>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, march 30th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, we are having some rain. behind it cool, unstable air. we will see the cumulus clouds build over the higher elevations and temperatures are dropping. quarter mile visibility. a view leftover showers from mountain view to san jose. temperatures in the upper 40s to 50s there. the rest of the afternoon we are looking at partly cloudy skies with cool numbers coastside,

mid-up ander 50s. elsewhere low and mid-60s. a little cool for this time of year. we will talk about april showers and the chance of a thunderstorm and that includes a pretty strong cold front coming our way tomorrow. details in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. as you say, we are finally getting the reunion we need, but it has not been good for everybody in the bay abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian reports from burlingame with a look at the problems yesterday storm's caused. [chainsawing] >> reporter: pg&e crews are working as fast as at the can in the rain a tree limb fell on power limbs. the massive tree is also being trimmed because of it's proximity to the busy road game. as a precaution, burlingame police dthey shut down southbound

shut down southbound traffic in the area as a precaution. the saturated soil also cause this had tree to fall in the castro district. it came crashing down on to a house and pulled powerlines down along with it. heavy rain is the reason some baseball fans went home yet and disappointed. after the final game in the bay bridge series was cancelled. the field was soaked. >> we need the rain very bad. we do. we need the a's to play too. >> very disappointed. we had a whole family planned today and we cancelled everything and here we are, rained out. >> coaches who used the a's clubhouse were also disappointed, not only because of the called-off game, but because of yet another sewage leak. the cell phone video was thought -- shot by third-base coach mike giago. water all over the floor. this is the fourth plumbing problem since june. and once pg&e repaired the

lines, power was back on to about 20 people early this morning. in burlingame, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> a tornado warning was issued in this county yesterday. you see the funnel cloud forming in this photograph from the national weather service. residents were warned to take shelter, but a tornado never did touchdown. police say yet weather led to fatal car crash near sacramento. three cars slamming into a tree that had just fallen in citrus heights. one crashed into a utility pole and overturned while hitting the tree and one person was killed. in the sierra the snow brought slippery conditions on the highways. this morning chains are required this morning except on four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. and lots of snow is fallen at heavenly mountain resort in lake tahoe. snow is expected in the sierra through thursday. remember that you can track the rain in the bay area using live doppler 7hd on our abc7 news weather app.

you can download it on our website, abc7news.com/apps. airport officials expect things to be back to normal today after a computer glitch at san francisco international caused delay pass and a lot of frustration last night. the problems began early yesterday morning and led to huge backups for arriving international travelers. these are pictures of the long backup at customs. one woman from germany said she stood in line for two hours. well, there have been more than 100 aftershocks following friday night's 5.1 earthquake in southern california. it's the strongest quake to hit that area since 2008. there are no serious injuries, but the quake was strong enough to break watermains and damage buildings. here's abc7 news reporter amy powell from our sister station kabc with more. >> reporter: appointments were

cancelled at this hair salon. the owner couldn't get inside her shop because the entrance was blocked by ceiling tile that came down and much of the debris landing on sinks when clients get their hair shampooed. >> everything was down and broken and glass. everywhere. >> and a few doors down the blackjack pizzeria sustained some damage but it's back in business. and they said the violence left large cracks in walls and ceilings inside the house and caused more damage outside. >> it will be a major job because the whole wall has to come down and be put back up. >> everything was a mess. everything fell down. >> the shaking knocked down chimneys on several nearby homes. some neighbors are dining and spending the evening together outdoors. >> today and last night we were here until about 2:00, 3:00 in the morning so might as well do it again. too scary to go back inside. >> you feel the aftershocks in the house. it's worse when you are inside.

you can feel it. when you are outside you don't feel it as much. >> numerous aftershocks all night and day are keeping everyone on edge. >> scary. scary. we run every time. [laughter] >> well, that was amy powell reporting. in fullerton, 20 red-tagged apartment units were cleared for residents last night. another six homes still have not been deemed safe. it has been 23 days since malaysian airlines flight 370 disappeared and the number of days to track down the plane and the black box are ticking. the battery in the black box only lasts 30 days after a crash. a warship with a black box detecter is departing from australia today to join the search. meanwhile australian officials announced this morning search crews have spotted four or average objects in the water longer than six feet. so word yet if the objects are related to the missing plane.

>> a family and their pets are saying elsewhere after a fire raced through their apartment. marin county fire department got the call yesterday. in less than half an hour the flames were out. the red cross helped the family find shelter. another fire at that same building killed a woman and injured a man back in 2008. san francisco police are looking for the driver of this late-model honda. yesterday morning he left it here on clay street with a bullet hole in the driver's side door. an officer tried to stop the car on broadway after a license recognition system showed it to be stolen. the driver took off with the front door of the car hitting the officer's arm, causing him to accidentally fire his gun. that officer is okay.

>> quite aness tucson after basketball fans went wild last night. the police pepper praised the rowdy people of a fans got rowdy. the team lost in overtime in the ncaa tournament so fans took to the streets letting out their frustration. police say the evening started out calmly enough but later fans started throwing beer bottles and firecrackers at officers. they had to bring in extra units with batons to get the people to disburse. no fans or officers were hurt, but 15 people have been arrested. >> the police cal fallout continues after the arrest of state senator leland yee. he is accused by the federal government of an elaborate conspiracy of illegal gun running and criminal

-- or political corruption. last night lawmakers joined in calling for his resignation. we have the details. >> reporter: lieutenant-governor gavin newsome added his voice to the voices to ask leland yee to step down. >> i think the senator should resign not only for the benefit of himself and focus on his own problems, but the entire institution. >> the institution is the california state senate, which has been rattled by the high-profile arrest of yee. colleagues voted to suspend him along with two other state senators each on unrelated charges. newsome has known yee for years. they served as san francisco supervisors before he became mayor. he said his arrest is a shock. >> this is the exception, not the rule. fundamentally this is a sad day for all of us because it's all about public trust. >> the fbi investigation that

unraveled yee's ties to "shimp boy" chow started three years ago. he was known as high profile events and even posting this picture on facebook. a photo newsome laughed off. >> as mayor i will take four or five hundred photos in any particular night. you do that for 17 years there is going to be a few folks, not just the one question that you think, boy, i really wish i didn't have that picture. >> state senator leland yee is expected in federal court monday. abc7 news. >> lieutenant-governor newsome spoke to abc7 news last night while attending the beyond differences fundraiser with his wife. it was at the marin art and garden center in ross. the nonprofit spotlights student leaders working to combat social isolation among teenagers and to make middle school culture more inclusive.

an east bay refinery will pay a big fine for violating air quality standards. according to the bay air quality management district. law lay show put too much sulfur and carbon monoxide into the air in 2010. there were seven violations over a ten-day period. valero will pay $183 million to settle the violations. long lines crowd add lineup event for health insurance yesterday. it's ahead of tomorrow's deadline for coverage california. the event at the community center in san jose helped with last-minute questions. you have until midnight tomorrow to start a covered california application and be eligible to finish that application by april 15th. those who do not have insurance are subject to a tax penalty about 1% of your income. secretary of state john kerry has arrived in paris for talks on the ukraine crisis. he is scheduled to meet with the russian foreign minister this

evening at the russian ambassador's home. you abc's george stephanopoulos will talk more about the crisis in ukraine and the u.s. response to russian president vladimir putin on" this week "and that's this morning at 8:00 on abc7. apple and samsung will return to federal court in san jose tomorrow over the rights of smartphone and tablet rights of smartphone and tablet innovation. apple accuses samsung of continuing to copy key features from the i-phone and ipad in their recent products. this is the second trial in their global patent feud. apple won the first round against samsung back in 2012. samsung faces goes to $1 billion in damages as a result of that trial. are you a frequent flyer who dreads all those airline fees?

one bay area woman was especially upset when they are mother died suddenly and she had to reschedule her flight. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with her story. >> bernadette buchanan of san leandro was looking forward to seeing her 93-year-old mom back in england. >> i was all set to have a wonderful visit. it was to be a family reunion of sorts. >> however, the happy event never happened. >> it came as a terrible shock when i got a phone call this said she very suddenly passed away. >> her mom died weeks before their reunion. bernadette had to get to england right away, so she called virgin atlantic airlines to reschedule her flight. >> they said there would be no problem changing the dates but there would be a fee, $275 fee. >> however, virgin said it would refund that fee after she filled out a bereavement form. >> which i did upon my return and that's when my problems began. >> problems that she said went on for months. first she mailed in the form with the death certificate. but virgin did not refund the money. when she asked why, the airline said it needed more documents. >> they required not just a

death certificate, but a birth certificate and a marriage certificate to prove i was related to my mother. >> so she mailed in those, too. still, no refund. >> another month went by. i tried to get a hold of someone to speak to. and i was told i can no longer help you. >> so she copied all documents again and sent them all in again. virgin said it didn't receive them. >> i must have sent that death certificate in five times. the marriage certificates and the other certificates. >> next time she used certified mail. still no luck. >> it was the same story over and over again. we need more documents. we haven't received the original ones. >> bernadette didn't give up. she said it wasn't about the money, it was because the airline had promised no penalty for a daughter saying good-bye to her mom. >> if it was something else i

maybe wouldn't have felt it so deeply, but i just wanted to have it done right. >> she contacted 7 on your side. we contacted virgin atlantic. and it acted quickly. the airline found the documents, determined they were in order and refunded her money, telling us unfortunately there was a delay in the refund as the correct documentation was not received at first. virgin atlantic worked closely with mrs. buchanan to ensure the correct paperwork was filed and a refund was expedited. >> i'm very grateful. >> virgin airlines said they require more documents when the family members have different last name like bernadette and her mother. the airline needed the marriage and birth certificate to prove they are mother and daughter. it seems harsh, but it is meant to prevent abuse. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. the 20th annual black woman's expo resumes this morning and wraps up in chicago. it's already drawn huge crowds as people are checking out the workshops, vendors and entertainment offers.

sun sets. that's 12 hours 32 minutes of day light. they are looking at live doppler 7hd. we've had a few areas of showers this morning, but things are pretty quiet overall. here's a look from our exploratorium camera where skies are partly cloudy and temperatures continue to drop with numbers in the mid-40s in the higher elevations, los gatos, 48 in san jose. but plenty of 50s from san francisco, oakland and half moon bay. but in the north bay and east bay, it is cooler. you can see the clear sky there from our roof camera. 39 degrees visibility at times, less than a quarter mile there. 42 in petaluma and 44 livermore. good morning to you. overall temperatures have dropped significantly with 7 degrees of cooling at the airport. take a look at the north bay. numbers in the 40s. that is significantly colder. 17 degrees colder. of course, yesterday we had all the cloud cover and moisture. but right now we are behind the system and the dewpoints spread

allowing for the fog in the north bay. sunny breaks today with overall partly cloudy skies. heavy rain arrives by the middle of the afternoon. wind gusts anywhere from 30 to 40 miles an hour. it's a colder system so the snow levels locally will drop. we could see some flakes of snow around mt. hamilton or mound diablo. here's a look at the current setup with us in between systems. there is the next front that is going to cue up and it will allow for the break today. as we go through the afternoon, maybe a few pop-up showers here in the higher elevations. in the diablo range. but overall we are dry. 11:00 tomorrow morning you notice in the north bay, cloverdale, santa rosa looking at light showers and even the santa cruz mountain. take look what happens by the middle of the afternoon. heavy rain cloverdale. san francisco, hitting the peninsula and even into the afternoon commute. tuesday behind the system that cold low moves in and that

mudslide in washington state, the death toll continues to climb. 18 people are now confirmed dead. the number of missing have been reduce today 30. after some who were believed to be missing have now been accounted for. abc news reporter michelle franson has the latest. >> ladies and gentlemen, a moment of silence for the victims of the landslide. >> people across washington paused, and for the first time since the mountain blew an avalanche of mud and debris on the community below, at 10:37:00 a.m., one week ago saturday, all activity at the site halted. >> they have identified one more victim, bringing the total of confirmed fatalities to 18. we also know that rescuers discovered one additional victim in the debris field. that victim has not yet been identified. >> brenda neil got the news she was dreading about her husband, steve. >> i screamed and i cried and my daughter, we wrapped ourselves

-- santa brash raw when he fell and hit his head. he suffered a skull fracture and hit his brain and is in a millionly induced coma. he graduated last spring and was in santa barbara attending a community college. he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. a website has been set up by the family for donations to help cover his medical expenses. new this morning, fresno police say an adult's decision to perform cpr on two babies who nearly drown may have saved both lives. the one-year-old boy and girl were taken to a hospital yesterday after falling into a fishpond at an apartment complex. police say the kids were playing in a rear patio with other children when they got out of a fenced-in area and fell into the water. someone found them and started when is called rescue breathing until help arrived. >> it's fantastic. and it doesn't require much. rescue breathing. i think they did some compressions too because they were spitting up some of the

water from the pond also and vomiting in addition. if you have a pool, you have to be extremely careful if you have children. you have to watch them all the time. >> police say the children were under water for up to two minutes. authorities say at this point no criminal charges will be filed. five original rosie the riveters from the bay area are in washington, d.c. this morning to meet vice president joe biden at the white house. virgin america gave these iconic ladies a red carpet send-off yesterday morning with a swing dance and a free flight to the nation's capitol. the rosies represent american women who worked, in fact,ory and in shipyards during world war ii, producing supplies for the military while the men were away at service. >> these women were trailblazers for those of us who came after. in the air line industry we call this an unmanned flight.

[applause] >> each of these rosie's worked at the kaiser shipyards in the city of richmond. they have been petitioning elected officials since 2008 to recognize the contributions of rosies to america and its history. for now tesla will be able to sell cars in new york although they may have to set up dealerships some day. tesla and the automobile association reached a deal over five tesla stores currently open in the new york area. dealerships claim the stores are illegal because they sell directly to customers, while other automakers rely on independently-owned dealers to sell their cars. this new agreement means tesla will be able to keep the five stores open, but any new stores in new york will have to be run by independent dealerships. tesla contends it needs

specialized sellers to explain the benefits of more expensive electric vehicles. defense and space contractor lockheed martin is continuing to invest in a new research facility in silicon valley, even though it went through major layoffs late last year. the new palo alto center was dedicated last week. abc7 news business and technology reporter david louie got a rare look inside the labs. >> all right. go for it. >> reporter: about the only thing low tech about the new research lab is the way it was dedicated. it replaces three vintage buildings built almost 60 years ago when they tried to attract private companies to collaborate with academic researchers. 130 engineers and scientists along with support staff will be consolidated under one roof. the building so energy efficient it will save lockheed martin $1 million a year. >> it's no secret silicon valley is sort of the invasion center of the world, so it's very important that we are here

because we have some key talent at the technology center. we intend to retain our talent and we intend to attract more talent which having the new facility is important to us. >> the advance technology center or atc continues to focus on technology for space projects that are lighter, and he shows us an example. the thermo plastic nano composite clips used on spacecrafts to replace ones made from aluminum. this aluminum part takes 28 days to get through operations. we made 300 in one working day at approximately one-tenth the cost. >> the development of the titanium propellent tank designed for high pressure might some day have use in the oil and gas pipeline industry. the facility is designed to encourage separate teams to collaborate together. the palo alto mayor nancy sheppard said more companies are tearing down old buildings in favor of energy efficient ones for good reason. >> you either write a check for

>> it is bypassing in some cases over 200 miles of river habitat to get them away from some of the stressers of high water temperatures, low river flows and increased exposure to predatory fish. >> the dangers this year are entirely due to the drought. one that allows these tiny fish to travel on their own far too dangerous. >> conditions in dnecessary the >> conditions in the river right now are not favorable to releasing of these fish. so we have now decided we are going to truck all of them, the state's fall-run chinook. >> this operation will continue for the next two and a half months. 240 truck runs, as many as 30 million fish from state and federal hatcheries. >> these fish will be three-year olds, which is adult in the year 2016. the more immediate threat is the
