newly detected signals being called the best information yet in a month-long hunt for flight 370. >> a u.s. navy pinger locator picked up signals for the first time in the search that are consistent with transmissions from black box recorders. abc's tahman bradley has the latest in the mystery of flight 370. >> reporter: they are the most promising clues so far. underwater sounds that could be pings from flight 370's black boxes. deep in the indian ocean, a high-tech australian ship picked up two signals. >> it could take some days before the information is available to establish whether these detections can be confirmed as being from mh370. in very deep oceanic water, nothing happens fast. >> reporter: meanwhile, about 350 miles away from the sounds detected by the australian ship, a chinese naval vessel picked up sounds using a handheld device like this, but experts say it's unlikely the equipment would be

able to hear the black box beacons in such deep water. nevertheless, a british navy ship with sophisticated detection devices was dispatched to investigate. >> this is a very sophisticated ship. if they hear anything, they'll be able to send down a drone, for instance, and with hydrophones and other things it will be able to get to the source of whatever that noise is. >> reporter: the multinational search has moved south. a new look at satellite data shows the 777 may have been flying faster than initially thought possibly going down close to where the chinese picked up those signals. it's a race against time. the pingers on the black boxes could go silent any minute. their battery life is close to running out. >> this is the most difficult search in human history. >> reporter: the signals are being detected about 2.8 miles deep. in the late 1980s a south african flight was recovered at that depth, but it took two years to find the cockpit voice recorder. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> all right, tahman, thank you. and as this newest development unfolds, stay with abc news for the very latest.

a live report coming up on "good morning america." and now to breaking news from hollywood. screen legend mickey rooney has died. his long career began as a child actor back in hollywood's golden age. abc's linsey davis takes a look back at the man and his movies. >> reporter: with two oscars and 200 films to his credit, mickey rooney was a hollywood institution. >> people in our business are the luckiest people in the world. >> reporter: acting was quite literally in his blood. the son of vaudeville performers, rooney got his start in showbiz when he was still in short pants, but it was the all-american teenager, andy hardy, who got rooney his big break. mgm turned them "the hardy family adventures" into a series of 15 films. young andy found love with judy garland, and young mickey found stardom. in 1939 he was the biggest box office draw in the country. there were a string of hits, "boys towns" and "babes in arms." ♪ good morning good morning to you ♪

>> reporter: in 1944 he starred with elizabeth taylor in "national velvet." >> velvet, you'll be disqualified at the end when they find out you're a girl. >> reporter: it was hollywood's golden age and the best of times for rooney, but world war ii intruded. he was drafted, and when he returned all grown up, his career took a downturn. his movies flopped. rooney finally found happiness with his eighth wife, jan chamberlain, and he found success on screen again in films like "the black stallion." >> he's fast, all right. >> reporter: rooney won an emmy for his role in the tv movie "bill." >> hey, bill. >> reporter: in 1983 the academy gave him an honorary oscar for lifetime achievement. when asked how he wanted to be remembered? >> i said just two words, "i tried." >> reporter: linsey davis, abc news. >> reaction of mickey rooney's death have been pouring in overnight. >> comments keep coming in on our facebook page. tammy says, "one of my all-time favorite actors from the golden years of film."

it'll be slightly warmer than that here in new york city. happening today in south africa, the beginning of the defense case today in the murder trial of oscar pistorius. the case has been in recess for the past ten days. a pathologist who is expected to refute prosecution theories about the death of pistorius' girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, is the first defense witness that's being called. pistorius is next on the stand. well, the body of a missing michigan doctor may have been found. an autopsy is scheduled tomorrow on the body which was pulled from an indiana lake over the weekend. dr. teleka patrick was last seen in december at the hospital where she worked. her car was later found off an indiana highway with her wallet and credit cards still inside. a california family heading home on a navy warship after a dramatic rescue mission to pluck them from the pacific ocean. charlotte and eric kaufman were sailing around the world with their two young children when their 1-year-old got sick and their sailboat lost steering. this was nearly a thousand miles off mexico. researchers parachuted down and

put the family on a navy warship. the baby is doing better. kaufmans say they were as well prepared as any sailing crew could have been. they're due back to san diego, they were, anyway, as soon as tomorrow. well, sunday was a day of remembrance for those who died last week in the shootings at ft. hood. flags lined the entrance of the first methodist -- first united methodist church in nearby killeen, and four ribbons hung on the front sign to remember the dead. the white house says president and mrs. obama will travel to texas on wednesday for a memorial service. all right, one more note from overseas, the young royals are just beginning their three-week tour down under. britain's prince william, his wife kate and little prince george arriving there in wellington, new zealand, this morning. it is their first trip abroad since george joined the family. >> he's nearly 9 months old now, and while mom and dad are busy, george is going to spend most of his time with his nanny. >> among them welcoming them this morning, a traditional warrior in what there is of his traditional garb. that look on kate's face says it all. >> where is she looking? >> all right. just saying. new hope now in the battle

and sent the nasdaq to its biggest daily loss since february. well, starting today, general motors begins repairs on 2.6 million vehicles at the center of its controversial recall tied to at least 13 deaths. owners of six gm models can bring their vehicles to a dealer to have the ignition switch replaced, but the automaker warns make an appointment first. a brand-new study reveals the jaw-dropping cost of childhood obesity. researchers from the academy of pediatrics say an obese child will rack up $19,000 more in health care costs over a lifetime compared to someone growing up with a normal weight. the study came up with that figure by estimating the cost of doctor visits and medication. and a promising new breast cancer drug could mean blockbuster profits for pfizer. tests on palbociclib found it cut the risk of breast cancer almost in half. the lead investigator called the results groundbreaking, the drug may also hold promise for treating other types of cancers. well, another superhero crushing the competition at the

box office. "captain america: the winter soldier" debuted in the top spot with an april record of $96.2 million. more than 300 million worldwide. "noah" was far in second with 17 million. well, what was supposed to be a celebration of spring turned into a violent street riot that sent dozens to the hospital and dozens more to jail. >> a street party near u.c. santa barbara known as deltopia turning ugly when an officer arrested a partyer for hitting him in the face with a backpack full of liquor bottles. suddenly some people in the crowd started throwing bricks and rocks and tearing down stop signs. police responded with tear gas. >> something we haven't experienced in santa barbara in at least the last 15 years, incredibly disturbing and incredibly frustrating when someone who is trying to do their job and protect everybody out in the community is assaulted in such a manner. >> it took hours before order was restored. six officers were injured including one hit in the face with a brick. another whose hand was cut so deeply by the bottle, that he will need surgery. well, anna nicole smith's daughter may soon become a multimillionaire.

6-year-old dannielynn birkhead would be awarded the money from the estate of her late mother's husband. the will has been a subject of dispute ever since the death of e. pierce marshall back in 1994. marshall's son had argued that smith and her daughter were entitled to nothing but a judge has now decided otherwise. a carelessly tossed cigarette is being blamed for a fire that ruined a wedding near boston. flames engulfing a century-old lakefront building in foxborough over the weekend just after the couple said their "i dos." the newlyweds had to run for their lives leaving everything behind. >> they proceeded to go down the aisle one more time. all of a sudden we noticed that there was some wisps of smoke. >> fortunately, no one was injured. investigators say someone tossed a cigarette into mulch, and it spread to the vinyl siding. the venue had no sprinklers. they were not required to. the building will have to be demolished. excuse me. the faa investigating this fiery crash of a hot air balloon over the weekend in central indiana. take a look at this. the balloon was descending when it struck power lines. it then fell into an open field. there were seven people on board

chance to do it again this week. oh, everything is great in huskyville, the uconn ladies beat stanford in the women's final four, 75-56. stanford actually led by as many as six early. weren't able to prevent the huskies from getting to 39-0. uconn men will play kentucky for the national championship tonight. in the other game, sunday night, notre game dominated maryland. senior guard kayla mcbride, will play without their other star, natalie achonwa. she is out with a knee injury. so it all comes down to this, unbeaten uconn and notre dame battle head to head in nashville to determine who will be etched in history as national champions. it all starts 7:30 with the pregame show, and then at 8:30 the game that decides it all tips off at bridgestone arena. the national championship in the ncaa women's college basketball tournament presented by capital one tuesday starting at 7:30 p.m. on espn.

hospital. you can see the police cars with heavy police presence in the neighborhood as officers talk to witnesses. we will have an upstate from cornell at the top of the hour. >> in san francisco, police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident at 11:00 last night on van ness when a truck was headed north on van ness and hit the pedestrian not in the crosswalk. the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. this is the seventh deadly pedestrian accident in san francisco this year. >> forget cow tipping, police are vetting a case of car tipping overnight. vandalled flip several vehicles in different locations but there is one common link. amy hollyfield is in the newsroom. >> i have the video you have to see. check out this
