and hello, blood moon. the blockbuster eclipse that had millions up all night, partying with mother nature. and check out all these crazy photos. one small step for man, one giant leap overnight for selfie-kind. and good morning, america. i don't know about you, robin. i slept through the blood moon. those photos so spectacular early, early this morning. so many stayed up to see those amazing images. >> beautiful. >> and we have a lot to get to today. today marks exactly one year since the bombings of the boston marathon. take a look at this photo in "the boston globe" this morning. all those people whose fates came together, returning to the finish line for this photo. >> the responders, victims, the runners all together, as you can see. the president marking this day with a moment of silence at the white house at 2:49 p.m. that is the same time two bombs exploded near the finish line

right there last april 15th. >> we will have live coverage on abc news. but right now let's get right to ginger for the latest on the storms walloping the south with dangerous winds. >> it's not just damaging winds. but we've got a whole slew of flood warnings this morning and it's the deep south that's feeling the brunt of it. the expanse of the storm very large but look at this video overnight from gautier, mississippi. 60, 70 miles per hour flipping the trailer homes. and the stories that we were hearing from people trapped beneath there. we are so fortunate this morning to know that no serious injuries were happening. but, of course, we're going to be talking about more severe storms today from florida all the way up to virginia, carolinas, southeastern georgia. and that's just a look at the severe storms. remember, flooding has been a big issue and will be even as far north as new england. there's flood watches in effect right now. we're going to have so much more coming up in your nation's weather. >> all right there, ginger, thank you. now, to the latest on the

deadly shootings in kansas. the suspect in this hate crime expected in court this morning. abc's steve osunsami joins us this morning from overland park, kansas. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning. the state and federal prosecutors hope to provide their charges here. all against the accused gunman and lifelong white supremacist. ♪ and the rockets' red glare >> reporter: 14-year-old reat underwood loved and lived to sing. on sunday he was here with his grandfather, dr. william corporan, hoping to audition for a singing contest that he waited three long years to enter. >> reat was going to the community center with my dad. >> reporter: one song he was going to sing "you'll miss me when i'm gone,"

words that have new meaning for his mother. >> i told him i loved him. >> reporter: mindy corporan found her son and father shot and killed in the jewish community center parking lot. >> as i pulled up, i saw that he was lying on the ground. and my first thought was he had a heart attack. you know, he was just lying there. very quickly i realized that it wasn't that, and i knew that my dad was in heaven within seconds. and i ran around the truck, and i saw my son lying there. >> reporter: police say the boy and his grandfather had barely made it out of the car and were gunned down by 73-year-old shooting suspect frazier glenn cross. >> that idiot absolutely knocked a family to its knees for no reason. you know, no one thinks they're going to have funerals to plan. you know, no one believes this will happen to you, to your family. >> he was with us for a wonderful 14 years. he had a really full life for a 14-year-old, and we were very blessed. >> reporter: this morning, terri

lamanno is also gone too soon. police say the 53-year-old occupational therapist was killed outside of this jewish assisted living facility. she went there every sunday to see her mother. in a statement, her family says, "she was the best mother, wife, sister and friend that anyone could ask for. she lived for god and the people she loved." investigators tell us their suspect is not cooperating as people here move forward and plan funerals. george? >> so sad. okay, steve, thanks very much. . we're going to move now to the crisis in ukraine and rising tensions between the u.s. and russia after a russian fighter jet buzzed a u.s. warship in the black sea. abc chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz tracking this all from washington. martha, this maneuver echoes of the cold war. >> reporter: it does, george. this was a russian jet that screamed by a u.s. destroyer in the black sea, not just once, but 12 times over a 90-minute period. it came within about 1,000 yards

of the u.s. ship and was flying at just 500 feet above sea level. that is lower than the washington monument. so you can imagine that it made quite an impression. the crew of the destroyer warned the russians to stay back but clearly that did not happen. and there's little doubt that this was not some rogue crew, that, in fact, there was very likely coordination from someone in the kremlin. now, it wasn't armed, and it happened in international waters, but the u.s. is still calling it irresponsible and provocative. you also have to remember that for russia, the black sea is kind of like a backyard swimming pool. they don't like having a u.s. ship in those waters that border ukraine and russia, and they certainly know that ship is monitoring things in ukraine and elsewhere. >> meantime, reports of ukraine government forces moving in on russian protesters today. and that phone call between russian president vladimir putin and president obama last night, they seemed to talk past each other. >> reporter: they did. the call was clearly tense. the russians blamed the

ukrainians for the unrest. and president obama blamed the russians. >> okay, martha raddatz, thanks very much. now to the hitch in the search for flight 370. the robotic submarine sent down to hunt for the search wreckage and those all-important black boxes had to be hauled back up because it had reached the limits of how deep it could go. abc's david kerley is in washington, has the latest for us. do bring us up to speed, david. >> reporter: it was a short dive. it was just six hours. should have been 16 hours. somewhere in a 15-square-mile area that they are searching off here, they have the four pings. they are moving in this area. we don't know exactly where they're searching. here's what happened. the area they're looking is 15,000 feet down. and that's the maximum for the bluefin-21, the mapping robot. when it hit its maximum depth, the bluefin returned to the surface. now, they did get that six hours of data, but they found nothing in the images so far. the bluefin should be back down at the bottom at this hour right now, once again, mapping the

bottom, robin. >> so as you were saying, they were able to get six hours of data, but nothing was able to send? >> reporter: nothing they saw so far. and to get the 15-square-mile air mapped out, it should take three to four days. they lost a bit of time yesterday. here's what the bluefin does. it's like a lawn mower going back and forth. off the bottom, it produces images. we have images from other searches before, a couple of sunken ships and a bicycle that were taken by side scan. it's amazing what they can actually see. once the wreckage is found, a remote-control submersible with arms will be brought in to dig through the wreckage, looking for the black boxes. >> not going to give up. not going to give up. david, thanks so much. now, to amy with the other top stories. >> robin, good morning to you. and we begin with news that is hitting you in the wallet. gas prices on the rise. take a look at this map. in just the past week, prices rose 18 cents per gallon in los angeles.

they rose 13 cents in chicago, and in san francisco prices are up 10 cents in just the last week. the national average is approaching $3.70 per gallon. that's more than a dime higher than this time last year as those refineries perform spring maintenance and switch to summer gas blends. and authorities in california have some explaining to do following the arrest of two suspected serial killers in anaheim. steven gordon and frank cano are convicted sex offenders. they're now accused of killing at least four women. police believe at the time of the murders, the men were still wearing the gps ankle bracelets. somehow they went undetected, and investigators are now fearing there may be more victims. a major fire in new york city. it took crews more than three hours to control this brush fire. heavy winds fanned the flames on staten island. it brought traffic to a halt. flames shot 50 feet into the air. and we have new pictures from the historic forest fire in chile killing 15 people.

entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash. witnesses described the flames as a tidal wave of fire. and a management shake-up at general motors. two top executives leaving the company including the head of public relations. gm says the departures are not related to the ignition recall that has triggered a criminal investigation. and an autopsy has revealed the former wrestling star known as the ultimate warrior died of a massive heart attack. james helwig was suffering from heart disease when he collapsed outside an arizona hotel and died last week. he was just 54. and olympic swimming star, michael phelps, coming out of retirement. he will be competing in arizona next week. this is his first real race since the london games. apparently his record 22 medals aren't enough after all. all right, finally, a shining example of the power of social media. and we say shining because of this wedding ring inscribed with the unique phrase, "my love,

my life, my lobster." it belonged to greg lindsay who lost it on a california beach two years ago. the tide never took it away. and a woman was walking by. she found it in the sand and then she posted a picture of it it on facebook. thousands of people reposted it. it only took two four days, and a friend of greg's wife saw it online and told him about it. they reached out. they got their ring back on saturday, after two years. if you're wondering about the lobster, you know, "friends," rachel and ross described each other as being each other's lobster. >> you're my lobster. >> yeah. >> i got it. >> thank you. we're going to turn now to the teenage girl arrested for tweeting a bomb threat to american airlines. copycats pranksters are now cropping up, so the airlines and police are cracking down hard. ryan smith has the story.

>> reporter: a twitter prank about bombing an airline leading to one teen's arrest and this morning to a new challenge for airlines dealing with pranksters seemingly pushing the same jokement on monday, dutch police arrested a dutch girl who calls herself sarah on the site, after she sent this tweet to american airlines on sunday. "hello, my name's ibrahim and i'm from afghanistan. i'm part of al qaeda, and on june 1st, i'm going to do something really big. bye." that prompted a swift response from the airline mentioning, quote, they take these threats very seriously and will be forwarding her details to the fbi. the teen responding, quote, i was kidding. i'm so sorry. i'm scared now. >> it clearly forces authorities to spend time and manpower to track down these individuals to assess whether these threats are real or not. >> reporter: the incident, now appearing to attract internet copycats inundate i inundating airlines with threats like this

to southwest airlines. and dozens of others, exasperating authorities. american airlines tells abc news, quote, the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. southwest saying they take these threats, quote, very seriously. neither elaborating on the threatening tweets. as for what happens next, airline pranksters could be in for some rough air. >> the message has to get out. we're going to hold you accountable even if you think it's a prank. >> reporter: as for that young woman who sent the initial tweet, well, police questioned her and they say whether she will face charges will depend on whether she's done anything like this before. >> so irresponsible. ryan, thanks very much. now, to boston and the tributes ahead today, exactly one year after the bombing. and so many examples of resilience planned for boston strong. abc's dan harris is live at the marathon's finish line for us this morning. good morning, dan. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. in just a few hours, thousands of bostonians, including many of the survivors, will march together to a spot up boylston

street, right behind me, which is the finish line of the boston marathon. and at the exact moment when the bombs went off, they will hold a moment of silence. it will be a collective display of what's become known as boston strong. while the bombs temporarily knocked my hometown off its feet tearing into what's been an annual family tradition for many of us, what the world will see today is this city's grit and resolve. did you know before all this happened how tough you were? >> no. i think if somebody told me this was going to happen to me, i would have been devastated. i had no idea i had it in me. >> reporter: it's so impressive though to walk with you. i mean, you really would never know. >> thank you. >> reporter: more than 260 people were injured in the attack. heather abbott, who lost her lower left leg, personifies boston strong, a spirit articulately most colorfully by big papi. >> this is how --

>> reporter: and most musically, by all of the fans who now belt out local anthem, "sweet caroline," with extra oomph. ♪ sweet caroline >> reporter: more than 260 people were injured. many of them, as well as first responders, doctors, nurses, political figures and local sports heroes showed up for a photo shoot at the marathon finish line the other day, which this morning graces the front page of "the boston globe." as for heather abbott, over the past year, she's met everyone from michelle obama to beyonce, while learning how to walk again, even run. in fact, she has four prosthetics, including a waterproof one and one for high heels. >> i do. i do have some options when it comes to legs. >> reporter: it's amazing to me that you actually have a sense of humor about this and in an awesome way. >> i think you have to. i think it helps other people feel more comfortable with it, and it helps me to laugh about it sometimes. >> reporter: she is an

impressive woman in many ways, and next week on marathon monday, not only is she going to be out here cheering on the runners, she's actually going to run the last half mile alongside a woman who helped save her life one year ago today. robin, back to you. >> dan, i know, as a boston native, dan, you must be just so proud this morning. >> reporter: absolutely. absolutely. >> and abc news -- thank you, dan -- will be live beginning at 2:35 eastern this afternoon for the procession to the marathon finish line and the moment of size at 2:49. >> so moving to see the whole city rise up. >> it is. lara, you have incredible pictures. >> indeed. we do want to switch gears now to that blockbust er astronomical event overnight that just lit up twitter and instagram. the blood moon. millions of us staying up to catch a glimpse of the lunar eclipse. there's the blue moon. the man in the moon like a big pizza pie, but none of these phrases quite make the cut when

describing the spectacular lunar light show we saw just hours ago. a natural phenomenon called the blood moon. seen here on nasa tv's live stream as it takes on a fiery glow. this is the first of four lunar eclipses of blood moons we'll see in the next year and a half. they happen when the earth's shadow covers the moon which can take on a reddish color due to the scattering of sunlight through the earth's atmosphere. last night, blood moon was one small step for man and one giant leap for selfie-kind. thousands of photos being posted of that glowing pie in the sky. others celebrated by gathering for viewing parties like here at the 46 griffith observatory in los angeles. >> it's just a wonder of nature. >> reporter: but for some, the appearance of the blood moon signifies that, houston, we may have a problem. conspiracy theorists link lunar eclipses to major historical events like the fall of constantinople

announcement to share with all of you. michael strahan is live, here, themselves, for that announcement. the top secret announcement. we'll get to that. we're going to begin with the latest on the trial of oscar pistorius. the prosecutor ended five days of cross-examination this morning. and lama hasan is covering it all in south africa. >> reporter: after a grueling seven days on the stand, oscar pistorius, telling the court he shouldn't be held responsible for the death of girlfriend reeva steenkamp. >> we shouldn't blame you for the fact that you shot her. am i right? >> i agree with mr. nel, my lady. >> you're not to blame? >> my lady, i believe someone was coming out to attack me. >> reporter: the so-called bull terrier wrapping up his cross-examination, saying the model was killed after an argument with the blade runner. >> you shot four shots through that door. whilst knowing that she was standing behind the door. >> that's incorrect, my lady.

>> reporter: combative. >> say yes, i shot and killed reeva steenkamp. >> i did, my lady. >> reporter: and relentless. prosecutor gerrie nel, picking apart every detail. >> what did you shout? >> i screamed. i said, get the [ bleep ] out of my house. get the [ bleep ] out of my house. >> reporter: every statement given by pistorius, who often broke down on the stand. >> i did not fire at reeva. >> reporter: the final argument for the judge and assessors, who will decide the paralympian's fate. >> you armed yourself for the sole purpose of shooting and killing -- >> not true, my lady. >> reporter: his attorneys, countering. asking pistorius to read a valentine's day card steenkamp gave him on the day of her death. she wrote -- >> i think today is a good day

to tell you that -- and it says, i love you. >> reporter: previous testimony reports that neither had said i love you before. while pistorius is off the stand. but the trial is moving forward, with his defense lawyer, barry roux, taking center stage, saying that it was dark the night of the shooting. >> picking apart the prosecution's case. let's go to abc's chief legal affairs anchor, dan abrams. five days of cross-examination, two days on the stand. did he help himself? >> he was a good witness. he was emotional, often at the right times. he withstood the cross-examination. and these facts are really problematic for him. there's inconsistencies in his account. and most importantly, and we need to take a step back here. he shot his own girlfriend in his home four times, behind a door in his toilet.

that is, in itself, is an enormous problem for oscar pistorius that he has not overcome. >> i was surprised. his attorneys got another chance to question him after the cross-examination. very short. >> there's not a lot to say. he's now said what he needs to say. his defense, in large part, is believe me, with regard to what i was thinking at the time. and number two, the police moved items around. and as a result, you can't necessarily trust the crime scene as it was found. beyond that, there's not that much more to say. >> there was a bit of a surprise. that love note. >> yeah. she loved him. he may have loved her more. and yet, that's not really that relevant to what happened that night. i think it's very clear that there was love between them, to some degree. and probably, as he even said on the stand, he loved her more than she loved him. and that may have been the problem here. that may have been what led to this. i don't think that's particularly significant, in terms of evaluating his guilt or innocence. we heard at the very end, the

assessors and the judge asking a few clarifying questions. this was it. this was the most important piece of this case. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. now, to the emotional interview with the woman attacked by a 200-pound bear. it happened right in her own driveway. and abc's linzie janis has her story. >> i just said, god, please, don't let this be my end. >> reporter: terri frana fights back tears, as she explains how she managed to escape from the jaws of a roughly 200-pound black bear. >> those teeth were just digging into my skull. >> reporter: frana was reading in the screened-in porch of her central florida home, when she spotted danger. >> this bear came charges through here. >> reporter: worried about her 10-year-old and 11-year-olds who were outside, frana headed towards the front yard. but just then -- >> that bear came charging at me. so, i started to run.

and he stood up and just pushed me down. and bit my -- the side of my leg. and then, bit my side. and then, grabbed my head and started dragging me towards the woods. >> reporter: frana says she kicked and screamed and prayed to god. >> and i said, please, i can't leave my kids. my babies. >> reporter: doctors used 30 staples to close the wounds to her head. she also has bite wounds on her back, arm and outer thigh. >> it was god that answered that prayer. gave me a chance with my family. >> reporter: now, armed wildlife officials are patrolling the neighborhood nonstop, making sure it doesn't happen again. for "good morning america,"
