9:44 on this sunday morning. this is a live look from our east bay hills cam. spring begins thursday. but we have been having spring-like weather for a long, long time and it continues this week. lisa will be along shortly with all the details. this east bay reservoir looks pretty full now, but it may not be for long. despite the drought, some of this water will have to be released well before summer to protect the delta. the issue is the salinity of the water and it's effect on fish and farmers. to reduce the high salt content, the contra costa water district is releasing stored, fresh water from another reservoir into the delta. but there is concerns the problems could be long lasting. reporter laura anthony has the details. >> reporter: normally the water coming into this intake facility near discovery bay would be relatively fresh, thanks to an
9:46 am
influx of rainwater and outflows from the snowmelt in the sierra to the north. but this year at this pump station and three others the contra costa water district is finding salinity levels have surged upwards. >> in some cases we are seeing salinity levels about three to five times what we would be normally be seeing this year. >> in order to keep the water quality high, contra costa water district has had to release water from their primary storage facility at this reservoir, but sooner than they would like. >> this expanded reservoir is providing benefits to us this year with more supplies available for blending. however, it does not make us immune to drought conditions. >> in fact, the district is looking at a drought management plan that may include a call for greater conservation so that it doesn't get too depleted. and it's not just water quality
9:47 am
that's impacted. farmers and fishermen up and down the delta will feel the effects of the higher -- the higher salinity levels possibly for years to come. >> but where you will see the effect on the fishery is the overall numbers in the years to come. this year will be a very bad year for spawning for striped bass, for sturgeon, and then when you don't see the mature fish eight or nine years from now. >> the recent expansion for the reservoir has been a big help. that project was completed in 2012. there are at least preliminary studies underway to expand it again by 70%. in antioch, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> well, giffords us some good news, lisa. >> okay. the good news is that we have such a wide variety around here had that someone is going to like this weather somewhere. we have a return to the on shore bush. if you want it cooler, go to the coast. we have patchy fog with mile and a quarter visibility half moon
9:48 am
bay. and the extended outlook liking like we are going to see a little rain, not this week and into next week. plenty of rain that could fall from march, april and may. not plenty, maybe about 5 inches or so average in san francisco. mt. tam, here's the low clouds, the fog deck where it is shallow but it will be making an impact. 5 a in redwood city. los gatos is at 60 in san jose. plenty of sunshine. for some of you are inland location as couple degrees warmer. while we cool down about five degrees along the shoreline. santa rosa still cool, in the mid-40s. here's a look from our east bay hills camera where it is about the sunshine today and a ridge of high pressure that's still allowing for temperatures above average. but the sea breeze allowing for some cooler coastal numbers and then everyone will cool down dramatically tomorrow as we get
9:49 am
behind a vigorous front that's going to pass through overnight tonight. maybe even giving us a little bit of drizzle. so there's the fog. it is banked up from north of point reyes and it pulls back a little bit as you get down toward santa cruz. but we will be looking at the patchy fog throughout the day today. so not really showing up here. because of the on shore gradients are so weak, we will still have 60s at the coast and plenty of 70s and even 80 at gilroy. morgan hill, out toward the valley. even livermore you could see about 80 degrees today. the radar and satellite picture shows the dominant weather feature as this area of high pressure continues to flatten. the ridge will weaken today but still exerting its pressure on the atmosphere and that's allowing for the compressed marine layer. as the inland temperatures stay well above average, we are looking at this front to continue to generate the large swells and as it passes over us overnight, the fog is going to
9:50 am
make a comeback for the peninsula, the south bay and all around parts of our near east bay. already 7 to 9-foot waves here. this is just the beginning because by noontime they are really going to continue to build. so the warmest day of the week today. the coolest day of the week tomorrow. waking up to low clouds and fog, some mist and drizzle. then we will rebound and the winds will back off come tuesday. but another system will allow for breezy winds come thursday. highs today from the mid-60s northern sierra. mid-70s southern sierra. upper 80s los angeles. and we are looking at temperatures today cooler at the coast. from the mid-60s there to the mid-70s on the peninsula. 80 palo alto, san jose and the accuweather seven-day forecast, st. patrick's day much cooler. low 760s coast, 70s inland. tuesday and wednesday still kind of mild with sunny inland and high temperatures above average, but by the end of the weekend next week we should be cooling
9:51 am
back to near average. but still no rain in the next seven days. >> all right. i am going to pinch you, even though it's not st. patrick's but you won't have on green. i won't see you tomorrow.
