day and we'll lamb it out. >> you'll explain what that means, i hope. thank you, ginger. we want to turn to the new video of the earthquake and the over 100 aftershocks that have rattled southern california. millions of people on edge worrying about what might happen next. ryan owens is in pasadena with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, rather rlara. we're inside cal tech. the university where they have had a buzzy weekend. see the red dots there, each one of those, an aftershock. they haven't caused damage. they sure take a psychological toll. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: the 5.1 quake wasn't the big one. but it was big enough. watch how the jolt upstaged this high school musical friday night. [ screaming ] >> ladies and gentlemen, remain

seated. we had major earthquake. stand by please. >> reporter: the epicenter was in orange county. it did more than rattle nerves. look inside this man's house. >> everything was on the floor. most of the dishes i have left are in the dishwasher. >> reporter: outside, it cracked some of his neighbors' foundations. everyone triggered a small rock slide. nobody was seriously hurt. what's happened since friday has left a lot of people on edge. >> glass was everywhere. >> reporter: more than 100 aftershocks this weekend. our affiliate, kabc caught one on camera. >> whoa, whoa, whoa. we're still feeling earthquakes. >> every time we have another aftershock, it rattles you. the kids are more scared than anything. >> reporter: there's a small chance, less than 5%, that this quake was a foreshock, a preview of a bigger one.

still, seismologists say it's a matter of time. they say there's a 99% chance of a 6.7 or larger quake somewhere in california in the next 30 years. si seismologists assure us these are perfectly normal. we haven't had one strong enough to seal since saturday night, so fingers crosseded. >> thank you, ryan. more now from earthquake expert dr. lucy jones, a seismologist with the u.s. geological survey. thank you for joining us. tell us what the aftershocks mean and what they don't mean. >> they mean that this is a normal earthquake. we should expect to have them like this. they're decaying just like we would expect. >> not necessarily, as ryan said, a sign of bigger things to come, though it's been about 20 years since a major earthquake in california. >> well, that's right. not in california, just -- >> l.a., sorry.

>> anything, really, in the l.a. ar area, we haven't had anything close to this where we used to have them every year at this level. the last 20 years have been some of the quietest we have seen. we have to return to a normal level. we haven't stopped plate tech on the ix. >> what should we expect? >> it might be a flurry. it might go back down. it's like saying this sthis storm connected to climate change. you have to wait to see if the pattern develops. >> this was on the hills that were especially dangerous? >> it's not on it buzz above it. associated with it. it's a fault that doesn't move nearly as often's the san andreas. but, because it runs right under downtown los angeles, it's like the most damaging earthquake that we can imagine happening in

this area. >> dr. jones, thank you for your insight. now to the search for malaysian airlines flight 370. the hunt intensifying this morning, more than three weeks after in the plane went missing. an australian ship is now on the way to the expansive search area, hoping to find something. abc's david kerley has been covering it since the beginning. he joins us now. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, lara. this ship is steaming, on its way from perth, australia, to this new search area, look for something. exactly what will it find? even this morning, more than three weeks later, no debris has been found. those orange objects spotted by flight cruise were just old fishing gear. the planes continue to crisscross an area as big as new mexico. ten more objects spotted an hour ago. the best brains in the world are

biggest day yet. so far, the website seems to be handling it without major problems. as of friday, 6 million people have signed up. the goal was 7 million. 6 million is far greater than most people anticipated they would get. white house officials say they believe day are closing in on the 7 million. >> they think they're getting close. there's a lot, this overall big number doesn't tell us. >> reporter: that's right. a lot we don't know. first of all, how many people that have signed up have actually paid. remember, you're not actually enrolled until you make the first prem yum payment. how many that signed up are young and healthy? and how many were previously uninsured? and how many had old plans canceled? after we get the final numbers, it will be awhile before we know how well this is all going to work. >> thank you, jon. now for the first time of what i hope will be many times, i say let's get today's other top stories from amy.

moment sending shock waves through a college campus. watch again as this police officer rams into a young woman and appears to hit her in the face. >> out of nowhere, we see this cop come up and just level her. she wasn't looking. she wasn't antagonizing anybody. >> reporter: the shocking moment unfolding during a riot on and near the university of arizona campus saturday night following the school's loss to the university of wisconsin. eliminating them from the ncaa march madness basketball tournament. in other video from that night, you can see lis trying to contain unruly students using foam batons and powder pelts. ultimately arresting 15 people. but phoebe, whose friend shot this video, witnessed this firsthand and that the girl in the video didn't appear to be doing anything wrong. >> it was not out of context. you saw the video. they were not telling us anything. and this girl just got knocked

starting today. this morning, anna trujillo will walk into court for opening statements. the 45-year-old accused of brutally murdering her on-again, off-again boyfriend, dr. stephen anderson last june, among other things, striking him with her high-heeled shoe. she called 911 shortly before 4:00 a.m. on june 9th. they say she answered the door covered in blood. inside they say they found 59-year-old anderson, a medical researcher at the university of houston, in a hallway and her stiletto right next to him. >> the defendant deceased appeared to have a ten puncture bounds to the head. 15 to 20 along his face, arms, and neck. >> reporter: according to police, the couple got into a fight at a nightclub after another man offered to by trujillo a drink. later police say the fight continued at anderson's apartment. according to court documents obtained by abc news,

prosecutors allege trujillo tried to stop him from breathing by applying pressure to his neck. trujillo, a mother of two and out on bail is pleading not guilty. claiming she was acting in self defense. >> stephen anderson grabbed her. they started wrestling. he got her into a hold. >> reporter: her lawyer is hoping to put her on the stand. >> i'm going to have limited time to try to get a jury to understand that though she's had problems in the past, she's a kind person at heart. >> reporter: if convicted, she could face from five years to life in prison. her lawyers say the evidence will show she was abused many times in the past. the key will be on the night in question whether she was justified in using the force she did against him to save herself. lara? >> thank you so much. dan, so much as been said about the fact that the weapon is a stiletto. how much legal significance is there? >> a lot for the defense. we're not talking about a gun. a knife. we're talking about an item that

someone has around, sitting around. her claim is that she needed to grab it to defend herself. i think that will be an integral part of the defense. >> prosecution says a lot more than a stiletto was used. >> well, that's right. they say that after the attack, and again, they say this was an attack. not self-defense, that he was smothered, so this was not just an attack with the stiletto in self-defense. there was more to it. she prevented him from breathing, et cetera. if that's the case, that is crucial. if they can show this is not just an attack with the stiletto, that he was smothered or strangled or something like that, it changes the entire dynamic or what the case is going to be about. >> you just heard her lawyer saying they're going to put her on the stand. do you think that's a good idea? >> depends on what kind of witness she is. look, it's incredibly risky to

put her on the stand. the case will come down to her testimony. the case will come down to, do the jurors believe her? or not? so, if she could be a good witness, absolutely. if she could be a problematic witness, this could be the defining moment that leads to a conviction. it will be an incredibly important moment. i'm surprised that the defense attorney is promising that so early. i might have waited, see how the case goes, then make the decision. but the defense attorney is promising that right at the outset. >> right out of the gate. thank you, dan. we turn to an outrageous scam. a minnesota couple on the run accused of taking thousands of dollars in public assistance to fuel a lavish lifestyle. mara schiavocampo here with that story. mara? >> the couple spent tens of thousands of public assistance money on spa massages. experts say this is likely not the only fraud they've committed. andrea and colin chisholm call themselves lord and lady chisholm.

but the only titles officials are giving them, fraudsteres. >> how do you suddenly create yourself as a lord? maybe they're watching "downton abbey" too much. >> reporter: though they lived a high life, in among other places, this minnesota million dollar mansion, minnesota authorities say they collected close to $170,000 in welfare, medical assistance and food stamps over a seven-year period. >> mr. chisholm, in particular, is a con man of the first order. he claimed he was a scottish heir. >> reporter: this morning, the self-proclaimed royals are on the run with their 7-year-old son. >> we believe they're outside the united states, someplace where it's warm. >> reporter: and police are on the hunt. >> i think we'll be able to figure out where they are because of certain trails. money trails. bank accounts. when you lead a life of fraud, you make mistakes. >> reporter: according to court documents, these alleged fraudsters received benefits from two states.

minnesota and then florida. for about a year, both states at the same time. authorities say they started receiving public assistance in 2005 after claiming they lived with andrea's mom in minneapolis. but investigators say their home was actually this $1.2 million yacht in florida. at one point, they claimed only $80 in their name. the criminal investigation shows millions in bank accounts. adding they spent $23,000 for plane tickets, cell phone bills and fine dining in just one month. authorities are determined to make them pay up in a different way. >> these rich folks ripped off the system. and i will assure you that this office is going to do every darn thing we can to make sure these people do hard time. >> reporter: now, i spoke with chisholm's ex-wife who says he was always a good salesperson. very good at convincing people.
