effort. the main focus on the southern indian ocean off the west coast of australia at this hour. malaysian airlines flight 370 could have remained in the air for seven hours. some parts of the indian ocean are almost three miles deep. lots to get to. before we go that, we have to go to breaking news in the west on that 4.4 magnitude earthquake felt all across the greater los angeles area. nick watt joins us live by phone from las vegas right now. good morning to you, nick. >> reporter: good morning, josh. well, this was a relatively shallow earthquake, just five miles down, we think centered around the ensee know area, northwest los angeles. about 15 miles from downtown but as you say, felt across all of los angeles. i'm about seven miles it shook me off of my bed, set off my security alarm in my head. one guy in west hills said it felt like a bomb had gone off underneath his house. pictures shaken off walls but most importantly, no injuries
7:03 am
reported so far by the los angeles fire department. they are on emergency alert. but no injuries so far. this was certainly the most sustained earthquake we felt here in a couple of years. it lasted a few seconds. a couple weeks ago we had a 3.2 that was just a quick jolt. this lasted for a few seconds and certainly makes people concerned. remember, it was 20 years ago the north ridge earthquake, 6.7 that killed 20 people. sorry 57 people. that's in people's minds. lot of people work here in lafrgs, lot of people little bit scared, josh. >> of course, nick, it happening really in the pre-dawn hours. that fear is understandable. i do want to ask, historically many of the quakes felt in the greater los angeles area do the end to be more slow rum blers. you said yourself, i talked to a couple people in the lafrgs as well, they're all describing it as a sharp jolt this morning. >> reporter: well, it was a sharp jolt but there was a little bit of a roll to it. we had a sharp jolt two weeks

ago a 3.2, i think that was. and that was just a jolt. this definitely lasted a few seconds. it was sharp but it lasted for few seconds. >> again, we'll have updates on any damage done by this earthquake as news becomes available. nick watt, thank you for that. we want to turn now to malaysian plane flight 370 and the new details on the search for the missing jumbo jet at this hour. abc's david kerley has the very latest joins us in studio with big developments now, overnight on the co-pilot. this development of the last radio coming from the copilot. this is significant. as to what may have actually happened in that cockpit. the priority remains trying to find this aircraft. you were hearing about these two possible lines of the last location of flight 370. this all comes from partial satellite data. it kind of seems strange. one to the north, one to the south. two sources tell us the southern arc off australia is the one we need to concentrate.
7:05 am
this morning, as it becomes clear that someone shut down much of flight 370s' commune gags gear, they probably didn't realize that the jet was still pinging off a satellite over the ekwau tor, every hour. six pings in all. those pings only tell distance, not location. not even northern or southern hemisphere. but experts were able to use the last ping to plot position points and to spot where the jet would likely run out of fuel. connect the dots and because the earth is round, we get two arcs. our sources say it was most likely on this southern track that the plane went down. likely in the south indian ocean. far west of australia. australia now coordinating that search area. this morning, the malaysians said they're redirecting this search to the south but still asking their neighbors to the north to provide radar and satellite data. the malaysians also say they conducted a simulator run that confirms a 777 could have taken that strange course. one thing that seems clear, whoever was at the controls apparently knew what they were doing. >> if you're shutting off those systems intentionally, one reason is to vanish.

7:10 am
first off, we know it was the co-pilot who spoke the last words. what does that tell us? >> george the time line has been muddied about when these actions have been taken in the cockpit. but all the facts we've been talking about, all the premeditated actions. the change in course. the acars, turning off the transponders, all these premeditated actions still stand. it's interesting that the copilot did this. we're trying to to figure out who is the more likely suspect here if it is the crew members. and for the co-pilot to say something, they'll go back and look at the voices and look for stress in his voice to see did somebody have a gun at his head? was he being told to do something? but again, lots of little clues but we're still not there yet. >> you add to that the malaysian airlines officials are saying the two pilots did not request to fly together. >> right. so you can't say they were conspirators. finding a link between them has been fruitless so far. >> meantime they are looking into that flight simulator. what could that conceivably tell us? >> well a flight simulator has a computer hard drive on it.
7:11 am
you could go back and do some computer forensics and look at perhaps the pilot had preprogrammed some of these routes into that simulator. maybe he had test flown a rout if he was, in fact, responsible for this. they'll go back and do some standard computer forensics on that hard drive. >> and on the search now, it appears that the malaysians have been catching up to what we have been thinking the last few days that the focus really is on the south, not that northern land route. >> yeah, so, now that -- as our sources have been telling us for days, we'll shift to the south. you see that the australians are now responsible for that part of the search. but i think that we need to be careful here, george, because we're getting into that part of the mishap investigation where the facts, i think, will kind of continue to come to a halt, if not just to a trickle. so the facts, the science, we're not going to get too much more out of the satellites. they're going to have to do some on-the-ground forensics. we have to be careful not to do too much speculation. as we continue to look for the wreckage of that airplane.
