indian ocean where search crews are zeroing in on the signal of the black boxes of the missing flight 370. >> the pings have them believing they will ultimately find this plane. >> an australian official reports that a ship detected two more signals consistent with the black boxes on the missing malaysian airline jet. >> officials say finding the pings makes the search area smaller and more manageable. researchers said words 239 families have been waiting a month to hear. >> i am optimistic we will find the aircraft or what is left of the aircraft in the not too distant future. >> officials do caution that nothing has been found yet. it was 31 days ago when flight

370 disappeared with 239 people on board. if you are worried about crime, you may be considering installing surveillance cameras. a growing number of bay area homeowners are using them. in fremont, worried homeowners packed a workshop where they learned how they worked and why they are so effective. lisa amin gulezian is live in the center where the meeting was held. lisa? >> dan, the meeting ended here a little while ago and more than a hundred people packed this place. they came not only to learn how to protect themselves, but to figure out ways to work together as neighbors as well as a larger community. >> scary. in other words, it can be scary. >> fear is what has driven just about everyone to this workshop on surveillance cameras. there are 250 cameras registered with the freemont -- fremont police department. the police can check their database to see if the

homeowner caught it on video. >> we were reliant on the information given to us by the people in the neighborhood. >> that's why police want more people to install cameras. video helped police track down this thief who stole a package off a front porch recently. investigators invited the long-time fremont resident ken thomas to lead the surveillance discussion. he set up the state-of-the-arts. >> that watches the playground in the courtyard. >> they picked up our news van's plns plate as we entered the neighborhood. they are convented -- convinced that's why there was only one break in in two years. >> the criminals will drive in if they see the cameras they will probably go out. we believe it is a strong deterrent. >> a community approach where the entire neighborhood chips in and sets up cameras in the kilo locations. key locations. it is an idea that sounded good, but was not realistic to

accidental. an exact cause remains under investigation. a fire destroyed one home and damaged two others displacing seven people. fire officials say the open style of the homes helped fuel the flames. we are learning about the rescue of a san diego family in the ocean. rescuers from moffett field were the first to reach the boat off the coast. the mission's pilot spoke with abc7 news by phone saying it was one of the most difficult rescues of his twenty-year career. >> with the ceilings, the seas and the daylight, the sense of urgency for the 1-year-old bay, it was a challenge for the whole crew. >> lyra and her family who set out on a year long voyage were transferred to a navy ship when their boat started to sink. the baby sim proving and the family is set to arrive in san diego tomorrow. they face criticism, however,

for taking their two small children on such a trip. rescuers say they are happy to help the family. for the first time today drivers on the new bay bridge may have noticed a change. a large section of the old eastern span is now gone. abc7 news reporter alan wang took a tour of the construction site. he joins us from treasure island. alan? >> tonight you can see a faint image of the old bridge behind the new one. we are about to see the demolition of the old bridge take a more rapid pace. the past over the past year cal trans has been doing a lot of preparation for this. during that time nobody really noticed much until today. from their hot dog stand on treasure island, angel and his father are noticing a 50-foot gap in the old section of the bay bridge. >> you have been watching it? >> every day. little by little they take it apart. >> crews are removing the

30,000 -pound beams and the tension that held the bridge together. >> if you cut it in the middle like we did it would drop into the water. >> cal trans installed the hydrolic jacks that are pulling the load from the two halfs away from each other so it doesn't collapse. >> they are looking at how the bridge was built 80 years ago and we are taking it apart in the exact opposite order. >> as they were grinding the surface of the upper deck construction workers discovered something long forgotten. >> you can see how they uncovered the white, square tiles used to separate the lanes more than 80 years ago. each day the gap will get wider and cal trans is asking drivers not to slow down to look. in about two years and $300 million later, the old bay bridge will be no more. on treasure island, alan wang, abc7 news. >> it it is a perfect opening day for the giants. and a super hero to throw out

this is a time lapse. just a short time ago san francisco you can see the fog just rolling in. if you look at the view, the fog is not a problem now, but your temperatures are definitely going to drop. 81 was the high for today. 5 degrees cooler at 76 tomorrow afternoon. san francisco will see an 8-degree temperature drop. 5 degrees cooler in oakland and 74 degrees and you will notice a 10-degree difference in redwood city. san jose 80 tomorrow after a high of 87 today. so hope you enjoyed the warmth. it will still be warm, but not as warm as it has been. the emeryville camera looking back toward san francisco. there is coit tower and you can see the fog in the sphrans. in the distance. los gat toes and half moon bay, and from the financial district, they are in the clear. 53 in santa rosa and 60 in napa. low 60s for fairfield and concord. 65 still in livermore. so pretty mild.
