>> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. our marine layer was present extensive this morning. it's beginning to dissipate but we have clouds in the livermore valley as well as mountain view, san jose and santa rosa. we are milder in novato and a little cooler with numbers in the 50s at the san carlos airport and mountain view. but for the outlook, the rest of the afternoon we are looking at plenty of sunshine by noontime, into the 60s around the way. we will surpass our highs yesterday by a few degrees with numbers in the low to mid-70s around the bay. above average, dry, sunny. we will keep that forecast for tomorrow. but rain is returning to the bay area. a couple chances and they are much better chances a than we thought previously. i'll explain coming up in my accuweather seven-day forecast. carolyn. >> lisa, two people died in a crash in san leandro. the cars collided just before

11:00 last night. one person died at the seen. two people were taken to the hospital. one listed in serious condition. they have not been identified. streets were shut down while police investigated. no word yet if speed or alcohol may have played a role in that >> another security breach to tell you about. this time at a place most of us use at one time or another, the dmv. now millions of credit card numbers could be in the wrong hands. law enforcement authorities have alerted the dmv about the potential breach and now a warning is utility with anybody with a driver's license or registered vehicle in california. abc news reporter lillian kim has the details. >> first it was target, then neiman marcus and now it appears hackers may have targeted the california dmv. >> it's a little unfortunate, considering i was just at the dmv. >> the dmv is providing few details, saying only that the dmv has been notified by law

enforcement authorities of a potential security issue within their services. >> the cyber guys are out there looking for data they can sell and resell. >> michelle is chief privacy officer at mcafee. she said she's not surprised they target government entities like the dmv. >> government data it leveragable. so a break-in at the department of motor vehicle gets you a lot of good data. real home addresses, other real information related with government-issued documents. >> the agency said they are reviewing their systems and they will alert customers immediately if they find an issue, but in the meantime customers are told to to monitor their credit card statements for any usual activity. >> you think the dmv would have better security than that since they work for the state and they are part of the government. >> hopefully, you know, everything gets resolved soon because it's not good having everyone's personal information out there.

the potential breach could involve the information of millions of californians. as of january that were millions of licensed drivers and 24 million licensed drivers and 32 million licensed vehicles. abc7 news. >> this new breach comes just days after a break at ucsf. officials say the personal information of nearly 10,000 people may be compromised after computers were stolen from the school's medical center. so far there's no evidence anyone has tried to use the information. there are new details about friday night's officer-involved shooting in san francisco. we now know more about the man killed by a police officer at a poplar park. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the latest. >> i didn't like the fact i saw a guy with a gun, but he wasn't threatening. to me he seemed like a guy eating a burrito. >> but some of his neighbors did feel threatened and called police when they saw the armed man who has been identified as

28-year-old, a family member who did not want to be identified tells abc7 news that he was mentally ill and was carrying a taser and not a handgun. still, when authorities arrived, they say they approached the man, who then raised his weapon at them. >> it appears he drew the weapon and officers responded and shot him. >> probably five seconds of gunfire. really erratic like pop, pop, pop, pop. probably coming from multiple weapons. >> some nearby residents said they heard as many as 16 gunshots go off, but those who come to the park regularly can't believe the level of violence that erupted. >> scary that someone is carrying a gun in a park in a neighborhood that we live and he was shot and killed. >> i appear here with my 8-year-old daughter whenever i'm here and it's definitely care scary. >> to ease fears, the police chief plans hold a community meeting.

>> i asked the san francisco police about the claim from the family about the claim he was armed with a taser and not a handgun, but they refused to comment. abc7 news. san jose place are searching for a gunman who shot and wounded two men in a brazen attack yesterday afternoon. police say the man walked up to the men who were working on a car just before 2:00. words were exchanged, shots were fired, and the gunman jumped into a waiting car. the victims, 19 and 24 years old, are expected to survive. happening today, there will be a charity workout fundraiser in honor of a bart police officer killed in the line of duty. sergeant tommy smith died after he was accidentally shot by a fellow officer during a probation search in dublin on january 21st. today's cross-fit style hero workout is open to people of all fitness levels. there will be a silent auction, raffle and food. proceeds benefits his family. there's no set registration fee

to participate, although $40 is recommended. the charity workout gets underway at 9:00 this morning at the cross-fit in union city. a warning this morning for drivers who speed down the streets of walnut creek. the city's traffic police are making a comeback. according to our media partner, "the contra costa times" the motor traffic team will hit the streets again. officials said they saw a spike in accidents last year due in part to a drop in traffic enforcements. budget cuts and low staffing levels were to blame but the department is once again fully staffed. other changes coming include more officer training and putting officers back in schools. now to the latest on the search for malaysian flight 370. officials if in malaysia say

they received new information from the french government showing objects in the ocean. abc david curley has more from washington. >> today a total of eight aircraft criss-crossing the search area, including four commercial jets. the crew trying to eyeball debris on the surface of the rough indian ocean based on the latest satellite images. chinese photos see something 75 miles from the first pictures and now the french pictures. >> we have now had a number of very credible leads. there is increasing hope. no more than hope. no more than hope that we might be on the road to discovering what did happen to this ill-fated aircraft. >> the photos, taken days apart, were days old when they were released. with drama, the malaysians

>> it appears russia's control of ukraine only submarine is complete. they took down all the ukrainian navy insignia from the vessel. a russian navy flag now waves in front of the sub. it was following a controversial referendum that proud an overwhelming votes in favor of the region leaving ukraine to join russia. there are questions this morning about how ukraine will respond as pro russian forces continue to ambush parts of crimea. ukraine's foreign minister spoke with abcs martha raditz today on "this week." he said russian press's intentions are not clear and the chances of going to war are now growing. this after armed russian vehicles broke into an airbase in cry mia yesterday. >> we don't know what putin has in his mind and what would be

his decision. that's why the situation is becoming even more explosive than it used to be a week ago. >> however, ukraine's foreign minister said the country is ready to respond diplomatically and also with sanctions if russian forces move into ukraine's eastern borders. in southern california, investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a recycling plant that started last night. bundles of plastic caught the building itself did not burn. between 75 and 80 firefighters battled those flames. a haz mat team was also called to the scene. there are no reports of injuries. three elephants escaped from a circus in missouri yesterday, damaging cars before being recaptured. someone in a car took pictures with a cell phone. the first shows a parking lot and something big in the distance. we highlighted the elephant in the picture.

slightly warmer day today. live doppler 7hd, you see a little bit of low cloudiness in marin county. here's a look at san jose and the cloud cover. it was a little milder in spots this morning due to some of that insulation. 50s in the south bay, as well as half moon bay. 51 in the city. oakland, the mild spot at 56 degrees. here's a look at emeryville. looking pretty good this sunday morning. 52 by the delta. and it's cloudy in livermore. santa rosa, the cool spot 45. we are looking at another warmer than average day today up in the north bay. here's mt. tam where you can see the marine layer. but it is compressed." higher pressure continues to build in off the coast. so that will provide a little bit of warming today, tomorrow and, yes, on tuesday about into wednesday. only a rainy day, but this is a cold system. we could see a thunderstorm. we will see some sierra snow down to the valley floor. and then another system looks even wetter by next weekend. so here's a look at high

pressure, which is just building in enough to bring us some warming through the 70s today. and we really should see upper 60s for the warmest north and south bay locations. so we are above average. this system misses us but there's several on top that will bring us a little bit of a dent in our rainfall deficit. so here is tuesday morning. 9:00. the north bay, wet. this pushes on through. we will see some showers in the south bay. then by wednesday we are looking at yet another wet weather maker. you can see the snow in the sierra nevada. maybe four to six inches. the valley floor. if we take it out further into the first couple of days of april, this is beyond next weekend, take a look. we are in the lighter green here and even some darker green well to the north. that puts us over perhaps an additional inch, maybe a little more through that time period. so definitely some good news. not going to dig us out of our huge deficit but still welcome rain and we will take t75 in

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. starting with a visible picture showing the low clouds of that moved into the south bay. also the east bay. and beginning to scour out in the north bay. that will be the rule throughout the rest of the morning hours and the afternoon. so pretty soon we will be mostly sun my and temperature-wise very similar to yesterday. in fact, more 70s return to our east bay valleys, the south bay, and just about 70 over in oakland. so we have a couple of dry days before some much-needed rain comes our way. we will talk about it coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. in developing news from overnight, we are now sees the first pictures from the massive

and lethal mudslide in rural washington state. three people were killed when a huge chunk of a hill came loose, rumbling down directly into homes w cries of helping coming from the debris, rescue crews are now scrambling to try to save lives. abc news has the latest. >>. >> reporter: from above you get a sense how enormous this slide it. it was just about 11:00 a.m. when the wall of mud and trees a quarter mile wide raced down a hillside in this rural community and across state without 530 where pal low was driving. >> i was the third car behind a truck with a boat. that's when i saw the darkness washing everything off the road. >> an estimated 30 houses were caught in the slide and either smashed by the force of it or pushed along like play things. >> we have people that are yelling for our help and we are going to make -- we are going to take extreme risks to try to get hem out of there.

is dead and several injured after a schultz bus overturned near washington, d.c. the 16 passenger bus crashed after 3:00 this morning along interstate 95 in fairfax county, virginia. authorities say the driver was trying to avoid hitting a car that had swerved at a high rate of speed into the bus lane. the bus veered off the interstate, hit a guard rail and then overturned. authorities are looking now for that other driver. there will be no more same sex marriages in michigan, at least for now. be a federal appeals court suspended them yesterday, one day after a lower court judge overturned its ban on same-sex marriage. several hundred couples lined up yesterday morning for licenses and got hitched before the court reinstituted the ban. the sixth circuit court of appeals said it issued the stay through wednesday for more time to consider friday's ruling. former secretary of state hillary clinton is speaking out about the importance of education.

last night clinton, husband bill and daughter chelsea were together on stage at southwest -- arizona state university. earlier the former first lady spoke as part of their clinton global university saying education is essential. >> it remains the root out of poverty and into a better life with a rising income. it is the key to whether or not girls and women will have the chance to occupy their rightful places and assume responsibilities in their societies. >> today former president bill clinton and chelsea will hold a day of action in downtown phoenix to highlight community service. on tuesday most california public school students will take an assessment test they have never taken before. this one will replace the old star test. it will now be called the smarter balanced field test. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez has a look.

>> imagine a world where students take a paperless test to measure their achievement n california that test will be launched in a few days. these students at james middle school in san francisco have been doing practice runs ahead of the test called the smarter balanced field test. >> you get to try it out before you actually do it. >> i also like it because there's no waste of paper. >> here's what the test will look like. some of the questions are like the old star test. multiple choice. others will ask you to drag and drop the answer in the correct box. draw your answer or write the answer or fill in the blank. >> it's now in two parts. what's the best answer to this one? and now say why. >> only this year students will not receive an individual score. that also means for the first time in years the state will not hold schools accountable for how

well a student performs like it did with the no child left behind act. but it starts counting next year. this allows school districts to make sure their network is fast enough and able to handle all the students at their schools. think of it as a fire drill. also, the results of the tests will be used to see if the questions are good enough to be used on the test next year. >> the students, through their interaction with the computer, will be saying weather they are able to navigate an item and whether they are able to answer it correctly or not. >> i am going to learn a lot more about computers and how to use them. >> it feels the same as taking the test on paper for me. >> parents may want to know more about the test. you can get this information at the california department of education's website at www.cde.ca.gov. >> it will be given to students in grades three through eight, and in high school only to eleventh graders.

in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> a new medical alert this morning about women and strokes. a new study finds women say they would quickly call 911 if they knew they were having a stroke. the problem is they don't often recognize the symptoms. stroke is the third leading cause of death for women in the united states, but the new study finds only about 20% of us are able to identify sudden severe headaches, unexplained dizziness and loss of vision as warning signs. and 1 in 5 were unable to identify a single symptom. >> i would have just thought maybe i was under a lot of stress. >> i don't think i would consider a stroke as a factor. >> this study appears in the american heart association journal "stroke." stanford hospital will likely pay more than $4 million to settle a class action claim alleging it violated patient privacy. our media partner "the mercury news" reports a settlement was tentatively approved wednesday

>> well, it looks as though river otters are back at lake tahoe. they are reporting sightings at the mammals. a woman at the wildlife care center said it's been 25 years since she's heard of a otter sighting in the area. river otters have been known to live in the tahoe basin for decades but this is the first time they have been seen at the lake. so the otters are back and so is the snow for lake tahoe. >> that's right, by tuesday they are looking at snow. right now the fog continues to dissipate around the bay. here's our sutro camera. temperatures in the low 50s,

a beautiful shot here of our iconic coit tower. 65 degrees for san francisco today. lisa argen will be along in 30 seconds or less with your accuweather forecast. today and tomorrow are the final two days of a mortgage relief event for struggling homeowners facing are the neighborhood assistance corporation of america, no one as naca, brings together helpedders and financially strapped home openers with knack ka as the go between. it's held at the marriott city center at oakland. lenders usually make a decision about whether to modify a troubled mortgage on the same day. there's no cost to the homeowner. naca said about 80% of homeowners wind up getting some sort of relief. it runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. >> we are getting relief in terms of our deficit coming this

week and perhaps next weekend. we take a look at live doppler 7hd right now. you see the low clouds and fog that are banked up along the coast. still stubborn up in parts of marin county down through the south bay, santa clara valley and a little bit over into the east bay. these will continue to scour out and we will have a mostly sunny day today. here's san jose right now with temperatures mainly in the 50s. the low 50s for the most part. but oakland sits at 56. 50 in san jose, as well as los gatos, and 53 on the coast. emeryville, nice-looking shot as we get into more sunshine this morning. 52 by the delta. 49 with the clouds in livermore and santa rosa sitting at 47, as well as napa. mt. tam looking at sunshine above that marine layer. we will see a mostly sunny day here. fur along the coast you will feel the sea breeze. temperatures coming up a few degrees today and tomorrow as the ridge gets a little closer. then rain arrives tuesday and

cooler conditions into wednesday, as well. this is going to be a cold one. we could see even the possibility of a thunderstorm. so we are out ahead of the system with a ridge of high pressure protecting us. as it builds a little bit, we will see some slight warming today and tomorrow. then the trough comes through and we are looking at temperatures cooler. in terms of tomorrow in oakland, you will have temperatures almost as mild as today. upper 60s. but when the system or a couple systems come through tuesday and wednesday, numbers dropping to below average. then we will come up a little bit. and the next system looks like it's going to come in on sunday, bringing more generous rain and cool conditions. so fog remains patchy along the coast throughout the day tomorrow. monday it will be dry and nice. but here we are at 9:00 in the morning north bay looking at some rain. as we go through the afternoon on tuesday it sweeps through the eastern half and southern portion of the bay. even southern california could

see some rain. by wednesday, 4:00, we have the snow in the sierra. this will be a cold system and we will see the snow down to lake level. this pushes on through and we will get a little bit of break after that before another stronger system looks like it's going to head our way second half of next weekend. today, though, looks and feels like summer parts of the bay with low 80s from sacramento to fresno. mid-60ths keeping it cool along the coast. partly cloudy in los angeles at 70. we will see more temperatures in the low 70s from fremont today. san rafael, and palo alto look for a high of 70 with 73 in san jose. morgan hill 75. santa cruz it will be cool in the upper 60s and in the north bay low 70s for you, as we. not much of a change tomorrow. then here comes the clouds, the scattered showers tuesday with more rain on wednesday. lingering through thursday and we will see a little bump up in temperatures before the next system arrives by the end of next weekend. so this is the best-looking seven-day we've seen in quite some time. >> some people had given up
