in texas. another shooting in fort hood as a soldier opens fire. here is the very latest. the shooter has been identified as ivan lopez. he is an army specialist stationed at fort hood. lopez is being treated f mental illness. he was being treated for post traumatic stress disorder. three of the wounded are in critical condition and they believe the shooting was not related to terrorism. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze in for carolyn johnson. fort hood is near the texas town of coline north of austin. >> sadly this has all happened before. in 2009 fort hood was the site of the deadliest mass shooting ever at a military base. >> it is an eerily fap leer

scene. >> the first responders from military police and responders went to the scene anden -- and engaged the shooter. >> obviously it was one of the situations where you don't believe it is happening especially again here at fort hood. >> at least four or dead including a gunman and a fellow soldier and more than a dozen injured. the conditions ranging from stable to critical. the shooter fired a 45 caliber semiautomatic pistol purchased recently. the incident brought back painful memories of the deadly masacre at fort hood nearly five years ago. >> we know these families. we know these incredible sacrifices to the country. obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community. we are heart broken that

something like this might have happened again. >> 13 killed and 30 wounded in 2009 in what was the deadliest mass shooting ever at an american military base. the question, how could this have happened again? >> we don't have the facts. we will get the facts. when we have those facts specifically about fort hood we will address them. >> there was no indication related to related toldier terrorism. the motive remains unknown. abc news, washington. >> we are learning more about the gunman. again, he has been identified as specialist ivan lopez. an active duty soldier who served for four months in 2011. the 34-year-old served as a truck driver. law enforcement officials say he took his own life after he was confronted by an officer who drew her weapon. officials say lopez was treated for mental health issues including depression and anxiety. he was under evaluation for ptsd .

he was married and had a 3-year-old daughter. his wife is now cooperating with authorities. as you can imagine, people who live in the nearby city can't believe this has happened again. the second shooting in five years at fort hood. >> it is scary. have i been here for 23 -- i have been here for 23 years. >> it is scary. we just moved here so it is nothing we are used to. sometimd you can't control. >> in arlington, texas fans and players at the rangers game paused to remember the victims of the shooting. a moment of silence was held before the game for those injured and killed at fort hood today. we are continuing coverage of the fort hood shooting tragedy on air and on-line. they are reporting on this developing story. it continues on twitter at abc7 news bay area. >> in other news, two powerful aftershocks rattled nerves in chile after an 8.2 earthquake. a 7.8 magnitude quake followed

a 6.4 aftershock just southwest of inki ce. no word on any damage. early tsunami warnings were canceled. six people died in tuesday's earthquake. chile is in an area known as the ring of fire. that is a circle of quake prone areas on the pacific rim. back here the chp is looking for a driver who took them on a high speed chase across the east bay freeways. the pursuit reached 100 miles per hour. part was caught on the emeryville camera. what you are seeing took place before 10:00. the car, a four-door black nissan altima raced west on highway 24 to westbound 80. you can hear the sirens and the chp chasing it. it made a you turn by the bay bridge toll plaza. the driver was wanted for dui on a prior washt -- prior warrant. >> in campbell tonight, five people are facing charges for the death of a teenager.

he was stabbed while attacking a transient and now his fellow attackers are in jail for his murder. ama dates is live at the santa clara county jail to explain. ama? >> reporter: dan, the five people are here in jail. the man, the transient who they are accused of attacking, he is still recovering from his injuries. he is the one who stabbed the boy, but he is not being charged because police say it was self-defense. >> these five young men ages 17 to 20 are affiliated with a street gang and today they were charged with the murder of one of their own. they didn't do the actual killing. according to campbell police, the suspects along with ivan diaz got into an argument with todd tharpe on the night of march 16th. the argument became violent. >> the six subjects in the group attacked the transient and began physically assaulting him pretty brutally. at that point he retrieved a

knife in an attempt to defend himself stabbed one of the subjects. >> diaz later died. the other attackers are being held rr his death. under the provocative death doctrine they can be found guilty of murder even if tharpe stabbed diaz. >> since he had to protect himself and ended up stabbing be charged with be charged wite homicide themselves because they started the altercation. >> they moved to campbell from chicago about a year ago. >> everyone told us that campbell is safest place and then to find out just up the street this kind of situation happened, that is upsetting thinking there would be atentiar potential gang or congregating at this park. the>> police say s rather for campbell, and they are working to make sure the community is safe. ama dates, abc7 news. >> new at 11:00, the lights at one of the runways at oakland
