crew reached the family yesterday with medication for the sick girl. the uss vandergriff is expected to reach the sailboat later today. >> eight people on the san francisco bay had to be rescued from their burning boat today. lisa amin gulezian is live in sausolito with he details. reporter: i'm standing near the army corps of engineers dock and that's what is left of the boat that caught on fire today. right now a barge is on its way here with a crane to pull it out of the water. the 5-foot five-er glass motor boat left the marina at 11:30 this morning. three adults and five children onboard. an hour into the trip when the boat was south of the richmond bridge, the owner started seeing smoke coming from the ventses. he called the coast guard. he was instructed to get life vests an everyone, get in the water and wait for help. the owner fired flares into the air so other boaters would know they were in trouble.

>> he shot two up in the air, didn't get any attention. the third shot he fired across the bow of a boat that was going by and they came over and plucked them out of the water. >> you can see the boat was engulfed in flames. eight people were in the water for five minutes. everybody was checked out by medics and deemed okay. the fire department came in on a fire boat and put out the fear. they never boarded the motor boat because it was just too dangerous. firefighters hear two explosions, which could have been the gas tanks exploding. the people onboard the burning boat were taken to -- back to the marina, and that's what your looking at right now. it will take some time to get the boat out of the water. air bags will have to be put underneath it and the boat flipped over and taken away. >> at least everybody is safe. a potential breakthrough

tonight in the search for a missing malaysia airlines flight 370. a chinese ship has reportedly detected electronic pulses that could be coming from the jet's black box. a black box detector deployed the chinese ship picked up the signal in the southern indian ocean this morning. a chinese news agency is reporting numerous floating objects were spotted. australian facials were not able to verify if they were from the 777. >> a brave convenience store clerk says it was adrenaline that helped him stop an armed man from robbing his store. we're live with more on that. reporter: to a remarkable story. the robber's gun was not loaded but at the time the 7-eleven clerk did not know that. what he did was amazing and caught on camera. the man in this video is about to rob a san leandro convenience store. chances are he didn't expect a

clerk like mark to be on the job. >> i was a little nervous at first, and then it was like, adrenaline just kicks and, you don't think about it, just react. reporter: mark is not sharing his last name. the robber wearing a mask walked into the 7-eleven and confront mark. >> he demanded money. i had my hands up and he started to swing the gun back and forth. when the gun got close to him, i saw the opportunity and grabbed it from both ends and yanked it out of his hands. >> as mark grabs the gun from the suspect and doesn't let go. the startled man makes a run for it, chased by another employee right out the door. >> i thought about me safety. that's why i kept my eye on the gun. i took it away from him when i saw the opportunity. >> police don't recommend confronting anyone with a weapon. >> obviously not something we advocate that the regular person

does. it's extremely dangerous. but at the same time, in this case it worked out. >> an amazing thing. do you feel like a hero? no heroes are people who go and rescue other people in danger, not trying to protect themselves. reporter: the suspect described at a 6'0" tall man has not been caught. mark has been on the job three months and will return to his job but went be doing this again in san leandro. abc7 news. oakland police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found near a pop already rec center. photographers found the victim at 6:30 this morning near the francis smith center on park boulevard. investigators say there was apparent trauma to the woman's body. the death is being investigated as a homocide. her identity has not been released. a colorado woman will spend the next 41 years in prison for killing her mother-in-law who was from san francisco. 20-year-old elizabeth rainey

pleaded guilty to second degree murder charges in the murder of her husband's mother a year ago. investigators say she threw exercise weights at her mother-in-law, and a stabbed her >> a coalition of east bay leaders unveiled in the soon is going up at airports, transit centers, bars and hospitals throughout alameda county to raise awareness about the issue. they must place antitrafficking notices as part of legislation to crack down on the growing problem. >> often times the victim of trafficking is not making the report. it can be something in the community who sees something. a neighbor who is looking at someone who works in the house as a nanny who never comes out of the house. the signs provide a number to call to report suspected

trafficking. the city of berkeley and the university are urging community members and students tonight to get a measles vaccination. a second student has been diagnosed. the university clinic was open today to administer vaccines. the student rode b.a.r.t. from oakland to berkeley, then was in class this week. health officials say an unknown number of people may be infected because of that. nearly 200 guns are off san francisco streets this evening thanks to a very popular buyback events. city residents handed in all types of guns in the parking lot of this grocery outlet store. the event was organized by city leaders and community groups in an effort to reduce gun violence in the city. residents were given $100 for every pistol, shot gun and rifle they turn in and were given $200 for assault rifles, no questions asked. >> people inherited weapons, forgot they're in their closets. we don't want burglars to fine them because they'll sell them

repairs are underway to fix an equipment problem blamed for day-long b.a.r.t. delays. a box that regulates train speeds malfunctioned just outside the oakland station. a complete fix is exhibited this evening. b.a.r.t. says there are no serious delays today. five minutes for treasons headed to the transbay tube. >> new video from inside the two eye ban don'ted drug smuggling tunnels found near the u.s.-mexico border. one 600 yards, the other 700,

were found this week. incredibly both have rail systems 70 feet underground. smugglers covered the entrance with something out of the movie "the great escape." >> they used a unique clamp system that held some material in place, and then they painted it to make it look like concrete, and then they put a large piece of industrial equipment over it to conceal it. drug agents actually met armed runners of the mexican military inside one of the tunnels. they were asked to go back. a 73-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the drug smuggling. seven san francisco teenagers are back home after taking an eye-opening journey to connect with their africaian heritage. they were in ghana meeting with locals there and learning about the journeys some africans face when coming to america. they all grew up in san francisco's bay view district. it's part of the police

>> a new study reveals an interesting trend in real estate. home owners becoming landlords. usually when buying a new home people sell the old win and use the equity for a down payment. not necessarily the case anybody. the real estate web site found 40% of home owners will rent out their original home. makes sense given that interest rates are so low. refinancing enables the house to be represented for more than it costs the owners each month. the down side, fewer homes will be for sale. a new report suggests google is working on a television box called android tv. companies are already working on apps for it. android tv will compete with apple tv, roku, tivo and fire

temperatures climbed up into the 80s. here's a look at the overnight lows. in the north bay, those protected valley areas, that's where the temperatures will be the coolest overnight. the closer to the coast as well as the bay, temperatures start to moderate. half moon bay, light fog may sneak? san francisco overnight, 49. this is going to be the setup. high pressure starting to build in, fair-weathermaker pushing the storm track to the north. it will park itself here for the next four to five days so each day temperatures will gradually begin to warp warm up. the next couple of days will be beach weather but we have a beach hazard in effect tonight and throughout the day on sunday, as we're looking for moving northwest swell, will start to pick up. there's a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. so keep that in mind as you head
