>> good morning, everyone. i'm scare lynn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, april 6th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. expecting some fog along the peninsula in morning. it is clear. we are looking at cool temperatures in the north bay. 49 in mountain view, 52 in san francisco. a live look from our sutro camera. you probably heard about the advertised warmup and the offshore flow. it does get underway today. the temperatures coming up everywhere, mid-60s to 70s at our coast. mid-70s around the bay and, yes, around 80 inland. well above average. no records, but it looks like the heat will stay around for while. i'll explain next. >> thank you, lisa.

developing news this morning. a u.s. navy warship with a bay area rescue team has reached a sailboat stranded at sea with a sick baby onboard. the baby's conditions as stablized, but she still immediate medical treatment. it happened off the coast of mexico about is thousand miles. they are planned to transfer the baby at dawn. we have the details from moffett field. >> a one-year-old ended up being sick, and we were asked to go down there. >> he has completed hundreds of successful rescue missions. they are off the coast of mexico right now to save a baby girl. >> the main issue, especially

with children, they do really well for long time and then they crash. that's what we are worried about. >> this is dramatic new video. four members of the 129 rescue wing parachuting into the pacific ocean. one jumping right after the other. the mission of their multistage operation is clear, but not simple. bring the one-year-old girl, who became seriously ill on a sailboat, to shore for treatment. >> we train hard and we want to be help because people don't mean to get had into a bad situation. >> they want to stablize the girl. but the navy ship will pick them up and bring them closer to shore so the 129th helicopter can reach them and fly her to a hospital. a complicated and dangerous mission in practically the middle of nowhere. >> the kauffman family, along with their three-year-old and sick one-year-old were only two weeks into a journey into the south pacific. their journey has now taken an

unexpected turn. at months of fieldity airfield, abc7 news. >> the search will continue today for a missing menlo park woman. authorities say 33-year-old woman has not been seen at home since last sunday. surveillance footage from that day shows were walking across a parking lot near a campground and an abandoned rental car in her name was later found in the parking lot. authorities say before leaving home she left a message saying she was going on a day hike, but she did not say where. the chp is investigating a freeway shooting that injured two people in the east bay last night. the victims drove themselves to a medical center in son pap low. the chp said the men were shot between regatta way and 23rd avenue in richmond around 8:30. officers were called to the hospital after the victims showed up there. >> when we arrived on scene, we

found the victim's vehicle and the two victims were in the emergency room. >> no one has been arrested in connect with the shooting. the chp is still trying to figure out weather the victims were targeted or if this was a random attack. oakland police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found near a popular rec center. officers found the victim at 6:30 yesterday morning near the francis smith rec center on park boulevard near third avenue. investigators say there was apparent trauma to the woman's body so her death is being investigated as a homicide. she has not been identified. >> developing news out of solano county where a shooting injured several people. it happened around 10:30 last night around the area of

and or skid streets. it may have been the result of a house party that got out of control. there's no word on the condition of the victims. >> police in modesto are trying to unravel the circumstances that led to three girls being hospitalized with stab wounds yesterday. investigators say a 13-year-old stabbed another 13-year-old and an 11-year-old before stabbing herself. the incident happened early yesterday morning. one of the girls has since been released from the hospital. the other two are listed in critical condition. a dramatic rescue after a dangerous boat fire. abc7 news reporter lisa has details. >> 40 feet of fiberglass is pulled from the sausalito marina. it was a pleasure craft owned by this man in the black

sweatshirt. it was cruz ag long the bay carrying five children and three adults when the boat's owner saw smoke coming from the vents. he called for help. >> because it was pretty hot and they didn't know what to do. i asked him to put on life jackets and then get in the water. >> but before jumping into the cold water, the owner made another distress call to a nearby boater. >> so the owner of the bait was able to fire a warning flare toward the other boat, grab his attention, and the other boat came over and picked him up. >> they were in the water about five minutes but just after they jumped fire consumed the boat. firefighters heard two life explosions and were forced to stay back. they shot water from their fire boats and eventually pulled the water out and brought it to a nearby area. they can't stop talking about a rare situation they have on the water. >> a fire on the boat is

devastating, really dangerous. >> i'm curious what caused the fire and i imagine that's why they are trying to get it out of the water so they can investigate and find out. >> investigators will take a closer look at the remains. in as you leto, lisa amin lease7 news. >> there is renewed urgency this morning in the search for the missing malaysian jetliner. chinese media reported a chinese ship detected pulses in the indian ocean not far from where an intense search is going on but the head of the multi-national search is stressing while it's been encouraging sign, the source of those sounds is not yet verified. abc news reporter chuck sievertson has the latest. >> the reports of a chinese ship her a pulse signal using the same frequency emitted by black boxes could be the break the world has been waiting for. >> this if that is sustained, they heard it on a continuous basis, they may have something.

>> a kind niece plane also reported seeing debris near where the pulse was heard. now the multi-national fleet of planes and ships scouring the south indian ocean are in a race to find the ping quickly before the batteries in the flight and cockpit recorders fall silent. >> i think the warranty runs out sunday. if they are really good batteries we might get a week or so longer but wear getting pretty close. >> two ships were launched to lessen for the pings but they will need to be within one mile of the pings to hear them. a daunting task when the search covers 83,000 square miles, the size of kansas. they said they will not give up. >> we will continue to search. we owe this to the families of those on board. >> it's been nearly a month since malaysia flight 370 with 239 souls on board vanished without a trace.

there's been no link between the signals and the missing 777, there is hope. >> here is the timeline. the flight took off from the airport on route of beijing almost a month ago, march 8th. five days later on march 13 a bombshell revelation emerged, suggesting the plane flew four hours longer than originally thought. then on march 15th malaysian prime minister announced deliberate action caused the plane to disappear and since then the focus on the search has sifted to the indian ocean. back here at home a convenience store clerk in san leandro is being called a hero this morning after turning the tables on a would-be robber. the man wearing a mask walk into a 711 friday night just before midnight, confronting the clerk with a gun.

the clerk tells us he cooperated at first. >> he demanded money. i had my hands up and he started to swing the gun back and forth." when the gun got close to him i saw an opportunity and i grabbed it if both ends and yanked it out of my hands. i thought about my safety about being with the gun, but when i saw the opportunity to get it away from him, i took it away from him. >> well, that would-be robber then ran away. police do not recommend doing what the clerk did, but are glad it turned out well in this case. a gun buy-back event has taken nearly 200 guns off san francisco streets. city residents lined up yesterday to drop off guns at the parking lot of this visitation valley grocery outlet store. anyone who drops off a handgun, rifle or shotgun receives $100 per weapon, $200 for assault rifles. this morning thousands of runners will be hitting the streets for the rock n' roll

half-marathon. it begins at 6:30 this morning and goes across the golden gate bridge and the civic center. this is only the second year the race is being held in san francisco. lisa, it will be dry for the run, but maybe a little on the warm side. >> well, at 6:30 we will be near 50s so it will be comfortable. temperatures will be climbing today. in fact as much as five to seven degrees around the bay area. we are just beginning this warming ten. from emeryville temperatures in the upper 40s and in the mid-70s this afternoon. i'll have the rest of the bay area forecast coming up. >> also ahead, the concerns in the east bay as the number of new measles cases continues to grow. and the new grocery super store opening in the south bay. why not everyone is celebrating despite cheaper prices.

>> welcome back. it's the first sunday of the month. thank you for waking up and joining us early for the abc7 sunday morning news. we have a live look from our roof cam, showing you the beauty of the bay bridge in the background. a warming trend this week. exactly how mild will it be? meteorologist lisa argen along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. officials in berkeley say an unknown number of people may have been exposed to a u. c. student infected with measles. the cal student, the second in two months to be baghdad with measles. not only road from oakland to

berkeley on bart, but also attended classes last week. health officials opened a clinic yesterday on campus. they say there is not an outbreak. >> we are seeing more cases in california than we've seen in prior years and that's related primarily to some outbreaks that are going on overseas. there's an outbreak in the philippines and higher rates of measles in other countries than there are here. >> since january 1 california has reported 50 cases of measles. put that in perspective last year at this time the count was 4. this morning bart is still trying to fix a pesky device that's been causing a five minute delay through the transbay tube. it's the same problem that caused friday's delays. the box regulates trains' speeds. it malfunctioned friday just outside the west oakland station. trains traveling to san francisco are experiencing delays. the future of the grocery business is being played out right here in the bay area.

wal-mart opened the new market in the south bay lift week that promises to speed up shopping, but it's also putting more pressure on the competition. the wall mart market is on mission college boulevard off highway 101 in santa clara. abc7 news reporter david louie takes us inside to show you why they contend smaller is suddenly better. >> this so-called small court grocery only store is one-fourth the side of a full-size wal-mart and represents some of the changes coming to bay area supermarkets. wal-mart said it's designed to get shoppers in and out in 15 minutes during the week and in an hour on the weekends. you can double that in a larger store where you might get held up in a longer checkout line with people buying furniture or appliances. it's also aimed on capitalizing on a shift in consumer shopping. >> you see more and more consumers shopping at the deep discount centers at the low end or going to a specialty retail

on the high end and the middle is getting rationalized. so those are shaking out in the middle. >> shoppers at the market say they will shop less at safeway. >> you have to go where you get a bang for your buck. the store is gorgeous, the variety is good and the variety unbelievable. >> safewhich is facing change too under new ownership. some of the stores may close and some high paid union employees may lose their job. the employees hired at the wal-mart are paid an average at 1:75 an hour while a union journeyman, checker or stocker, earns $21 an hour plus nine dollars an hour in benefits. roger worked at safeway, and he believes the smaller store will give the consumers a big benefit. >> there won't be the huge display and smaller quantities so they are easier to maintain. >> the concept can be deceiving.

it's smaller but it's only 4,000 square feet than a typical safe way store. ultimately consumers have to decide what level service they want. at this wal-mart, for example, there are no butchers and no organic vegetables like other grocery store chains. abc7 news. seven san francisco teenagers are back home after an eye-opening journey to connect with their african heritage. the group spent nine days in africa meeting people there. the teenagers all grew up in san francisco bay view neighborhood. the trip is part of the police department's operation genesis initiative to improve the lives of inner city kids and teach them valuable life lessons. >> they figured it out on their own like, really, man -- the area they like and sometimes a

bad relationship. not giving 100% to school. >> officer johnson and the teen received a hero's welcome from the police chef when they arrived yesterday. for many. teenagers it was their first trip out of the country. marine conversationists are asking voters to slow down with this weekend's opening of recreational salmon season. the reason, they are killing endangered sea otters. sea otters are common around the harbor near monterey bay. conversationists say boaters can decrease the odds of a strike simply by obeying the. and beach-goers ares are urged to other caution in the waters today due to sneak are waves. the national weather service issued a warning about strong waves and currents that can pull swimmers out to see. according to the press democrat, it comes during the first weekend of the recreational

abalone season. the let of sneaker waves is expected to last all day today. lisa, that's a good warning because it is so warm a lot of people will be flock to go the breaches. >> that's right. it was breezy and just in the 60s yesterday but today we are warming up at the beaches. maybe even the upper 70s there or upper 60s half moon bay. but 70s are not far off, monday, tuesday. in fact tuesday should be the warmest day but the flow will switch around and we should get a sea breeze late in the day tuesday. 6:47 the official sunrise. we don't have fog yet but we are specking some along the san mateo coast. that won't last but a couple of hours. our sutro tower camera right now. temperatures ranking from the mid-40s in redwood city. 45 los gatos. and 52 in san francisco. from our roof camera it is clear. the winds are calm. those on-shore winds really

backing off. like more of a northerly gradient today and that will set the stage for a warmup. 44 in napa. good morning, and livermore at 47 degrees. here's look at what you expect in terms of fog. you see right here we are looking at a little bit around half moon bay that could develop in the next couple of hours and then across the bay. but after about 9:00, you know, some really goes out and it will be warmer today everywhere by at least five degrees. so the warming trend continues throughout the next several days. maybe a little fog, but the sunshine won't win out for sure and the warmest days monday and tuesday. so it all depends when the on shore flow kicks back up or the southerly winds. look like late in the day tuesday but we will still be warm wednesday inland with more 80s. records, doesn't look likely but if the high pressure ridge continues to build and slides to

the east we are getting the sustenance and the warming as the air compresses. carolyn, they talk about the beach hazard all day long from the sonoma coast down through monterey. very fast, and we will look for it through the overnight hours. high temperatures today 74 in milpitas to 81 gilroy, 80 los gatos, 66 pacifica. big warmup here. we were just about 60 yesterday. 75 in palo alto and san francisco coming up within 9 degrees today. 69 degrees in the north bay. look for 80 today santa rosa. well above your average. 76 in vallejo. near east bay low to mid-70s. a beautiful day from union city to fremont. you head inland take a look at these numbers. 77 san ramon valley. 80 antioch as well as livermore and brentwood. the accuweather seven-day forecast even warmer tomorrow and tuesday. looking at temperatures in the

here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> care lip, we are mice and clear right now. that's all two it a wind shift. temperatures in the low 50s in san francisco, 44 in napa, but we could see a little bit of fog this morning right here from half moon bay along the san mateo grow coast. but it's not going to last long because these gradients will warm us up today. here's the next couple hours. perhaps some fog and by the afternoon we will see temperatures into the mid-and upper 60s coastside. upper 70s from sonoma and san jose and 80s will arrive for our east bay valves looks like this is just the beginning. i'll have the details of a pretty warm week ahead. that's coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. now to an incredible reunion. one of the soldiers shot at fort hood, hit four times standing just a few feet from the army specialist when he opened fire, reuniting with his parents.

abc news reporter alex perez has the story. >> reporter: the moment sergeant jonathan westbrook has been waiting for, finally reuniting with his family after he was shot four times at fort hood. his father drove ten hours to see his son. he worried when his son served in afghanistan but never imagined he would be attack right here at home. >> he came back here to a u.s. military installation that's secure and almost lost his life and got wounded, you know. it's just unbelievable. >> an excruciating seven hours dad knew nothing about his son's condition. >> because we had no information, it was like that we allowed ourselves to think the very worst. >> sergeant westbrook was one of the first to come face-to-face with specialist ivan lopez. the violent spree beginning when lopez asked for a leave of absence form but was told the next day to pick it up.

moments later he returned with a gun in hand, opening fire over an area nearly two blocks long. >> we may never know exactly why the alleged shooter did what he did. >> westbrooks are now back together, thankful and thinking of those who weren't as lucky. >> how grateful are you right now? >> eternally grateful. >> the commander of fort hood said there is evidence of an argument before the shooting began, but investigators say since ivan lopez killed himself, they may never know definitively what set him off. and today on "this week" the latest on the mass shooting at port hood. we will hear from congressman john carter of texas and the former army chief of staff as the base plans a memorial service wednesday for the shooting victims. can catch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00 this morning. new this morning a wedding at a historic massachusetts site

was cut short following a three-alarm fire. that fire started around 7:15 last night at the lakeview pavilion in foxboro, just as the wedding ceremony concluded. several onlookers say it appears the fire started in the mulch outside before quickly spread to go the building itself. >> pronounced them husband and wife and and they proceeded to go down the aisle one more time. all of a sudden we noticed there were some wisps of smoke. >> fortunately everyone got out safely but the newlyweds are said to be devastated by the whole thing. they have not been named. lakeview pavilion is 101 years old. a georgia archbishop will soon say good-bye to a $2.2 million atlanta mansion. catholic archbishop gregory has decided to vacate the home after receiving backlash from parishioners. he met with several church councils yesterday and had to apologize for using donated funds to build that home.

the archbishop plans to move into another church property in may. as for the mansion, it will be sold and the proceeds will be used to benefit the catholic community. a warning now to residents on the peninsula after a mountain lion sighting. it was spotted in hillsboro just before noon yesterday. mountain lions do tend to avoid confrontation with humans, but the sheriff's office is reminding anyone who sees one to not approach it, especially if they are feeding or with offspring. this is distracted driving awareness month. the u.s. department of transportation has launched a major first-of-its-kind campaign to make all of putts more aware of the dangers of fooling with our smartphones while behind the wheel. >> at any given moment during the day, 660,000 americans are either texting or talking on

their cell phones while driving. that, according to federal transportation officials who unveiled their first-ever national ad campaign targeting the worst offenders, young people. it get their attention it's deliberately dramatic. [crashing sounds] >> a federal survey found 71% of young drivers said they had used the phone or sent a text while driving and 78% read one. >> distraction is the new dui. >> mike ferguson said he's heard it all. >> i was on speakerphone, i only looked down for a sec. the unfortunate thing we hear that in crashes where people are hurt and killed, as well as when we make stops. >> authorities say a driver involved in a double fatality in highway 12 in santa rosa last month said he was distracted by a text message. would this make you thinking device about texting in ryan

springer, a passenger, is taking photos of distracted drivers and spending his own money to put them on bay area billboards. >> we've been involved in this complacency of driving and using your phones and i don't think you realize exactly how dangerous it is. >> there is a nationwide crackdown all month long, but on tuesday the chp will have a special focus day concentrating on catching you in the act. starting tomorrow, it will cost you more to cross the golden gate bridge. a one dollar toll hike goes into effect. rates for fast track will be six dollars, the other 7. the toll are rise none by 25 cents this july of 2015 and another quarter every year until july, 2018. the bridge district officials say they face a $142 million budget sort fall over the next five years unless they increase those tolls. still ahead on the abc7 sunday

>> a northern california golf course is blaming the drought closing down one of their two courses. it's not far from tracy on the outskirts of the bay area. many golfers are sorry to see it go. we get more from reporter wayne freedman. [birds tweeting] >> reporter: it's a place nature and mankind come together to interact and play. >> you are definitely playing on a piece of art. >> there are people who regard golf courses that way, and the latest course designed by jack nicklaus and the hills qualifies. >> the way it sits into the valley and the greens. >> golfers who know and love this course say especially after the recent spring rains it has never looked better. but they better lack fast bus a week and a half ago management turned off the water here. this golf course is about to become a victim of the drought.

>> they need to do desalination plans along the coast is what they need to do. >> both pull water from the california automatic but duck. when the drought hit the state cut off every single drop except what the courses had banked in wetter years. so management had to make a tough choice, one course or the other. and the legend uses 400-acre feet of water per year. >> in terms of dollars that's probably a little more than $800,000. >> to water it? >> to water it. >> so the legend goes, and the ranch course surrounded by homes stays. for superintendent carl king it's like presiding over a loved one with a death sentence. >> the shape of it will still be there. it will take several years to actually be overgrown with the native. and to watch that it is sad for me. >> which means take a long last

52 degrees. from our roof camera we are looking at numbers in the 40s and clear skies. milder in santa rosa and napa this morning. here's a look at the 24-hour temperature change. anywhere from three it five degrees this morning from fairfield to santa rosa. but cooler at the coast. hayward, san carlos and san jose by a couple of degrees. emeryville, your forecast highlights, some morning patchy coastal fog won't last long. and tomorrow and tuesday temperatures maxing out in the mid-80s inland. by tuesday we should get a coastal breeze and perhapscology off the shoreline. then selective cooling on wednesday. it will take until thursday until everyone cools off. the 24-hour temperature change, look where we were yesterday with 60s and one 70-degree reading on this panel. and today numbers coming up anywhere from 8 to 11 degrees with 80 forecasted in santa rosa. how about 69 in san francisco? so well above the average. no records, though. mid-and upper 70s on the
