>> good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm matt keller in for katie marzullo. we will start with a quick look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> good morning, matt. it is going to change quite a bit from day-to-day. this morning we are pretty much status quo or stratus go because we have a good deal of low cloudiness in the bay. it look from our exploratorium camera you see san francisco not doing too bad but east bay hills, vollmer hills looking at the fog and as well as the north bay. a mix of clouds this morning. 50 gilroy, 47 redwood city. the forecast this afternoon calls for temperatures to stay fairly similar. starting out cooler. two to three degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. we look for numbers at the coast to range from the upper 50s to the low 60s with the breezy

onshore winds around the bay. mid-and upper 60s. near average today. 70 to 75 inland. enjoy it. we have a big warmup and then a big cool down which includes some rain all in the upcoming work week. matt. flush. >> thank you, lisa. in developing news a woman has life-threatening injuries after a car drove into a bus station in san francisco. it happened around 9:30 last night. police say a car driving northbound on mission street jumped the curve and hit a pole, as well as a woman at the bus stop. >> at this time speeds are under investigation and we are looking into impairment. we know she's a 42-year-old san francisco resident. and the driver is also a san francisco resident in his 40s. >> police say they are talking to witnesses. looking at surveillance video to figure out exactly what caused the crash. developing news in san jose. a chp officer recovering from

injuries after being hit by a car. it happened on 101 just before 11:00 last night. the officer was injured in his leg. no word if this was considered a hit-and-run. new developments this morning about that tragic ferry boat accident in south korea. captain and two crewmembers have been arrested. the captain admits he was not at the controls when the accident happened and an inexperienced third mate was steering the ship. a high school vice principal who organized the trip for the students was rescued on the ferry wednesday, but was found dead two days later from suicide. in a note he said he wanted his ashes scattered where the ferry went down. at least 32 bodies have been recovered and about 300 people are still missing. in san francisco members of several korean churches prayed today where they gathered last night. they gather ford a special good friday sermon. one said the boat trips are common at south korea schools so

it had a strong emotional impact on people who are from there. >> in the beginning it was really shock. it became a power to unify members in the church. >> one person from the south san francisco congregation said a family friend is still missing. >> it could be a month before we learn what caused the death of an oakland woman at a music festival. the 24-year-old collapsed at a taxi area last saturday. she died thursday at the hospital. the riverside county coroner is not ruling out a drug or alcohol overdose. they ordered toxicology tests to determine the exact cause but that could take up to four weeks. the festival kicked off their second weekend yesterday. >> i'm sure people will do it again. i hope is doesn't happen. >> it's easy to get excited like about the party and music, and anyone can offer you anything and go with the flow and you don't know about the consequences. >> the promoters say they are saddened by the death. they call it unfortunate, but isolated. >> a street in piedmont covered in dirt following a landslide is

back open this this morning. this shows what was a resident's steep yard. it buries much of the road at 11:00 yesterday morning. city crews spent the morning taking cleaning up the mess. then pg&e took over. it was caused when a one-inch pipe in the homeowner's irrigation system broke. >> it's under pressure and it runs all night and people around aware of it, you have concentrated flow coming down the steep slope and it basically causes the soils to flow like a liquid. >> the soil engineer helped restabilize the hillside. the homeowner may have to pay for the clean up costs. pleasant hill, a car smashed into a candy store building yesterday afternoon. two cars collided, sending one crashing through the front door of a busy candy shop. about 20 people were everyone side at the time. both drivers and two other people suffered minor injuries. no word when repairs are completed so the store can reopen.

>> one of san francisco's newest millionaires is not the inventor of a clever knew start-up, he's a mechanic and he cashed in on the city's soaring real estate market. here's the details on his good fortune. >> jesse henry's dad was a mechanic so he followed in his footsteps when he opened this garage. he also followed his dad's advice. >> he always said if you get something, you have to buy it. every time he had a business he had to move his shop and move it here or there and it got to be a headache. >> he bought this building ten years ago. he just cashed in on the white hot real estate market. >> i it for almost $9 million. >> it's a building smack-dab in the district, in a neighborhood that has seen plenty of change in the last few years but the price of his property was considered the most valuable commercial real estate lot in the city. right here on third street and -- >> how much do you think it's selling for. >> the mcdonald's lot? >> yeah. >> let's say $2 million. >> higher.

>> $5 million. >> $17 million. >> smart investor. >> no official offer has been made for the lot just yet and mcdonald's still has a lease here until 2017. back in the mission, jesse henry understands that his sale means more change in this neighborhood. >> i bought this building and that's the big difference between me and the hundred other guys out there renting right now. >> in san francisco, abc7 news. santa cruz police are searching for a pair of teens who attacked and injured an 86-year-old woman while trying to steal her purse. surveillance video shows the two running away. the woman and husband were heading home from dinner on center street when one of the teens tried to grab her purse but it was strapped across her body. the woman fell to the ground and broke her hip, but she held on to the purse. the san francisco police are look for two men who tried to rob audiology owner and ended up stabbing his pit bull to death, instead. at 3:00 yesterday morning the owner was walking his male pit

bull. two men approached, one with a knife. they grabbed the dog but ran off without it after arena boxing with the owner. they said intact pit bulls are prized by some people. >> getting pups, purchasing whatever else it is. if they want to fire dogs or anything else, they are looking for dogs who have not been sterilized. this dog's owner, guardian, just lost his best friend. >> it turn out the robbers stabbed the dog. he did not survive. the owner was not injured. >> police are trying to track down those responsibility for a series of robberies in brentwood. five people were robbed at gunpoint between 8:15 and 9:30 thursday night. police say the robbers also used pepper spray in two of the incidents, but no one was seriously injured. >> new details concerning the bart train derailment in concord thursday night. a operator tried to move it on a sidetrack without a main track without approval. no passengers were on board at the time. it's the second time in two months a bart train has derailed in contra costa county. bart's new cars are causing

controversy, not over the cars -- or the style, but the color of the new seats on the new trains. they are the colors of the seattle seahawks. 49er fans are not pleased. one fan started a change.org petition asking bart to reconsider the colors of the new seats. this morning people in san francisco have been waiting in line overnight outside a store for some new shoes. it's outside the nike san francisco store in union square. nike air foam pocket pro easy. the shoes sell for $250. i find out this morning there's a great big underground love for these shoes and a lot of people are very interested. they buy two pairs, one goes on the internet to sell for hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars and the other one goes to the closet. >> very popular. >> pretty cool. they are enjoying i guess a mild morning out there, right? >> yeah. in san francisco 50 degrees, partly cloudy skies. the fog is moving around the bay. here's other look at the sutro

they say walked into a budding and thread end to start shooting. a woman called police saying a coworker was depressed and reportedly showed her a bag of bullets. they said the man is not a newspaper employee but works for a call center that rents office space in the budding. -- in the building. right now police are saying no weapons were recovered. officers did not have far to go to get to the seen. l.a.p.d. headquarters is right across from the times building. an emotional reunion for seven-year-old twins who fought off a carjacker with nothing but a toy snake. ron claiborne has their story. >> a mother in tears, but relieved. two of her children shaken but okay. a joyful end to a parents' worst nightmare. a man stole this couple's car with their three children inside. >> when i couldn't see the car anymore i said i don't want my kids -- he will do something to my kids. >> the drama in san antonio texas captured on the police dispatch audio tapes. >> look for a gold nissan. three kids got taken.

and a ford pickup and two other vehicles plowed into the store. the woman was pinned against the wall but her injuries are not serious. >> this morning a refly cargo carrier to the international space station, called the dragon, is in orbit. and liftoff of the falcon 9 rocket and dragon. space-x3 is underway. >> the mission is nearly five weeks away. it was plagued by contamination concerns. it is bringing new flies and space suit and lettuce growing experiment at the space station. it should dock tomorrow morning. it is also carrying a unique small satellite aimed at the aims research center in the silicon valley. it's a cube sat. it is loaded with tiny satellites the size of postage stamps called sprites. it will show how it will spin and launch the sprites into orbit. the model for the cube sat went

nations plaza. there be speakers, live music, special perform ans and demonstrations. today's earth day celebrations run from ten to six at the united nation's plaza. i know you can pick your weather for the day, but if they did, this is a pretty nice day for san francisco. >> yeah. pretty seasonal. you probably need a jacket. low 60s later on today with partly cloudy skies. things change for the holiday tomorrow and beyond that. so if we look at live doppler 7hd right now, this tells the story for much of the day. with the multi-layered clouds, mainly low clouds will be impacting the coast and the stronger sea breeze. but a few high clouds from time to time. very spring-like. a live look from mt. tam with the winds and higher elevations are picking up. you see the sun coming up in about ten minutes. we are looking at temperatures in the upper 40s for redwood city. mainly in the 50s from san francisco, oakland, also

down around gilroy and the coast five mile visibility. temperatures cooler in the north bay. here's a shot, though, way down south. santa cruz where it is cloudy and quiet right now. 46 in napa. petaluma 45. 50 concord. we are looking at temperatures here coming up another five to six degrees tomorrow for a better beach day. although today looking not bad. this is fogged in with a pretty shot from vollmer peak just a few seconds ago but the low clouds and fog on securing that view. cool to mild today. warming up for easter. just a one-day warmup. beyond that a couple areas of low pressure will be affecting us, allowing for a chance of showers late monday into tuesday with some breezy winds and then beyond that looks like we could still get some more rain. in fact more significant rain. here's a look at a weak system that's allowing for the on shore push to continue to give us the breezy winds, the cool temperatures at the coast. and that provides very little change today. tomorrow the sun coming up at

6:28. it should be clear. temperatures as high pressure builds in temporarily will be in the 60s at the coast. 80s in the afternoon. so we are looking at a high surf advisory tomorrow through monday morning. particularly around ocean beach, and all the way from sonoma down through monterey. right now five to six foot waves, but by tomorrow they are really lack to go crank up and the potential for sneaker waves. here's a look at the next couple of days. today is clear. tomorrow we are looking at another nice afternoon. but by monday look at all the cloud cover. we will see spotty showers by the afternoon. early evening hours here's some rain from the north bay to the east bay. overnight hours the cooler air pushes in and that will allow for more shower activity on tuesday. the week ahead, though, features temperate weather today and livermore tomorrow, the temperatures come up into the 80s. drop back down on monday and further tuesday and into the

51 degrees. we are looking at temperatures today 20 degrees warmer than where you are right now. so it should be a pleasant afternoon in the south bay. 45 petaluma, as well as santa rosa. pretty cool there. and throughout the day today the fog continues to clear. mainly in the morning hours. so by the early afternoon we are sunny and temperatures are mainly in the 70s. but look at the coast. the fog is banked up here along the san mateo coast with highs just in the 50s. but high pressure builds in for easter sunday, bringing big changes. we will talk about it in a few minutes. matt. >> thank you, lisa. today pope francis will take part in an easter vigil in saint peter's basilica. yesterday he presided over good friday's what at vatican. at the coliseum he led a torch lit procession marking the way of the cross. tens of thousands lined the streets holding prayer books and candles marking the bay jesus died on the cross. tomorrow there will be easter

march sot and 8.2 quake off chile april 2nd. and baja mexico and now a 7.2 near acapulco. what's going on here? ditched louie reports from the usgs headquarters in menlo park. >> the earthquake in acapulco caused a wall of a building to collapse in mexico city. it's the latest reminder this is the most seismically active region in the world. the ring of fire stretches from 25,000 miles from the south pacific, across japan, up north america and swinging past south america. it goes over densely populated coastal areas. but earthquake experts at usgs said the faults along the mexico coast have been building up stress, but the system polars have not been extraordinary. >> they haven't been very large earthquake. they have been a rank of sizes and the range of sizes and occurrences we are seeing is what we typically would see over

sort of a long -- this time of span, you know, with variations in activity that it's pretty common. >> however, the pattern of earthquakes can be disturbing. we've seen the destruction in japan in 2011. there have been two in chile. magnitude 8.2 and 6.7. and a 5.1 earthquake in orange county last month. the bay area sits on the ring of fire too. the 1989 moment we had a earthquake set fires, damaged the bay bridge and created deep cracks in roadways. >> where the faults have more movement, we expect more frequent, large effects on the fault. that's typically the plate boundaries such as the pacific ring of fire. >> technology is making strides in predicting earthquakes. >> including mexico city. >> an earthquake warning system activated during a news conference in pasadena. a similar system gave mexico residents time to take shelter. >> it gave the population of mexico city more than 70 seconds warning before the strong shaking arrived. and it gave acapulco about 27 seconds warning. had. >> in menlo park, david louie,
