good friday morning. i'm alex perez, in for john muller. >> i'm diana perez. this morning, federal authorities will take over the investigation into a deadly tour bus crash in california. at least ten people died when the fedex truck collided with a bus packed with high school students about 100 miles north of sacramento. >> new pictures this morning taking moments after the impact show the fiery wreck. witnesses are now telling their stories. this is all that's left of the 18-wheeler and the bus that was packed with teenagers. charred ruins spread across the freeway. >> i went outside. and everything was in flames already. it was a couple explosion after that. >> i heard a loud sonic boom. and the whole house shook. >> reporter: police say, the fedex truck was heading south when it crossed the center divider, hit a car and slammed head-on into the charter bus going north, erupting into a massive fireball. >> i look. and i see a big, like, red mushroom. >> reporter: the kids on the bus were from los angeles area high

schools on their way to a college tour at humbolt state university. people who heard the crash raced to the scene. but they could only stand helplessly as flames held them back. >> a lot of people screaming and begging for help. with all of the flames and all the smoke, it was just cover your eyes. >> reporter: witnesses described one man who escaped with his clothes on fire. >> screaming for help. don't let me die. just help me. >> reporter: the drivers of the bus and truck are among the dead. police say the truck may have swerved to avoid a car. there were two buses heading to the university. this morning, anxious parents are still trying to find out if their children were on the one that crashed. and you want to stay with abc news for the latest on this deadly bus crash. live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." a big shakeup in washington this morning. the lead official for obamacare is leaving. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius is announcing her resignation today. the white house is insisting this was her choice. abc's tahman bradley is joining us now with all of the details.

good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, diana. president obama has been quick to defend sebelius, despite all of the problems with healthcare.gov. the former kansas governor has been the public face of the affordable care act. getting grilled at congressional hearings about crashes and other problems. sebelius took heat from republicans about the affordable care act itself. but it appeared she and obamacare had turned the corner last week with a late surge of enrollments for health insurance. just yesterday, she told a senate committee 7.5 million people have signed up. that's likely why sebelius is resigning now. she reportedly told the president she wanted to leave a month ago. president obama will nominate sylvia matthews burwell to replace sebelius. and republicans are looking forward to using her confirmation hearings to get a few more shots at obamacare. diana? >> all right. tahman bradley with the big story in washington today. thank you. there's still no word about the missing malaysia airlines plane but officials are sure

they're on the right track. during a visit to china today, the australian prime minister tony abbott admitted that time is running out for signals from the boeing 777's black boxes. the batteries are only good for about a month. and the plane disappeared march 8th. another blistering day of cross-examination for oscar pistorius is now under way. prosecutor gerrie nel picked up where he left off yesterday, attempting to poke holes in pistorius' claim that he mistakenly killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. at one point, nel bluntly accused pistorius of not telling the truth in his version of events. >> accidentally your fingers pulled the trigger? >> i started shooting at that point, my lady. >> at the intruders? >> at the door, my lady. >> so, it wasn't accidentally? >> my lady, i'm getting confused with this accidentally and not accidentally. >> pistorius refers to my lady, you hear him there, because he's addressing the judge who will deliver the verdict in this case. she sternly cautioned the prosecutor yesterday after he laughed at one of pistorius' answers.

the man who police say caused a deadly crash at a florida day-care center is now in custody. robert corchado has been charged with leaving the scene of an deadly accident. investigators say his suv struck the car that slammed into the kindercare facility. corchado has a long criminal history, beginning when he was just 13 years old. ten people are still in the hospital as a result of this crash. we are learning more about a daring rescue of a kidnapping victim. an elite fbi squad arrived just in the nick of time. officials say his kidnappers were discussing how to kill him. military contractor frank janzen was grabbed from his north carolina doorstep nearly a week ago because the suspects wanted a gang member released from prison. his daughter, a prosecutor, had put them behind bars. but the fbi was able to trace cell phone calls the inmate allegedly made from jail. a close call for hillary clinton on stage in las vegas. >> cycling about two -- >> yikes.

there you see it flying. the former secretary of state scrambling to avoid being hit by a shoe. she was speaking at a recycling conference and joked, quote, i didn't know solid waste management was so controversial. the woman who threw that shoe was hauled out by secret service and is facing criminal charges. and in texas, president obama sprang into action when a major wardrobe malfunction threatened the first lady. the president gallantly held down his wife's skirt when strong winds tried to lift it up as the couple boarded air force one. >> can you imagine if he had not done that, all of the pictures we'd be talking about now? >> yes. and had he not done it -- this picture, if you look at it and don't know what's going on, she's probably saying to him, what are you doing? he might be a little bit in trouble. but had he not done it, he would be in a world of trouble. >> yeah. he came to the rescue in that one. >> he did. very nice. time, now, for the weather from across the nation. scattered rain from arkansas, across the northeast into new

one of its worst days in years after investors bailed out of top tech stocks. facebook, google, amazon, netflix and electric carmaker tesla, all pulled down all three indices. there are fears these companies and others are overvalued. the stocks that shoot up fast tend to fall fast, as well. stock futures are up this morning. there's another problem with general motors ignition. the ignition locks on 2.6 vehicles may allow the key to be removed while the engine is running. all of the cars have been recalled for ignition switch problems. but fixing this problem requires different parts. a new report about travel complaints doesn't make for pleasant reading for some of the nation's biggest airlines. spirit airlines received the most complaints over the past five years. followed by frontier. the two largest carriers, american and united are not far behind. we're learning about what amazon calls its pay to quit

program. the retail giant offers workers at shipping centers a bonus once a year to leave the company if they aren't happy. it starts at $2,000 in the first year, up to 5 grand in the fourth year. and the big talker we were talking about this morning. some workers in france can look forward to a bit more peace and quiet than usual. that's because of a new agreement between unions and engineering and consulting companies. that agreement bans employees from working at work-related materials between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. most of those affected are in management positions. see? that wouldn't work on a shift like this. >> it absolutely would not. >> you would need that reversed to 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. >> the idea of waking up in the middle of the night to check my e-mail sounds very strange. >> alex wakes up every night. 1:00, 3:00 and 6:00? you're like my infant baby. >> more or less. >> and you check your e-mail because you're crazy. >> it's a crazy trait.

here's a sure sign of spring. washington's cherry blossom trees are hitting their stride. peak bloom arrived yesterday. and it looks like a perfect weekend for visitors to walk around and take in the pink and white flowers. the cherry blossom festival runs through sunday. now, for a look at morning road conditions. rain in the northeast could make trouble. watch out on i-90 and 95. slick roads in minnesota to northern michigan and the rockies. >> it's a good day to fly. we have no major airport delays expected. back to the news, now. and the latest on the stabbing

at a pittsburgh-area high school. >> an attorney who met with alex hribal says it looks like bullying may have played a role in this incident. he described the 16-year-old as dazed, like a deer in headlights. and says he doesn't fully grasp what he did. abc's ron claiborne is hearing stories of heroism from that awful morning. >> he stopped right in front of me and took a stab to me really close to his spine. >> reporter: protecting you? >> yes. he is the hero in this, for me. he was my hero in this. >> students are still in the hospital. two of them, in critical condition. officials say they're hoping to have that high school open for classes on monday. the texas woman who was convicted of killing her boyfriend with her high-heeled shoes spoke to the jury in person for the first time. ana trujillo took the stand in the punishment phase of her trial. she described her boyfriend was a controlling and needy

alcoholic. jurors decide she acted in sudden passion, she stands to get a lighter sentence. investigators are using dogs to search for clues on the series of shoots on roadways around kansas city. officials believe some of the shoots are linked. but they won't reveal how many or what the link might be. there have been about 20 suspicious incidents since early last month. you won't see the chimpanzees at the kansas city zoo today. a day after seven of them fled their pen. zoo officials say one of them used a long log to get on top of a wall. and six others followed. the animals never reached public areas. but visits were gathered behind locked doors for about an hour. zoo keepers will check for other security breaches later today. and a team of rescuers from seaworld are getting credit for helping a trapped sea lion. it was stuck in a buoy at the entrance of san francisco day. the team assisted it slide its head out and set free. and workers in china needed

and last night, he didn't break character in praising letterman. >> this man has influenced every host who came after him. and even a few that came before him. he's that good. and i got to tell you, i do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair. >> funny stuff. the move has been praised by jimmy kimmel and jimmy fallon. here's what colbert's friend, "daily show" host, jon stewart, said about the move. >> here's the exciting thing for me. i think stephen colbert is up for the challenge. while we wish dave the absolute best for a well-earned retirement, there's no greater joy than seeing a genuinely good man who works as hard as he can every day, and deserves all the success in the world, actually get that success. so, for stephen, we're just thrilled. >> that's pretty heartfelt there. >> it's going to be really fun to watch him actually be stephen colbert, the man he is and not this persona he is on television. i think people are in for a very

are in the 60's and 50's around the bay and the coast. the seven-day forecast is ahead. first, though, we have traffic. you may have heard of this terrible accident. there was a deadly crash north of sacramento. northbound i-5 at 32 there is a sig-alert. northbound lanes are still shut down. southbound lanes are getting through. c.h.p. does not believe the lanes will re-open until 7:00 this morning. this is because of a deadly accident on i-5 with nine people killed. amy hollyfield has more details on that story. eric and kristen? >> that is the story we begin with, the human toll of the tragic accident. a 10th opinion has died in the head-on crash between a tour bus and fedex truck. amy hollyfield has the latest

from our newsroom. amy? >> one victim is revealing how students on the tour bus survived. leyla gulen mentioned, the southbound lane of i-5 have just re-opened but the wreckage is there on the highway northbound lanes, though, are closed. these pictures appeared after the crash. an 18-year-old on the bus involved in the crash now says that the inside of the bus was filled with smoke and 40 students on board the bus escaped through a back window that someone kicked open. it all happened in the bling of an eye. ten people were killed including both the drivers from the tour bus and the fedex truck. more than 30 were hurt, some were critical, many suffering from burns. the tour bus was toless an and full of high school students. >> we are saddened to hear about a
