tonight. a 1-year-old baby is well though after becoming sick at sea. and now the family is sharing their story. good evening and thank you for joining us. the family was stuck at sea with a sick baby a thousand miles off cabo san lucas. nick smith is live at moffett field with the new details. nick? >> good evening. the 129th rescue wing team is from here at moffett field. they have safely recovered the 1-year-old and they have her in their care. they are moving closer to shore. today new information about their rescue efforts. >> the navy ship was in the port on wednesday. >> these are pictures we we

haven't seen before. members of the international guard are gearing up for their mission. they stayed by her side when the navy arrived. >> want her to have a medical assistance. expediting that will be the best option in some cases. >> they rescued the family with the sick babies from the sailboat that broke down hundreds of miles off the mexican coast bringing them safely aboard a san diego-bound navy ship so the girl can get the medical treatment she needed. >> for us the mission is not complete until we transfer the patient to the next highest level of medical care which will be a medical facility in the san diego area. >> officials tell abc7 news that lira is in stable condition. they also rescued her 3-year-old sister, cora, and the girl's parents. they are expected to arrive in san diego by midweek. >> this is a remote region of the pacific. there are very few shipping lanes and no other ships. that necessitated the friggit

leaving san diego to help us out. >> the 129th rescue team showed rescue members jumping into the san diego ocean. it was thought the team may have to use the helicopter for transport. so far it hasn't been necessary. they are prepared to fuel and launch it if needed as demonstrated in the video. the kaufmans were two weeks into a sailing trip around the world when she developed a fever and rash covering her body and she was not responding to medication. it left the family with a different story to tell. as moffett field, abc news. >> the family defended their decision to take their 1-year-old on the around the world voyage. in a statement a they said in part, quote, when we departed on this journey more than a year ago we were then and remain today confident we prepared as any sailing crew could. new details. a little boy has died after a head on on crash along highway 12 in napa county. the victim was between the

ages of 4 and 6. paramedics rushed four adults to the hospital after two suvs crashed. it happened around 3:30 this afternoon. the highway patrol was trying to figure out who was at fault. chp believes speeding and drunk driving combined to kill two near vacaville. they visited the site where a pick up truck crashed. three others suffered serious injuries. everyone riding in the truck was thrown from the vehicle. it appears none of them was wearing a seatbelt. a mysterious disappearance in marin county has search and rescue teams baffled. the 33-year-old software developer hasn't been seen since last sunday. the surveillance video shows her at a parking lot three days of searching has not turned up anything. officials tell abc7 news that reports she may have updated her linked in account after

her disappearance turned out to be false. a big change a for commuters in the bay area. the toll to cross the golden gate bridge is going up. leslie brinkley joins us live from the golden gate bridge with the details. leslie? >> that's right. it is a one-hour countdown to a $7 toll. most of the people i talked to tonight are quietly resigned to simply fork over the extra buck. starting on monday a trip across the iconic golden gate bridge will cost $7. the fast track will cost $6. it is a $1 price hike. it would be running through drivers' minds as they pay. >> 50% of our toll that comes from this bridge helps to subsidize transit and the bus and ferry system and that takes a lot of traffic off the road for the everyday. >> those enjoying a brilliant afternoon gazing at the bridge thought it was worth an extra dollar. >> if we have to pay it, we will pay it. >> it seems reasonable. although we don't cross the

bridge every day. if i crossed it every day i would probably have a different perspective. >> it may be the most expensive bridge in the bay area, but not else where. virginia's chesapeake bay bridge cost $15 to cross in each direction. and then there is still the old fashioned bargain on the sky way bridge. it is $1.25. what is the best way to sidestep the buck increase on the golden gate? sign up for fast track. the toll is going no where but up. by 2018 you will be paying $8 to drive across it. in san francisco, leslie brinkly, abc7 news. that may hurt and this will hurt as well. a big parking change will take affect in downtown walnut creek! the meter hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. parking is enforced seven days a week. this was the last free sunday to park downtown. rates are doubling. it will now cost $2 per hour.

for the missing malaysian airliner. a ship detected signals consistent with tran missions -- transmissions from black boxes. it is near where searchers were looking for the plane for days, but they say it is too early to say anything for sure. abc news reporter lawyer rejacobs has the latest. larry jacobs has the latest. >> underwater sounds have been picked up three times from the boeing 777. the first two a mile apart, by a chinese navy ship with a device like this one. but the manufacturer says it is not capable of detecting the sounds in such deep water. the lead australian ship ocean shield using a u.s. black box locator heard the ping about 350 miles away jie. they have to be hearing two different things. the pingers cannot travel more than a few miles. it is definitely two different

100 people were arrested after a spring break party became violent. at least 44 people were hurt. the injured included police who were pelted with rocks and bottles. a syracuse surgeon is under investigation for slapping and insulting patients before surgery. according to the complaint the doctor, an or that orthopedic surgeon slapped them so hard he left red marks and hand prints. they now phase sanctions over the issue. the skateboarding dog will make you smile. 7-year-old buddy not only skateboards, but he plays soccer too. and there is more. buddy is a therapy dog. >> through the spca of san francisco they run a program called assisted therapy animals -- assisted animal therapy. they take him to hospitals and senior homes and the children wards where the people are ill. they pet them and they feel better. it is an amazing therapy.

looking forward san francisco and it is clear out there. we will look for a little patchy coastal fog developing by tomorrow morning. get ready for a warmer day and the series of warm temperatures will stay with us through midweek and we will start to cool down a little bit. so where it is -- some of the heat is with us. the temperatures will be a little warmer. 52 san francisco and you can see it is down the peninsula and in the low 50s as well. in the north bay a little on the chilly side. the temperatures there in santa rosa and 46 for napa and 48 expected low by early tomorrow morning in antioch. the water vapor is showing the story. the high pressure is right here and it is pushing all of the jet stream and all of the storms well to the north of us. and folks it is not going anywhere. it is going to stay put there for at least the next four to five days. unfortunately it doesn't look like we will see much in the way of precipitation this coming week.

target specific proteins. blood cancer screening has been conflicting recommendations. and now prominent specialists in the bay area are hoping to change the way women are screened for the disease. carolyn johnson has the story. >> reporter: 63-year-old maria norman is healthy right now. but she is concerned about screening options for breast cancer. >> my mother died and was diagnosed with cancer at 34, breast cancer and died at 37. she left behind four children. >> have any of your relatives been diagnosed with cancer of any kind underage of 20? >> she joined a program called the atheena breast health network. in exchange of providing detailed information, she received in exchanging a risk assessment for breast cancer. the breast health specialists say the organization is constantly analyzing and refining statistical data from tens of thousands of

participants. >> my role is to look through the data and share risk information. >> the program was created with the goal of treating breast cancer. but it could be a testing ground once again, this time for something fiercely debated. how to screen and test for breast cancer. >> i i don't want to argue about it anymore. >> she has been at the center of a national controversy after suggesting many women may not benefit from yearly mammograms. arguing for more risk-based screening. now along with other atheena researchers she says there will be a trial that tests the effectiveness of tools including fast evaluation of genetic markers linked to different breast cancers. >> they identified 60, 70 of these differences that probably make up a reasonable chunk of the increased risk

for breast cancer. >> the trial would take a more focused look at factors such as breast density and the value beyond mammography. at least one provider expressed support for a screening trial. >> it is really important we move away from a one size fits all model. even the providers in the medical community can't agree on a one size fits all. >> the team will examine the current regimens as well as the genetics of patients and the different types of breast cancers that appear all with the goal of giving women like maria more precise advice on the best way to protect their health. >> i just don't know if getting a mammography every one year is needed for me. >> we owe this to women to take our modern tools and help us learn how to screen in 2014 jie. abc7 news.
