uconn triumphs over florida to topple the number one seed and wyoming defeats wisconsin with a dramatic three-point buzzer beater. it will be an unlikely national championship not seen in 35 years. ♪ hey, good morning, everybody. also coming up this morning, the royals are on the move. prince william, kate and baby george heading down under. >> george following in his father's footsteps. he took the same trip when he was roughly the same age. and the queen giving special permission to allow will and george to travel together, as typically, two heirs to the throne are not usually allowed to do so. the full report from new zealand. their first stop coming up. another big story from this part of the world.

a possible break in the search for flight 370. first a chinese ship hears two fleeting electronic pulses in the indian ocean. now in a separate area, the australians say they may have heard something as well. it's all happening as the batteries on those black boxes are quickly running out of juice. clayton sandell is in perth, australia, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are the most promising developments since malaysian 370 went missing a month ago. and now the race is on to see if they are legit or just another false lead. overnight, search teams in the air and in the water made an urgent swing to this chinese patrol ship. the crew onboard says it twice detected a signal that might be pings coming from black box recorders. >> this is an important and encouraging lead. but one which i urge you to continue to treat carefully. we are working in a very big ocean and within a very large search area. >> reporter: this morning, reports say the chinese used

this simple hand-held device to hear those pings. if so, the maker of the device tells "the new york times" it likely would not be able to hear those pings in such a deep ocean. a british royal navy ship is now closing in, bringing more sophisticated gear for listening underwater. but a second australian ship carrying this u.s. navy black box locater now won't be coming right away. it's chasing its own lead, a third mysterious sound picked up about 350 miles away. it could be something or nothing. >> we're dealing with very deep water. we're dealing with an environment where sometimes you can get false indications. >> reporter: this morning, search teams are focusing further south because a new analysis of satellite data reveals the boeing 777 may have been flying faster than first thought, possibly going down very close to where the chinese picked up that signal. but so far, weeks of searching

the indian ocean has failed to turn up any real evidence, and tracking down these new leads is more urgent than ever, because the pings from those black boxes may be just days from going silent. the batteries running out. officials here stress they can not verify what the chinese or australians heard. they hope to learn more in the next 24 hours. we are told that british ship should be on the scene early monday morning. dan, bianna? >> so much frustration for the families too, just wanting answers. clayton, our thanks to you. and following flight 370 all day here on abc news and all week. meantime, ron has the other headlines. including an amazing night in the final four. were you up late last night? >> i was. it was no longer march madness, april madness, i guess. neither kobe nor the university of texas were in the games last night. >> i don't care. >> it was a big night in college hoops. as the final four in the ncaa became the final two. it was a night to remember on the hardwood.

>> kentucky has done it again! oh! daniels. >> the university of connecticut huskies rallied to take out the top team in the country, the florida gators, who came in having won 30-straight games. >> i told the guys, i wrote on the board, even now, faith. even though we're down 16-4, you are going to have faith in each other. >> final score, uconn, 65, florida, 53. later, eighth-seed kentucky squared off against number two seeded wisconsin. the teams battling it out. check out the monster dunk by marcus lee to put the kentucky wildcats up by four in the second half. they went on a 15-0 run. but the badgers fought back. with wisconsin clinging to a two-point edge in the final seconds, it all came down to this. aaron harrison, knocking down a three-pointer with five seconds left in the game. >> coach said he wanted me to

take a shot, and i think that gave me a lot of confidence. i know my teammates had confidence in me. that's what i had to do to win, that's what i have to do. >> uconn and kentucky now headed to the ncaa finals. the lowest seeds to make it to the national championship in more than 30 years. those upset wins sent uconn and kentucky fans into the streets to celebrate. in connecticut, 20 people arrested, and lexington, kentucky, dozens of small fires set, also many arrests. and the headline in the new york post, the sports section, reigning cats and dogs. a reference to the huskies and the wildcats. the last time that florida had lost was to uconn 30 games ago. now moving to the other headlines. a fire ripped through an historic reception hall in massachusetts as a wedding was taking place inside. flames went through the

100-year-old lake view pavilion just minutes after the couple exchanged their vows. firefighters from several towns were called in. fortunately, everyone at the wedding was able to get out safely. fire officials say, the building, though, is a total loss. a local high school that scheduled its prom at the same site now scrambling to find another venue. and in california, chaos near santa barbara as an annual street celebration gets out of hand. officials called it an extreme situation with more than 15,000 people hitting the streets. four santa barbara officers were injured while confronting the revelers. including a sheriff's deputy hit on the back of the head with a bag full of bottles of alcohol. the annual celebration draws college students from across the area. and in london, a ceremonial soldier armed with a bayonet handles a rowdy spectator outside of buckingham palace. the "sun" said on sunday the man was trying to get closer and possibly into the palace when the soldier stepped in.

this was on friday. normally cold stream guards may not leave their posts unless a royal is under threat. the man was escorted away but not arrested. can't imagine that in this country. meanwhile, a u.s. navy ship has reached a sailboat on the high seas off mexico to come to the aid of a baby who became sick. the "uss vandegrift" met the boat 900 miles off shore and now is in place to get the 1-year-old girl on board for treatment of a dangerous rash. a coast guard ship got there first, they were able to stabilize her, but she needs more care. she will now be transferred to the navy vessel. the family was bound for a south pacific island when the little girl became sick. and finally, tetris like you have never seen it before. hundreds of gamers flocking to a philadelphia skyscraper to play the classic game on this 29-story building. hundreds of l.e.d. lights were used to illuminate the building, and competitors used huge joy sticks to get the maneuvers just

right. in the end, the passes of the event fell perfectly into place. they are celebrating tech week in philadelphia and the 30th anniversary of the discovery, or creation of tetra this june. >> timeless game. >> timeless. >> one of my favorites. >> it is. >> thanks, ron. turn now to the latest on the shooting spree at ft. hood that left three soldiers dead and 16 others wound. a memorial service will be held on the base wednesday as military investigators try to determine a definite motive for the rampage. let's bring in abc's martha raddatz who is co-hosting "this week" from ft. hood. good morning to you. on such a somber week, we will expect a timeline of the shooting to be released, what could that tell us. >> reporter: we have a very basic timeline, when it began and ended. but what we really want is much more detail. where he was earlier, what might have set him off before the argument he apparently had. and a mental health timeline.

here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: wilton gregory agreeing to downsize. >> i'm disappointed in myself and i don't intend to do that mistake again. >> reporter: he had just started unpacking his boxes three months ago at this brand new $2.2 million atlanta mansion when catholics around the world began to complain. what happened to the simple life, they asked? pope francis is celebrating the poor. >> he has listened to them, we have phone messages and e-mails from around the world. >> reporter: he's decided to sell the 6,000 square foot residence with its own elevator, two dining rooms and a panic room upstairs. it's around the corner from ceos and athletes. these original blueprints called for a wine cellar and a chandelier. the nephew of "gone with the wind" author margaret mitchell donated the land and the money, instructing the church to use it for charity. in a statement this weekend, gregory says, he will move out in may. >> i have decided to sell the property and invest the proceeds from that sale into the needs of

the catholic community. >> him not even realizing this was just bad judgment. we all make bad decisions. i'm glad they are going to sell it. >> reporter: gregory may need to rent a new home. the residence he left before moving into the mansion is no longer available. it's being turned into a rectory. for "good morning america," steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> these things no longer fly in the pope francis era. thank you, steve. now to a big fight over a breakfast staple, milk. there's a growing movement to legalize raw, unpasteurized legalize raw, unpasteurized milk despite health warnings. an estimated 1% to 3% of americans are drinking so-called moonshine milk even though outbreaks of illness have doubled over the past five years. dr. richard besser is in washington with more. good morning. so, 40 bills have been introduced in 23 states, all seeking to legalize unpasteurized milk. what are the advocates of legalization arguing here? >> a few things they are saying. first is the government

shouldn't have any role in terms of what we can put into our bodies. secondly, they are saying the nutritional value of raw milk is higher than pasteurized. and lastly, that there's a value in raw milk in terms of preventing certain diseases like asthma, allergies and certain diseases. but these claims in the health benefits really aren't supported by the science. >> what about the concerns? >> well, it's a potentially risky product. milk comes from the udders which are really near the cow's intestinal tract. so anything inside the cow there risks getting into the milk. and this includes dangerous bacteria like salmonella and a deadly form of e. coli. while clean practices can reduce the risk, over the past ten years, the cdc has had reports of almost 100 outbreaks of disease from raw milk affecting nearly 2,000 people. >> dr. rich besser, thank you very much. we appreciate your guidance this morning. we appreciate that. now over to bianna.

turn overseas now to a big treat for royal watchers. they'll be seeing a whole lot more of prince william, kate and of course little prince george. the family will be popping up down under during an 18-day tour of australia and new zealand starting later today. and abc's cecilia vega is at the first stop in wellington. what a great assignment. good morning. >> reporter: good morning from new zealand. we are officially on prince george watch here. hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal baby when the family lands tomorrow morning local time. take a look at this. behind these gates is where the royal family will be staying at the governor of new zealand's home. the duke and duchess have had their royal trips aboard, in southern asia and the south pacific. but this is the first time 8-month-old george is joining them. the queen even had to give them special permission to travel together. because royal protocol doesn't

millions of views online. all because the company says they wanted to reflect how families have changed over time. though it's all about love, honey maid graham crackers new commercial has a lot of hate posted online in march, the snack company's ad features a real number of diverse families, including these two dads and biracial parents. >> every day wholesome snacks for every day wholesome families. >> some responses from the some 4 million viewers have been anything but whole some. the commercial generating negative backlash across the country, one person tweeting, your tv commercial is awful. another writing, so done with the brand. one conservative brand calling it a, quote, attempt to normalize sin. >> i'd say that the response has been so positive and sure, there's been negative feedback as well. but the positives have outweighed the negatives 10 to 1. >> this isn't the first time an ad focusing on unity led to division. there was also widespread negative reaction to this

cheerio's commercial featuring a mixed-race family. and this coca-cola commercial showing people from multiple backgrounds singing "america the beautiful." despite that backlash, both companies stood by their ads. >> these companies that stand by the ads after the negative comments back from them are reflecting their core values as corporations. >> honey maid is also standing behind their message, releasing this follow-up ad that has been viewed more than 2 million times. those messages of hate rolled up into messages of love. now, honey maid has been around for 90 years, and they say families have changed a lot during that time. their goal is to show just how different they look today than when they went into business. >> standing by their decision. >> they are. >> thanks, mara. >> thanks, guys. well, everybody loves a secret, especially if you're in on it. we're revealing the items from your favorite fast food chain you may not know about.

so secret menu options online. order animal-style fries and they'll know, fries, melted cheese, onions and onion sauce. and a protein style burger minus the bun. but other chains remain hush, hush. mcdonald's, taco bell, chipotle and starbucks all tell abc news they don't have a specific special menu, but appreciate creativity. that's what fast foodies have done. taking to social media proving sometimes you have to read between the lines and hack the menu. my taste buds were tempted. first, chipotle for the famed quesarito. what happens when a quesadilla marries are burrito? a quesarito. and now to wash it down -- we got it, a cotton candy frappuccino. can i really get a monster mac? don't fret if your local chain isn't in the food loop. websites like hackthemenu.com give you the cheat or the eat cheat on how anyone can make the crazy concoctions.

good morning, ashley. >> good morning, it's spring, and in spring, we talk about the possibility of severe weather. today's severe weather threat for the south, this system moving through this morning. a system of low pressure. bringing some rain to that area. showers and thunderstorms continue to roll through. now as they roll through, we can't rule out the possibility of severe weather with this season. we are -- with this system. we are in the elevated risk for severe weather. as this low pressure tracks into the mississippi valley and parts of the southeast, possibility of tornados, strong winds and even hail. a bigger concern with this system, the flooding, as you can see, the broad area, the possibility of 2 to 4 inches of rain from louisiana to parts of georgia. so heavy rain falling with this system. we will see the possibility of snow in the rockies and that severe weather threat in the south.

but first the trial of oscar pistorius ready to make headlines once again. the olympic runner expected to take the stand this week. >> that's when he's going to tell his side of the story, murder was never on his mind. and killing his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp was all, he's going to say, a tragic mistake. abc's ryan smith has been following the trial and is with us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, in south africa when a defendant takes the stand, he usually goes first. not so here in the anything but normal oscar pistorius trial, and it could work to his advantage. oscar pistorius back in court after a ten-day layoff. but he won't be telling his side of the story just yet. >> you always want the defendant testifying at the end rather than at the beginning. >> reporter: the defendant's case, sprinting out of the gates with a pathologist. he's expected to refute the prosecution's theories about model reeva steenkamp's position when he blasted four shots at close range through a locked bathroom door. killing her in the early hours of valentine's day last year.

>> she was standing in front of the door, facing the door. >> reporter: pistorius who pleaded not guilty claims he mistook her for an intruder. but so far, the prosecution has lined up witness after witness backing its theory that he intentionally killed her. the neighbors saying they heard screams from inside the blade runner's home before the shooting. contradicting claims they had gone to bed early. jarring autopsy photos of her body, causing the track star to break down repeatedly. showing the gruesome nature of the crime. and prosecutors depicting him as a gun-toting loose cannon. sky news showed this picture of an armed pistorius. and using text messages to show the tumultuous relationship between the pair. i'm scared of you sometimes. what will he say in the court? prior to trial, he provided an affidavit which gives clues to his side of the story, including this. quote, i fired shots at the toilet door and shouted to reeva

to phone the police. reeva was not responding. it dawned on me it could have bean reeva who was in the toilet. >> the defense's goal over the next few days, three-fold. to dispute that the relationship was anything but loving. but couldn't have been standing or screaming before he shot through that door. and by far the most important, to get the jury to believe every bit of the account of what happened that night. dan, bianna? >> we will be covering the trial all week on "gma." now, time to check the morning headlines and once again, over to ron. hi, again. good morning, everyone. in the news, a possible break in the mystery of what happened to the missing malaysian jet liner. a ship scouring the indian ocean picked up three different signals. investigators are trying figure out whether the pings are from the missing aircraft's black box. and international praise, the people of afghanistan turned out in huge numbers for the first democratic transfer of power in that country's history. 58% of eligible voters went to the polls despite threats of violence from the taliban.

that's the same percentage of voters that turned out in the u.s. for the 2012 presidential election. and the stage and the teams are set for the ncaa final following two huge upsets. uconn, university of connecticut, rallied to take out the top team in the country, the florida gators. and meanwhile, kentucky hit a three pointer in the waning seconds against wisconsin to advance. and they are squaring off tomorrow night. and finally, a baby giraffe at the oklahoma city zoo is getting ready for a risky surgery this week. kia is 6-months-old and was born with a heart condition. it's not out of the ordinary for small animals like dogs. however, performing it on a gir raf increases the risks. she has trouble eating, so it's necessary. best of luck to her and her team of veterinarians. >> oh, sweet. >> keep you posted. >> jake's favorite animal. >> is it? you could buy him a giraffe. >> he has plenty at home.

i think i was confused by it at first because it seemed. very counter-intuitive if you're eating healthy. i had no clue how that would affect just the breaking down of the enamel on my teeth. the only thing at that point that i could do is to prevent it from getting worse. the dentist recommended that i use pronamel to help strengthen my enamel. i can't live without coffee, i can't live without fruit, and i think that pronamel gives me a peace of mind that i'm taking care of my teeth for the long-run.
