forces evacuations and rescues from michigan to vermont. and prince george takes on. as the royal couple lands in sydney. kate, mellow in yellow. william and kate trading off carrying baby george, as they say, good day, mate. and we do say good morning, america. prince william, to travel abroad as a baby. now he has a son traveling down under. we have two big breaking stories for you this morning. the very scary moments in boston. two backpacks being blown up. part of a hoax, it turned out to be. dan harris, standing by with the latest in just a moment. >> lots of high security ahead of monday's marathon. let's get to the huge ferry disaster. a ship packed with high school students on an overnight trip to a popular tourist destination in south korea. it sank so fast.

and abc's chief foreign affairs correspondent, terry moran, has the latest on the search for survivors. terry? >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a desperate situation. and it is ongoing. it was supposed to be a trip to paradise. 325 high school students, their teachers, other crew members and passengers en route to the resort island of jeju, the korean hawaii, it's called. then, disaster struck. desperate scenes off the coast of south korea. frantic efforts to rescue passengers from the stricken ferry, including hundreds of high school kids. more than 100 vessels and aircraft came to help. then, a horrible sight. the ferry sinks. almost 300 remain missing. young survivors describe the chaos. the announcement told us we should stay still, this student who scrambled to safety said. but the ship was already sinking. and there were a lot of students who did not get out of the ship. many passengers were at breakfast. others, still in bed.

when survivors say they heard a loud crash. and the ship began shaking and immediately listing. it was very intense, this survivor recalled. the ship was tilted more than 45 degrees. anxious relatives gather at the school where the youngsters were students. now, a scene of dread and fear and weeping. survivors say many people may have remained trapped inside the ship when is sank in murky waters off the korean mainland. divers are looking inside the wreckage. and helicopters and rescue boats are scouring the scene, looking for anyone who might have escaped the doomed ship. no one knows what caused that ship to sink, what caused that collision that everybody felt. but survivors are pointing to one possible problem onboard the ship. they were told to stay in place. that may have been a terrible mistake. >> and the ship went down quickly in a couple of hours. give us a sense of the scope of

the rescue operation right now. >> reporter: it is vast. george. it's right off the coast of south korea. and there are hundreds of ships and vessels involved. 87 ships, lots of helicopters. divers in the water. the problem is, the water is about 54 degrees fahrenheit. that means survivors have a couple of hours before hypothermia sets in. >> oh, gosh. that's a scary situation. terry, thanks very much. now, details coming in on the big scare in boston overnight. at least two backpacks blown up by police. we know one was part of a hoax. abc's dan harris is there at the finish line. good morning, dan. >> reporter: hey, robin. good morning. it all played out right behind me at the finish line. this is a prime example of how tense this city is right now. this is not what this city needs right now, explosions. even if they were controlled ones this time. at the finish line of the boston marathon. a dramatic end to a scare that

began just as the crowds were clearing out after tuesday afternoon's moment of silence for the victims of last year's bombings at the finish line. according to police, an officer spotted this man. he's a student, whose last name is edson, and seen here in cell phone video, wearing an unusual black getup with no shoes in the rain. alicia shot this video before watching police confront edison. >> as i got closer, i could hear him yelling, "boston strong, boston strong." something just felt really off. >> reporter: boston police say their officer asked edson what he had in his bag. >> at that time, he stated that there was a rice cooker in the backpack. >> reporter: given that the alleged marathon bombers used pressure cookers, the police moved quickly. >> they started pushing people away. at that point, i figured it was best to just get out of there. >> reporter: the streets were shut down. the bomb squad was called. they used robot to probe edson's

bag, as well as another bag spotted nearby. and then, the controlled detonation. in the end, there were no explosives in either bag. what was in edson's rice cooker? confetti. the other was left behind by a fleeing tv news crew. edison is now being charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device. >> i want to emphasize the fact we are taking this seriously. the safety of the public is utmost in the wake of last year. >> reporter: you're going to see a lot of extra security come marathon monday. extra police and extra barricades. but police say this will be the safest place on earth on marathon monday. robin, back to you. >> all right, there, dan. thanks so much. >> it's just maddening. the tweets yesterday to the planes, and now this crazy stuff. more wild weather. so much of the country feeling winter this morning with snow and record cold. ginger, you did warn us. >> i did.

it's one thing to forecast, and another thing to wake up and feel it. and, hey, spring, i got a question for you. is it something we said? really? monday, we were all in the 70s and 80s. in shorts and enjoying it. then, 24 to 36 hours later, this is what happens. from yesterday morning to this morning, some 30-plus degree drop. 18, the difference. even in orlando. we're not alone here in the northeast. it goes all the way to the southeast. and i got to tell you, from the high winds in atlanta, all the way to the mid-atlantic, it's feeling like february. roaring winds, forcing two ships in virginia beach to collide. gusts to 70 miles per hour, pushing a rig vessel and container ship right into each other in the lower chesapeake bay shipping canal. temperatures plummeting across the northeast. in cities like new york, philadelphia, d.c. and pittsburgh, swinging more than 40 degrees since monday. overnight, up to three inches of snow fell from virginia to new york city. and it's not just the cold. fast-moving floodwaters forcing evacuations in michigan and rescues in vermont. swollen rivers rising to nearly

appears to be recent and authentic. the cia is not commenting. now to breaking news with the standoff with russia. a new warning overnight that ukraine is on the bring of civil war. we get reports this morning that members of the ukrainian military in action for the first time against pro-russian forces are defecting and joining the russian side. alex marquardt is on the front lines with the latest. alex? >> reporter: good morning, amy. this operation is still in its early stages, trying to take back what has been seized by pro-russian forces. including this town where we are. we've seen defections by ukrainian troops, like these ones. as fears grow that russia will respond to this by launching a an invasion. on the move, ukraine's military deploying its forces for what's being called an anti-terrorist operation to quash the violent unrest that has swept eastern ukraine. there are signs this operation is falling apart. this group of tanks and armored personnel carrier have defected

along with a unitt of elite soldiers. they've driven into this town occupied by pro-russian forces and raised the russian flag. president putin is warning ukraine that a bloody crackdown on protesters will start a civil war. a threat that has ignited talk of a new cold war between russia and the u.s., as the white house accuses russia of supporting and even coordinating this violent uprising. with each passing day this country is falling deeper and deeper into chaos, splitting apart before our eyes. both sides taking up arms, taking the country to the brink of all-out war. amy? >> alex marquardt with the latest for that. a new setback overnight in the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370. for a second day in a row, the robotic submarine searching the ocean floor for debris had to be brought back early because of technical problems. nothing has been found so far. and an unusual emergency on a flight from las vegas to minnesota. an allegiant air jet flew into a swarm of bees.

it was so bad, passengers say it smelled like the plane was on fire, as thousands of bees flew into the engines and actually blocked the windshield. pilots immediately had to turn around, landing safely back in las vegas. and a horse and carriage ride turned into an nightmare for people in savannah, georgia. something spooked the horse. it took offer through the streets, carashing into cars. it threw the driver from the carriage. five passengers including three children who were inside, managed to jump off safely. no one was seriously injured. that's incredible. and finally, the frantic search for a missing 3-year-old nebraska boy is over this morning. take a look where he was found. yes. he just wanted to get his hands on one of those fuzzy little toys inside the claw machine at a local bowling alley. somehow he got inside. he twisted and turned. i don't know how he did it. it was a marvelous feat. but he's okay. they had to call the vendor to open it up and get him out. and guess what? he got a toy for his troubles.

i don't know. that's rewarding. he might try that again. i would be nervous about it. >> why would he go in there? >> i have no idea. i thought the openings were this big. but, he found a way. >> where there's a will. >> where there's a toy. >> oh, you surpassed ginger. >> thank you. now, to the deadly shootings in kansas. the suspect in court for the first time on tuesday. formally charged with killing three in a hate crime at two jewish centers over the weekend. potentially facing the death penalty if convicted. abc's steve osunsami joins us from overland park, kansas, with the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the accused gunman had no friends or family in the courtroom, outside of reporters and lawyers. the only other witnesses were two women from the jewish community center who came to see justice at work. wearing a jailed-issued suicide prevention gown and looking disoriented, 73-year-old frazier glenn cross made his first court appearance, telling the judge he needed a court-appointed lawyer.

>> i don't have the money. >> reporter: the judge set his bond at $10 million and assigned him a lawyer from topeka. he did not enter a plea. state prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder for the shooting death of terri lamanno. outside the village shalom senior living facility. and capital murder for the killing of reat underwood and his grandfather, william corporan in the parking lot of the jewish community center. >> he's charged with capital murder, which is the most serious crime that you can charge in the state of kansas. it has the most serious penalty you can getly is the potential of the death penalty. >> reporter: the d.a. says more charges could come later. >> we are continuing this investigation. and there's a good possibility that additional charges could be forthcoming. >> reporter: federal prosecutors may pursue their own case, as well, as they believe this former grand dragon of the ku klux klan intended to kill jews, even though all of the victims happened to be christians. his next court appearance is now april 24th. and now begins the funerals and

memorials. funeral services for the 14-year-old and his grandfather are friday. george? >> thinking of all those families. okay, steve, thanks very much. we turn now to a dramatic 911 call after a woman was attacked by a 200-pound bear in her own driveway. the frantic call from her son has just been released. and abc's linzie janis has the story. >> i need help in my house. >> reporter: this morning, the harrowing 911 call made by terri frana's 15-year-old son, as she screams in the background, having just survived a vicious attack in her backyard. >> she came in screaming. she said a bear attacked her. >> reporter: frana's husband then grabbed the phone. >> she's breathing. she's just traumatized. she's breathing and she's bleeding hard. >> where is the animal? >> they're off in the woods. that they were in the garage. there was three of them. >> reporter: moments earlier, the 45-year-old mother of three

says an approximately 200-pound black bear had her head in its jaws. when the bear loosened its grip, she ran. and in a chilling detail, she said while she was being mauled, her phone dialed her husband. >> he has a voicemail of 5:43 of me just screaming. >> reporter: frana said once inside, all she could think of was her two other children who were still outside. >> as soon as i got in the house and i knew they were safe, i felt like i could breathe and calm down, and just know that this was a true miracle. >> reporter: overnight, wildlife officials announced they had put down a seventh bear, calling their bold behavior around humans unusual and dangerous. and offering a reward for tips on anyone feeding them. for "good morning america," linzie janis, abc news, new york. >> that is something to keep in mind, linzie. thank you. now, to the royal road trip.

and once again, he's emotional. oscar pistorius no longer on the stand. head down, retching again, when listening to how his model girlfriend was firing bullets in the bathroom door. the defense calling roger dixon. he contradicted the state saying their investigators are wrong. and steenkamp was not facing the door. >> the person was not facing straight on. they were at a slight angle. then, sound so critical to this case. the defense trying to back up the blade runner's account that he fired into the door and afterwards tried to break it down. first, the cricket bat. then, the gunshots. they sound similar. earlier, witnesses testifying to hearing screams and then gunshots. the defense hoping audio recordings demonstrate they may have confused gunshots with the

cricket bat and pistorius screaming. but the lead prosecutor, again, on the attack, discrediting dixon's expertise, because he is a forensic geologist, meaning he is an expert in minerals, a material found in the earth, not sound. >> are you a sound expert, sir? have you received training in decibels and sound? >> reporter: gerrie nel trying not to concede an inch off the pouncing of inconsistent statements from pistorius. like how he warned reeva. >> i warned reeva to get down and call the police. >> did you whisper? >> i didn't whisper, my lady. >> reporter: to the moment he fired. pistorius calling it an accident. then, later saying. >> the first thing that ran through my mind. i needed to arm myself. that i needed to protect reeva and i. >> reporter: now the defense turning to sound and forensics to prove pistorius' story.

there is a two-week recess. advising the state and the defense to use this time wisely to pore over the 2,000 pages generated in this case, saying that's exactly what she's going to be doing. robin? >> thank you, lama. abc's chief legal affairs anchor, dan abrams, is here with much more on this. we've seen the prosecutor going after the expert. and not so much. >> the defense may have been trying to do too much with this guy. this guy became an all-purpose expert. and the prosecution said, how are you an expert on this or that? one of the crucial points that lama was referring to, where was reeva steenkamp standing inside that toilet cubical. because if she was facing the door, that would suggest there was an argument going on, which is what the prosecution is trying to suggest. the defense is trying to suggest, she was maybe bending over, maybe listening, but not facing the door. and without a credible expert on their side, that's a real problem for them.

would the expert be able to say it was dark in the room? yeah. maybe he couldn't have seen exactly where she was. yeah. but that's not going to be particularly helpful. >> what is the strategy of the defense going forward? >> we know they're going to call a couple more forensic experts, ballistic experts in particular, about the angle of the bullets, et cetera. they're going to need something here. oscar pistorius on the witness stand was okay. but there were real problems in his testimony. i think they're going to need something like another neighbor, who offers a different kind of account than the ones we heard from the neighbors who already testified. i think the defense is going to need something more than somewhat discredititied experts to come in and testify. >> they're going to have a two-week break coming up tomorrow. >> the prosecution asked for -- the defense didn't have much of an objection to it. ordinarily they might in a case like this. not here. >> all right, dan. thanks very much. we turn to the disturbing surveillance video out of houston, where a man broke into a home and prowled around the baby's room.

police trying to find the burglar. and ryan owens with the story. >> reporter: it's enough to give any parent goosebumps. a burglar snooping around your baby's room, while you sleep. >> he was inside, walking around like it's his house. >> reporter: look closer at the home surveillance video. the guy even shines his flashlight right at the little boy in the crib, before he moves on to other rooms in the house. >> when i looked at the cameras, i was infuriated, saw him walking back and forth in my baby's room. and i was really upset. >> reporter: lee believes the burglar claim climbed in an unlocked window in houston. he says he and his wife slept through the break-in. but he thinks that flashlight made their son open his eyes. >> he woke up. my boy thought it was me. so he went back to sleep. >> reporter: the family didn't even know they had been ripped off until a neighbor found their laptop and briefcase in the yard the next morning.

and just eat it as is. we can make a beef hash for breakfast, with maybe poached eggs. here's what i did right here. i made a french onion spread, by almost caramelizing onions. okay? and then, put it in a blender. and sort of made this onion sauce. >> oh. >> sliced the beef. and then, the onion sauce, a little crispy shallots. that's what i would do. look at that. >> i'll take a bite. >> all right. napkin right there. all right. so, that's filet mignon. a lot of things you can do with that, for sure. what have you got next? what i made. roasted asparagus and garlic penne. you can take the ingredients and add to it.
