live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. we have a series of breaking news stories. thanks for joining us. our lead story involves the legal team representing state senator leland yee. the attorney will no longer represent the san francisco democrat against federal charges of corruption and gun trafficking. san francisco attorney will take over the defend. no one will say exactly why the change is being made but if a statement he says that he and yee are long time friends and he was there to help initially but now it is time for a change.

>> more breaking news, a mystery spill has pop up in alameda. we were over the scene a few moments ago. this is the marina with the alameda fire department saying it is a large diesel spill and you can see the sheen on the water. so far it has not spread to the beach and no word on the cause. the fire crews are trying to track down the source. our breaking news coverage on the stories continues now at abc7 news bay area. >> a neighborhood cleaning up after a 90-year-old oak tree came crashing down last night. the good news is that no one was hurt. the bad news is that cars were destroyed and folk are facing a big and expensive clean up. nick spoke with the car owners and christians us from oakland. nick? >> this house was built in 1896, the homeowners just moved in, in

july, and standing in front of it was a 45-year-old oak tree that has been here 90 years and it came down and took out everything in its path. >> the bmw is where he parked it but it was not in the same condition he left: mother nature had other plans. >> the tree already fell over and my niece alerted us, and sent us pictures of the tree on the car. >> now rather than heading to work he is faced with repair list. >> it is the worst. i don't have a care. >> maureen's car is now twisted steel and now salvaged spare parts. >> i could see the headlight and i knew it was my car. a cruel april fool's joke. >> the silver lining is the direction the oak fell.

the home was spared which was recently remodels and dates back to the 19 90's. it crashed down just after 10:00 last night. >> he has a gorgeous home. so sad for the cars but good for the home. >> the thick trunk and heavy branches destroyed everything in its path ripping apart power lines and splintering cable connections and snapping the streetlight from the hinges and four homes lost power. >> the rain that blanketed the bay area, made short work of this tree's root system making its weight too much to bear. the three cars below were barely visible with branches where windshields uses to be and leaving covering the interior. >> the public work crews have been here since this morning taking the free apart piece by piece, taking it for the truck

and chopping it up some small pieces. on more breaking news, two bodies have been found in a submerged car near a pittsburg golf course. the car was found in a canal on west leland road near the delta view golf course. ones say they saw a car crash into a fence into the canal. teams are on the scene to recover the bodies and the car. we will bring you more details when we get them. >> it want a lot but you could see the rain brought a slight dusting of snow to the mountain top of mount diabolo. at sfo it is drying it. there were weather-related delays there, yesterday. meteorologist mike nicco is outside with a look at the rain totals and the sunny sky behind him, for once. >> it is different than yesterday where we are dodging

pea-sized hail and hiding inside while mother nature threw out lightning bolts. >> sfo arrival delays are over. you can see a hot of sunshine with the rain over now. the totals are all over the place from barely .5" in livermore but in concord, more than 1", and 1.25" in oakland and 1.75" in san francisco. 2" in santa rosa. now a look at this: you can see the totals will drop a little bit but it is still very formidable from 7" in san jose to 18". this is not a drought buster but it is a healthy rain and it brought 5' to parts of lake tahoe and we are up and still only a third of where we should be. all a dry. grab the sunglasses. it is chilly.

warmer weather is on the way before another chance of light rain. >> san bruno residents are reacting to the thursday that a federal grand jury indicted pg&e on criminal charges in connection with the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. the indictment accuses peg of knowingly violating the federal pipeline safety act. eight people were killed and 66 were injured and 38 homes destroyed. matt keller joins us with more from san bruno. >> 25 of the homes have been rebuild but finding closure will be tough for residents. >> it is nearly impossible to live in the san bruno neighbor without a reminder each day of the pipeline explosion in 2010 that killed eight people and injured dozens. work crews are already here with the latest roth installing the water and sewer enough structure. philip was home with his wife and two children with a clear memory.

>> we thought it was an earthquake. i saw fire in the canyon behind us the i thought we better run to the garage. we ran through the garage and there was a fire up the street, jumped in the car and just got out. >> 3 1/2 years later the prosecution charges pg&e with 12 felony violations of the natural gas pipeline safety act accusing the utility company of inaccurate record keeping, along with failing to identify lets. pg&e released a video statement in response to the charges but did not provide any additional information or answer any questions. >> san bruno was a tragic accident. we have taken accountability and we are deedily sorry. >> the city manager is pleased for the criminal justice charges but does not like that pg&e continues to call the pipeline explosion an "accident." >> what happened in san bruno was the direct result of decades long negligence on the part of

pg&e and lack of appropriate oversight by the regulator. >> pg&e faces 500,000 fine for each of the 12 champions -- charges but you for many there is no justice negotiation punishment that can replace what was taken. >> like a drink driver that killed your family. nothing going to bring your family back. >> no court hearing has been scheduled but the city officials expect construction to take place in this neighborhood for at last another year. matt, thank you. happening now in chile thousands of people are going home to check for damage hours after a massive 8.2 magnitude earthquake hit. they were evacuated. there were casualtied. not as many as you could expect for so large an earthquake. katie marzullo has the latest. >> six people were killed in the earthquake some crush by debris and others suffered fatal heart attacks. the president has declared part

of the northern part of the country a disaster zone and is scheduled to visit the areas today. >> the tsunami sirens blast. a hospital is evacuated. people are scene running from stores. nearly a million people are forced from their homes. the earthquake felt as far away as bolivia and peru. >> my kids were very upset. you could feel the wall moving and the floor. >> president of chile says the extent of the damage from the 8.2 earthquake is accessed and asking people not to panic. >> the country has been able to face these first few hours of emergency in a good way and i would like to call on people would live in the affected regions to. calm and to follow instructions by authorities so we can ensure their safety. >> 300 escaped inmates from a women's prison with antiriot police and soldiers we played to

round them up. the big earthquake and more than 20 significant after shocks touched off land lieds that blocked roads, knocked out powers to thousands and damaged an airport and started fires that destroyed several businesses. it triggered tsunami that sent 6' waves crashing to shore in chile. experts are not predicting any major tsunami. they are, however, warning of another large earthquake. >> we expect another 8.8 or 8.9 earthquake in the future. >> there are various reports of how many prisoners have been re-captured. the pacific tsunami center is alerting people in hawaii that they could encounter sea level changes and strong currents. >> bay front property is ready to change hands overlooking the

>> a snowboarder from san francisco who disappeared in monday's storm has been found alive and well. he was snow boarding with his father in the back country across interstate 80 from a resort and they were separated from the cold and snow. authorities say that he spent monday night and yesterday walking until he found a home

with live doppler 7 hd, set all the way back to early this morning where during the commute we were watching a few showers rotate southwest at the low moved away from us and they are all gone and the clouds are opening and we are getting sunshine. high pressure is moving in, and our winds are fairly light less than ten miles per hour and they are blowing to the southwest with the low pulling away. up to 5 feet of snow in in areas around lake tahoe. look how beautiful, too bad it didn't look there way in december and january. late, heavy snow up there, too little, too late for the snow pack, but, city, possibly some good skiing if you are headed that way. low-to-mid 50's is what we feel outside right new. with the sunshine, it feels warmer than that, especially year, our temperatures were almost the same. when you are cold and wet you feel colder. over san jose the clouds are breaking up with a lot of blue sky with clouds this afternoon and not so chilly as yesterday. light rain is possible on friday and above average highs for
