center just outside of kansas city with the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. police suspect what happened here was a hate crime on the day before passover no less. witnesses say the man police arrested was screaming a nazi salute and smiling as they hauled him away. no one here could believe it. while hundreds of children and their parents were here for a singing contest and other events at this jewish community center police say a man armed with at least one shotgun was shooting at people in the parking lot. >> it was really scary. i mean, people are calling their loved ones. >> reporter: police say 14-year-old reit underwood and his grandfather dr. william corporon were shot and killed in their car. >> this gentleman who was killed, i am the mother of the son who was killed, and i know that they're in heaven together. >> reporter: inside the community center an immediate lockdown. >> we just had to block the doors off to the best of our abilities. >> reporter: within hours police

arrested frazier glenn cross, who also goes by the last name miller and according to to the southern poverty law center is a former grand dragon of the k ku klux klan. he drove to a nearby jewish assisted living facility shooting to death another victim before surrendering to authorities. he was screaming anti-semitic insults during his arrest. glenn miller has always been an open white supremacist. >> we have been tracking miller literally for decades. he is literally one of the most hard-core anti-semites i have spoken to. >> reporter: he launched a senate bid in 2010 producing this radio campaign ad. >> we sat back and allowed the jews to take over our government, our banks and our media. >> reporter: it was so chaotic, parents inside were considering putting their littlest ones in lockers to keep them safe. he's now being charged with

premeditated first-degree murder but has not yet entered a plea. robin. >> thank you very much, of course, thinking of all the families this morning. >> that's right, on the eve of passover. what a trail of hate he left. spring storms packing a punch. hail and heavy wind triggered tornado watches and a trail of damage down throughout southeast and ginger is tracking it all. >> wicked weekend from the great lakes down through the southern plains. more than 400 severe weather reports including tornadoes reported in iowa. oklahoma and texas. take a look. >> the cloud itself reaches two-thirds of the way to the ground. now it's going longer. all the way to the ground. >> reporter: at least five reported tornadoes raking the land. in oklahoma, iowa and texas. >> a tornado watch remains in effect. >> reporter: more than 400 severe weather reports from the huge hail in illinois to eastern texas, a high school shredded. and check out this stunning time-lapsed video from iowa. lightning filling the sky. in michigan, sunday was a day of

cleanup after damaging straight-line winds gusted up to 81 miles per hour. >> see that nice little transformer that's dangling from the top? that's why we have no power. >> reporter: thousands spent the weekend without power. and it's not over. louisiana, mississippi, parts of those states waking up to severe storms and they will refire this afternoon. so anywhere along the gulf through panama city up through birmingham, into far parts of southeastern arkansas who has to be on alert today. we'll come back with the snow -- that's right, snow, more than a half foot in some places. >> what? >> i know. stick around. >> you were talking about that when i left. you're still talking about it. >> you missed it. >> thank you. now to the latest on the intense search for flight 370. in its sixth week and entering a new phase officials fear the batteries in the black boxes are no longer working. and are now deploying a high-tech deep sea explorer to search for clues and david kerley is in washington for the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning.

it is time to stop listening and time to start looking, say the searchers so they have selected a 15-square-mile area here around these pings to start looking. to give you an idea how big it is, it is about two-thirds the size of manhattan and another clue this morning, they have found an oil slick about three miles to the northwest from this area. this morning, crews are putting this towed pinger locator out of the water. it did hear those four pings. [ pinging ] >> reporter: but its job now done. >> we haven't had a single detection in six days. so i guess it's time to go underwater. >> reporter: and this is the robot, the bluefin-21 that will go underwater. its job to map the bottom. it sends out sonar signals that return and produce a 3-d map. those four pings from the black boxes and some of those sonar buoys have allowed searchers to make a good guess as to where to look.

>> we've identified some areas we prioritized to go evaluate with the sonar search. our mission right now is to go look at the higher priority areas and see if there's anything there. >> reporter: they did find an oil slick three miles away. that oil is being tested but this morning they're concentrating on an area 15,000 feet under the water right on the edge of the bluefin's capability. a dark and forbidding place. >> i think this is an area new to man. it's not sharply mountainous or anything. it's more flat and almost rolling. >> reporter: mapping this 15 square miles will take days and the bluefin returns to the surface every 24 hours and they have to actually download the data and look at it. >> because they can't see it from down there and get it back on board. how about planes? will they still be searching from the air? >> reporter: they're going back up in the air again today. but this is about the end. the head of the search says another two or three days.

they searched everything so looks like the aerial search will come to an end before the week is out. >> thanks so much. going to turn to amy for the other top stories. good morning, amy. good morning, everyone. we begin with the big scare for passengers on a flight from chicago to california. a man on board began acting strangely and then his actions took a terrifying turn. this cell phone video captures the dramatic ending to a horrifying incident midair. >> some gentleman just decided that he wanted us to visit the lord today. >> reporter: monique lawler was 1 of 135 passengers aboard southwest airlines flight 722 en route from chicago midway to sacramento when it was forced to make an emergency landing in omaha. all reportedly because of this man. lawler says he was acting strangely at one point going to the bathroom and coming out soaking wet then trying to open the plane's emergency exit. >> one of the stewardesses started screaming. as well as passengers. >> reporter: lawler says a large

male passenger jumped into action tackling the unruly passenger. >> kind of subdued him. held him down and needless to say we were applauding the gentleman that held him down. >> reporter: authorities meeting the plane when it landed escorting the man off. the rest of the passengers made it to their destination with a dramatic story to tell. southwest confirms that an unruly passenger was taken off the plane but would not confirm any other details. well, a pro football star under arrest after an airport security scare. video from tmz shows san francisco 49ers' linebacker aldon smith threatening screeners at l.a.x. claiming he had a bomb. smith is now at the center of three criminal cases. now to breaking news overseas. it is deadline day in the standoff between ukraine and russia. ukraine had threatened to use military force today against pro-russian militias who seized government buildings in the east but those militias have not budged. overnight the u.n. security council held an emergency meeting. russia denied u.s. claims that moscow is stoking that violence. a massive forest fire in

chile claimed the lives of 12 and destroyed 2,000 homes. the flames jumping from hillside to hillside in this city of valparaiso. fire fighters had to let some neighborhoods burn because of a lack of water. new details about the crash between a fedex truck and a bus full of teenagers in california. investigators say there is no evidence that the fedex driver tried to hit the brakes so they are trying to determine if he fell asleep or was somehow impaired. that bus had seat belts but most students chose not to use them. and police say it is a miracle a driver survived this crash. you have to take a look at this. he lost control, drove off an 80-foot cliff along the british coast. that is his car down on the rocks but the tide was in at the time and the water cushioned his impact. he wasn't even seriously injured. incredible. and finally imagine you just won golf's most prestigious tournament. what are you going to do now? bubba watson had to make that decision after claiming his second green jacket in just

three years and, no, he did not go to disney world. a quick check on twitter reveals he went -- good man -- to the waffle house for what he called a champ dinner at 1:30 a.m. that's his wife by his side. #hashbrowns, #covered. i prefer mine scattered, smothered and covered. i'm a big waffle house fan. >> 1:30 in the morning. >> best time to have those. >> oh, yeah. >> bubba watson. we knew we liked him. >> okay, thanks, amy. we turn now to that urgent hunt down in florida for a black bear that brutally attacked a woman outside her home. an entire neighborhood on edge. residents worried they could be next and we have the latest from linzie janis from lake mary, florida. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, george, good news, wildlife officials say they may have captured the bear that attacked this florida woman. it all happened in her yard inside this gated community behind me.

this morning 45-year-old terri frana is recovering from an incredible bear attack. >> she's still traumatized from it all. >> reporter: frank frana says she was sitting inside this screened in porch at their central florida home saturday night when she saw a couple of bears headed toward the front of the house. >> she left the back porch area, walked towards the driveway and saw five bears going through the trash. >> reporter: that's when he says the approximately 200-pound bear stood up on its hind legs and began mauling her. >> the bear actually had my wife's head in its mouth and started to drag her towards the woods. >> reporter: but he says terri, kicking, screaming and punching eventually got the chance and ran for her life. >> the bear's jaws let her head loose and then it started on her arm, she said, okay, and she just -- the adrenaline of it all she broke loose. >> reporter: he says she ran into the house and collapsed. her 15-year-old son found her and called 911.

doctors needing 30 staples to close the bite wounds to her head. she also suffered claw and bite wounds to her arms, shoulder and upper thigh area. late last night, florida fish and wildlife commission officials told us they killed one bear and tranquilized three others. and those three tranquilized bears also euthanized. authorities say they'll run dna testing to see if they have the one that attacked terri frana. safe to say people, though, very much on edge. some of them afraid to even go for walks in the neighborhood. >> that's understandable. linzie, thanks very much. tomorrow marks one year since the boston marathon bombing. tree people, as you know, were killed, hundreds wounded. and this morning for the first time, the father who was standing right next to the second bomb with his entire family is speaking out. abc's dan harris is here with that story. >> reporter: robin, good morning. one year ago tomorrow the five members of the richards family

were engaged in a local tradition. something my own family used to do growing up, clearing on the runners in the boston marathon. this morning we're hearing from father bill richard who remained private. he is now in an interview and a just-released video. >> the boston marathon was a special day for our family. we didn't miss many, if any, over the last ten years. >> reporter: in this newly released video we hear from bill richard. seen here in this picture with his 8-year-old son martin by his side near the finish line of the boston marathon with suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. he's looming in the background, allegedly with a bomb on the bag right there on the ground. martin was the youngest to die that day. this shot of him holding a sign that reads -- "no more hurting people" became an instant global symbol of heartache. in his first interview, bill richard tells "the boston globe" after the first bomb went off hundreds of yards away from his family, bill told his wife, we

should go. but it was too late. the second explosion hit. minutes after that, he was in an ambulance with his family repeating these words to himself "it happened. it happened." bill had his eardrums ruptured and now despite two surgeries lives with an excruciating ringing sound. his wife was blinded in her right eye by shrapnel. their daughter lost her lower left leg and their eldest son emerged physically unscathed but psychologically scarred. this video just now surfacing was shot back in february in one of bill richard's very few public appearances. >> we are deeply grateful and humbled by your presence, thank you. >> reporter: he was speaking to runners who will be raising money for the martin richard foundation by participating in this year's marathon and teared up while reading a letter from a family friend who describes being left in the dust in a race with young martin.

>> and he's gone ahead of me now. >> reporter: despite all the pain and all the grief, they are determined to turn this year's marathon into something positive. >> we said over the last few months we would not run from the event, but embrace it to help us heal. to honor our son and his message and to pay it forward. >> an amazing family. tomorrow morning on the anniversary, they will participate in a tribute ceremony for the victims and survivors at a convention center in downtown boston and they along with hundreds of others will march to the finish line for a moment of silence and it should be an incredible moment. >> i know you'll be there. >> yes. >> boston strong. thanks, dan. we turn to that rescue in a utah canyon where a father and his two young sons were stranded for three days surviving with a single granola bar and precious little water. the father is speaking out this morning, and abc's john muller has his story. >> reporter: this morning a dramatic story of survival jason

knight thought he might never live to tell. >> anything could have happened. >> reporter: jason knight and his two sons, 8 and 11, rescued saturday after a nearly four-day ordeal stranded in utah's sandthrax canyon with barely any food or water. he planned to take them to a far less dangerous canyon when he took a wrong turn. >> it was supposed to be a three-hour tour. i made a wrong turn. everything out there looks the same. >> reporter: he then formed a plan telling his boys to stay put on a safe ledge while he continued down to find an escape. that's when things went from bad to worse with knight finding himself trapped in the narrow walls of the canyon. 350 feet down from his children. >> they could not hear me. i could not hear them. >> reporter: knight waited and worried for a gut-wrenching three days. finally a break when knight and the boys failed to return home on schedule friday. knight's wife alerted county officials who launched a massive search. incredibly a helicopter was able to locate the boys. it turns out they'd survived off a small amount of water and a

single granola bar. >> so i put them in a place where the helicopter could easily find them. i knew that if something bad happened to me if they found them they could probably find me. >> reporter: and find him they did. just a half hour later. incredibly they escaped dehydrated with only bumps and bruises. >> we were in a bad situation and without preparedness and without the rescue people, we wouldn't have made it out. >> reporter: for "good morning america," john muller, abc news, new york. >> wow. boy, good work by the rescue people. to ginger right now. don't sugar coat it. where is the snow coming? >> look at this picture. that would be nebraska on the roads. highway is shut down and snow, yes, moving to the north and east, so this morning i want to take a look outside denver too from earlier this morning. the roads a mess, they had a little bit yesterday then a little more and in some of the mountains which the spring skiing is going very well getting more than a half foot or more. look at what's going to come. not the only storm system, 4 to 8 in some places especially northern minnesota, northern

you, george. the lead prosecutor is picking apart every detail, every single word that oscar pistorius has said, a feisty pistorius has been trying to fight back in court breaking down several times and forcing the court to adjourn twice. >> we love you. >> reporter: this morning, oscar pistorius welcomed by adoring supporters outside the courthouse. inside gerrie nel, aka the bull terrier picking up right where he left off. >> your version is so improbable that it cannot be reasonably possibly true. >> reporter: again pounding the blade runner about what happened before he shot his model girlfriend when he says he heard intruders. >> what did you shout? >> i screamed, i said get the [ bleep ] out of my house. get the [ bleep ] out of my house. >> with respect to the court i'll just repeat what you said. get the bleep out of my house.

that's what you shouted at reeva. isn't that why you got emotional now. >> reporter: pistorius saying he heard a noise that night and fired out of fear. but also testifying that he did not intend on firing at an intruder or reeva. >> why are you getting emotional now? >> i did not fire at reeva. >> reporter: earlier the prosecutor honing in on how he first warned reeva. >> if somebody were to say that you whispered, that person would be lying. am i right? >> that's right, my lady. >> you know who that person is? because somebody said it. >> no, my lady. >> it's you. you said it. you said, "i whispered to reeva." >> pistorius fighting back more animated than previous days trying to explain the contradictions. >> i must have made a mistake by saying whispered. i meant it low. >> reporter: nel is attempting to use pistorius' own testimony against him trying to puncture ho

holes in his version of events. well, for the first time the prosecution is bringing up those screams neighbors heard. neighbors heard a man and woman screaming. pistorius is now trying to convince the judge those shouts were his so look for the prosecution to continue this aggressive line of questioning. george. >> okay, lama, thanks. now to chief legal affairs anchor dan abrams. the prosecutor picking apart every detail. >> this may be the most important day in the trial yet. this is the day where prosecutors show that his story that he thought that there was an intruder falls apart. they're going through each and every detail, where were her jeans found, the duvet cover versus blood spatter, where her shoes found at the house all this to say he never believed that there was an intruder. he knew that she was still in that bed. >> now which side of the bed she was on. >> a crucial question, because, remember, pistorius says he got his gun from underneath his bed. he got the gun from underneath the bed on the side she usually

slept on. he's claiming she happened to be sleeping on the other side on this particular night. except that her flip-flops or shoes were found on the side she usually slept on. so this is crucial. this basically says, wait a second to this judge, can you really believe his story that he wouldn't have known if he's going to get his gun from underneath the bed that she wasn't in the bed anymore and she's not responding? every time he's yelling and screaming and saying -- they're basically trying to show none of this adds up. >> we see how aggressive this prosecutor is. he doesn't just ask questions, he -- >> he's calling him a liar again and again. it's as if we have a closing argue. calling him a liar. saying he's tailoring the evidence repeatedly in the case. neff be allowed in a u.s. courtroom. the judge would immediately say, please stop badgering the witness but here they're allowing it, whether it's effective or not, whether it would be more effective to show

and a scare at a concert in oregon. up to 1500 people had to quickly evacuate the venue in portland when a crack opened up in that floor. the support beam underneath had apparently cracked. police had to control the crowd outside but thankfully no one was injured. a new controversy over spending in the catholic church. the archbishop of newark, new jersey, plans to spend half a million dollars of church money to expand his weekend home. well, not surprisingly, more than 17,000 parishioners have signed a petition in protest. and more tax evaders could slip through the cracks this year as millions of americans are scrambling to meet tomorrow's tax deadline. we are learning the irs will have the fewest agents auditing returns since the 1980s due to budget cuts and new irs responsibilities. and finally, an embarrassing moment on the field for a young girl with thousands of spectators looking on. she makes a great play on this foul ball, she thinks. the only problem was that was a fair ball.

51%, confidence, 49% said competence. you just explained one part of why you have these differences. what are some others? >> it's really interesting, george. we dug deep. first the definition of confidence which is critical. what turns our thoughts into action. and if you start to think about that for women, why aren't we acting? some of it is science. we were surprised. our brains do work differently. it's controversial, but it's true. women tend to ruminate more. testosterone really encourages risk-taking in men but also find it's society, the playing field is not level. that's hard for us to deal with and there's some things we're doing in raising our girls that aren't ideal. >> a lot behind it. >> a lot behind it. >> you mentioned about the upbringing, that last thing. can you ex-planned on that? >> i was surprised. we're all encouraging our girls to do everything they can do now but we're raising them to be too perfect. the perfectionism thing is a killer for girls. because they're not learning to fail. they're not taking risks. boys do that all the time. >> yes. >> little boys do it all the

is an inspiration to me. >> good news is news too. >> my best friend brad one of many best friends is a reporter in chicago. we worked together in grand rapids, michigan, about eight years ago something happened where he started falling and started having these dizzy spells and we didn't know what it was. falling in work at a live shot while reporting and very embarrassing and for a year went undiagnosed and misdiagnosed and then eventually came up with a disease. it's very rare but it affects the bone behind your inner ear and basically to fix it they've had to do crane yacht economies, brain surgeries and why it was so impactful to me is because it's something i do. we're all very visible. you see everything about us but he took it and he said, too bad. i'm going to have a cane when i do my live shot and it's become part of his persona and his little character and that's what i love about who he is, not one

minute you sit in the hospital room and think how am i going to go on to the next report. six weeks later he's showing off and proud to be healthier and fighting it. ♪ >> our viewers have inspired me. i have received boxes and boxes and continue to receive support letters, people who hand knitted me beautiful things, prayer shawls, been blessed by priests and made with love is what everyone says and most of these people have survived something or have a loved one who survived something so there's somebody who kifound out they have cance because i have cancer. >> when you feel like you have thousands of people who know exactly where you are, they are walking in your shoes every day and you're like, if they can get up, i can get up and if i can get up and inspire somebody else to get out of bed each and every morning when they're in the middle of chemo or fighting
