making news in america this morning -- school stabbing spree. a student with two knives causes mayhem in the busy halls of a high school. what we're learning about the suspect and the heroes in a live report from the school. deadly crash. a chain-reaction crash sends a car flying into a day-care center filled with children. new details this morning about the man on the run, accused of causing it. survival story. a mother and a baby in the direct path of the deadly mudslide. >> i held on to that baby like that was the only person that i had. >> how the furniture in her home saved their lives when the home slid hundreds of feet. and terrifying view. a cement truck loses control and is sent on a collision course with another car.

good thursday morning. classes are canceled today at a high school where a sophomore is accused of going on a slashing and stabbing spree. >> investigators say it started before the day's classes began at a school near pittsburgh. more than 20 people are being treated for injuries. >> and this morning we're learning more about the teen under arrest and the heroic actions that helped stop the attack. abc's tahman bradley is live in murrysville, pennsylvania. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, diana. good morning, john. another incident of violence at a u.s. school. this high school actually trains for situations involving a gunman. no gunman this time. instead, no one could have imagined that a student would go on a rampage using knives. overnight, prayers and tears. a stunned suburban pittsburgh community, coming together after a shocking act of violence.

it happened here, at franklin regional high school yesterday morning. >> i don't know what i got going down at the school here. but i need some units here asap. >> reporter: police say this 16-year-old sophomore, alex hribal, wielding eight-inch to ten-inch knives, ran through the halls, slashing and stabbing anyone he could. 22 people in all. 21 students and a security guard. >> there was blood right where the double-doors are, all over the wall. >> people were running everywhere. no one knew what that do. it's unbelievable. no one knew that it was happening. it -- >> reporter: hribal was charged with 4 counts of attempted homicide and 21 counts of aggravated assault. authorities say he will be prosecuted as an adult. the fbi removed desktop computers and other items from hribal's home. the suspect's father offered this message to the victims. >> my prayers go out to everyone who was injured today. and i hope they recover as quickly as possible. >> reporter: this morning, students and faculty are being

hailed at heroes. during the attack, one wounded student bravely pulled the fire alarm, alerting everyone in the building. and assistant principal, sam king, tackled the suspect. >> mr. king immobilized him. he pinned him down. i jumped on top of him, as well. and just held down his wrists and arms. >> reporter: now, there are also stories of students rushing to apply pressure to their peers' wounds. four people remain in critical condition this morning. authorities say this could have been so much worse if not for those heroic students and staff. john and diana? >> tahman bradley, live in murrysville, pennsylvania. thank you. and student nate scimio is being credited with saving lives by pulling that fire alarm, which forced the school to be evacuated. >> nate was taken along with 19 others to the hospital after the attacker was subdued. and then, he snapped a selfie with the caption of chillin' at children's, a reference to the hospital he was in. and the stabbing victims were remembered last night before the penguins/red wings game. >> we expect to learn more as investigators return to the scene today.

we'll have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." an all-out search is now under way for one of the drivers involved in a crash at a florida day-care center which killed a little girl. other children that were inside the orlando area facility are fighting for their lives. witnesses described the scene of horror as tiny victims were taken out on stretchers. parents descended on that center to check on their children. >> i heard a crash. i see the black car run up over the sidewalk and into the school. >> i'm glad that he's fine. but it still breaks my heart. there's a lot of other kids that got injured. >> the car that hit the day-care center was apparently hit from behind by another vehicle. police are looking for that driver who has a long criminal record. searchers looking for the missing malaysian jetliner think they may be closing in on the wreckage. >> this morning, crews detected a possible new underwater signal. an official says an australian navy aircraft picked up the signal off of australian's west coast, where a buoy had been

placed. it's the same area ships first heard sounds consistent with the plane's black box earlier this week. the crew picked up a possible signal maybe from a manmade source. this is the fifth underwater signal connected since this weekend. abc's clayton sandell is in perth, australia, with the very latest on the search effort. >> reporter: two dozen airplanes and ships are searching, today. their target area has gotten considerably smaller over the last few days. but it's still enormous. just over 22,000-square miles. that's about the size of west virginia. but searching such a large, deep ocean could take months, unless they get a better idea of where to look for what officials are calling malaysia 370's final resting place. clayton sandell, abc news, perth, australia. >> thank you, clayton. investigating teams are rushing to the site of a chopper crash at a hospital. a medical helicopter crashed while taking off from the roof of new mexico's only top-level trauma center. the three crew members aboard did not appear to be seriously injured. the chopper had just dropped off

a patient at the hospital when the accident happened. oscar pistorius' second day of the cross-examination at the murder trial is already as fierce as the first day. pistorius faced aggressive questioning yesterday from south africa's top prosecutor. and it's happening again today, about the death of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. prosecutor gerrie nel pressed pistorius to own up to steenkamp's death. when a picture of steenkamp's head wound was shown, pistorius reacted emotionally. >> i don't have to look at the picture. i was there. >> take responsibility for what you've done, mr. pistorius. >> yesterday, nel also showed a video showing pistorius firing a gun at watermelons, on which you can hear him saying, quote, it's softer than brains. pistorius' attorney objected to that, calling it a legal ambush. there's word that russia withheld vital intelligence on one of the boston marathon bombers. russian officials did tell the fbi that tamerlan tsaranev was following radical islam, according to "the new york times."

the inspector general's review found that russia declined to share other details, such as a conversation between tsaranev and his mother on islamic jihad. the review found the fbi did all it could, based on the available intelligence. a missing north carolina man has been rescued from his kidnappers. investigators say frank jansen was taken over the weekend from his home in wake forest, to an apartment in atlanta. the fbi refused to provide details or motive for the kidnapping until a news conference later today. a rare gathering of american presidents in texas today. president obama and the first lady are attending a civil rights summit in austin. the president will deliver the keynote address in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the civil rights act. he will be joined by three of his predecessors, presidents carter, clinton and george w. bush. time, now, for a look at weather across the nation. there may be some showers in the upper midwest and western pennsylvania, as well as new york. other than that, a gorgeous day. >> we could see record-high temperatures in the southwest. maybe hitting 100 in the desert. warmer than average in the northwest, with highs in the 60s and 70s. 50s and 60s in the northeast. paying the price. millions of bank of america

>> and then, i looked at our front door. it was like a movie. houses were exploding. and the next thing i remember -- the next thing i see, is our neighbor's chimney coming into our front door. here i am, trapped, with my child. and this debris. and i can't move. >> she broke both legs as well as one of her arms. and she suffered facial injuries. she so far has had six surgeries since the march 22nd slide. the california family rescued from the pacific ocean while trying to sail around the world has tweeted that they will share their story when they catch their breath. charlotte and eric kaufman arrived in san diego, aboard a u.s. navy ship with their sick baby and 3-year-old. on sunday, a national guard team had to pluck the family from their sinking sailboat. police in philadelphia asking for the public's help in trying to track down two gunmen who opened fire inside a hotel. check out the surveillance video

of the incident showing the men walking the halls, shooting at each other, with several innocent bystanders in the way. one man fired around a corner. the shoot-out took place ten days ago. a close call caught on camera. this driver in texas suddenly sees an out-of-control cement truck. and it's coming straight at him. incredibly, he escaped with barely a scratch and was able to smile and even laugh about the incident afterwards. the driver said he had the dash cam installed a year ago in case he was ever involved in an accident, probably never thinking anything like this would ever happen. wow. good thing he's safe. and in case you're ever tempted to park in front of a hire hydrant, look at these photos from boston last night. fire crews had to bust the windows out of this bmw to run the hose right through the car because they needed a straight line in order to maintain pressure in that hose. >> i don't think that's covered by car insurance. >> i don't think it's covered by car insurance. >> double-whammy.

lesson learned. one health note this morning. some questions being raised about flu drugs like tamiflu. a new report is raising doubts about the benefit of the drug. it is described to treat flu. researchers point out that the drug often works but not always. flu experts say it helps reduce the flu's deadly side effects. now, to sports. the golf's first major of the year, the masters, getting under way this morning at augusta national golf club in georgia. >> coverage begins at 3:00 p.m. now, our friends at espn have last night's hoop action. >> good morning, america. he's stan. i'm neil. tommy edwards directing in los angeles. heat/grizzlies. >> a bicoastal update. dwyane wade out again for the heat. but lebron james was there. and he had 37 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. got that three-pointer plus the foul. fourth quarter, after the heat turn over, nick kalcalates.

very good. the atlanta braves say they are taking steps to never let this happen again. >> that's right. take a look at this. that's the american flag on fire, amid a fireworks presentation for the braves' home opener on tuesday. oddly, a team's spokeswoman said that flag did not catch fire. fireworks will never be set off from the top of the scoreboard again. >> have to rewrite the national anthem. the bombs bursting in air. the flag was still there. not that flag. >> not that flag. up next in "the pulse," oprah graces the cover of her magazine like you have never seen before. and amazing news for "simpsons" fans. where every, single episode will soon air in an epic marathon.

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. good thursday morning at 4:28. i am kristen sze. >> i am eric thomas. how is the forecast, meteorologist mike nicco? >> we have fog out there again. we have low clouds, too. here is live doppler 7 hd, thickest fog at half mile at santa rosa and 1.5 as napa. that is the story through the morning hours with the marine layer and the sea breeze. in the afternoon hours, by 11:00 we have a lot of sunshine but the coast at 55 to 63 and around the bay we have quite a spread, 64 to 76 and a spread inland from 72 in the north bay valley.

now the commute. not a last people. >> good news. it is quiet. we have a couple of accidents. we have one accident on 101 southbound at 280 the connection in san francisco at the 280 extension. let's go outside and look at the toll plaza where traffic is moving smoothly ambassador from the maze and you can see a few cars in the westbound direction and as we look from emeryville camera to the eastern span the drive toward treasure island is a couple cars as they try to push into the city so no accidents to report and it all looks clear. >> 4:29. develops news the bay bridge commute should be back to normal after lanes on theupper and lower decks were closed for emergency pothole repair and this was no ordinary pothole. abc7 news amy hollyfield is on the bridge with more. it was a big one and it

caused a big problem. we are on the bridge checking out the situation for you and it looks good this morning, all lanes are open and we have a camera facing this way for you, if you want to take that picture and show everyone, the roadway up here looks good and the repairs have been completed so the nightmare is over. the commute looks good. this is the repair work they did last night: a 2.5' hole was discovered on the upper check near fremont into the city. caltran says this happened because of cracks in the roads so they had to close this stretch. this was debris falling on the lower decks and that created a traffic gridlock nightmare. >> it was torture. horrible. i have opinion here two hours on the same street. i don'
