>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, march 30th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning to you. we have patchy fog in the north bay. otherwise still a few lingering showers in the higher elevations around the south bay, mountain view, woo acre looking at a little bit of activity here, down through 280. then south around morgan hill, 101 some showers in the hills. but these will continue to wine down and we will be looking at a pretty nice day today. a colder start, much colder, 16 degrees colder in santa rosa, and the afternoon calls for

partly sunny skies. and more rain, heavy rain arrives tomorrow. carolyn. >> thanks, lisa. we are finally getting the rain we've needed, but it has not been good for everyone in the bay area abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian reports from burlingame with a look at the problems yesterday storm's caused. [chainsawing] >> reporter: pg&e crews are work, as fast as at the can in the rain a tree limb fell on power limbs. the massive tree is also being trimmed because of it's proximity to the busy road game. they shut down southbound traffic in the area as a precaution. the saturated soil also cause this had tree to fall in the castro district. it came crashing down on to a house and pulled powerlines down along with it. heavy rain is the rain some baseball fans went home yet and

disappointed. after the final game in the bay bridge series was cancelled. the field was soaked. >> we need the rain very bad. we do. we need the a's to play too. >> very disappointed. we had a whole family planned today and we cancelled everything and here we are, rained out. >> coaches who used the a's clubhouse were also disappointed, not only because of the called-off game, but because of yet another sewage leak. the cell phone video was thought by third-base coach mike giago. water all over the floor. this is the fourth plumbing problem since june. and once they repaired the lines, power was back on to about 20 people early this morning. in burlingame, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> a tornado warning was issues in this county yesterday. you see the funnel cloud coming forming in this photograph from the national weather service. residents were warned to take shelter, but a tornado never did

touchdown. police say yet weather led to fatal car crash near sacramento. three cars hit a tree that had just fall nen citrus heights. one crashed into a utility pole and overturned while hitting the tree and one person was killed. in sierra the snow brought slippery conditions on the highways. chains are required this morning except on four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. and lots of snow is fallen at heavenly mountain resort in lake tahoe. snow is expected in the sierra through thursday. remember that you can track the rain in the bay area using live doppler 7hd on our abc7 news weather app. you can download it on our website, abc7news.com/apps. airport officials expect things to be back to normal today after

a computer glitch at san francisco international caused delay pass and a lot of frustration last night. the problems began early yesterday morning and led to huge backups for arriving international travelers. these are pictures of the long backup at customs. one woman from germany said she stood in line for two hours. well, there have been more than 100 aftershocks following friday night's 5.1 earthquake in southern california. it's the strongest quake to hit that area since 2008. there are no serious injuries, but the quake was strong enough to break watermains and damage buildings. here's abc7 news reporter amy powell from our sister station kabc with more. >> reporter: appointments were cancelled at this hair salon. the owner couldn't get inside her shop because the entrance was blocked by ceiling tile that is came down and much of the debris landing on sinks when

clients get their hair shampooed. >> everything was down and broken and glass. everywhere. >> and a few doors down the pizzeria sustained some damage but it's back in business. and they said the violence left large cracks in walls and ceilings inside the house and caused more damage outside. >> it will be a major job because the whole wall has to come down and be put back up. >> everything was a mess. everything fell down. >> the shaking knocked down chimneys on several nearby homes. some neighbors are dining and spending the evening together outdoors. >> today and last night we were here until about 2:00, 3:00 in the morning so might as well do it again. too scary to go back inside. >> you feel the aftershocks in the house. it's worse when you are inside. when you are outside you don't feel it as much. >> numerous aftershocks all night and day are keeping everyone on edge. >> scary. scary. we run every time. [laughter]

>> well, that was amy powell reporting. in fullerton, 20 red takinged department units were cleared for residents last night. another six homes still have not been deemed safe. it has been 23 days since malaysian airlines flight 370 disappeared and the number of days to track down the plane and the black box of ticking. the battery in the black box only lasts 30 days after a crash. a warship with a black box detecter is departing from australia today to join the search. yesterday crews plucked objects from the inian ocean to determine if they are connected with the plane. a chinese military plane also spotted red, white and orange objects floating in the play. some of the same colors on the interior of the plane. a fire raced through an apartment. marin county fire department got

the call yesterday. in less than half an hour the flames were out. red cross helped the family find shelter. another fire at that same building killed a woman and injured a man back in 2008. san francisco police are looking for the driver of this late-model honda. yesterday morning he left it here on clay street with a bullet hole in the driver's side door. an officer tried to stop the car on broadway after a license recognition system showed it to be stolen. the driver took off with the front door of the car hitting the officer's arm, causing him to fire his gun accidentally. that officer is okay. lisa argen here now talking about the accuweather forecast. >> a little built of a break. still some showers in the south bay, but we are looking at a stronger system headed our way tomorrow. today featuring the cooler temperatures. and a run of some sunshine. our numbers are in the 50s. i'll have a look at the rest of the weekend and a somewhat week ahead.

right now. 63 later today. what's happening in your neighborhood? lisa argen will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. quite a mess in tucson this morning after basketball fans went wild last night. tucson police pepper sprayed hundreds of people of a fans of the university of arizona basketball team got rowdy. the team lost in overtime in the ncaa tournament so fans took to the streets letting out their frustration. police say the evening started out calmly enough but later fans started throwing beer bottles and firecrackers at officers. they had to bring in extra units with batons to get the people to disburse. no one was hurt but 15 people were arrested. leland yee is accuse bid the federal government of an elaborate conspiracy of illegal

gun running and criminal corruption. lawmakers have called for his resignation. we have the details. >> reporter: lieutenant-governor adam added his voice to the voices to ask him to step down. >> i think the senator should resign not only for the benefit of himself and focus on his own problems, but the entire institution. >> the sins substitution is the california state senate, which has been rattled by the high profile arrest of yee. colleagues voted to suspend him along with two other state senators each on unrelated charges. they knew each other for years. they served as san francisco supervisors before he became mayor. he said his arrest is a shock. >> this is the exception, not the rule. fundamentally this is a sad day for all of us because it's all about public trust. >> the investigation this

unravels him involving "shimp boy" chow started years ago. he posted this picture on facebook. a photo newsone laughed off. >> as mayor i will take four or five hundred photos in any particular night. you do that for 17 years there is going to be a few folks, not just the one question that you think, boy, i really wish i didn't have that picture. >> state senator leland yee is specked in federal court monday. abc7 news. newsome spoke to abc7 news last night while attending the beyond differences fundraiser with his wife. it was at the marin art and garden center in ross. the nonprofit spotlights student leaders working to combat social isolation among teenage speakers to make middle school culture more inclusive. an east bay refinery will

pay a big fine for violating air quality standards. according to the air quality management district. law lay show put too much sulfur and carbon monoxide into the air in 2010. there were seven violations over a ten-day period. valero will pay a fine to settle the violations. long lines crowd add lineup event for health insurance yesterday. it's ahead of tomorrow's deadline for coverage california. the event at the community center in san jose helped with last-minute questions. you have until midnight tomorrow to start a covered california application and be eligible to finish that application by april 15th. those who do not have insurance are subject to a tax penalty about 1% of your income. secretary of state john kerry has arrived in paris for talks on the ukraine crisis. he is scheduled to meet with the russian foreign minister this

evening at the russian ambassador's home. abc7s george stephanopoulos will talk more about the crisis in ukraine and the u.s. response to russian president vladimir putin on" this week "and that's this morning at 8:00 on abc7. apple and samsung will return to federal court in san jose tomorrow over the rights of smartphone and tablet innovation. apple accuses samsung of continuing to copy key features from the i-phone and ipad in their recent products. this is the second trial in their global patent feud. apple won the first round against samsung back in 2012. samsung faces goes to $1 billion in damages as a result of that trial. are you a frequent flyer who dreads all airline fees? one was especially upset when they are mother died suddenly and she had to reschedule her

flight. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with her story. >> this woman of san leandro was looking forward to seeing her 93-year-old mom back in england. >> i was all set to have a wonderful visit. it was to be a family reunion of sorts. >> however, the happy event never happened. >> it came as a terrible shock when i got a phone call this said she very suddenly passed away. >> her mom died weeks before their reunion. bernadette had to get to england right away so she called virgin atlantic airlines to reschedule her flight. >> they said there would be no problem changing the dates but there would be a fee, $275 fee. >> however, virgin said it would refund that fee after she filled out a bereavement form. >> which i did upon my return and that's when my problems began. >> problems that she said went on for months. first she mailed in the form with the death certificate. but virgin did not refund the money. when she asked why, the airline said it needed more documents.

>> they required not just a death certificate, but a birth certificate and a marriage certificate to prove i was related to my mother. >> so she mailed in those, too. still, no refund. >> another month went by. i tried to get a hold of someone to speak to. and i was told i can no longer help you. >> so she copied all documents again and sent them all in again. virgin said it didn't receive them. >> i must have sent that death certificate in five times. the marriage certificates and the other certificates. >> next time she used certified mail. still no luck. >> it was the same story over and over again. we need more documents. we haven't received the original ones. >> bernadette didn't give up. she said it wasn't about the money, it was because the airline had promised no penalty for a daughter saying good-bye to her mom. >> if it women face outdated been something else i wouldn't have maybe felt it so deeply but

i just wanted to have it done right. >> she contacted 7 on your side. we contacted virgin atlantic. and it acted quickly. airline found the documents, determined they were in order and refunded her money, telling us unfortunately there was a delay in the refund as the correct documentation was not received at first. virgin atlantic worked closely with mrs. buchanan to ensure the correct paperwork was filed and a refund was expedited. >> i'm very grateful. >> virgin airlines said they require more%documents when the family members have different last name like bern it debt and her mother. they needed the marriage and birth certificate to prove they are mother and daughter. it seems harsh, but it is meant to prevent abuse. the 20th annual black woman's expo resumes this morning and wraps up in chicago. it's already drawn huge crowds as people are checking out the workshops, vendors and

entertainment offers. the keynote speaker you see there, good morning america anchor robin roberts. she offered advice on achieving personal and professional success. >> being big, dream big, but focus small. what are you going to do today? yeah, you are going to be here. that's a big step. this is what you are doing today. it's the day-to-day things that will get you to your ultimate goal. >> chicago's mayor stopped by to officially welcome roberts to chicago and praised her for being an inspiration during her battle with breast cancer. lisa is here. we had quite a bit of rain last week. what's happening starting now? >> well, starting now a little built of a break. still some showers around in the south bay and we are looking at a stronger system visiting us tomorrow which may impact the opening day for the a's. unfortunately this morning live doppler 7hd looking at some cool, unstable air filtering in

behind the front, mainly in the hills here to the south. so overall we are looking at some fog in the north bay, partly cloudy skies. and some downpours from time to time around mountain view, 280, higher elevations here just south of wood achier and redwood city. so watch out for that. and further south, highway 101 around morgan hill and in the hills here, looking at a little bit of rain coming your way this morning. things will quiet down and we will be looking at some cooler temperatures today with the brief break before the stronger system heads our way. so over an in inch rain in san rafael, and ben loamen with a quarter in inch san jose. these are 24 hour rainfall totals. .8 in oakland and livermore just over a tenth of inch of rain. the exploratorium camera, partly cloudy skies up ander 40s in redwood city and 51 san francisco and half moon bay. cooler in the north bay where the dewpoints are lower. we are looking at about a

quarter mile visibility santa rosa. good morning, 40 for you. 41 petaluma with 45 in concord. cool temperatures over into the east bay. livermore coming in at 46. so here's what i mean. from mountain view to san jose you are cooler even with the cloud cover and some showers this morning. but more so in the north and east bay with at least 10 to even 16 degrees of cooling this morning. so we will look for the fog, the chillier air, some scattered showers this morning and then sunny breaks throughout the day today. heavy rain heads our way tomorrow. this should happen after the morning commute. but mess up the evening commute. and winds gusting anywhere from 30 to 40 miles an hour. so yesterday's front pushed on through and really lasted throughout much of the day. still some leftover showers but we will be looking at a break today. and our next system cueing up. so here's the timing throughout the afternoon today with a few pop-up showers perhaps in the higher elevations, but overall

we are looking at 11:00 tomorrow in the north bay. this one colder system snow levels down to about 3500 feet. lake county looking at perhaps maybe some wet snow there. here we are 3:00 in the afternoon. the cold front pushes through. brief heavy downpours and then we will get a little bit of a break overnight on monday. tuesday morning, though, we are still wet and looking at showers throughout the afternoon commute, lingering into wednesday. so the first half of the week cool and unstable. high temperatures today in the low 60s. partly cloudy skies throughout the afternoon. 62 in napa. and the accuweather seven-day forecast so a brief break today after some showers in the south bay. then here comes the rain. heavy rain monday. tuesday april showers, maybe a thunderstorm lingering into wednesday. rest of the week, though, looks dry. abc7 news has another great weather resource for you to follow, that's following live doppler 7hd on twitter for the latest weather conditions.

and also gilroy, san martin. so a closer look right now. you will notice south of mountain view, looking at a little bit of rain showers here and heavier downpours. and further south, this is moving out of los gatos and just parallel to highway 101. so still some isolated showers this morning, but we are behind the front with some cool, unstable air. fog in the north bay. temperatures have dropped to near 40 there and elsewhere 50 where we have the rain showers and the cloudiness. so still a little bit unstable, cool fog by the afternoon we will call it partly cloudy and the temperatures in the 60s for the warmest locks. still an isolated showers with cool numbers coastside. low to mid-60s elsewhere w he are still looking for a pretty strong system to head our way tomorrow. details and timing coming up. >> thank you, lisa. 8 days after the devastating mudslide in washington state, the death toll continues to climb. 18 people are now confirmed

dead. the number of missing has been reduced to 30 after some, who were believed to be missing, have now been accounted for. abc news reporter michelle has the latest. >> reporter: people across washington paused, and for the first time since that mountain had an avalanche of mud and debris on the community below, one week ago saturday all activity at the site halted. >> they have identified one more victim, bringing the total of confirmed fatalities to 18. we also know that rescuers discovered one i additional victim in the debris field. that victim has not yet been identified. >> brenda neil got the news she was dreading about her husband, steve. >> i creamed and i cried and my daughter, we wrapped ourselves up together and just cried about how it's not fair.

>> families side by side with search crews sifting through mounds of mud again and again. >> this has a follow on everybody. there is no one out here that hasn't been touched by the magnitude of what is going on. >> they are filling black bags with personal items, wallets, pictures, safes, anything they kept in their homes and taking them to centers for processing. friday's rain continued into the weekend, turning the mud on the ground into even more of a craig mire. the search and rescue presses on. the hope of finding anybody alive is fading. >> we always want to hold out hope but i think we have to at some point expect the worse. >> michelle franson, abc news, new york. >> the family and friends of a pleasant hill teenager who was put into a coma after a skateboarding accident are raising money for his medical care. 18-year-old ryan carroll was skateboarding in santa bash are you when he fell and hit his head. he suffered a skull fracture and swelling to the brain and is in

a millionly-induced coma. he graduated last spring and was in santa barbara attending a community college. he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. a website has been set up by the family for donations to help cover his medical expenses. new this morning, fresno place say an adult's decision to perform cpr on two babies who nearly drown may have saved both lives. the one-year-old boy and girl were taken to a hospital yesterday after falling into a fishpond at an apartment complex. police say the kids were playing in a rear patio with other children when they got out of a fenced-in area and fell into the water. authorities also say someone found them underwater and started what is called rescue breathing until help arrived. >> it's fantastic. and it doesn't require much. rescue breathing. i think they did some compressions too because they were spitting up some of the water from the pond also and vomiting in addition.

if you have a pool, you have to be extremely careful if you have children. you have to watch them all the time. >> police say the children were under water for up to two minutes. authorities say at this point no criminal charges will be filed. five original rosie the riveters from the bay area are in washington, d.c. this morning to meet vice president joe biden at the white house. virgin america gave these iconic leads a red carpet send-off yesterday morning with a swing dance and a free flight to the nation's capitol. they represent american women who worked, in fact,ory and in ship wards during world war ii, producing supplies for the military while the men were away at service. >> these women were trail blazers for those of us who came after. in the air line industry we call this an unmanned flight. at the kaiser ship yards in the city of richmond. they have been pegsing elected officials since 2008 to recognize the contributions of rosies to america and its history. for now tesla will be able to sell cars in new york although they may have to set up dealerships some way. tesla and the automobile association reached a deal over five tesla stores currently open in the new york area. dealerships claim the stores are illegal because they sell directly to customers, while other automakers rely on independently-owned dealers to sell their cars. it means tesla will be able to keep the stores open, but any new stores in new york will have to be run by independent dealerships. tesla contends it needs specialized selltories explain the benefits of more expensive electric vehicles. defense and space contractor lockheed martin is continuing to

invest in a new research facility in silicon valley, even though it went through major layoffs late last year. the new palo alto center was dedicated last week. abc7 news business and technology reporter david louie got a rare look inside the labs. >> all right. go for it. >> reporter: about the only thing low tech about the new research lab is the way it was dedicated. it replaces three vintage buildings built almost 60 years ago when they tried to attract private companies to collaborate in independent rye search efforts. 100 scientists and support staff will be consolidated under one roof. the building so energy efficient it will save lockheed martin $1 million a year. >> silicon valley is the en ovation center of the world so it's important we are here. we intend to retain our talent and we intend to attract more talent which having the new

facility is important to us. >> they will continue to focus on technology for space projects that are lighter, and he shows us an example. the clips as youd on space crafts designed to replace ones made fromma lime numb. >> this particular aluminum part takes 28 days to get through the machines. we mid-300 in one working day at approximately one-tenth the cost. >> the development of the titanium propellent tank designed for high pressure might some day have use in the oil and gas pipeline describe. it's designed to encourage separate teams to collaborate together. the palo alto mayor nancy sheppard said more companies are tearing down old buildings in favor of energy efficient ones for good reason. >> you either write a check for money or you get to have more money for what you want to do.

on this scale. >> right on. >> the first of millions of baby chinook salmon are being trucked from the fish hatchery in far northern california for release into the delta. >> it is bypassing in some cases over 200 miles of river habitat to get them away from some of the stress sorts of high water temperatures, low river flows and increased exposure to predatory fish. >> the danger this year are entirely due to the drought. one that allows these tiny fish to travel on their own far too dangerous. >> condition necessary the river right now are not favorable to releasing of these fish. so we have now decided we are going to truck all of them, the state's fall-run chinook. >> this operation will continue for the next two and a half months. 240 truck runs, as many as 30 million fish from state and federal hatcheries.

certainly a chillier start. emeryville this morning where we are looking at partly cloudy skies and the fog and isolated showers. sunny breaks today. sunny, and wind heads our way tomorrow. this is the system that passed our way yesterday. a few lingering showers in the unstable air mass. this front is cueing up in an area of low pressure that is going to move on in here pretty quickly and bring some heavy downpours tomorrow with a much, much colder air mass and low snow levels. throughout the day today notice we will look for breaks in the clouds. 11:00 tomorrow the north bay looks wet. clover dill and santa rosa some light showers beginning, but the real emphasis and the front, the heavy downpours by the middle of the afternoon. take a look at that. 3:00. then right on through the evening. commute, the overnight hours, a few breaks but into tuesday morning here comes the low. we are looking at the possibility of some thunderstorms and rain showers right on through tuesday.
