ikea. professional kitchen services at a low price. good morning, america. and happening now, the hunt for debris called off this morning. dangerous conditions ground planes as the search and rescue efforts become search and recovery. grieving families furious with the airline, calling them liars. there's like a mudslide. and everything's gone! the houses are gone! >> more than 100 people are feared missing in that deadly mudslide in washington state as search teams search in quicksand for survivors and aircraft sonar is used to aid in the rescue efforts. caught on camera, the jaw-dropping b.a.s.e. jump off the top of one world trade center, gliding through manhattan at night. how did they get to the top of one of the world's most secure buildings? we talked to the jumpers. and a red-hot night on
7:01 am
"dancing with the stars." "big time rush" star james maslow's salsa sent him to the top of the leaderboard, where he joined olympians meryl davis and charlie white. and a big twist from the judges, who sent home two couples. they're both here live this morning. and we do say good morning, america. on this tuesday morning. great to have josh by my side. george taking a little time off. amy here, as well. and the search is ongoing. one australian official said it best, we're not searching for a needle in a haystack. we're still trying to define where the haystack is. there are currently 12 aircraft and 1 vessel on site. four more on the way this morning. the airlines now offering the families compensation of $5,000 per victim. >> as the search really changed in its sense of technical precision.
7:02 am
the rough weather and that very remote part of the planet is causing officials to call off the search today. abc's david kerley following all of this from day one had all the developments overnight. david, good morning. >> good morning, josh. it's an armada of sorts. on its way right now. but the statement that all is lost changes this effort dramatically from a search and rescue effort to really ah hopefully a recovery of the remains of flight 370 which should be at the bottom of these two arrows. as if the situation wasn't bad enougher now the weather is keeping them from searching. after so many spottings of possible debris there was hope this morning that something would be recovered. still, nothing. with the malaysians admitting the 777 is at the bottom of the indian ocean. >> 17, 18 days for anyone to survive that long is extremely extremely remote. >> reporter: also new this morning, the malaysians say the flight, which had been in the air for 7 1/2 hours pinged the
7:03 am
satellite at 8:11 in the morning. these few clues gleaned from the satellite ping, fuel on board, glide patterns, and comparing flights on the same day led to the conclusion that the plane crashed into the rugal iged ind ocean. >> we can't give you a deaf fin active x -- definitive x marks the spot. we can give you a range in which to look, which is what the world's navies and aircraft are doing. >> reporter: while aircraft and invests search this area for debris, it is 350 to 700 miles to the west, these two plot lines that most likely spots where the majority of wreckage is on the ocean floor. searchers will create grids over these two areas and then listen for those black box pingers. >> we're not searching for a needle in a haystack. we're still trying to define where the haystack is. >> reporter: the u.s. navy's ping locater is on its way to australia at this hour. it will be put on board an australian vessel, but it won't
7:04 am
even leave port until april 4th. hear that, april 4th talking ten days from now. that's how this has changed to a much more technical methodical search. the urgency is gone since everybody is believed lost. once again, this grid, and this is where the pinger locaters will be under the water trying to find the black boxes, robin. >> okay, david. now to the grieving families. reality setting in after getting the crushing news. the sadness mixed with anger at the airlines for the way they have handled the tragedy. bob woodruff is there in kuala lumpur for us this morning. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i just got out of the press conference. the families were certainly hoping to hear more details about where that plane went and why it went down. but day did not get any of that today. but there was a very interesting financial offer from the airline. [ shouting ] with anger still on the streets, malaysia airlines declared today it would provide $5,000 to each of the victim's families. [ wailing ] that is compared to $25,000 granted by air france to its victims five years ago.
7:05 am
malaysia airlines is also criticized for telling the families about the tragedy simply through text messages just before the public announcement. today in beijing outside the hotel where families have lived for more than two weeks, protesters, against the airline and its government. >> we just want the truth. and if you make a conclusion, with no exact evidence, just from analysis from the satellite data, why you make that conclusion? >> reporter: outside the malaysian embassy relatives accuse them of being executioners. but in kuala lumpur, more prayers than protests. the family of patrick gomes, the chief steward on the flight, told me that they will continue to burn this candle so that his soul can find its way home. >> it brings us closure. if it's in the ocean it's final, you know. he comes back in a different way, which is not what we want.
7:06 am
>> reporter: now this morning in malaysia many of the towns and cities there are flying their flags half-mast in respect for the families and the victims. also a very moving front page here in the newspaper in kuala lumpur, you can see the plane in the darkness. goodnight, mh370. robin? josh? >> so hard to see. all right, bob, thank you. we bring in abc news aviation consultant colonel stephen ganyard. he's in washington with us this morning. and, steve, anything that's been released or revealed that will help investigators with all these theories as to what actually happened? >> not really, robin. i think the key yesterday was that we finally affirmed what we believed for probably a week to ten days now. and we came out and said, we know it's on the southern track. and if it was on the southern track, we know it only had so much gas. and there was no way it was going to make land. so i think this was more for the families and to move the search along with what we knew was actually the truth. and so, as david said, this is
7:07 am
now a recovery operation. it's not a rescue operation. >> and we hear what the australian investigators said we're not searching for a needle in the haystack we're still trying to determine where the haystack is. any new revelations as to where they're looking? >> it's still brutal. if we put it in the context we have been talking about the last couple of weeks, we're still looking at areas the size of alaska. it's just overwhelming. the task is just unbelievable. we've got a lot of ships. we've got a lot of planes out there. but i think what will happen is we will shift to look at the last known position of the aircraft before it hit the water. so instead of chasing debris i think that we're going to begin to focus on trying to estimate where the airplane was based on that last pinger hit, based on how much gas was in it and how far it might have traveled down range. so i think there will be a shift. it will be a little bit subtle. we won't go look for debris as much. but more looking for the bottom of the ocean. >> we did hear in david's report about the u.s. navy sending in a
7:08 am
black box locator. can you tell us a little bit more about what that entails? >> it looks like a stingray. it gets towed at very low depths behind a ship and it has hydrophones, microphones that will be listening for that pinger out there. hopefully finding the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean. >> even if the sound is no longer there after a couple of weeks, there's still a way to be able to find the box? >> well, there is. if we have a general idea, there's a thing called side-looking sonar the u.s. navy will also contribute to the effort. and what it does, it will make a black and white picture of the ground, of the seabed. so that you'll be able to see if there's debris on the seabed. but, again, we've got to get to the general area. we just cannot go out and search the whole south indian ocean and expect to find what we need to find. >> good point there. all right, steve, thank you very much. appreciate it. again, with that announcement from the malaysian prime minister yesterday, you just hope and want closure for these families. that's for sure. we turn now to that deadly mudslide in washington state. 14 people are confirmed dead at this hour.
7:09 am
while over 100 more remain unaccounted for. rescuers are now racing against time and in very dangerous conditions, as they still hope to find survivors in the debris. abc's neal karlinsky is in darrington, washington, this morning. good morning to you, neal. >> reporter: josh, good morning. the numbers really are worrisome out here. officially, 176 names on the list of those missing. they do not expect that number to hold. but it gives you a sense of how confusing things are out here. they really have no idea how many people were caught up in the slide. for the first time we're hearing the dramatic 911 calls. >> there's a mudslide and everything is gone! the houses are gone! >> reporter: the terror of the minutes right after the slide plowed through 30 homes and cars driving by. >> there's people yelling for help! >> my heart is shattered into a million pieces. i just want them to bring my daughter home. >> are you guys ready to go? >> reporter: 14 are now confirmed dead.
7:10 am
but authorities still don't know just how many people are missing and caught in the deadly debris. overnight the estimate jumped to 176 people unaccounted for, but officials say that number may include duplications. and it's expected to drop dramatically. at this hour, search teams are braving quicksand-like mud. 15 feet deep at times using aircraft, sonar, and avoiding a part of this hillside they've been warned to stay clear of because it is still on the move and unstable. >> it's very tough to even search those buildings. they've been collapsed and compressed with all of that material that's come down. >> reporter: there have been dramatic rescues, including this 4-year-old boy. the area is supposed to be closed off. but a few relentless residents have snuck in anyway including the kuntz family, who lost their aunt. she was found still trapped in her home. for so many in the small towns near the slide, it's the long list of the possibly missing and the unknown that's taking its toll. >> we're going to find her. >> buddy!
7:11 am
>> reporter: but next door, an unexpected gift. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: buddy, the family dog, is carried out alive. >> poor baby. probably needs a drink of water. >> reporter: today rescue crews have yet another obstacle to deal with. it's starting to rain. more rain is to come, making an already treacherous hillside at the much more unstable. josh and robin? >> just a staggering thing to consider when you see those images. >> so true. so true, josh. now to the video released overnight. three b.a.s.e. jumpers leaping off the top of one world trade center. the daredevils turning themselves in. and abc's gio benitez is in downtown manhattan for us. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. they say they did it for the thrill of it because of what this building means to them and to the nation. this morning a view like you've never seen before. >> everybody have a safe, good jump. >> reporter: watch as the three b.a.s.e. jumpers stand at the
7:12 am
top of the nation's tallest building, nervously sharing a last thought. and then, jump. it's the controversial and jaw-dropping video raising major questions. you see here their view as they plummet 104 floors from one of three daredevils who jumped off one world trade center in the middle of the night wearing cameras last september, sparking fears of terrorism. a lot of people might be watching this and they'll say, these guys are crazy. >> everybody has their thing. this is our thing. we were thinking very clearly that everything was working out for us to make a clean, safe jump. >> reporter: watch the daredevils first pray. >> thank you, baby jesus. >> dude. >> reporter: then they jump falling from 1,776 feet in the air. one b.a.s.e. jumper glides through downtown manhattan until reaching a deserted street and hides the parachute. this is supposed to be the most secure building on earth. that's what officials said. so how did you get in?
7:13 am
>> we found a spot where the cameras were not picking up. and there happened to be a hole in the fence there, as well. >> reporter: was there ever a moment that you thought this might be disrespectful? >> we had no intentions of being disrespectful to anybody. and we weren't trying to hurt anybody. >> reporter: an inside job. at the time, james brady was an iron worker at one world trade center and knew exactly where to enter. their stunt also caught on surveillance video which led police to the three jumpers and their lookout driver. overnight the four pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary, reckless endangerment and violation of the local law. they could face up to seven years in prison. and they say police told them they had to turn themselves in when a 16-year-old snuck in and climbed to the very top last week. now, port authority, which owns this site, says the spirit of respect and reverence for this sacred site was violated, robin? >> as you heard him say that's the same building where that
7:14 am
teenager just recently made it to the top. >> clearly some security issues to work out and perhaps more cameras to install. >> that would be a big help. let's get to amy now. other top stories developing. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with two shootings at a u.s. navy base forcing a lockdown. authorities say a civilian fatally shot a sailor on the "uss mahan." which is docked at the norfolk naval station if virginia. security forces then shot and killed that suspect. no word on a possible motive or how the civilian was able to access that ship. also, overnight we learned president obama about to unveil sweeping overhaul of the nsa program that collects information on virtually every phone call made in this country. under the new plan, the records will remain with the phone companies and the government will have to get a judge's permission to access those. the proposal must be approved then by congress and until then, the old program will stay in place. and new details in the general motors recall investigation. faulty ignition switches in compact cars are blamed now for

at least 12 deaths. and "the new york times" reporting data from the car's black boxes confirming the problem back in '09. but gm continued to insist it lacked proof that anything was wrong. the delay recalling those cars now the subject of a federal criminal investigation. the driver of the chicago subway train that derailed at o'hare airport says she was extremely tired from working overtime and may have dozed off before the train jumped those tracks and climbed an escalator. 32 people were injured. and in florida, a man doing some night fishing hooked this 14-foot, 700-pound hammerhead shark. look at that. he battled it for 90 minutes to reel it in before eventually releasing it back into deeper water, where hopefully it will stay. and finally, a big new step for the captain of our abc news ship, ben sherwood who has served as abc news president for three years, has been chosen to lead the entire network when anne sweeney steps down next

year. ben will become the next co-chairman of disney media networks and president of the disney/abc television group. congratulations to ben. i sent him an e-mail yesterday saying as much. 4:00 a.m., e-mails me back, thanks. the man never sleeps. >> one reason he got the job. we should give him a round of applause. [ applause ] >> congratulations, ben. >> let's do it how ben would do it. that's how ben always does it. >> he's a slow clapper. we love you. all right. what do you say we keep playing our game then, shall we? we're going to turn to the smash hit smartphone game candy crush, that has people everywhere hooked, including perhaps some folks at this desk. it is set to go public on wall street this week, giving the creators of the addictive app a very sweet payday. and abc's rebecca jarvis has the story. the millions of people who spent hundreds of hours trying to clear all the jelly, the game is just beginning. at least that's what king digital entertainment, the

uk-based company behind the deliciously addictediive game cy crush, is counting on. king is expected to become a public company tomorrow morning and will likely debut on the new york stock exchange at between $21 and $24 a share, meaning it would be an eye-popping $7.6 billion. >> for king it's a big deal in the sense it will raise a significant sum of money, perhaps upward of $300 million. >> reporter: it debuted in november 2012. topping farmville, texas hold 'em poker, bejeweled blitz and subway surfers. and now this morning, the game reportedly rakes in nearly $10 million a week. thanks to its more than half a billion users who play the game over a billion times each day. but in the world of fickle tastes and constantly changing obsessions, investors may not be as sweet on candy as its users. >> selling a fad product, the challenge is really, are you going to be able to turn that into hits going forward?
7:18 am
>> reporter: now you want to keep in mind companies like this, they do tend to trade very volatilely. so if you're going to invest in it, be prepared for that volatility. and if you're just learning about this game today, be prepared to be hooked. hooked on these little candies, guys. i got to get back to it, level 235. >> wow. >> wow. >> not bad at all. >> yeah. >> note to self, create an addictive game and sell it. >> for lots and lots of money. thanks, rebecca. let's get a check of the weather. i know we keep saying it is spring. but not springlike conditions. >> no, not at all. and some spring snow on the mendota bridge. we'll watch it one more time. this is caught on camera. that pileup because people there did the right thing, they get away from the pileup so that they can be safe. and they saw the rest of it. fortunately no one was seriously injured. that backup eventually cleared up. but that snow combines with a coastal storm and that's what we're talking about for washington, d.c., some light
