new video tonight as rescuers rushed to save a sick 1-year-old strand at sea. tonight we're learning more about what the bay area crews heading out to save the family are facing. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. one-year-old lira kaufman's condition has stabilized tonight but she still needs immediate medical treatment. her parents eric and charlotte brought her on an around-the-world trip when she fell srsly ill. the rescue is happening about 1,000 miles off cabo san lucas, mexico. abc news reporter nick smith is live tonight at moffett field with the latest on this developing story. nick? >> reporter: ama, good evening. new information and new video of the 129th rescue wing springing into action. >> the 1-year-old ended up being

sick, and we were tasked to go down there. >> reporter: team leader tech sergeant justin shook has successfully completed hundreds of recovery missions. >> my job is to help people that can't help themselves. >> reporter: members of his team are off the coast of mexico right now to save a baby girl. he says it's a mission that's just as important. >> the main issue especially with children is they do really well for a long time and they crash. and that's what we're worried about. >> reporter: take a look. this is dramatic new video. four members of the 129th rescue wing parachuting into the pacific ocean. one jumping right after the other. the mission of their multistage operation is clear but not simple. bring a 1-year-old girl who became seriously ill on a sailboat to shore for treatment. >> we train hard to have these capabilities, and we want to go and help. because people don't mean to get in bad situations. >> reporter: the team boarded the sailboat and stabilized the little girl, but the "rebel heart," seen here in video from the family's website, became disabled. so tonight the kaufmans and the rescue team wait for a navy ship

to arrive from san diego. the vessel will pick them up and bring them closer to shore so the 129th helicopter can reach them and fly lira to a hospital. a complicated and dangerous mission in practically the middle of nowhere. the kaufman family along with their 3-ye sick d their sick 1-year-old were only two weeks into a journey into the south pacific. their journey has now taken an unexpected turn. at moffett air field nick smith, abc 7 news. >> nick, thank you for that update. new at 11:00, the highway patrol is investigating a freeway shooting that injured two people in the east bay tonight. the victims drove themselves here to doctors medical center in san pablo. the chp says the men were shot along the eastbound 580 between regatta way and 23rd avenue in richmond around 8:30. officers called the doctors after the victims showed up there. >> when we arrived on scene, we found the victim's vehicle and the two victims were in an emergency room. >> no one has been arrested in

connection with the shooting. the chp is still trying to figure out whether the victims were targeted or if this was a random attack. oakland police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found near a popular rec center. officers found the victim at 6:30 this morning near the francis smith center on park boulevard near 3rd avenue. investigators say there was apparent trauma to the woman's body. the death is being investigated as a homicide. the woman's identity has not been released. police in modesto are trying to unravel the circumstances that led to three girls being hospitalized with stab wounds overnight. investigators say a 13-year-old girl stabbed another 13-year-old and an 11-year-old before turning the knife on herself. the incident happened early this morning just after 1:00. one of the girls has since been released from the hospital. nother two are listeditical co. critical condition. a dramatic rescue today near tiburon after a sudden and dangerous boat fire. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin

gulezian has been following the story and joins us live from the sausalito marina tonight with more. lisa? >> reporter: ama, the claim barge has been here for four hours. moving the burnt boat has been quite the undertalking. it's currently underneath that blue tarp behind me. while investigators done think this was a suspicious fire they do say it's crucial they find out what caused it. 30 feet of burnt fiberglass is pulled from sausalito marina tonight. it was once a motorized pleasure craft owned by this man in the black sweatshirt. earlier today it was cruising along the bay carrying five children and three adults when the boat's owner saw smoke coming from the vents. he called for help. >> because they said it was pretty hot and they really didn't know what to do, the coast guard asked them to put on life jackets and then get in the water. >> reporter: but before jumping into the cold water the owner made another distress call to a

nearby boater. >> the owner of the boat was able to fire a warning flare toward the other boat, grab his attention as they jumped in. the other boat came over and picked him up. >> reporter: they were in the water for about five minutes, but just after they jumped fire consumed the boat. firefighters heard two loud explosions and were forced to stay back. they fought the blaze by eventuallats. from their fire they eventually put the fire out and pulled the boat to a more remote area. long-time boaters can't stop talking about what they call a rare situation on the water. >> outrageous. i've never heard anything like that. a fire on a boat is devastating. it's really dangerous. >> i'm curious what caused the fire. and i imagine that's why they're trying to get it out of the water, so they can investigate and find that out. >> reporter: the boat will be taken to san rafael tonight, and investigators will take a closer look at the remains tomorrow. in sausalito, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. there is renewed urgency tonight in the search for that

missing malaysian jetliner. chinese media reported today that a chinese ship detected electronic pulses in the south indian ocean not far from where an intense search is ongoing, but tonight the head of the multinational search is stressing that while it's an encouraging sign the source of the sounds is not yet verified. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has the latest. >> reporter: the reports that a chinese ship heard a pulse signal using the same frequency emitted by black boxes could be the break the world has been waiting for. >> if that is sustained, in other words, if they heard that on a continuous basis, then they may actually have something. >> reporter: a chinese plane also reported seeing debris near where the pulse was heard. now the multinational fleelt of planes and ships scouring the waters of the south indian ocean are in a race to find that ping quickly before the batteries in the flight and cockpit voice recorders fall silent. >> i think the warranty runs out probably on sunday. we may get four or five days after that. and if they're really good batteries, you might get a week

or so longer. but we're getting very close. >> reporter: two ships launched underwater sensors again on saturday to listen for the pings, but they'll need to be within one mile of the sounds to hear them. a daunting task when the search area covers 83,000 square miles. the size of kansas. malaysian authorities vow not to give up. >> we will continue to search with the same level of vigor and intensi intensity. we owe this to the families on board. >> it's been nearly a month since malaysia flight 370 with 239 souls on board vanished without a trace. while there's been no confirmation of a link between the reported signals and the missing boeing 777, there is hope. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. malaysia airlines flight 370 took off from kuala lumpur's airport en route to beige almost a month ago, on march 8th. but as we know, mysteriously vanished. five days later, on march 13th, a bombshell revelation emerged suggesting the plane flew four

hours longer than originally thought. then on march 15th malaysia's prime minister announced deliberate action caused the plane to disappear. the focus of the search then shifted to the indian ocean. well, it was a beautiful day here in the bay, and it's still a nice night out tonight. let's head to abc 7 news meteorologist leigh glaser. >> terrific evening out in. clear skies. a little breezy near the bay as well as the peninsula. a little bit of light fog being developed. as you see there on live doppler 7 hd right off the coast. but folks, get ready for another beautiful day tomorrow. in fact, today just terrific. san san rafael, a high today of 68 degrees. santa rosa. it was 70 in antioch. 67 in livermore as well as san jose. in san francisco today, 61 degrees. temperatures will come up, some close to 80 tormg. we'll take a look at the accuweather sunday forecast. a convenience store clerk in

san leandro is being called a hero tonight after turning the tables on a would-be robber. surveillance video tells the story. this man wearing a mask walked into a 7-eleven last night. he confront the the clerk with a gun. the clerk, who only gave his first name, cooperated at first. >> he demanded money. i had my hands up. and he started to swing the gun back and forth. well, when the gun got close to him i saw the opportunity and i grabbed it from both ends and i just yanked it out of his hands. i thought about my safety. that's why i kept the eye on the gun. but it's like when i saw the opportunity to get it away from him i just -- i took it away from him. >> reporter: the would-be robber ran away. police do not recommend doing what the clerk did but are glad it turned out well in this case today took nearly 200 guns off san francisco streets. city residents lined up to drop off guns at the parking lot of this visitation valley grocery outlet store. anyone who drops off a handgun, rifle, or shotgun receives $100 per weapon, $200 for four

berkeley tonight say an unknown number of people may have been exposed to a uc student infected with measles. the cal student, the second in two months to be diagnosed with measles, not only rode from oakland to berkeley on b.a.r.t. but also attended classes this week. health officials opened up a clinic today on campus. they say there is not an outbreak. >> we are seeing more cases in california than we've seen in prior years. and that's related primarily to some outbreaks that are going on overseas. so there's an outbreak in the philippines, and there are higher rates of measles in other countries than there are here. >> since january 1st, california has reported 50 cases of measles. last year at this time the count was four. tonight b.a.r.t. is still trying to fix a pesky device that's causing a five-minute delay through the transbay tube. it's the same problem that caused friday's delays. the mux box. the box regulates train speeds. it malfunctions yesterday just outside the west oakland station. trains traveling to san francisco are experiencing the delays. starting monday, it's going

to cost you more to cross the golden gate bridge. a $1 toll hike goes into effect. rates for fastrak will be $6. and pay by plate will be 7. the toll will rise again by 25 cents in july of 2015 and another 25 cents every year until july of 2018. the district says it's facing a $142 million shortfall over five years. a group of san francisco teens is back home tonight after an eye-opening journey to connect with their african heritage. the group spent the last nine days in akra, ghana, learning about the journey and coming here to america. the teens are all from san francisco's bay view hunter's point area. >> everyone sos kind to each other. it's my brother, my sister, my family. everyone's one there. no one's different. everyone loves each other. everyone's so kind to each other. i think that's definitely what was most different and shocking to me. >> the trip is part of the police department's operation

genesis initiative to improve the lives of inner city kids and teach them valuable life lessons. the recreational salmon fishing season opened today, and marine conservationists are asking boaters to slow down. the reason, they're killing endangered california sea otters. otter strikes are relatively common in and around the moss landing harbor near monterey bay. conservationists say boaters can decrease the odds of a strike simply by obeying the speed limit. thousands of runners will be hitting the streets tomorrow for the rock and roll half marathon. it begins on the great highway at 6-30 a.m., goes across the golden gate bridge and ends at the civic center. this is only the second year the race is being held in san francisco. and for a look at what the weather's going to be like tomorrow, for that let's get to leigh glaser. >> you'd better get those sneakers on, tie up the laces early tomorrow, get out there, because midday, temperatures 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon warming up.

as temperatures near the coast near 70 degrees. inland temperatures in the mid to low 80s. we'll start off with tonight with the low clouds and fog kind of banking right near the coast by early tomorrow t spot will coolest spot will be up toward cloverdale as well as napa. 40 degrees there. san francisco 49. 48 san mateo. interior east bay locations. antioch 48. but livermore dipping down to 43 degrees by early tomorrow morning. and this is pretty much going to be the setup. high pressure building in. and you can get a sense of what it's doing. it's just pushing that storm track, the jet stream well to the north of us. so we'll look for this high to continue to dominate the bay area weather pattern for at least the next four o'five days. so look for dry conditions as we head through next week. warmer each day. and it looks like as i said there by tuesday and wednesday temperatures in the mid to low 80s. now, i know tomorrow's going to be a beach day, but we do have some precautions out there. beach hazard is in place. risk of rip currents as well as

we have breaking news tonight from solano county. fairfield police are on the scene of a multiple shooting on orchid street. happened about an hour ago. the fairfield daily republic is reporting that up to four people were injured and the shooting may have been the result of a party that got out of control. in tonight's other headlines, a rescue operation is under way 1,000 miles off the coast of mexico to save a sick 1-year-old stranded on a sailboat. california national guardsmen parachuted down to the boat to

deliver medicine to the girl. the highway patrol's investigating a freeway shooting that injured two men in richmond. the men drove themselves to doctor's medical center in san pablo. the chp is trying to determine whether they were targeted. a daring 7-eleven clerk fought off an armed robber at a san leandro convenience store. surveillance video captured the encounter. the clerk managed to wrestle the gun away from the robber, who ran away. police are still looking for that man. three adults and five children jumped from this burning boat near tiburon this afternoon. all of them were rescued out of the bay unharmed after spending about five minutes in the water. now to an incredible reunion. one of the soldiers shot hood, hi hood, hit four times, standing just a few feet from the army specialist when he opened fire, is reunited with his parents. abc news reporter alex flint has the story. >> reporter: the moment sergeant jonathan westbrook has been waiting for. finally reunited with his family since he was shot four times at

fort hood. westbrook's father drove ten hours to see his son. he worried when his son served in afghanistan but never imagined he'd here attacked right here at home. >> he came back here to a u.s. military installation that's secure and almost lost his life and got wounded. you know. it's just unbelievable. >> reporter: for an excruciating seven hours dad knew nothing about his son's condition. >> because we had no information it was like we allowed ourselves to think the very worst. >> reporter: sergeant westbrook was one of the first to come face to face with specialist ivan lopez. the violent spree apparently beginning when lopez asked for a leave of absence form but was told to return the next day to pick it up. moments later he returned with a gun in hand, opening fire over an area nearly two blocks long. >> we may metaphor know why the alleged shooter did what he did. >> reporter: the westbrooks now

back together thanksful and thinking of those who weren't as lucky. >> how grateful are you right now? >> eternally grateful. >> the commander of fort hood says there's evidence of an argument before lopez -- before lopez began shooting but investigators say since lopez killed himself they may never know definitively what set him off. tonight votes are being counted in afghanistan following a huge turnout for the presidential election. an estimated 7 million of the country's eligible voters cast a ballot. that's equal to a 58% turnout. 35% the voters were women. obam people are taking full responsibility for their country as american forces gradually withdraw. immigration advocates rallied around the nation today calling on president obama to stop deportations. immigration supporters are asking the administration to use executive power to end the deportations that separate immigrants living in the country

illegally from their loved ones. mazda is announcing a recall of 42,000 cars because of spiders. yes, real spiders. specifically yellow sack spiders. they build webs in a vent hole which can actually cause a fuel tank to crack and maybe even catch fire. mazda 6 cars models 2010 through 2012 with the 2 1/2 liter engines are the ones being recalled. there's been a lot of attention on general motors and its recalls this week. but what about all of the other recalled cars of all makes and models sitting on used car lots across the country? the problem is buyers with wo never know. nbc news reporter gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: tonight after gmc owner mary barra faced intense grilling on capitol hill -- >> if this is the new gm leadership it's pretty lacking. >> reporter: new questions over recalled cars from other manufacturers as well. still on the road and up for sale without repairs.

more than 3 million of them, many at used car lots. and if you don't check, you might never know. for our abc news investigation we had our producer go undercover to five used car lots to see if salesmen would be up front or knowledgeable about recalled cars. two of the salesmen did mention recalls. >> the cobalt has a recall on it right now. about the ignition switch. >> reporter: but at another dealership with a 2006 recalled cobalt -- >> is it safe? what about safety? >> it's a small car. so being what it is, it's safe. >> there's nothing i need to know about that car? >> nothing. just put a battery in it. i'm as honest as it's going to be. >> how are you? >> we went back to see angelo. >> you said this car was safe. but it actually has a recall. >> well, recalls get recorded once you regist wecar. we don't know that there's a recall. >> well, we pulled it up right here on gm.com. there's the recall. ignition switch replacement.

>> but we don't get these. >> reporter: but it's easy. take that cobalt, for example. we're on gm.com. we just plugged in the vin, the car's i.d. number, and within seconds we see it has a recall. >> reporter: there's no law that requires used car dealers to tell customers about open recalls. but legislators in california and new york are trying to change that. >> moving forward, what do you think you're going to do? >> i'm going to start looking at every vin number to see if there's a recall. >> the national independent auto dealers association says dealers should take extra steps to repair safety-related recalls that they know about. still to come, a warning just in time for tax season. >> an irs scam is exploding, and consumers around the bay area are complaining. i'm michael finney, and i'll show what you to watch out for coming up. and a really big game where the skyscraper-sized game of tetris was played today. hi there, everyone. i'm meteorologist leigh glaser. if you were doing some traveling tomorrow, we'll take you back

a telephone scam based on the april 15th tax deadline is exploding in the bay area tonight. michael finney has been tracking it. he says he's been getting complaints in the 7 on your side office every day. >> reporter: there are a lot of odd phone calls being made to the bay area. michael baucker is playing a recording of one of them for me. >> first of all, i think he's saying warning for this message but i don't really -- it's hard to -- >> reporter: the caller is hard to understand. appears to be reading from a script. and the connection is bad. >> you subscribe to a magazine and get a free phone. i think that's what he's using. >> reporter: and that's why michael called me. >> so when i saw your piece on the irs scams, so it was sort of high in my mind.

and i got this phone call that was very suspicious. >> reporter: frank david got one of these calls too. >> it sounded like a sweat shop. like a boiler-room. >> reporter: here frank plays me a portion of the call. his connection is a bit better than michael's but not by much. >> this message, i need you or the attorney of record to -- >> reporter: any call from the irs telling you you have to pay taxes a certain way or we need to hear from your attorney is not the irs calling. it's not how we do business. >> reporter: that's rafael tolino. he's a spokesperson for the irs. >> in the evolution of a phone scam it's quite sinister and quite nasty where you're getting a call allegedly from the irs. you're not. it's not the irs. the caller, the scammer, says you owe taxes and you need to pay them on a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or credit card. the most common is a prepaid debit card. then the caller, if you don't comply, can be quite insulting and threatening.

i can't do that any more,'cuz i'm missing most of my lung. they did a cat scan of my kidneys, no more kidney stones. that's the good news. "but, we found a spot on your lung." that frankly scared the "hell" out of me. i hadn't smoked in 22 years. how could this happen to me? he said, "well, you know about radon gas?" we'll... you know, i heard about it. he said, "well, the second leading cause of cancer" "in america is radon, 22,000 people a year die from this." i literally left the doctor's office, got a test kit, put it in my house, and our result was 39.8. the upper limit is 4. we got to get this fixed. that was on a monday, and on wednesday, our mitigation system was up and running. well, i think everybody should have their house tested. we'd never know. we'd still be living there. i could get another tumor from it. right now, it's changing my life.
