and good monday morning. a former kkk leader has been identified as the accused gunman who killed three people at jewish facilities outside kansas city. >> police arrested frazier glenn cross shortly after the shootings. cross has a violent past and is connected to a number of neo-nazi groups. abc's tahman bradley has the overnight details. >> reporter: this morning three people are dead after shootings at two different jewish sites near kansas city. police say it could be a hate crime. the suspect, seen here, is 73-year-old frazier glenn cross. the southern poverty law center which tracks hate groups says cross is an alias used by frazier glenn miller, who is a white supremacist and a former grand dragon of the ku klux klan. overnight, a vigil to remember the victims. ♪ >> reporter: the terror began

around 1:00 sunday afternoon on the eve of passover at overland park. a teen talent competition set to begin when police say the shooting started. dr. william lewis corporan and his teenage grandson reat griffin underwood were killed according to a family statement. >> it was really scary. i mean, people are calling their loved ones, and i called my mom, and she started crying, and then i started crying. >> reporter: from there the shooter reportedly continued several blocks to village shalom, an assisted living stat and opened fire. a female victim killed and the gunman shot at two others but missed them and was apprehended at a nearby elementary school. >> a shotgun was involved. we are exploring the possibility that a handgun was involved in shooting at the two persons he missed, and we are looking at a possibility of an assault rifle. >> reporter: in the wake of yesterday's shootings, police across the country saying they have increased their presence at jewish facilities this passover

holiday. john and diana. >> tahman bradley live for us in washington. thank you. >> now, we are learning the suspect has had several run-ins with the law and even ran for public office. frazier glenn close served in the military for 20 years and was forced to retire because of his ku klux klan affiliation. in this interview from 1984, cross says he is willing to do whatever it takes for what he calls his cause. >> god gave me a love for my people and for my children and for my race and for my country, has given me the desire, the motivation to stand up and do whatever is necessary to save our people and our country and our traditions. >> cross served three years in federal prison on weapons charges. the southern poverty law center said he unsuccessfully ran for north carolina governor in 1984 and for a state senate seat in 1987. we'll have much more on this coming up on "good morning america." well, the nation's midsection bracing for more wild weather today after getting slammed by a powerful line of

severe storms. more heavy rain and thunderstorm on tap and millions of people can expect to see some april snow. about 3 inches from kansas all the way to the great lakes. all right. well, people across the midwest are cleaning up after a weekend of wild weather. hail, fierce winds, even tornadoes. this is one of at least least three twisters that touched down in southern oklahoma last night. it looked pretty ominous, but there were no reports of any major injuries or of any damage. no such luck in east texas where a tornado is being blamed for destroying several buildings including three mobile homes. a high school was also damaged last night, and at least one woman was hurt. for more on what's tap today we turn to accuweather's molly cochran. >> thanks, john and diana. we have another mild day across much of the northeast. above average temperatures in new york city and pittsburgh. the next storm system bringing some heavy rain to the region by monday night. also going to cool things off and on the northwest side of this storm, we are talking snow. chicago picking up some snowfall for our monday including

detroit. it could be responsible for some major delays out of the international airports. off towards the south central cooler conditions in texas and oklahoma. also some rain along the gulf coast. some of these thunderstorms could be rather severe for our monday and monday night including new orleans and pensacola. john and diana, back to you. >> all right, molly. >> thank you. and now to a midair scare for passengers on a southwest flight from chicago to sacramento. the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in omaha last night to remove an unruly passenger. other passengers tackinged the man and tried to restrain him when he tried to pry open a door midflight. >> he got up and went to the rear of the plane and tried to open up the hatch. one of the airline stewardesses started screaming and as well as passengers were screaming help! one passenger said before the incident, the man came out of the bathroom soaking wet. after he was taken into custody, the plane was able to take off

again arriving in california two hours late. in a search for the missing malaysia airlines plane, there is mounting evidence that signals from the jet's black boxes may have finally gone silent. no new electronic signals from the boxes or whatever is making them has been heard since tuesday. tonight an unmanned submersible will be deployed to search the sea floor, a time-con supering task. it'll take just two hours for it to reach the bottom. the unrest in ukraine was the reason for the late night emergency meeting of the u.n. security council. that followed a promise by ukraine's president to use the military to end the pro-russian insurgency in the eastern part of his country. several government buildings in that area were seized by pro-russian militias over the weekend. the fear is that russia might use the unrest as a reason to invade. in south africa oscar pistorius back on the witness stand testifying in his own defense. he's once again being questioned aggressively by south africa's toughest prosecutor. gerrie nel relentlessly chipped away at pistorius' credibility

last week and his changing version of events surround the death of reeva steenkamp. now, his testimony seemed to be so damaging, one analyst called pistorius a defense nightmare witness. now, to chile where fire crews say some parts of a deadly wildfire that were declared contained had sparked back to life. that happened last night. that wildfire has already killed around a dozen people and destroyed 2,000 homes. the flames have forced more than 10,000 people to evacuate. firefighters had to let some neighborhoods burn because of lack of running water. investigators in california are still interviewing students about last week's fiery bus crash, the one that killed ten people. they say the bus screeched to a stop, but there were no skid marks from the fedex truck that slammed into it. some of the people killed were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from that bus. they are still looking into reports that the truck was already on fire before crossing the median, but investigators have not yet found any evidence of that. jews around the globe are ready to mark passover beginning this evening at sundown. preparations are in full swing in jerusalem and beyond.

terrorizing neighbors has been sentenced to an unusual punish many. a judge has ordered edwin avive to hold a sign declaring he is a bully. he is accused of picking on a family with disabled children for 15 years, spit in their face and tarred the sidewalks to stop their wheelchairs. well, a member of the san francisco 49ers is in a little bit of trouble after being arrested at the los angeles international airport. number 99, aldon smith, was arrested when he became belidge gent during a security check and said he was carrying a bomb. he could face federal charges. smith took a leave of absence from the team last season to undergo treatment for substance abuse. and from the lighter speed of sports, check out the ball girl from the baltimore orioles. you're about to see what's going to happen. she fielded that ball down the third base line. the problem is, it was fair. a fair ball. she had a smile on her face until she realized her huge mistake. ah, for those scoring at home, that's a ground rule double and a really, really big oops.

redwood city at pacific. police say the pedestrian was trying to run across the street and hit and killed at 2:00 this morning. the driver of the car who hit the man did stop and stuck around to talk to investigators and help with the case. they do not think the driver was involved -- drinking -- or that alcohol was involved. the pedestrian was a man if his 40's and he may have been under the influence of alcohol. they will look into that. they opened the road a few moments ago. police have cleared the scene and wrapped up the investigation. this morning, traffic is not impacted but police are still trying to figure why this happen ed. in the south bay, firefighters are going through the rubble of a
