for the search for flight 370. >> ships and planes are moving away from the area that had been the center of the search for several days. >> they're now looking closer to australia as the investigation enters its third week. abc's nikki battiste filed this report from perth, australia. >> reporter: there is once again a new lead. said to be the most credible yet in the search for missing malaysian airlines flight 370. new data analysis moved today's search nearly 700 miles northeast. that's back to the original search area and it seems back to square one. with news of this latest lead today's recovery operation completely shifted its course. the search area changed based on continuing analysis of radar data before contact was lost. it indicates the aircraft was traveling faster than previously estimated resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance it traveled south into the indian ocean. satellites will move to take images of the new search area. right now ten aircraft and six

ships are all switching gears. the planes are now scouring this new location as they desperately look for any signs of debris from the missing plane. there is a heightened urgency and serious focus on finding two critical black boxes, indestructible they record crucial information that would help investigators reconstruct what went wrong. the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have beacons that send out pings. this batwing device looks for those pings, dragged behind a ship thousands of feet under the surface listening for those black box pingers. >> the signal comes up the cable and it's received by here. the pinger underwater sounds like this. >> reporter: a special towable listening device and high-tech sonar capabilities has arrived in perth from the u.s. vital to finding the black boxes, they will be loaded on to the royal australian navy's ocean shield and set out for the search area.

those two boxes only have two weeks of battery life yet and it will take those ships a couple of days to get there. for the searchers and families time is fading away. nikki battiste, abc news, perth, australia. well, investigators are expected to update the situation throughout the morning. >> stay with abc news for any new updates. we have live reports coming up on "good morning america." our other big story a powerful line of storms racing through the country and causing damage. >> take a look at the radar. it's clearly visible stretching across several states and will cause heavy rain, possible thunderstorms in the northeast coming up this weekend. >> and this is what that system is leaving behind in northern missouri. homes and barns shredded to pieces, roofs ripped off. a line of tornadoes ripping through that area. storm spotters say one of them was on the ground in the town of trenton for about six miles. for some it was a dangerously close call. >> i was downstairs and she was upstairs and she was lucky because roof started falling in on her and i'm screaming at her,

she got under the table though. >> powerful winds and hail as big as golf balls. some lost power but no reports of injuries. in washington state, the slow grim excavation of the deadly mudslide enters now its seventh day. officials are preparing the public for a big jump in the number of the dead and that announcement could come as early as it this morning. abc's akiko fujita has the latest. >> reporter: there's no time line on how long this search will continue. they're not calling this a recovery effort yet because they say the urgency to find these victims is still there. it's an exhaustive effort with few victories. >> it's kind of like forensic digging. >> reporter: crews comb through twisted piles of debris and dig through layers of mud. >> just mud, trees, underneath though there may be a house. some look like they've been put in a blender and dropped on the ground. >> reporter: officials say terrain has made it difficult to

dig the victims out even when they find the bodies. >> things kind of get somber out there. it gets really quiet for a few minutes. you can almost hear a pin drop out there. >> reporter: still, they continue the aggressive search like they have for nearly a week. knowing there are 90 families still waiting for loved ones to come home. this search is so complex. officials say in some cases they're calling on family members to come in and look for personal items belonging to the victims in that thick debris. the hope is those items will lead crews to the remains. john and diana. >> akiko, thank you. a new report says chris christie had nothing to do with what's being called bridgegate but came from a law firm hired by his administration. they ordered lane closures on the approaches to a heavily traveled bridge. christie told abc's diane sawyer he had nothing to do with what he calls an incredibly stupid

the referendum in crimea illegal but the u.n. vote is not legally binding. president obama met with the pope and italian politicians yesterday but took time out to announce a milestone for his health care reform. more than 6 million signed up for insurance in the new marketplace, 1 million in the past week. that could go higher before the monday deadline but still short of 7 million. nearly the entire chain of command at one of america's nuclear missile bases has been fired after a massive cheating scandal. the commander resigned after nine top officers were dismissed and 79 junior officers were disciplined. they were punished for not being aware of widespread cheating on regular proficiency tests. the base controls part of the u.s. arsenal of nuclear tipped missiles. this washington volunteers from a military veterans group planted 1,892 flags on the national mall. one for every vet who committed suicide just since january 1st. that's 22 sue sighs a day.

and welcome back. there's another recall alert over air bag problems. toyota says the air bags in almost 120,000 decade old avalons could inflate when they're not supposed to. only one minor injury has been reported and no crashes. earlier this week nissan issued a recall for air bags that would not inflate. toyota isn't sure when this will begin. all right. there's a new sign of a slowdown in the housing industry. pending home sales dropped a full percentage point for the last eight months. that's considered a key indicator of the volume. the national association of realtors blames the drop on the weather and expects a big improvement for the year overall. finally a version of microsoft office for the ipad. the software giant says it is committed to making the popular programs like word and outlook work on all major computing devices. android tablets are next but

ice on this lake in upstate new york, thousands and thousands of geese have decided to pay it a visit. what a sight when they take to the air. one of the regular spots or stops on their annual spring migration up north. >> amazing. roads are going to be wet for just about the entire east coast and some of the lower midwest and pacific northwest. watch for snow in idaho and northern rockies. if you're flying airport delays are possible in new orleans, houston, memphis and atlanta. all right, now to a sobering new report on autism. a new estimate is 1 in 68 children in this country has the disorder. >> that's a rise of about 30% in just two years. experts say there's an increase in awareness driving more families to act on concerns and more children with milder problems are being identified but the bigger question is autism becoming more common or more recognized and diagnosed. >> i'm afraid there's not going to be a simple answer to it. there's not a single explanation for this. it's likely to be many different things.

>> experts say that they're also getting better at identifying warning signs early. autism advocates were on capitol hill yesterday pushing lawmakers for a national strategy hoping to make it easier for families to get the help that they need. well, los angeles police say more arrests are likely after an undercover operation crackdown on baggage handlers at the city's main airport. six l.a.x. workers are already in custody for allegedly going through bags as they were sorted for loading on the planes. police say they pocketed anything they could sell on craigslist, especially electronics, jewelry, even clothes. a montana bride who pushed her husband off a cliff a week after their wedding has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. 22-year-old jordan graham offered a tearful apology to cody johnson's family in court, but the judge said he saw no remorse and didn't believe she was telling the truth. graham shoved johnson to his death last summer after having second thoughts about getting married. ray rice is in serious trouble because of an assault

charge. rice is charged with a simple assault accused of knocking out his fiancee at a casino last month. but a grand jury has returned a charge of aggravated assault which carries a three to five-year sentence. rice is denying any of these charges and his attorney says that the couple is now in counseling. moving on to march madness now, it continues tonight with four more games. last night the dayton flyers continued their underdog heroics this time against stanford. >> dayton won this by ten clinching their first trip to the elite eight since 1984. that set off a massive street celebration near the campus. fans gathering, maybe even making plans where they'll watch tomorrow night's big game. that's when dayton will face florida. last night's other winners were arizona and wisconsin. >> as for the pros, some of last night's highlights from espn. >> good morning, america. welcome to this "sportscenter" update. jay harris, kenny mayne. lots of march madness. you want to begin. >> oh, it's madness in a different way in the nba. >> oh, my bad.

so i'm kind of new here, but i've noticed a trend. my human does this funny thing where she goes around and gets all my toys, and then she hides them in that basket by the door. you know, it's always the same basket, and it's always in the same place, and then she acts so surprised when i find them, but, you know, she's putting them in the same basket again. it's like, hello? that's where you put it last time. you are the worst at hide-and-go-seek.

it will be warmer today than yesterday. >> now the traffic. can we make it through the commute? >> we can. happy friday, everyone. in walnut creek we have this accident in the northbound direction. it is blocking one lane. further to the south, northbound direction along 680, at stone valley we have another accident and that is blocking two lanes. we are looking at a couple of accidents so be careful. if you are continuing along highway 24 to make it to lafayette to the caldecott tunnel and oakland, everything is moving fine. across the san mateo bridge, traffic is light across the water to the peninsula. >> the state senate will vote to suspend their colleague, leland yee, arrested this week in an f.b.i. corruption sting. katie marzullo is outside his home in san francis.

we are talking about in a few hours at 9:00 a.m., the senate will vote on low land -- vote on leland yee's suspension, and he is not welcome, they say. if he does notary sign, he will be suspended. senator feinstein and boxer have called for his resignation. we spoke with a political strategist who says that one way or another, yee is finished. >> his political year is over. his freedom is in jeopardy. and the bottom line, as far as spending time in the senate, i don't see it happening or stepping foot in his office. >> he returned home to his house in the sunset district after posting $500,000 bond on wednesday. we kept an eye on the house yesterday and we saw delivers but no sign of yee. he is
