aisle that could be enticing your child and you to leap after the lucky charms? is the secret finally revealed? good morning, america. here is what we know right now about the second mass shooting at ft. hood in five years. one of the largest army posts in america. this time the shooter identified as an iraqi war veteran being treated for mental illness. >> his name is army specialist ivan lopez. he served four months in iraq in 2011 and had been seeking treatment for posttraumatic stress. investigators now focusing on whether an argument on the army post triggered the shooting. >> reports in that he was wearing fatigues. in the end, he was face to face with a female police officer. she stood her ground. that's when he shot himself. let's get right to the scene of

the shooting. alex perez is live at ft. hood. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. this shooting bringing back chilling memories for those here back in 2009. the gunman we are told worked as a military truck driver and had not yet been diagnosed with ptsd. [ take shelter immediately ] this was the loudspeaker announcement that blared through ft. hood late wednesday afternoon warning the base's residents to take shelter. >> i heard gunshots. at that point i was scared. >> reporter: a soldier now identified as specialist ivan lopez had opened fire just after 4:25 p.m. reportedly after an argument on the base. >> it is believed that he walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fire, got into a vehicle, fired from a vehicle, got out of the vehicle, walked into another building and opened fire again. >> reporter: those two buildings, a medical brigade unit and the transportation battalion. >> at that point we began to witness soldiers from across the street at the transportation unit fleeing. there is a barbed wire fence

about seven foot, seven and a half foot high and they were leaping over it. >> reporter: lopez dressed in army fatigues, uses a handgun to kill three people. 16 others are injured and rushed to area hospitals. >> they've had a variety of injuries we've been treating ranging from gunshot wounds that involved extremities, abdomen, chest and neck. >> reporter: at 4:45 p.m. about 20 minutes after the rampage began, the ordeal comes to a violent end. lopez taking his own life after a female police officer confronts him in a parking lot. >> he was approaching her at about 20 feet. put his hands up, then reached under his jacket, pulled out the nine mill and she pulled out her weapon and then she engaged and then he put the weapon to his head and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: president obama speaking to the nation as scant information trickled in.

>> i want to just assure all of us that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. >> reporter: finally at 9:52 p.m. the base is given the all clear but fear remains. just five years ago, ft. hood was the scene of the worst mass shooting on a military base in u.s. history when army psychiatrist nidal hasan killed 13 people and wounded 30 others. and it was also a female officer who stopped the gunman back in 2009. we are expecting to learn more about how exactly things unfolded here during a press briefing later this afternoon. robin. >> all right, alex. a lot of information coming out overnight about the shooter. abc's pierre thomas has that part of our coverage. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the suspect was apparently suffering from serious mental health issues and sources tell me that likely played a key role in yesterday's tragic shooting spree. while the motive for the shooting is unclear, military

officials are describing the suspect as a man in turmoil this morning. possibly suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. >> he was undergoing behavioral health and psychiatric treatment for depression and anxiety. he was on medication. >> reporter: ivan lopez had told officials he suffered from a traumatic brain injury but the military had not been able to confirm that. >> he was not a wounded warrior. he was not wounded in action to our records. no purple heart. >> reporter: lopez, an active duty soldier and truck driver had served in iraq for four months in 2011 and had only come to ft. hood in february. his neighbor told us he had moved near the base just three weeks ago with whom she believes are his wife and daughter, a toddler. >> i noticed his wife coming out of the apartment and she was hysterical. >> reporter: authorities say lopez bought the 45 caliber smith & wesson handgun used in the shootings at a local gun store in recent days. because he was not officially determined to be mentally ill by a court, the purchase was perfectly legal but the shooting on the heels of the 2009 mass

murders at ft. hood again raises questions about base security. >> if you have a weapon and you're on base it's supposed to be registered on base. we'll have to re-examine all those programs and see if there were any gaps. >> reporter: sources tell us they're investigating whether a dispute on or near the base may have started the mayhem. a key question this morning, did this man clearly suffering from mental health issues fall through the cracks and were there enough red flags to stop him from buying a gun? george. >> a lot to investigate there. okay, pierre, thanks. this violence painful at ft. hood where they're still dealing from the fallout in that 2009 shooting. let's get more on this from abc's martha raddatz. martha, the big question everyone asking, how could this happen again? >> reporter: george, these are very different cases. first of all, you had nidal hasan who said he thought the u.s. military was waging a war against islam. and this where you had a soldier

suffering from depression, anxiety and being looked at for posttraumatic stress. this much more resembles a case in may of 2009 in baghdad where a soldier getting mental health treatment opened fire in a mental health facility there in baghdad and he killed five. so it's very similar to that one. >> martha, we know these problems of posttraumatic stress so prevalent for veterans, one in five veterans of those wars may have ptsd of the iraq and afghanistan wars. >> reporter: exactly and this also may be a real wake-up call for the military, as you said, one in five service members suffer from posttraumatic stress syndrome or other mental health issues. but it is very important to stress, george, that violence against others is not rampant among those who suffer ptsd. they are trying to destigmatize this but this may be a big wake-up call for the military. >> it sure is. okay, martha, thanks very much. okay, george. now to those breaking tornado warnings in the midwest. people being asked to take shelter right now. and ginger, i know you've been tracking it for us.

>> already been a violent morning. st. louis, a reported tornado just outside the city. we're watching this storms. it's been a very violent 24 hours. more than 120 severe weather reports, including that reported tornado. and we want to show you the other issue. the heavy rains. there were flash flood warnings all over missouri. water rescues just outside kansas city, or not too far from there. and then that hail. the hail that not only sounds like this as you're trying to get through, but it punctures through the windshield. golf-ball sized hail and that possible again today. here is the area we're most concerned about. going up from houston to cincinnati, back to des moines and then this red area. that's the heart of it. laser focus from st. louis down to memphis, little rock, all parts of southern missouri and even as far south as northern louisiana. i'm so concerned about the damaging wind potential, the hail especially and the isolated tornados that we will be heading out starting in memphis and driving into the storms. we'll of course bring you the very latest as we get there and

have it all tomorrow on "gma." robin? all right, ginger, thank you. the other top stories, we turn to amy for that. amy? good morning, everyone. and we begin with another major earthquake overnight in chile. the 7.6 magnitude aftershock rattled buildings. sent items flying off shelves and thousands of koeal stall residents were forced to evacuate for the second-straight night. this time, however, no reports of any major damage. a tsunami warning was canceled for the same area impacted by tuesday's massive 8.2 earthquake which destroyed boats and cars, ignited fires and killed at least six people. also happening overnight, a delta air lines flight from atlanta had to make an emergency landing at jfk airport here in new york because of possible hydraulic problems. it landed safely, but while taxiing the plane rolled off the tarmac onto the grass. there were 118 passengers on board but no one was injured. and an urgent warning about the security of your debit card. if federal authorities are warning banks about a string of

cyberattacks targeting atms. hackers are installing malware on bank computer networks and changing atm settings to withdraw more money than you even have in your account. in one case, the thieves managed to withdraw $40 million from 12 accounts. smaller banks have been their favorite targets. well, history at the vatican this morning as pope francis welcomes queen elizabeth for a rare, private meeting. abc's hamish macdonald is there with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: amy, this is a historic moment. queen elizabeth is now sitting down in the vatican with pope francis. it's their first meeting but her fifth time here in rome to meet with the pope. but by far the most informal of all those occasions by far. it's not a state visit. she is not wearing a black vail. it's a casual conversation. inside the pope's study, the duke is there. a translator, but nobody else. and remember, at 87 years of age, she is traveling much less these days. it's her first trip out of the uk in just the last three years.

amy? there was a flight frightening scene at a railroad crossing in houston, texas. the driver of an suv, look at it there, with two children inside apparently just couldn't wait. he drove around those crossing gates but he didn't make it as you saw. it was slammed by that oncoming train. both children and the two adults who were inside that jeep were taken to the hospital. amazingly they are all expected to be okay. >> all right. finally, heated up about this one. a big debate raging among parents who struggle every day to balance work and family, should a star baseball player take time off for the birth of his child? how is that a question? that's my first one. daniel murphy of the new york mets did that. he missed the first two games of the season to be with his wife and his newborn son. players are absolutely allowed to take paternity leave but that is not stopping some fans and sports radio hosts from going on the attack.

razor blades to jungle gyms and monkey bars. the latest in a park outside philadelphia. and abc's ron claiborne has the story. >> reporter: this morning, instead of slips and falls at the neighborhood park, parents are now being asked to watch out for a more sinister danger, razor blades hidden in the playground. >> i want to go to the park. >> reporter: 2-year-old madden jenks was on his dad's shoulders at this illinois park last week when he reached for the monkey bars. >> he said ouch. jason put him down because he thought maybe it was hurting his hands, the coldness of the bar so he put him down and then he started bleeding. >> reporter: the toddler had cut his finger on a blade. >> we looked and there was razor blades were everywhere. >> reporter: on the monkey bars, rock climbing wall, the fire pole, even the bottom of the slide. someone had glued a dozen straight edge razor blades all over the playground equipment. a dangerous prank that just happened again, this time at a park outside philadelphia. >> i just don't know why anyone would do that. >> reporter: on tuesday,

brookhaven, pennsylvania, police removed several blades that had been duct taped to playground equipment. no one was hurt. but police are now warning parents to check all park gear before letting children play on it. sadly, cases like these have occurred before in cities across the country. like in san diego last september, authorities there used metal detectors to find razors that had been placed blade side up in the grass. >> open. >> reporter: as for little madden, luckily he's going to be okay. >> it could have been horrible. it could have sliced his hand open completely. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >> i'm so glad he's going to be okay. but are you kidding me? come on people. now a story that could change the way you think about your breakfast right now. a new study finding those cartoon characters on cereal boxes could be enticing your kids at the grocery store and not in a way you might think. abc's mara schiavocampo has the

details. >> reporter: here's looking at you, kids. that's the finding from a new cornell university study revealing a possible secret weapon in marketing children's cereal. the characters on the box may be using their eyes to beckon your kids at the grocery store. researchers say they found that far beyond the reach of their saturday morning tv home turf, tony the tiger -- >> they're gggreat! >> reporter: -- and lucky the leprechaun -- ♪ they're magically delicious >> reporter: -- and their colorful friends may be using eye contact to entice kids in the aisle. >> simply seeing eyes, even if it's a cartoon character draws a lot more attention. >> reporter: food marketing researcher brian wansink and his team looked at 57 different boxes of kids cereal. and when they followed the eyes of of toucan sam, they had eyes angled downward aimed squarely kids high 48 inches and under. >> trust level goes up about 18% if you make eye contact with

>> reporter: it sounded like a chilling ordeal. 31-year-old dwayne yeager calling 911 just after 7:00 a.m. monday morning to report his home had been broken into and ransacked while he was out for just 45 minutes. >> i come back, my door is wide open. my windows to my son's bedroom are wide open. my tvs are laying on the ground. >> reporter: the problem, police say it all turned out to be an elaborate ferris bueller style ruse. >> taking the day off. now get dressed and come over. >> reporter: allegedly perpetrated by yeager to get out of work and there appears to be proof. police say this surveillance video from a neighbor's home shows yeager pulling up to his own home. a few moments later that open window he told 911 about opens. shortly after that, yeager re-emerges, moments before placing that 911 call. >> i called y'all right away. >> reporter: when questioned further police say he admitted he staged the whole thing because of a bad case of the monday morning blues. >> he confessed this case was done because he didn't want to go to work. his wife was adamant about going and he just simply didn't want

struck by an arizona police officer sent flying over a metal bench during a riot after arizona's ncaa loss last weekend. the officer under investigation by the tucson police and the woman in that video speaking out exclusively on "gma" this morning. abc's cecilia vega has her story. >> reporter: it is the disturbing march madness video gone viral. a tucson officer ramming an unsuspecting student knocking her down during last weekend's riot police were called in to quell after the university of arizona's defeat. watch again. the officer slams the young woman sending her flying over a bench. this morning in an abc news exclusive, christina is speaking out for the first time and showing off the injury she says she got when that officer pummeled her for what she says was no apparent reason. >> he hit me with kind of his whole body but had a baton so he

kind of used that as his force. i was blindsided. >> reporter: she says she was with friends walking on a sidewalk back to their car after saturday's game. she says she did not cross police lines and was never told she could not be in the area. >> next thing i know i was just like on a bench like my feet up in the air and i didn't really know what exactly just happened. >> reporter: she was not arrested. tucson police say the officer, 18-year veteran sergeant joel mann has received so many threats the department has since changed his assignment for his safety. police telling abc news, internal affairs is now investigating the video. along with more than 100 hours of footage captured by police themselves and that the department will thoroughly investigate this incident to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the department's response to the entire incident." while authorities say they've been in contact with christina, she says she hasn't heard a word from police.

i ordered a bunch of cosmetics online from third party vendors selling brand name products and compared them to the same items i bought at authorized retail stores. the first red flag, my purchase from this outlet site which says it sells authentic mac makeup for a fraction of the cost. >> the bill came from beijing, china. many of the items i purchased online looked a little off. >> this is supposed to be a matte shade. that looks awfully shiny. the color is definitely different. look at this imperfection above the "r." two stood out. this mac foundation from the outlet site. there's a sticker that's printed on the box here. feels lighter. this mirror is cracked. and this benefit, they're real mascara i purchased on ebay for $6 less than the retail cost. different eyes, they're green. they're brown. see the printing over here is just imperfect so we sent the mascara and foundation online to

nsf labs to see if they were comparable to the ones in the stores. guess what, they weren't. the mascara wasn't the same as the authentic. although the lab says the differences were slight, most staggering, the lead found in the knockoff mac foundation. the authentic product had 0.27 micrograms per gram. the knockoff we purchased, 260 micrograms per gram of lead. almost a thousand times as much. >> this equates to 26 times the allowable level of lead in cosmetics produced in canada. currently there are no set levels for lead or other heavy metals for cosmetics in the u.s. >> reporter: dermatologists say the trace amount of lead in the authentic foundation isn't concerning. but the amount in the knockoff compact is. lead can be absorbed through the skin. it's not quite as direct as ingesting it but depending on the content some knockoffs can potentially cause serious reactions. >> they can permanently scar you

that in and kind of creates -- you guys like that. >> i love these people. we create a smothered chicken in a sauce that is so delicious the beauty of this, if you overcook it by a few minutes or have to let it rest waiting for someone to come home the thighs will not dry out. >> the thighs have so much favor. >> we take canned beans and i've sauteed them with some onions, i'll add canned black beans which are a great value. i'll throw in a little bit of water, a touch of chili flakes and bring them up to a boil. >> they're a good part of holding on to the protein. you cook them for about 15 minutes while this is going on, you boil up some regular long grain rice, rice and beans is an excellent combination of star much and carbohydrates that bring something together to make i delicious. we have the chicken cooked in the sauce, the sauce a little bit left over to make it magnificent.

now the star is revealing why she took the time away from the show. she was facing a life-threatening diagnosis of cancer. she joins us today in her first television interview to talk about her illness and how she overcame it. would you please welcome an overcomer here to "good morning america"? yes. >> thank you. >> brittany, i've been looking forward to seeing you. first of all, how are you doing? >> i'm doing great. i'm doing great. i'm in remission for the last two years. i'm totally healthy and i'm doing really good. thank you. >> it was stage 4 non-hodgkin's lymphoma. >> yes. stage 4 and i have survived it and i'm so blessed beyond bef e belief. it's amazing. >> you have decided no you to step forward. how did you first realize that something wasn't quite right with you? >> you know, i think that's a huge thing to learn is that you got to listen to your body. i just knew something wasn't right. i was having pain in my low back

but everybody has low back pain. but i just -- i sensed something was wrong but it kept persisting. i also started getting flu-like symptoms. i had swollen lymph nodes and so i got a series of testing, scans, mris, things like that and the doctors ended up finding that i had stage 4 lymphoma. >> and no history of it in your family. >> it's not a genetic thing so, yeah, it was a surprise. finding out in your mid-0s that you have cancer. but my family just rallied behind me and totally supported me. i could not have gotten through this without them. there is no way. >> you have a twin sister many of us know from the movie you were in and you live with her and your mother came and helped as well. >> i moved in with my twin sister just outside of l.a. >> ah. >> yes, my mom moved out from florida and for a year and a half my mom and my sister nursed me back to health. my brother flew out from florida

and helped out a lot too and we just got through it together. and i didn't talk about it for a couple of years. >> it's a personal journey if you want to discuss it or not so why did you decide now that you wanted to let people know? >> i just felt for personal reasons i felt like, you know, this is something that, you know, i went through a lot of depression after even when i found out that i was cancer-free i think some people don't know that but you can go through depression after going through cancer because of all the medication, it affects your hormones, i went think a lot of sadness so went through many stages and pulled through that and for me i think i'm in the final stages of this emotional healing and i feel like now i need to talk about this. i feel like i need to reach out. i need strength from all sources and i want to be able to share my story for myself and i really want to be able to help other people. i would watch shows like this when i was going through this. and i want anybody watching to

know that it is absolutely possible to get through something like this so for me i feel deep in my soul that i want to be able to reach out to people and go, it's possible. i was bald, i was 30 pounds lighter than this and it is possible to get through something like this and i hope that if i can speak about it i can give somebody else hope so i want to speak out about it. >> it's part of your healing process. still a part of your recovery. i just want to hug you when you're -- i mean, i'm just so happy. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> i'm so grateful you wanted to share this. >> thank you. >> and there is somebody that's watching. you know, amy and i she's walking the journey and we were talking about how people think you'll be euphoric when you get to the other side of it. >> yes. >> and it's -- it's till difficult. >> it's a journey. >> i'm still going through it but i mean honestly it was the hardest thing i have ever been through but there has been beautiful things that have come out of it too. >> you've learned so much more about yourself. >> oh, my gosh. absolutely. >> and your character kelly,
