good wednesday morning, everyone. there's renewed hope this morning that crews are closing in on the location of flight 370. >> search equipment picked up more pings that could be coming from the plane that's been missing for more than a month now. >> abc's clayton sandell, just filing this report from perth, australia. >> reporter: officials leading the search for that missing airliner and the 239 people onboard, say their ship, "the ocean shield," using an underwater device, called a pinger locater, has detected two new underwater signals they say are consistent with a locater beacon from an airplane's voice and data recorder, the so-called black boxes. the ship picked up the signals tuesday afternoon and evening australia time. the first lasted a little over five minutes. the second, about seven minutes. >> caution again, what we're picking up is a great lead. i'm now optimistic that we will find the aircraft or what is left of the aircraft, in the

not-too-distant future. >> reporter: now, this marks the fourth time these signals have been detected. the first two, over the weekend. and the u.s. navy captain in charge of the pinger locater on that australian ship, agrees that a lot more methodical, painstaking searching still needs to be done. but now, they are narrowing in. >> i'd say we're getting more confident that we found the haystack. >> reporter: the next step will be to soon deploy this underwater vehicle called the bluefin-21, to map the sea floor for possible wreckage. but captain matthews says, the search area is still to big, if you drew a circle around it, it might take a month or more to search completely. now, of course, there's still reason to be cautious. these signals are not confirmed yet to be coming from malaysia 370. but officials leading the search team here are the most optimistic we've seen them so far. clayton sandell, abc news, perth, australia. >> clayton, thank you. as these newest developments unfold, stay with abc news.

the latest coming up on "good morning america." breaking news, now, from alaska, where officials say a small commercial plane has crashed and burned. the accident happened near the town of bethel, about 425 miles west of anchorage. officials say the cessna caravan was on a training flight with two pilots onboard when it went down. there is no word on survivors. prosecutors have begun cross-examining oscar pistorius. yesterday, he broke down in sobs when he described the night his girlfriend was killed. abc's matt gutman is there. >> reporter: oscar pistorius, describing for the first time publicly, the chilling moment he realized he killed his girlfriend, the reality star reeva steenkamp. >> i sat over reeva and i cried. i don't know how long i stood there for. >> reporter: when the words stopped, the sobbing began. >> she wasn't breathing. >> reporter: the judge abruptly leaving the courtroom. but his howls only intensified. in earlier testimony, he said,

he headed to bed harmoniously with steenkamp that night, waking up to what he says he thought were intruders. >> the first thing that that ran through my mind was that i needed to arm myself. that i needed to protect reeva and i. that i needed to get my gun. >> reporter: he testified he called for her but says he heard nothing. at this point, reeva's mother normally sitting stone faced on the front bench, covering her eyes. >> before i knew it, i had fired four shots at the door. my ears were ringing. i couldn't hear anything. so, i shouted -- i kept on shouting for reeva to phone the police. >> reporter: matt gutman, abc news, pretoria, south africa. ukraine is on edge this morning. tempers boiled over and a brawl broke out in parliament while pro-russian partisans seized and torched government buildings in the eastern part of the country. russia claims ukraine has hired american mercenaries to destabilize the country. the u.s. is accusing russia of fueling the violence to justify an invasion. here at home, there's been another shooting on a military

base. authorities say a marine guarding the main gate at camp lejeune, shot and killed another guard while on duty. no one else was injured. the shooter is in custody. there's no word on why he opened fire. officials say it's an isolated incident. and the base was never locked down. meanwhile, president obama is making a condolence call at ft. hood today. he and the first lady will attend a memorial service. it's the second time the president has visited the army base after a mass shooting. last week, an argument on that base ended with the deaths of four people. 16 people were injured. the obamas had already been scheduled to visit texas today. and the president plans to visit the site of the deadly mudslide in washington state. he will meet with families, recovery workers and first responders during his visit on april 22nd, exactly one month after that tragedy. the official death toll is now 35, with 11 people still listed as missing. those still unaccounted for range in age from 2 years old to 91 years old. about three dozen passengers aboard a princess cruise have

gotten sick. apparently from the norovirus. the ship is currently off the california coast after a stop in san francisco on monday. a spokeswoman for the cruise line said none of the sick passengers had left the ship. crews are stepping up sanitation measures. taking a look at today's weather. it should be mild and dry in most of the country. it will be warmer than usual on the west. gusty winds in the upper midwest and northeast. temperatures in the southwest could set records today. warm 70s west of the great lakes. in the 40s and 50s east of them. the south will see highs in the 60s. following a developing story from iowa, where a large-scale disturbance has broken out near the state campus in ames. police say thousands of students converged on that area, pulling down light poles, tipping at least one car. at least one person was hurt in that. the university's in the middle of a week-long celebration known for its alcohol-fueled vandalism. for the second-straight year, uconn's women's basketball team is on top of their sport. the huskies beat notre dame last

welcome back. breaking business news. toyota recalling more than 6 million vehicles worldwide. more than one-third of them are in the u.s. there are problems with the steering and seats in some yaris, rav 4 and carolla models. it's one of the largest recalls ever in the auto industry. but toyota says it's not aware of any accidents because of the problems. summertime barbecues are going to cost more. beef prices are at all-time high because of extreme weather in the west. and experts say prices are not expected to come down anytime soon. snowstorms, extreme cold and drought have thinned the nation's cattle herds to levels not seen since 1951.

snowy colorado wilderness for a minnesota father and his 18-year-old son. >> damian and evan mcmahnus wen hiking a week ago. their car was found near a trail. they had breakfast at denny's wednesday morning. now, searchers are looking in an area where they picked up cell phone signals. >> worst case scenarios, one would be an avalanche. one would be hypothermic. if they hunkered down, they would be under three feet of snow, easily. >> the trip was supposed to be a father/son getaway for spring break. the search was hindered by bad weather. it's now starting to improve. this is video shot by a 9-year-old who saved his father's life after a snowmobiling accident near lake tahoe. the dad was buried in snow with a broken leg. so, the boy dug him out. then, he went out to get help. he found a tour group that radioed for help. >> i jumped off the snowmobile

and went to go dig him out. i tried to dig him out as fast as i could. my fingers kind of got numb. >> helicopters airlifted his father to the hospital, where emergency surgery on his broken leg was performed. the boy's mother credited his sense of calm for helping them get through that crisis. the fbi has joined local officials in kansas city, trying to figure out if a series of highway shootings is connected. there's been 13 attacks since early march. three people were hurt. investigators say there's similarities. there's no physical evidence linking the shootings yet. surveillance video that showed vance mcallister kissing a staffer was apparently leaked by the manager of his district office. the manager reportedly told her pastor she leaked a video to push mcallister out of office. but the louisiana republican is vowing to run for re-election. he apologized to his wife, five children and constituents. but he's facing intense pressure from fellow lawmakers. >> the american people deserve

all of their representatives here in washington to hold to a very high standard of behavior and conduct. >> this is the congress of the united states of america. this is not a frat house. >> mcallister is expected to ask for an fbi investigation into the leak. the staffer in the video has resigned. the family of a new york nursing home resident is suing after the home brought in a male stripper. 86-year-old bernice youngblood said she was forced to get a lap dance from the stripper here. the family said she was embarrassed and humiliated. the nursing home claims the strip show was approved and paid for by the residents. and now, a sad note to pass along. the death of one of the biggest pro wrestling stars of the 1990s. we learned overnight that the ultimate warrior has died. >> he was born james hebwig. there's reports he collapsed outside a hotel in arizona.

was shot and killed lying in the street. there was a crowd of people that turned angry. they had to call in extra officers to help with crowd control. some witnesses gave police information and helped figure out there is a woman they need to talk to. they believe she knew the victim and are calling her a "person of interest" at this point. no arrests have been made and no motive has been given but they are asking anyone with information to call police. >> antioch police are investigating a fatal shooting outside a liquor store, the man was found on the ground near joe's liquor store on d street at 4:30 your afternoon. he was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. anyone with information should contact the antioch police department. >> new developments this morning and new o
