good tuesday morning. one year ago today, lives of so many people changed forever, as they lined the streets of boston to watch the marathon. >> today, tributes will mark the anniversary of the bombing who killed 3 people and injured more than 260 others. >> and it started with this scene when 3,000 people showed up for a photo shoot at the finish line to show their support. abc's tahman bradley, live in boston with more. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning from boston, john and diana. it was exactly one year ago that terror struck here. but did it not break this city's spirit. the people here are united. and they're going to stand united again today. today, a celebration. boston's resilience. the city pays tribute to the victims and survivors of the marathon bombings one year ago today. [ explosion ] two explosions at the finish line. a stunning terror attack. three people were killed. more than 260 injured. including roseann sdoia, who

lost a leg and is now learning to use a prosthetic. >> i don't think anyone knows what they are capable of doing until you are forced to be in it. >> reporter: it's the same story for heather abbott, another survivor. >> i learned that i'm much stronger and more resilient and stronger than i ever imagined. >> reporter: under enormous security, survivors, first responders and dignitaries will walk the finish line for a moment of silence, at 2:49 p.m., the exact time the first bomb went off. >> it's a tough day for survivors. one year anniversary of the loss of a loved one. change of a life forever. it's also, i feel, a big step in the healing process. >> reporter: people around the country are also paying tribute. these runners raced in a month-long relay from los angeles to boston to raise money for the wounded. the runners traveled 10 to 20 miles. then, passed the baton to runners in another city. >> it's really cool to actually handle the baton, everyone's handled from california to here so far.

but some cities could see record lows today. and that cold front is triggering some violent storms like the one that mangled these campers on the mississippi coast. about 30 r.v. trailers and campers were tossed around last night when severe storms struck with straightline winds. some residents said they didn't think they would make it out alive. no one was seriously hurt. chicago weather had been on a weather rollercoaster. the city was coated in white after a quick spring storm moved in. dumping three inches of snow in some suburbs following weekend temperatures that hit 80 degrees. more on what's in store for today, here's accuweather's jim dickey. >> good morning, john and diana. storm system marching eastward today. wide impacts from that soaking rainfall and some snow. it's being fueled by a push of arctic air that's moving east. and all of the areas outlined in blue here. you see the jet stream diving southward, allowing the cold air to move in.

challenging record lows this morning. many spots below the freezing point certainly. and with that, we're going to see snow continuing. ohio valley, into the great lakes. severe storms possible in the southeast. john and diana, back to you. >> jim, thank you. prosecutors in kansas are calling the deadly attack on jewish community centers there a hate crime. the suspect could be charged as soon as today after what appears to be a life of bigotry. abc's steve osunsami has more. >> reporter: police say the man with the bullhorn in these volumes of videos from yesteryear is the face of hate. frazier glenn cross, who also goes by the last name miller, is now 73 years old. and according to groups who have been tracking him all this time, is a former grand dragon of the ku klux klan, and is a lifelong and raging anti-semite. police say he came to this jewish community center, determined to kill jews with a shotgun and at least one pistol. he's accused of shooting dead 14-year-old reat underwood, and 69-year-old grandfather, william corporan, had just pulled into the jewish community center for

a singing contest going inside. >> i hope he's singing in heaven, with all of the angels because he has the voice of an angel. >> reporter: mindy corporan rushed to the scene to find her son and father. >> as i pulled up, i saw that he was lying on the ground. and my first thought was that he had a heart attack. he was just lying there. quickly, i realized it wasn't that. and i knew that my dad was in heaven. >> that idiot absolutely knocked a family to its knees for no reason. >> reporter: police say cross drove a mile away to this jewish assisted living facility, where they say he shot and killed terri lamanno in the parking lot. she was there visiting her mother, which she did every sunday. steve osunsami, abc news, overland park, kansas. search for flight 370 has entered a new phase. crews are using the bluefin underwater drone to look for the missing plane. the drone spent six hours underwater on its first day out.

it was forced to surface when it went lower than its optimal depth of 2 1/2 miles. it had to return to the ship where its data was downloaded. the bluefin will take a second plunge today. tensions between the u.s. and russia are ratcheting up. and a phone call between president obama and president putin doesn't appear to have helped. the call came after a russian fighter jet repeatedly buzzed an american destroyer in the black sea. the white house called that a provocation. on the phone, president obama warned putin against meddling in ukraine, where the unrest is reaching a boiling point. and he urged russia to move its troops away from the border. after several days of intense grilling, this morning, oscar pistorius' cross-examination has ended. pistorius and the chief prosecutor sparred for a fifth day over how he killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. before he left the stand, prosecutors say pistorius armed himself to kill steenkamp. pistorius said he did it because he was afraid.

drivers across the country, seeing an uptick in prices at the pump. it's now $3.66 a gallon. up 6 cents in the past week. 11 cents higher than this time last year. west coast prices are higher. hitting $4.16 a gallon in california. the spike being blamed on refinery maintenance and the switch to summer blend. american consumers are hitting the stores more often. the latest report on retail sales shows the largest gain in 18 months. sales were strong in the second half of last month, as the harsh winter began to ease. the positive numbers fueled yesterday's gains on wall street. it's april 15th. that means that the clock is ticking for procrastinators scrambling to file their taxes before the midnight deadline. this year, there won't be as many audits because of budget cuts. the irs will have the fewest agents auditing returns since the 1980s. today is a huge day if

matt keller is on the scene. matt? >> the call came in 20 minutes ago and firefighters are working on a town home here. you can see inside the garage there are a couple of cars that are destroyed by a fire. there was flames on the roof and firefighters brought in ladders trying to get to the area of the flames. people are out of the homes and i am not sure if the firefighters told them to get out or if they just want to see what is happening but it is impacting the neighborhood off of jackson avenue in east san jose near capitol expressway exit off 680. a two alarm has been called, a second alarm, and they will be busy for the nbc couple of -- the next couple of hours getting the flames
