>> and i'm marci gonzalez in for diana perez. flight 370 will not be found for at least another day after bad weather stopped the search. >> here's the headline in a malaysian newspaper, the darkened front page shows a plane above the words "good night, mh370." >> the malaysian prime minister says there is no doubt the plane crashed into the indian ocean with no survivors. abc's clayton sandell has the latest from perth, australia. >> reporter: it's been a cloudy, rainy day here in perth, australia, but 1500 miles offshore, the weather is so bad that the air and sea search for malaysia 370 is now on hold. today all of the search planes here are grounded. the search for any sign of that missing boeing 777 is having to wait as a storm system passes through a search area that stretches across one of the most remote and unforgiving places on earth. winds are forecast to be 50 miles an hour. even ships in the area are being moved out of the worst rough seas with swells around 13

feet. now, that includes the australian navy ship the "success." now, this is the vessel that was sent yesterday to investigate two objects floating in the water that had been seen from the air but they could not find them. >> we're not searching for a needle in a haystack. we're still trying to define where the haystack is. >> reporter: and the malaysian government says a new analysis of electronic pings sent from the plane and picked up by a satellite can only lead them to conclude that the 239 people on board all died when it crashed into the southern indian ocean. those officials held a press conference in kuala lumpur just a short time ago. >> but after 17 days, the announcement made last night and shared with the families is the reality that we must face and we now must assess. >> reporter: now officials tell us they hope to get those planes back in the air, those ships back in the target zone in the next 24 hours if the weather clears. clayton sandell, abc news, perth, australia.

>> and without actual physical evidence, some of the passengers' families are finding it hard to accept that their loved ones are gone. >> relatives of the chinese passengers staged a protest outside the malaysian embassy in beijing today claiming officials lied to them. >> abc's bob woodruff reports on the reaction in malaysia. >> reporter: this has been so emotional, as you can imagine, for the families here in kuala lumpur and in beijing, as well. they've been waiting for this information for the last 17 days. now finally some of those details are coming out. the sad thing is that some of these family members are furious that they got this news that their loved ones perhaps did not survive just before the prime minister's official announcement. they sent out a text message sent by the malaysia airlines to their cell phones. the families that i know just really couldn't stop from crying. it was unleashing so much anger up in beijing, as well. more subtle down here in malaysia, but now some of these families could be taken down to perth, australia, by the airline.

clearly the search for the plane and the bodies are going to step up, and hopefully this will come to an end fairly soon in terms of the search. >> all right, bob woodruff reporting from kuala lumpur. thank you. >> and stay with abc news for any new developments in the search for flight 370. the very latest coming up on "good morning america." moving on to some breaking news overnight, two people killed in a shooting incident at norfolk naval station in virginia. reports say that one navy sailor and one civilian are dead. there were no other reported injuries. the base was briefly put on lockdown as a precaution, but that has since been lifted and the whole episode is being investigated. and now to washington state's tragic deadly landslide. >> the death toll now stands at 14, and the total number of people that are missing has shot up to 176. search and rescue teams are fighting against time trying to locate the victims of the sudden disaster that unfolded in just a matter of moments. abc's akiko fujita has the latest. >> everything is gone. the houses are gone.

>> are there any injuries? >> yes, there are people yelling for help. >> reporter: frantic calls to 911 describe the chaos that unfolded saturday morning. half a mountain wiping out this rural community burying homes underneath. the debris field stretching 4500 feet across, the mud on the ground, more than three stories high in some neighborhoods. these google images show the scope of the devastation. communities once dotted by homes to the left of the river now nothing but mud. >> this is one of the biggest landslides i've seen. there is still some movement on the landslide, and so that is something that we're trying to get a better handle on. >> reporter: the search for survivors hampered by conditions on the ground. >> it's muddy. in areas it's like quicksand. >> reporter: search crews haven't found any survivors since saturday. the head of emergency management says he doesn't expect to find any more considering all the time that's passed, but he added he's still hoping for a miracle.

akiko fujita, abc news, arlington, washington. the obama administration has a proposal to replace the nsa's dragnet collection of data about american phone calls. under the proposal phone records would remain only with the phone companies. the nsa could obtain specific phone call records only through a judge. congress would need to approve the policy after the administration was hit by harsh criticism by privacy advocates. president obama and european allies meeting in the netherlands have taken another step to further isolate russia over its actions in ukraine. for the latest, let's check in with abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: suspended, that's the message the u.s. and its international partners are sending to russia taking steps to exclude president putin from the g-8 and further isolate moscow. after talking for more than two hours in an emergency meeting, president obama and the g-7 leaders agreed to cut off russia's membership in the group of eight until moscow changes its course in ukraine. a summit meeting planned for sochi, russia, in june will now

be held in brussels without president putin, but just as the u.s. tries to turn up the heat on moscow, the russian military is adding to their forces on ukraine's border. u.s. officials tell abc news that russia now has 30,000 troops at the ready. the u.s. and its allies worried about further escalation warn russia it faces severe economic costs if it takes any more steps to destabilize ukraine. here in the netherlands president obama holds a press conference later today where he's sure to face questions about whether these new steps are enough to sway moscow to back off. meanwhile, the russians are downplaying the international snub. mary bruce, abc news, traveling with the president in the hague. at the murder trial of oscar pistorius a police cell phone forensics expert gets back on the stand this morning. during testimony yesterday a text message he revealed that pistorius' girlfriend reeva steenkamp had once told pistorius that she was scared of him. other texts that were read out in court proved both of them had insecurities. >> that you left -- that you

just left me after we got food to go talk to a guy, and i was standing tight behind you. i regard myself as a lady, and i didn't feel like one tonight after the way you treated me. >> now the expert did not reveal if police had recovered any messages from the night pistorius shot and killed steenkamp. pistorius claims he made a mistake that night thinking he was firing at an intruder. coast guard officials in texas are still testing the water before re-opening one of the nation's busiest shipping channels following a huge oil spill. dozens of ships have been stuck since saturday when a barge and a ship collided and spilled 170,000 gallons of thick oil. tar balls are washing up on galveston beaches, and more oil-covered birds have been found. all right, the big weather story today is snow, eastern new england, including cape cod, will get a blizzard starting tonight. there will be rain on the west coast and west texas today. >> milder temperatures in the west and southern plains, but below freezing in the upper plains and midwest. thrill seekers busted.

candy crush was the most downloaded free app and the top grossing app last year, but some analysts question whether king can maintain that pace. abc parent company disney is paying half a billion dollars for a youtube video supplier, maker studios. disney plans to use maker to put more of its existing content online and learn about how to relate to young consumers who get most of their video from the web. well, it is going to be harder to smoke them if you got them in the navy. sources say the department is about to ban tobacco sales on all of its bases and ships as part of a health and fitness campaign for the navy and possibly the marine corps, which is part of the navy department. 30% of u.s. troops smoke, 50% more than the civilian population. and more than three out of five employers say when they've contacted references, they've actually heard negative things about the candidates. career builder says that's why it's important to ask potential references if they would feel comfortable recommending you. what are they going to say, no. >> yeah.

francisco, miami and washington. well, three b.a.s.e. jumpers who parachuted from the tallest building in the country have been released on bail. >> this helmet cam video was posted on youtube last night showing the daring jump from one world trade center, the 104-story tower built at ground zero. it apparently took place september 30th in the middle of the night. their attorney insists the jump was not reckless, and he pointed to a lack of security. >> i can assume that the port authority police and the nypd is a little embarrassed by this whole situation. i'm hopeful that once we get into the courthouse, that the district attorney's office will take a more realistic view of this. a 16-year-old boy was arrested for climbing the skyscraper last week. officials say once the building is open, security will be ironclad. >> you might want to make it ironclad even before that. happening today in the chicago, the subway driver who was at the controls when that train derailed at o'hare

airport, he will discuss the incident with investigators. she, rather, has already told her union boss that she was extremely tired, may have dozed off just before that train jumped the tracks and scaled an escalator. 32 people were hurt. none suffered life-threatening injuries. former tough talking tv judge joe brown found himself in a tennessee jail cell. brown was in court yesterday representing a client in a custody hearing. he wound up with his own mug shot after going off on a judge because the case wasn't on the docket. >> if you want to get into this, let's get into this. this sorry operation needs to stop. >> 24 hours shelby county jail for contempt. >> well, apparently brown just kept on going and was eventually given a five-day jail sentence, but he was released later without bond. brown's show aired for 15 years but was canceled last year. he's running for district attorney in the county where he was arrested. well, an oklahoma city girl scout has broken the sales record for the most boxes of cookies ever sold.
