good saturday morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. it's 8:00 a.m. here's a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning. we give the radar a break today. the radar on top of mount st. helena and in the south bay, a little bit of sunshine. 50 in oakland. 51 in san jose. we have some cloud cover there. half moon bay also is at 50. here's the plan for the rest of the day. we'll see the clouds continuing to scour on out. but the winds will be breezy. certainly at the coast, keeping the numbers in the upper 50s to the low 60s there. we will be near 70 today in the livermore valley.

a detailed look at your weekend and a warmer week ahead coming up. this morning, ground crews at the oakland coliseum are doing everything they can to get the infield ready for play after last night's game was canceled unexpectedly. >> regrettably, due to field conditions, tonight's game has been postponed. >> yikes. the infield was just too wet to play on, all because of an embarrassing mistake. tiffany wilson has the details. >> reporter: the worst seat in the house belongs to this guy, driving around the infield. athletics management says the tarp was left off the field overnight hoping the field would dry out. the field looks fine now. but vice president of stadium operations says the a's, seattle mariners and the umpires all felt conditions were dangerous.

earlier you could see manager bob melvin's foot sink into the field. frustrated fans congregated in the parking lot. >> we are bummed, bummed. >> we're playing the mariners. seattle, washington, the wettest place in the world and they postpone the game down here? give me a break. they're a bunch of sissies. >> reporter: james davis had 40 relatives in from across the country to celebrate his birthday at the game. >> it's really disappointing that the grounds crew couldn't get it together today to figure out how to cover out the infield. >> reporter: water woes forced the cancellation of tuesday's game and the bay bridge finale last saturday. then this, a sewage problem in the clubhouse last weekend when toilets were actually gurgling. in oakland, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> some a's players made the best of the cancellation by heading over to the warriors game.

the warriors tweeted this morning of josh redick and nick punto hanging out at the game. a second uc berkeley student has been diagnosed with measles. the student road b.a.r.t. last month and attended classes before being quarantined on april 3rd. the city health department is notifying others who may have been exposed to the disease. firefighters have rescued a man from the san francisco bay t at the end of the berkeley pier. it appeared he was in distress last night. paramedics wrapped him in blankets before taking him to the hospital to get checked out. a national guard rescue team based out of moffett field is on an urgent mission to save a sick baby. the 1-year-old's family is stuck at sea.

abc 7 news anchor ama daetz has more. >> reporter: it was supposed to be an epic adventure, the kaufman family on their boat sailing around the world. but three weeks in, 1-year-old lyra developed a large rash. she started vomiting and got diarrhea. the family called for help launching a joint rescue mission involving the coast guard, navy and 129th rescue wing out of moffett field. the 129th flew to the boat's location, almost 1,000 miles southwest of cabo san lucas. >> we parachuted a four-man pararescue team and a rubber boat, inflatable boat to the location of the sailing boat. >> reporter: the team boarded the sailboat and stabilized the little girl. but the family's boat became disabled. the kaufmans and the rescue team wait for the u.s. navy to arrive from san diego. the ship will pick them up and bring them closer to shore so the 129th's helicopters can reach them and fly lyra to a hospital.

>> it's cramped and uncomfortable positions. they're very far out to sea. but everyone is doing fine at the moment. >> reporter: a relative in san diego is very worried about the family. >> i just want to make sure the baby is okay and find out what was wrong with the baby because she's 1. and i'm a mom. so my instinct is just make sure the baby's okay and then my next thought is, what's going to happen now? >> reporter: the navy ship is expected to arrive either tonight or sunday morning. then it should be just a few more hours before lyra can be airlifted to the mainland. from moffett field, ama daetz, abc 7 news. the teenager who ran over and killed a father and daughter in concord two years ago is now being sued by the victim's family. in april of 2012, 17-year-old david rosen was driving more than 70 miles an hour. his suv swerved onto the sidewalk hitting and killing 41-year-old solomon nuri and his 9-year-old daughter.

the suit also names rosen's parents. he will be released from prison in two years. his father would not comment on the lawsuit. a santa clara county sheriff's deputy is looking for the public's help to raise funds for his baby daughter who's battling cancer. a fund has been set up for her who had surgery monday to remove a cancerous kidney. organizers of the account which was set up yesterday are trying to raise $10,000. for a link, visit news about the pillowcase rapist. a san jose judge ruled 63-year-old christopher hubbart will live in a southern california community in palmdale after being released from state custody. hubbart convicted and paroled several times admitted to raping as many as 40 women. he moved to the bay area on

parole in 1979 and assaulted 16 women. he was convicted again and then paroled briefly to claremont in 1993. hubbart's been in state custody since 1996. san francisco police have confirmed threats have been made against the department following a fatal officer-involved shooting. a 28-year-old was shot and killed by officers last month in bernal heights park. police say he pulled out a stun gun and pointed it at officers, who thought it was a real handgun. an anonymous threat promised revenge on the officer's death. san francisco will be holding a gun buyback today. it's the drive-through kind. from 9:00 to it can, people can go to the new grocery outlet store. participants must have the unloaded guns in the trunk of their car. guns in working condition up to five per person or car will be

exchanged for $100 cash, no questions asked. b.a.r.t. is looking everywhere it can, even on the internet to find the parts needed to get trains moving at full speed again. an equipment problem that began yesterday morning means trains must be driven manually instead of their usual automated mode through the trans bay tube. problem is, nobody makes the speed-monitoring device anymore. trains were delayed for much of the day yesterday. a sunny day today. >> it is brightening up around the bay except for our friends in santa rosa and napa. but elsewhere, plenty of sunshine. exploratorium camera, where it's still cool. 50 degrees downtown. we'll continue to climb into the low 60s here. but that is nothing. wait till you see the seven-day. i'll be back with that in a minute. incredible surveillance video of a tornado tearing through a neighborhood. and you'll never guess what the twister was carrying. and millions of social security numbers stolen and

abc 7's alex perez has the latest from the military base in texas. >> reporter: this morning, an exclusive look at sergeant jonathan westbrook, reuniting with his family overnight for the first time since he nearly lost his life at fort hood. westbrook's father drove ten hours from mississippi to be with his son. >> you think if your son is overseas, your worry something could happen to him. but he was right here at home on base. >> that is beyond my ability to express or describe to you. my son was deployed to afghanistan last year. and he came back here to a u.s. military installation that's secure and almost lost his life and got wounded. >> reporter: sergeant westbrook was one of the first people shot, twice in the chest and twice in the arm. >> we walked the floor.

we cried. we prayed. we allowed ourselves to think of the very worst. >> reporter: lopez had been in the office shortly before the shooting asking for a leave of absence form when he was told to return for the form the following day, lopez apparently lost it and stormed out. >> he came back with a gun and opened fire. >> reporter: the gunfire killing staff sergeant carlos rodriguez, sergeant timothy owens and sergeant first class danny ferguson. his fiance says he was killed while holding a door shut trying to protect a room filled with military personnel. >> since wednesday, we've just been to hell and back. >> the federal government and several states are investigating the illegal sale of personal information of as many as 200 million americans. the theft of social security numbers and bank account data is linked to a vietnamese man who pleaded guilty to selling personal information fenlt the man posed as a private investigator. he was even hired as a contractor for a website could

tunnels. each runs between warehouses on each end. on monday, agents smashed through a hatch door. it is 70 feet straight down to the tunnel below. agents found the second tunnel equippeded with a tiered electric rail system. agents spent months investigating. they've now discovered and shut down seven of them in the last two years. happening today, advocates in san jose plan to hold a rally, protesting deportations. it's all part of a national day of action for deportation relief. advocates are calling on congress and president obama to halt the moves which they say have neared 2 million under this administration. attendees at today's rally fernando chavez.

a federal grand jury has returned an indictment in the corruption case against state senator leland yee. senator yeah along with 26 others are named in the indictment which was released yesterday. most of them were arrested last week on a criminal complaint filed by federal prosecutors who have since taken the case to the grand jury. the indictment supersedes the complaint. but the charges remain virtually the same. it does add three new defendants and an additional charge against yee who is accused of fraud and conspiracy for trading his political influence for cash, in one case, trying to hook up an undercover fbi agent with an arms leader. chow is being held without bail on charges that include $2.3 million in money laundering. it was judgment day again for disgraced san francisco politician ed jew. a judge allowed jew to spend one

month of his original one-year sentence for perjury in county jail. jew was released from federal custody in february after serving almost five years on a bribery conviction. his lawyer says jew will spend time now helping programs in chinatown. >> work with older people who need help, with younger people who need education. >> the judge originally imposed a 60-day sentence on jew but is allowing him to be released 30 days early on good behavior. he's been ordered to perform about 2,500 hours of community service. check this one out. home security video showing the power of a tornado. you can see the winds picking up speed quickly in the dallas area on thursday, leaves and other small items start to whip up. but then, big stuff like por porta-pottis start flying

san francisco's been stuck at 49. 51 in the south bay. look at the cloud cover. 52. it is going to be a breezy and gusty day at the shoreline as high pressure continues to build in. the view from mt. tam, santa rosa, low 40s with the fog. napa, 44 by the delta. in concord, 46 degrees. we will be looking at the changes throughout the day today, feeling more springlike and certainly warmer. it's a couple of degrees cooler for you over into the east bay around hayward. you were only about 59 yesterday. 30 degrees colder in concord with much more significant cooling up in santa rosa. here is lake tahoe where we have a few clouds drifting by. temperatures today will be climbing up to the springlike standards. all winter long, highs were near 50. today, another day of about 50. so partly cloudy. patchy fog this morning. sunny and warmer today by about 10 degrees. through the second half of your

weekend, another 10 degrees of warming. but the warmest days, monday and tuesday, the winds are going to totally slack off and we'll get numbers near 70 at the beaches. so today with building high pressure, we will have some gusty winds at times out of the northwest. and that will keep the temperatures cool at our coast. but elsewhere, we'll warm to pretty seasonal readings today. san jose coming in at 68. los gatos, 70 today. and on the peninsula, mid-60s for san mateo. lower 60s, half moon bay. as we go into san francisco this afternoon, about average. plenty of sunshine. 62 for you. up in the north bay, here are the cool coastal numbers with 58 in bodega bay, 59 at stinson. but calistoga, wine country, upper 60s to near 70 and into the east bay, this is what i mean with that warming today from oakland, 66, as well as richmond, berkeley, nice spring day. plenty of sunshine with numbers

in the upper 60s from the san ramon valley to pittsburg today. the radar will show increasingly warm temperatures. mid-70s around the bay. warming at the coast. and then we're really looking at hot weather inland. low to mid-80s. cool at the coast on wednesday. cooler for everyone on thursday. friday, looking back to seasonal norms, it looks like, by then. have to check the calendar because it's been sort of wild. the rain was nice, though. >> it really was. thank you, lisa. today, a new patrol combat ship is being commissioned. the navy calls it the warship of the future. it's lighter and faster than a destroyer with technology that makes it more flexible. the ships are designed to operate in shallow waters close to shore. new technology allows them to

this is for the third straight year. he wins $100. he'll participate in the national j.o.w. in mid mai. two other bay area students finished in second and third. in fact, nine out of the ten final contestants are from the bay area. a bracelet stolen from a south bay home 30 years ago is now back with its rightful owner. this bracelet and other pieces of jewelry were recovered during a traffic stop in february. the redwood city police department posted this photograph on its pinterest page. and within eight hours, three people called with information to identify the owner. the owner says the bracelet has a lot of sentimental value. it's the fourth person reunited with stolen property since the

could be gusty. mid-60s to upper 60s around the bay with near 70. warm-up for everyone today. but we're talking about summertime weather headed our way as soon as tomorrow. details coming up. we have developing news right now this morning. china's xinhua news agency reports a chinese ship searching for malaysia airlines flight 370 has detected a pulse signal. no word yet if it's connected to the flight. the report comes as recovery crews looking for the missing jet face a new time crunch to find it. batteries in the black boxes that give off audible pings are only guaranteed to last 30 days. that means the pings could fall silent tomorrow. high-tech equipment aboard ships searching the deep waters are being dragged through the indian ocean hoping to catch some of the pinging. the plane disappeared four weeks ago after leaving kuala lumpur for beijing. as abc 7 news reporter wayne

freedman found out in alameda, it won't be impossible to find it. >> reporter: it's a contraption that's a remotely operated vehicle that could help find and recover malaysia flight 370. >> different rigging techniques we use. we can bring up pieces that are larger. >> reporter: liz taylor runs deep ocean exploration in alameda. she's familiar with the difficulties of searching in deep water for black boxes. it took two years to achieve success with air france flight 447 from 16,000 feet beneath the atlantic. >> you have to consider the ocean currents, the depth of the area it's in. it is the proverbial needle in the haystack. >> reporter: a dark, wet one in extreme conditions. >> 16,000 pounds per square in bearing down on everything. >> reporter: the challenge will be even tougher than an

proposal would shrink opportunity and make it tougher for hardworking americans to get ahead. in his weekly address, the president says paul ryan's budget gives massive tax cuts to the rich. >> the republican budget begins by handing out massive tax cuts to households making more than $1 million a year. then to keep from blowing a hole in the deficit, they'd have to raise taxes on middle-class families with kids. next their budget forces deep cuts to investments that help our economy create jobs. >> the president says republicans would also take away insurance from 7 million people who enrolled through his health care law and would gut financial protections. a concord police officer charged with burglary and elder abuse after taking drugs from a seniors complex has resigned from the department. matthew switzer made his first court appearance yesterday.

he's being held on $480,000 bail. switzer is accused of entering a senior housing complex and stealing a prescription drug from residents. he's scheduled for arraignment on tuesday. 47 badly needed officers have joined the oakland police department. the largest-ever group of recruits to graduate and one of the most diverse. officials also said it was the largest crowd ever to pack the psychotic right center. they survived six weeks of boot camp at the academy. there are now 669 officers in the ranks of the department. experts say oakland needs more than 900 officers to properly serve the city. the new recruits hit the streets starting today to begin six months of field training. their training begins the same day oakland mayor jean kwan is holding a town meeting on public safety. she will talk about improving work within the school system.

today's town hall is from 10:00 to 12:30 at fremont high school and free child care will be provided. as california schools revamp to adjust to new state standards, the exploratorium in san francisco is ahead of the curve. the museum is working with a local school district on a pie ne pioneering program that combines language and science. how hands-on learning ventures are crossing into new territory. >> reporter: you guys ready to be careful observers today? when you think about learning english, you might not immediately think of snails. but snails can be very effective teachers, or at least teachers aids. this is a school in sonoma. 85% of the students here speak spanish as their primary language at home. the range of english skills in this class varies widely but the language barrier is being

crossed. >> it's pretty cool. >> reporter: the exploratorium is working with the school district to use science as a tool for improving english. in this lesson, students design their own experiments to find out about snail behavior. >> this one is coming over here. >> a teacher has a huge role in this. but it's a different role than standing up and giving all the information to the students. it's really engaging the learner and taking responsibility for their learning. >> we're trying to figure out if the snail can get out of the maze. >> kids are messing around with stuff, trying to figure out what's going on with it and then once their curiosity is activated, they want to learn more. they want to learn the vocabulary, the academic words that go along with what they're seeing. >> reporter: does it go in or close? >> close. >> reporter: many of these third-graders have been getting this kind of lesson since

kindergarten. but a number of studies indicate most california elementary schools offer very little science and kids with limited english skills get even less. that's why the exploratorium has been working with sonoma valley for six years, fine-tuning teachers and training materials so this program can be replicated around the country. each box is full of everything a teacher needs to make a wide variety of science lessons come alive. the money for all this is from private foundations and the u.s. department of education. this year, the program is even expanding to preschool. >> look underneath. it started out as a project for english language learners but really has grown to a project that accommodates all kinds of learners and all kinds of language because everyone needs support with learning academic language. >> this part right here is the anten antenna. >> abc 7 is the exploratorium's official television partner.

we have a new indicator of just how deep the california drought has become. this video is from huntington lake in the high sierra east of fresno. it's blanketed with snow from the recent storm but it's only at a third of its capacity. huntington lake is known as one of the country's best lakes for sailing. but yesterday one of the summer's big events, the high sierra reguligata, was canceled the first time in 60 years. here's a picture from last week of luhuntington lake. we had rain recently. there's snow in the sierra right now. >> thank goodness for the rain. that winter going offshore big-time in the days ahead. not today.

this very focused teen is for the first time in his life, undecided. in oakland, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> incredible. it's 8:48. we're looking ahead to a sunshiney day. >> that's right. the clouds still hanging down in the south bay. where they are, they've been sort of stuck in the valleys. but they will clear. and that's something the north bay valleys, live doppler 7 hd, just showing the radar on top of mount st. helena and around san jose. we have looking at the fog up through the santa rosa area and napa. but here's a look at santa cruz where it's been nice and sunny all morning long. temperatures range from the upper 40s in los gatos to 51 with the clouds in san jose. 49 in the city. and going for a high here today in the mid-60s. so one of the warmer beaches because actually the beaches will be quite breezy around our

neighborhood and certainly up in the north bay as well. another vantage point for you, we're looking at low 40s, santa rosa. 46 in concord. should be a very nice spring afternoon. we're going to get quite hot in the days ahead. in fact, tomorrow it's going to feel hot around here in the east bay valleys. here's a look at the clouds in the south bay. a little bit of fog for you with partly cloudy skies. sunny and warmer today. by about 10 degrees for most of you. and then another 10 degrees of warming inland and around the bay. only about 5 degrees of warming tomorrow for the coast. and that's fine because it's going to be in the 70s by monday and tuesday. and warmer days. in fact, the winds slack and the warmest days should be monday and tuesday with wednesday still warm in the east bay valleys. high pressure is well off the coast but continues to build into the eastern pacific. that allows for the warming trend, the significant warming trend throughout the state. so starting out with temperatures just in the 20s in

the sierra nevada, going for a high of 50 today. 60 in the southern sierra, plenty of sunshine in los angeles. 71. and here are the cool coastal numbers. in the low 60s for monterey. high temperatures around the bay today will be about average with low 60s, half moon bay. gusty northwest winds around point reyes today. could be up to 25 miles an hour. and we'll see mid-60s return for richmond and oakland. fremont today, 67 degrees. so with all of that rain, boy, was it welcome. and we are going to look for the east bay to dry out. hopefully a game today over in oakland with low to mid-60s from about 1:00 through 4:00. so a nice, mild afternoon. but by tomorrow, we're looking for these long period swells out of the northwest to provide dangerous rip currents and the waves from the sonoma county coast all the way down to monterey. keep that in mind with the warmer temperatures at the coast, it will be a popular place to be. the accuweather seven-day

forecast, 60 to 70 day. breezy winds at the shoreline. tomorrow, warmer. and numbers will be near 80 inland. monday and tuesday, a stronger offshore push. looking at maybe mid-80s. slightly cooler wednesday. but really isn't until thursday that everyone cools off. still above average. more clouds by friday. >> looks all right to me. thanks, lisa. in sports, this afternoon, madison bumgarner starts for the giants. yesterday, san francisco won their third straight road game. abc 7 news sports director larry beil has the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, everybody. the dodgers held their home opener yesterday in l.a. for all intents and purposes, it was over in half an inning. the giants ruined the day spoiling the afternoon for their archrivals. the dodger highlight came in pregame. vin scully beginning his 65th season as the dodgers broadcaster. he handed off the first pitch to

sandy colfax. four players all knocked in runs. it was 6-0 giants after one. they should have started colfax. giants go on to win 8-4. the a's/mariners game postponed last night because of poor field conditions. the tarp wasn't on the infield when it rained overnight on thursday leaving it spongy. the field ruled too dangerous to play on. fans fuming with the cancellation, extremely embarrassing for the a's and the grounds crew. no makeup day has been announced yesterday. the a's' gm said, quote, it was an unfortunate misinterpretation of the forecast. you think? with seven games left in the regular season, the warriors trying to lock down the six spot in the west. no andrew bogut or david lee. but andre iguodala showed up.

here are the winning numbering from last night's mega millions draw. 1, 15, 10, 54, one ticket purchased in los angeles did match all six numbers for the top prize. but a ticket bought in union city at island pacific supermarket matched five of the numbers. that ticket, worth more than $233,000. happening today, athletes from san jose state university will be in myrtle beach to compete in the world cup. the team received its first-ever invitation to compete in the world cup of the harry potter-based sport in south carolina. the event is the largest and hosts the top 80 teams in the world. san jose state is the first team in the csu system to be invited. good luck to the team. we don't need any weather luck. rain would be lucky but not going to happen. >> not going to happen. a few clouds left over. in santa cruz, nice and sunny all morning long.
