sleep. but the attorney says the cruelty is clear. >> the potential for them to get entangled with other bulls or runners fall and break a leg or gore one another. >> says runners punched the bulls at the florida event and in texas, the bulls tried to get away from the runners only to be la lassoed into compliance. >> i don't think it's necessarily cruel just because

the future of crimea hinges on a vote tomorrow. that's when residents will decide if they'll separate from ukraine and join russia. russian forces currently control crimea and make up a majority of crimea's population. john kerry says the u.s. and other nations will not recognize a vote to join russia. the state department has issued a travel alert for americans traveling to the ukraine/russia border. the funding package on the golden gate bridge could be in place as soon as may. it's still unclear who will pay for what portion of the $66 million project. officials say the bridge

district is in the process of applying for highway funds to help pay for it. meanwhile, several members of the golden gate bridge board say the district needs to look at ways to use toll money to fund the project. well, seems like one of the most popular get rich quick dreams in the bay area right now is to come up with a smartphone app and make millions. it is possible if you have the skills, but where do you start? 7 on your side's michael finney has some ideas. >> reporter: i'm all for getting rich quick, so i interviewed one of the hottest app developers around. the big idea has to come from you. but the details he has down. >> right now, we have 5 billion connected devices. and in probably seven years, have probably 50 billion connected devices all over the world. >> and that's why you can get rich. a growing market. and that's also why many companies are starting with a mobile device app rather than a website.

more than $7,000 for bosco's care. he spent his career with the police department. bosco, though, was diagnosed just last month with an aggressive form of bone cancer. he had to have his right leg and shoulder amputated. the dog had his first chemotherapy treatment earlier this week, the first in a series of radiation treatments, estimated to cost $9,000. new this morning, professional dog walkers are facing tighter rules in the recreation area. park officials say they'll require a permit for commercial dog walkers with four or more dogs at one time with a limit of six dogs. the permit will be required on golden gate national recreational properties. the new rules set to go into effect some time after a 30-day notice period, which began yesterday. nearly 200 volunteers in oakland will get a chance to buzz the fuzz today to raise awareness for childhood cancer. happening today, the seventh

annual fundraiser at children's hospital. volunteers will shave their heads in the hope of raising $250,000 for childhood cancer research. oakland raiders wide receiver and former raider jerry porter will participate. the event gets underway at 11:00. st. patrick's day, you know, is monday. but you can get an early start celebrating the luck of the irish today in san francisco. happening today, the city's 163rd annual st. patrick's day parade kicks off at 11:30 downtown. if you're coming in from the north bay, you can take the ferries to get within a few blocks of the starting point. the parade begins at 2nd and market streets and ends at civic center. market street will be closed to through traffic. great day to celebrate. >> of course. great weekends, next week not looking bad either for march 17th, on monday, the ides of march today, right? >> yeah, good morning, everyone. live doppler 7 hd, where nothing

to beware today. if you like it on the warm side, you're in luck. otherwise, the onshore flow doesn't return until first part of next week. slightly offshore. we will have a light sea breeze. overall, it is just about sunshine over the weekend. right now, san jose, sitting underneath the sunny skies, 50 degrees, 46 in redwood city. good morning to you. san francisco, 53. it is 49 in half moon bay. a little bit of patchy coastal fog. view looking a bit hazy. and the numbers here have been cool. from the low 40s, napa center, 51 in fairfield, and for our friends out in the east bay valleys, upper 40s with concord coming in at 49, 47 in livermore. here are our forecast highlights. more or less, pretty clear this morning, much warmer over the weekend. and that will allow for temperatures to flirt with records. we have to be well into the 80s,

though. we may touch 80, morgan hill, los gatos, the rest of us pretty close, though. and we will look for the weather like this to stick around for the second half of the weekend. there is well out in the pacific and they're going to get closer and closer. so by tomorrow, noontime, into monday, we've got the westerly flow, 12 to 14 feet. these continue to build to about 7 feet right now. and then, possibility of sneaker waves. so dangerous up there. and it's going to be beautiful. but still, you have to be careful. gusty santa ana winds in southern california with the high surf. 83 in los angeles. and it's 20s in sierra nevada, but yeah, 61 degrees for lake tahoe. still plenty of fun there. and there is a spring break for many schools, and a lot of kids still in the sierra nevada with some good skiing. in the south bay, look for 78 in santa clara, 77 in sunnyvale. santa cruz, 76 degrees today. look at half moon bay.

little fog, that will scour out, we'll see 70 this afternoon, very weak sea breeze. overall, the forecast is slightly offshore for the weekend. and that's why we're looking at the warmest temperatures here in the north bay. and further south in the south bay with 79, 78 santa rosa. but look at that, 80 in cloverdale. it's that compressional heating we get with high pressure as it builds into the north and east of us and exactly what it's doing over the weekend. 73 in hayward, 74 in richmond. that very almost summer-like weather. brentwood, 78, we don't really want to skip over spring. between now and june, san francisco averages over 5 1/2 inches of rain for those three months. so we still could get some. this 7-day outlook, not looking like it. forecast shows 80s inland, 70s coast, cooldown and breezy

welcome back, everyone. it's 8:30. and we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. >> a little hazy from this vantage point. we do have a little bit of fog half moon bay, otherwise a clear start and a cooler start for north bay valleys and also along the coast. it's 51 by the delta, 49 in concord and livermore. so here's the plan for today with the clear sky and high pressure building in. nothing in the way of fog. so that will allow temperatures even at the coast to climb through the 60s. about 67 today, half moon bay, 70. you head over into the east bay, the san ramon valley in the mid to upper 70s, and, perhaps, down around gilroy could see about 80. shy of some averages. we'll talk about the rest of the weekend and the spring forecast as we usher that in next

thursday. new this morning, president obama's move to make more workers eligible for overtime pay is being hailed by democrats as a potent midterm election issue. the president signed a presidential memorandum thursday directing the labor department to devise new overtime rules that will likely affect millions of americans. in his weekly address, the president says the move was to ensure workers are paid a fair wage. >> we've got to build an economy that works for everybody, not just for the fortunate few. we know from our history that our economy grows best from the middle out. when growth is more widely shared. so we've got to restore opportunity for all. the idea that with hard work and responsibility, you can get ahead. >> critics call the move an example of presidential overreach. the chp has opened an administrative investigation into how caltrans handled complaints about the well being on the new bay bridge. last year, engineers reported finding hundreds of cracked welds on the bridge. and one says his company lost a

contract after launching a complaint. the agency that oversees caltrans says it asked chp to look into if it was anything more than a disagreement. the old bay bridge, meanwhile, is quickly being dismantled and could become a distraction to drivers. >> if you mistakenly assume that the bay bridge construction project is finished, then clearly you have not accessed the new eastern span via the bike pass temporary entrance. it is soon to be part of a history. >> starting at 8:00 p.m. on sunday, march 23rd, the bike path will be closed for up to one week, and at the latest, will reopen at 6:00 a.m. on monday, march 31st. >> that's andrew gordon who speaks for the bridge. >> explaining the closure that will enable the completion of this permanent entrance to the bike path that's all part of the plan. as is this. you're looking at the latest sky 7 footage of yet another bay

bridge engineering project, the $240 million de-construction of the once iconic section. some 58,000 tons of steel and 245,000 tons of concrete. how does this tie into the bay bridge bike path? well, the bike path has a lot close-up view of the work. >> yeah, it's really cool. >> i have no idea. breaking it apart, i guess. >> methodically, we might add and carefully. a step by step reversal of the construction process. and you can see all of that from the bike path for a little while longer, at least. caltrans plans to install protective gates to keep observers from getting too close. >> and while demolition work is taking place, that gate will be locked. on the off chance -- >> reporter: just an fyi for you fans of de-construction. if you want to get a good look at the action, you'd better hurry.

along the bay bridge, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. >> sky 7hd offers a safe way to see the bay bridge demolition. the highway patrol emphasizes it is important to watch the road in front of you and not get distracted by the activity on the old span. >> as a driver, any distraction can take your mind off the road. your most important priority, though, is the safety of your vehicle and passengers and everyone on the roadway with you. >> and they add, watching anything other than the traffic can be as distracting and as dangerous as texting while driving. changing insurance policies for drivers. the ride service says the move is to address concerns for liability over accidents with drivers who are working but don't have passengers. this happened as a driver hit and killed a 6-year-old on new year's eve. they claim they were not responsibility because the driver didn't have a passenger in the car at the time.

an attorney for the family says the new coverage is not enough. >> they're saying that their same car on the roadway if it has a passenger in it, they'll pay $1 million. if there's no one in it, they'll pay $50,000. and it's just a sham. they're trying a pr move to deal with the situation they have not provided adequate insurance. >> could not be reached to comment on the attorney's claims. two other ride companies have also announced plans to increase coverage. happening today, oakland parents will meet with police and school officials to discuss sexual assaults on campuses. the meeting hosted by the mayor comes after two reported instances of a man inappropriately touching children at world academy and think college now elementary school. the incidents occurred on march 7th and january 24th. today's meeting, which will focus on the east oakland area begins at 10:00 a.m. east bay mud is taking a new hands on approach to saving water.

yesterday, the utility sent out technicians to search for interior and exterior water leaks. estimating 1 in 4 houses has a leak from a sprinkler, dripping faucet or running toilet. >> toilets are the number one water wasters. and that's because they don't make a sound at times. and that's the reason the water consumption has done up so high. >> technicians say dripping faucets also a big water waster. they can leak up to 45 gallons of water a day. the utility plans to open a repair site starting on monday. the epa's national fix a leak week. mandatory water restrictions are in effect for alameda county. people in fremont, union city and newark cannot water their lawns on consecutive days. first-time violators will be

welcome back. happening today, the blue angels are taking to the skies. the u.s. navy kicks off the 2014 air show season today with a show at the naval air facility. after being grounded much of last year due to forced spending cuts. the blue angels are scheduled for 68 performances at 35 locations between now and november. they will return to the bay area in october for fleet week. wow, some of those angles make

welcome back, everyone, it's 8:44. how about this gorgeous view from our camera. see all that sun glistening off the bay there. that's how it's going to be through most of the bay area today. nice and warm and sunny. good news, if that's the way you like your weather. who doesn't, right? well, the bay area research team believes it has an innovative solution to two critical problems facing california. it's a device designed to deliver energy and fresh water. here's abc 7 news anchor carolyn johnson with the details. >> reporter: on a foggy day along the bay area coastline, it can be hard to spot anything besides surf p and sand. but researchers believe they can see a clear and promising future in these crashing waves. marcus lehman is a graduate engineer at the university california berkeley.

and behind him is a device known as the sea floor carpet designed to harness the power of waves. >> you can clearly see that the carpet follows the wave motion. and this motion of the carpet then drives the pumps underneath. >> it's a scaled down version of what could ultimately be a reliable energy system with the potential to provide other benefits, as well. the professor who leads the team says the idea is based loosely on the physics of mud which lies on the sea floor absorbing much of the turbulence created by waves before they crash on to the shorelines. >> it came to my mind if mark can do such a good job. if we place the carpet on the seabed that responds to the action of overpassing waves, the same way responds, then to be able to take out the same amount. >> reporter: as seen in this animation provided by the lab, the action of the hydraulic pumps forces sea water through a single line which creates a high pressure flow that can be used

to produce electricity onshore. but in addition to driving turbines, the team believes pumps could also be used to provide something just as valuable to california. fresh, drinkable water. >> the current process we have, generates high pressure water that can be used. and it's the first application that we're working on at this point. >> we could switch to fresh water used to generate to produce fresh water in times where, let's say at night where there's no sun shining. we could use ways to produce electricity. >> the team is setting up partnerships to create a large scale prototype and hopes to begin ocean testing within two years. perhaps ultimately turning the tide toward renewables, ocean energy. carolyn johnson, abc 7 news. >> the carpet certainly isn't the first attempt to harness wave power. but the team believes it has several advantages over competing technologies. because it sits on the ocean

the low 40s with the cool spots in napa, santa rosa, 47 in livermore. so the subtle changes this morning without the fog and with the sunny start, we're on our way to a warmer weekend. but we do have a couple atmospheric elements helping that out, that's high pressure firmly in control with the push. and that will allow for perhaps a couple of temperatures in the 80s. we would have to be well into the mid-80s, though, to break records around the bay area. so compared to yesterday, we're warmer today, anywhere from 2 to 8 degrees warmer, and we were above average yesterday. so yesterday's readings from the upper 60s in hayward, 66 in san francisco, it was 70 in oakland. now today, we're coming up 4 to 5 degrees, but this is about 10 to 15 degrees above average because average highs are only in about the low 60s to upper 60s. so that would feel pretty good, too, if we had that. but bonus today and tomorrow as

high pressure builds on in. the high is pushing down on the atmosphere and the wing shift. so very little fog if any at all. and then this system will graze northern california on monday. it also builds the swell. it'll bring windy conditions. so for springtime, it's usually kind of breezy around here. we'll get a couple of days next week that will feature some more breezier winds and cooler numbers. not today, though, 76, look for cupertino to warm to 78, menlo park, a sunny afternoon at 76. 67 in pacifica. and it's all about sunshine today, downtown at 70 degrees, 3:00 this afternoon. up in the north bay, 80 in cloverdale with 76 in vallejo. san leandro, 74. union city, 75, and fremont, a significant warm-up today in the mid-70s. concorde 78 this afternoon and walnut creek, you could be close

here come the winning numbers from last night's $353 million megamillions draw. 7, 20, 40, 54, 69 and the mega number is 12. and nobody picked all six numbers. this jackpot been rolling since january 3rd. so now tuesday's jackpot estimated at $400 million. that is the third largest megamillions jackpot ever. new this morning, athletes from san jose state university are slated to compete in the world cup. that's the fictional sport from the harry potter series. the team received its first ever invitation to compete in the seventh quititch world cup. now trying to raise money to go to the tournament held next month in south carolina at myrtle beach. hosts the top 80 teams in the world. san jose state is the first team in the system to be invited. so congratulations to them.
