over. and baby onboard. that surprise announcement, from chelsea clinton, that she is pregnant. this morning, the grandparents couldn't be more excited. and chelsea's moving public tribute to her mom. >> i just hope that i will be as good a mom to my child and hopefully children as my mom was to me. and good morning, america on this good friday. we are heading into easter weekend with a number of breaking stories right now. including that overnight tragedy on everest involving at least 12 guides. >> the guides had gone early to fix ropes for climbers before the dangerous and deadly avalanche hit right above base camp. abc's david kerley is here with all of the details. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we know that everest is extremely dangerous. steep and deep canyons of ice. but this was an avalanche that swept down at an unexpected time

of day. that avalanche swept down mt. everest early in the morning, killing at least 12 and leaving at least 4 missing. as rescue crews search frantically for any survivors. the victims, all sherpas. the legendary local master mountaineers who come from nepal. they had gone up to fix ropes, setting the ropes for the hundreds of climbers who were gathered at base camp. the climbers were going to scale the mountain in about a month when the weather conditions are more favorable. gavin turner was watching at base camp when the incident happened. >> the experience was great, it was going well. and then, suddenly, there was a huge thud. we got covered by this enormous cloud of snow and snow dust. for a few seconds, i thought, wow. this is going to maybe take me out. >> reporter: the avalanche happened right under camp 2, on the area of the mountain known as the popcorn field. it's 21,000 feet. allen arnett reached the summit of mt. everest back in 2011. >> the sherpas are more at risk

because of the -- how often they're carrying and going through the ice wall in this particular area. >> reporter: gavin, from australia, who saw the avalanche, tells us that the sherpas are the backbone of the efforts of climbers to get to the summit. gavin says he's going to contemplate whether he stays on the mountain and makes an attempt at the top of the world in light of what happened this morning. >> that's understandable. we're going to get the latest on the ferry disaster in south korea. almost 300 passengers still missing. the search, more and more desperate. the captain will be charged. and abc's gloria riviera is covering it from jindo, south korea. good morning, gloria. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. news of an arrest warrant issued for the captain and two crew members. we got details about what was said when the ship radioed for help at 8:55 a.m. the message, our ship is in danger. and then, can't move, please come. finally, a question from land,

any danger to human life? and the answer, impossible to check. overnight, new video from inside the ship shows the fight for survival. released by korea's kds network, passengers growing afraid. water's rising, said one. water's coming in. the extreme tilt wedging these people into a corner. some passengers walking on walls. this man, using a fire hose as a lifeline. elsewhere onboard, a teacher texted the students. if you can get a lifevest, wear it. okay, replies one. then, everyone, let's live and see each other soon. this morning, divers got inside the doomed vessel for the first time. just after 10:00 a.m., a pair of navy divers swam into the cafeteria, where it's believed so many were trapped. 45 minutes later, the team starts pumping compressed oxygen into the ship, in the desperate hope someone needs it. they found several bodies huddled together. and there was this moment, the ferry sinking even further into

the sea. gone. cranes arriving to try to salvage the sunken ship. the u.s. navy, this morning, also aiding in the search effort. today, the criminal investigation into the disgraced captain's actions told abc news, when the vessel started to tilt, he put the third mate in charge. someone with just over a year's experience at the helm. one of li sung yung's best friends is missing. my friend, he was ridiculously nice, he said. i have no idea how someone is going to survive in that cold water. inside this gym, wall-to-wall grief. so many loved ones still missing. their families, desperately waiting for answers and clinging to hope. george, i'm so sorry to say there is more devastating news to report from here tonight. the vice principal from the high school, found this afternoon, he had been on the ship but survived. it appears he took his own life, unable to go on in the face of

this tragedy. george? robin? >> such a painful situation. thank you, gloria. now, to kansas city, where police tackled and arrested a suspect in those highway shootings. it was a dramatic takedown in the city suburbs. and abc's ron claiborne is here with all of the details. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. in custody but not charged. this is a huge break in that case. the series of random highway shootings that has terrified people in kansas city, missouri, for the past month. police say they believe they have the person responsible. this morning, a city on-edge, may finally be able to rest easier. >> we've apprehended what we believe to be the suspect in the highway shootings. >> reporter: several dozen police officers descended upon this home in a kansas city suburb, where they arrested a male, believed to be in his 20s. authorities searched the home, towing away a car with illinois license plates. the suspect lives in the grandview neighborhood, close to the grandview triangle, where several highways intersect.

that's where six of the reported shootings took place. >> the investigation is ongoing. we're still looking at evidence. >> reporter: the suspect is in custody but not yet formally charged. and the possibility of accomplices has not been ruled out, police had this one message for motorists on their local highways -- >> we want to make sure that the residents in kansas city know that they're safe. the safe this whole time. >> reporter: in the past month, 20 cars have been hit with gunfire along kansas city highways, leading to an urgent manhunt, involving the fbi and the atf. two people were shot in their legs. another in the arm. for now, it seems authorities were able to track down their suspect. and kansas city police are holding a news conference in a few hours in which they're expected to provide details about the suspect and what led to that person. investigators reportedly got a number of useful tips on a hotline. one from a witness reporting a car driving erratically on a highway. and had the suspect, the police, under surveillance for the past week. now, robin and george, his

arrest. >> they thought it was going to take somebody seeing something and saying something. >> reporter: apparently what happened. exactly. >> thank you. now, to the crisis in ukraine, after a deal signed yesterday by the u.s. and russia, there are new questions this morning about whether it will stick. and abc's martha raddatz, tracking the latest developments. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. the next few days are critical in determining whether the russians and their supporters will honor this agreement. but this morning, there is no sign that the agreement is working. this morning, defiance. pro-russian militants occupying buildings in eastern ukraine say they will not leave until the ukrainian government steps down. thursday's agreement between the u.s., russia, ukraine and the european union is clear. the militants must retreat from those ukrainian government buildings, seized in violent protests. and the ukrainians promise those who lay down their weapons will be granted amnesty. but within hours of the

agreement, president obama voiced doubts about the russians' intentions. >> my hope is that we actually do see followthrough over the next several days. but i don't think, given past performance, that we can count on that. >> reporter: and just hours before, president putin said he still reserves the right to send in russian troops, who remain by the thousands along ukraine's border. and this morning, more about those disturbing reports of anti-semitic leaflets, calling on jewish citizens to register or face deportation. the local rabbi telling abc, the flyers were handed out to the congregation by three masked men, a move that outraged u.s. officials. >> this is not just intolerable. it's grotesque. it's beyond unacceptable. >> reporter: it is unclear who is behind those flyers. jews are not being asked to register by any official. the rabbi told us, it appears to be a hoax, an effort to inflame

native was just 15 when he started translating radical videos and helping jihadists transfer money. a milestone for president obama's signature health care plan. 8 million people have now signed up for obamacare. that's 1 million more than projected. and 35% of the new enrollees are under age 35. that's just shy of the administration's goal of 40%. a controversial medical breakthrough. for the first time, scientists have successfully cloned cells from human adults into embryos. the cells are from two men ages 35 and 75. they were then used to produce tissue that perfectly matched the donors. this research could be instrumental in finding a treatment for diseases like alzheimer's, diabetes, and heart disease. and a big first in outer space. scientists discovered a planet almost exactly the size of earth where the temperature could be just right for some liquid water, which we all know is

critical to life. the planet was spotted by nasa's kepler space telescope. but it's 490 lightyears away. police in houston believe they have arrested that burglar who was seen in this shocking home surveillance video, lurking over a baby's crib while the parents were sleeping. a flurry of tips poured in after the video was released. and an 18-year-old suspect was arrested in an unrelated case, but burglary charges are now pending. a wild scene on a texas highway. this mustang was caught on camera speeding down the road on just three wheels. no word if the car had been stolen or how it lost that front wheel. but eventually, it did have to come to a stop. an unwelcome guest at the white house. the secret service cannot catch him. a red fox has sneaked on to the white house grounds and taken up residence, tripping alarms and feeding on the first lady's

vegetable garden. how dare he? he is pretty sly. there are reports the president himself saw the fox from the oval office once. and a lot of people are having fun with this headline. fox giving the white house trouble. i mean -- >> what do you mean? >> whatever do you mean, amy? >> call the dogs out. >> yeah. exactly. no. can they find a fox? apparently not. >> thanks very much. now, to one of the country's most elite ivy league institutions. dartmouth college's president publicly calling for a halt to drinking and sexual misconduct that he says has damaged the school's rep constitution and cricketed to a drastic plunge in applications. abc's linzie janis is in hanover, new hampshire, with the latest for us. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, robin. from dartmouth college green. the university president is calling for action to change a campus culture, where he says drinking has become the rule, not the exception.

and where he says, there's a general lack of regard for human dignity. >> toga. toga. >> reporter: it's the film that inspired "national lampoon's animal house." but this morning, dartmouth college is acknowledging that 36 years after the iconic film's release, extreme behavior, including sexual assaults, dangerous drinking, hazing and racism are threatening its reputation. the ivy league university's president tied the issue to a 14% drop in applications this year. and now, he's calling on students, staff and alumni to do more to change campus culture. >> behavior by a few rogue actors will destroy the unique campus culture that we know and cherish. enough is enough. >> reporter: dartmouth is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the department of education, into its handling of sexual assault complaints. and right now, prospective students are being bombarded with these advertisements, paid

for by an independent advocacy group, claiming the school has a sexual assault problem and to urge them to think about before enrolling. >> i was warned before i came to dartmouth. i thought, i'm a strong woman. i'll be fine. >> i've seen guys get girls drunk for the purposes of sleeping with them. >> reporter: in response, the 245-year-old college has listed a range of measures it's taking, including plans to implement one of the toughest university policies on sexual assault. >> i'm really proud to hear that the college is taking a stand against sexual assault and acknowledging its presence. >> reporter: an acknowledgment that many hope will help dartmouth college put a reputation for generations of extreme behavior behind it. the president of dartmouth graduated from this university the year before "animal house" came out. and this week, he told students, while much has changed since then, more has stayed the same. several students we spoke with last night told us there are many problems here, including the sexual assault issue. many of them saying they're aware of a number of victims.

what's a likely defense here? >> the likely defense, she didn't mean it. assuming she did send these texts. i didn't actually suggest that there was going to be a murder. i didn't mean that i was really trying to hire someone. prosecutors will have to show this is more than talk. that she actually had the intent to find someone to try to kill. and that's going to be the challenge. >> how are you going to do that? >> you have the problem with this witness. this guy, feinstein, who has gone from being a witness, also to a suspect. he's got a long rap sheet. he's the one who she's texting with. he, in theory, becomes the crucial witness. and now, he's a being problem for prosecutors, as well. when you actually think about how crazy this case got, right? it goes from her reporting that she's being stalked to her becoming a defendant. him going from being the witness in all of this, to now being the

suspect in the cyber stalking. that's what makes this case so nutty. >> you need a score card. >> really, to keep the who did what, how did it change? when did they go from being, you know, victim to suspect? et cetera. i don't think this is going to be that easy a case for prosecutors. let's see what they've got. but being able to show that she actually meant it is going to be the legal challenge. >> a lot of people watching this one. dan, have a good weekend. >> thanks. you, too. turning to outrageous stories of fraud. people who claim they had injuries collecting workers compensation. living high until they got caught. >> cathy caswell, come on down. >> reporter: a fortune in cash and prices isn't the only thing ka cathy collected. she was claiming an on-the-job shoulder injury made her unable to stand, run, reach or grasp.

prosecutors demanding an arrest warrant for the captain of that ferry that sank in south korea. nearly 270 people remain missing this morning. 25 confirmed dead. investigators say the captain left his third mate at the helm before the ferry sank. that third officer had just one year of experience on the job. divers entered the ferry for the first time this morning, finding several bodies huddled together. in colorado this morning, just north of fort collins, with a school bus and a passenger vehicle left several children injured. it was very serious. the bus was carrying nine children that attended local elementary and middle schools. and two brave boys are back with their family this morning after fighting off a carjacker. listen to this. a man drove off with the 7-year-old twins and the 1-year-old brother when the mom ran into the house to get the bottle. the twins attacked the suspect,

you're expecting." but in the surprising article in the may issue of "elle" magazine, revealed more and more women are turning to surrogates. not because they can't conceive, but because they don't want to. it's a phenomenon some are calling social surrogacy. >> this is a wonderful opportunity for women to have more choices. >> reporter: dr. saira jhutty runs an agency that matches surrogates with women who have nonmedical reasons for not wanting to carry their own babies. she says their reasons run the gamut, from not wanting to interfere with their careers to being afraid of what pregnancy will do to their bodies. >> we have people who are afraid of being pregnant. some people work in an industry where image is very important. so, they don't want to have to go through the changes that happen in the woman's body when they get pregnant. >> reporter: but even with the interest in social surrogacy on the rise, it's still a touchy subject. >> women are really guarded about issues involving their

bodies and pregnancy and surrogacy because they're afraid of being judged. >> reporter: and that's not the only thing giving some women pregnant pause for concern. with surrogacy costing around $100,000 or more per child, it may not be for everyone. >> you have to ask yourself why you're doing this. are there real benefits of bypassing the beautiful experience of carrying the child? >> reporter: for "good morning america," paula faris, abc news, new york. >> joining us, now, dr. jen ashton, our abc news senior medical contributor. i know you want to weigh in on this. how common is this? >> not common at all, you guys. in 2012, there were just about 2,000 of these social surrogacies. this is not even legal in every state in the country. so, it's really, really rare. >> and there are some guidelines from the american society for reproductive medicine. want to read them now. it says, the surrogates should only be used when a true medical condition precludes the intended

parent from carrying a pregnancy or would pose a significant risk of death or harm to the woman or the fetus. these are just guidelines. they're not binding. should they be binding? >> this is a slippery slope, right? there's legal issues, social, medical, financial. i mean, this is something that is incredibly complicated. and we have no data on this. we have no long-term data. in science, we like to refer to that. even doctors are struggling with the question of what is a valid indication? >> and one of the reasons, apparently, is some women have a fear of giving birth? i think everybody is slightly afraid when they walk into that labor room. but there's a lot more to fear ahead. if that's what's stopping you, i say big red flags. >> how about the first time your kid turns to you and asks you something, and you go, i have no idea? >> you get over that. >> that's every day. it's my job as an obstetrician, it's the job of a midwife, to help a woman over the nine months of her pregnancy, deal with those fears.

let's go back for people who don't know, what's your journey been like so far? >> winter 2007, that was just a surprise, when the doctor said, we did a biopsy on your appendix, and you have cancer. like, the first thought, i'm going to die. there's probably an expletive before the thought, i'm going to die. can't say it. my second thought was, i'm going to die and i'm going to leave my daughters. and i can't do that. >> reporter: two surgeries and six months of chemotherapy, stu emerged cancer-free. but it came back. >> at least for me, this is likely not going to be something i'm ever going to kick. so, now what? >> reporter: when you say, you think rite's something you're never going to kick, you don't want to know the prognosis?

it doesn't matter to you? >> i don't want to know how many years you think i may have left. how many months you think i may have left. let's say it's stage iv, it's going to make me scared. more scared. i don't need that. >> reporter: so, he comes here. and he fights. fights his trainer, darren. and he believes, beat back the cancer, that wants to ravage his body. doesn't it feel good, though, to be winded? >> it feels good to be winded. >> reporter: yeah. >> having trouble breathing. >> reporter: yeah. >> chest hurts. >> reporter: you're alive. >> i'm alive. >> reporter: your two precious daughters. you always light up, stu, you always have. and i know most parents who face something that you're facing, that's what you think of. >> i know they feel very strong, real scary, worried thoughts about me. i know that. but i worry about them because i don't hear much from them about

it. >> reporter: and what about you? you're their daddy. and i know that is your chief motivation to stay here, for them. so, how do you deal with it? >> that's my focus. why do you want to stay alive? for them. i want to walk them down the aisle. i want them to call me when they're 26 years old and they want a condo that they can't really afford. i want them to call me and say, dad, can you give me a loan? i want to say yes. that's what i want. that's what i need. really need. that's what i always wanted and needed, with them, for them. is to be dad for a long time, as long as they need a father. >> reporter: how are you able to physically get in that ring after chemo? >> it's for the mind, better
